Seeing WinXP reminds me of how Windows and even Office 2003-2010 used to have a friendly and welcoming aesthetic. Modern Windows looks very cold, serious, even soul-less. Hell, even the Windows logo no longer has multiple colors, just solid blue.

Great video. I built an xp computer recently for my kids to play a bunch of my games. I used a 3rd gen i5 and 730. The 3rd gen Intel was the newest processor still containing XP microcode and the NVIDIA 700-series cards were the newest card with XP drivers. My 6 year old LOVEs command and concquer generals. I used a version of XP (maybe the same as yours) with updated SATA, NIC and other drivers. I think a lot of games like these would be great ports onto something like a chrome book.
Make it a series because I have some DOS and Windows 3.1 games.

Actually the GTX 970 has a native XP driver, but not the 980 or higher. Strange, I know, but yeah. Technically you can patch the GTX 980 to work with the same driver that the 970 uses and it will work.

I set up something similar for my son the games are dead cheap and surprisingly the games seem better now then they was then . The way around the xp glitch generally is to create a boot supported hard drive on a xp machine the drivers can be a issue . But use a driver software to find them it can at least get you up and running .I have a switch on my pc running multiple drives windows xp and even android as we have a touchscreen . The retro stuff is brilliant 👍🏻 absolutely you have a new fan

The cost of parts for one of those older systems may vary. I just upgraded my Core2 Duo machine from an E4600 to an E8600 for roughly $50. This is a pretty big deal because the E8600 is faster (3.3 GHz vs. 2.4 GHz) has three times the L2 cache (6MB vs. 2MB) and supports a faster Front Side Bus (1333 MHz vs. 800 MHz).

Yes, I was about to say that XP had support on Intel CPUs up until 3rd gen. and regarding AMD, they supported XP up to the FX series CPUs. I have 2 PCs that triple boot, XP, win 7 and 10. and 2 that dual boot into XP, or 10. I call it the hardware sweet spot.

good to see slip stream driver install - run a virtual cd so you can just rip iso and mount them via extra meme that is ramdisk, also install old office and lastly think about imaging this and running on a vm in qemu? it may help performance a bit? xp and retro cliche in this video made for good content. pls think about doing content on a pkt cap /ids/ips box using malcolm/sec onion or selks - small biz need 24/7 pkt cap for audit trails even if they don't have enough money to run noc/soc, the other thing is maybe try using 2 dual port 40g cards (or 3) and do 80 bonded nic to your nas or 40g to dual nas - again this would be a thing that many many smb could and should use for mission critical data and just to save time...you have to change mtu and you will get full speed but you may have to look at different nvme to sustain big data transfers or goto raid arrays? get the 56g cards to do 40gbe may be only caveat - dual port 40g are like 40 bucks on ebay and transceivers are 30? you may just be able to use fiber or dac

Have you tried using Wine for playing those games on Linux? I believe it totally depends on vídeo card support. I found my old original starcraft brood War and decided to go this route, but my old i3 with Intel gfx is too slow, so I am researching for a better solution, could be using w98 vm only for this. Anyway, nice video as usual and do a series for this.

That's a very good question. I am not nearly good enough at tweaking WINE. I need to spend more time on it when I am not under a timeline. Unfortunately (my own fault) I only turn to WINE when everything else in my mental toolkit has failed and I am stressed. I need to spend a weekend just srewing around with nothing to do. Yeah, that'll happen soon! HAHAHA
