    In an interview with John Petrucci (guitar), he and John Myung (bass) have been buddies since they were kids. They had a pact with each other that they'd practice 6 hours per day, and they trusted each other so much in this that if they saw each other at a party or something, there was a moment where they knew, "yeah, you've earned this party, you've practiced 6 hours today!"

    Great introduction to DT for you. They are from New York. The bassist , guitarist and original drummer met at the Berklee Conservatory of Music in Boston. The current keyboard player also from New York was trained at Juilliard. All of them are at the top of their field. They do have a vocalist although his voice is kind of shot now for live performances. Had some type of vocal chord injury. Keep exploring their catalogue. The cut you played was from their seminal album Metropolis Part 2- Scenes From A Memory. Play the album from start to finish and you will be hooked for life.

    You have already had many recomendations for getting into this band. Just two more myself: Octavarium, and Metropolis Pt. 2. This last one is the album from which this "little" bit was taken off: The Dance of Eternity is just a part of a larger suite. The whole work is around 72 minutes long, but if you have the time to give it a chance, believe me, you won't be disappointed.

    Druumer, good luck figuring it out. There are over 108 time signature changes in this song.
    That old time saloon part is Rag Time invented by Scott Joplin as a new type of Classical music, bur ended up being popular in "cat houses " and bordellos, and became the precursor to jazz, and is in 2/4, time which gives it a weird syncopated march sound.
    The Bassist is playing a five string and the guitarists playing a seven string so they get an additional low B string, gor that heavier low chords and arpeggios.

    Welllll.....they are not quite from Scandinavia. Dream Theater originally were from the east coast. Boston if I remember correctly 😁😁😁 Yup, they have been right in your backyard for many years. My BF and I saw them at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby Pa back in I think it was 2002 and they were absolutely incredible. In the 90's, I heard "Pull Me Under" on the radio but couldn't figure out who it was (no google back then) I bought many cassettes trying to find that one song. Once I figured out it was Dream Theater I bought every album they put out and love them all!!!

  • @scottrobinson4611
    @scottrobinson4611 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Of all the Dream Theater songs to listen to first, you picked the most "prog for the sake of prog" song.
    It's like they wrote this song with the explicit intention of changing the time signature as frequently as possible.
    While they do have moments like this throughout their discography, they turn it up to 100 for this song in particular.
    What's weirder is that this song comes right in the middle of their magnum opus - a concept album called Metropolis Part II.
    This song just sort of pops up between songs that really contribute to the story.
    It's a good song, but it's definitely for prog fans more than anyone else.
    Check out their song 'The Count of Tuscany'. James Labrie (the guy from the ayreon song) sings on it - he tells a dramatised version of a personal story from a trip to Italy. It's a long song, but it's an epic, and their best individual song imo.

    LOL, your the second reactor to DT I saw this week that came for the vocals and picked an instrumental to react to. I find that funny because they have a ton of songs and only a handful of instrumentals and both the reactors picked one of them. Dream Theater is based and started on Long Island NY. At least three of them still live here on the island. The original drummer, Mike Portnoy, not the guy in this vid, is from Long Beach Long Island. He is the one the named the band. This guy is a better drummer but I liked the songs better with Portnoy because he was much more involved in writing them than the new drummer is. He left a few years ago because I guess basically he wanted to do something different with another group who's drummer was out sick or something. Then when the drummer came back they said sorry we don't need you anymore. So he tried to come back to DT but they had already hired this new drummer. So he was shit out of luck. The guitarists and the bassists are from Kings Park Long Island and are the only two original members of the band left. The three of them went to Berkley school of music. The drummer first met the other two there. They formed a group, Majesty, and dropped out of Berkley. Then they changed the name to Dream Theater in 1988 I believe. This is the third and by far the best keyboardist they have had but he has been with them for well over 20 years so he might as well be an original. And this is the second singer but he has been with them around 30 years so. They average a new cd every 2-3 years since 1988 with a new one due in the fall so the have quite a few albums. And they have a ton(7or 8?) double and triple dvd's all on youtube so there is no shortage of material for you to sample. As long as you stay away from "The Astonishing" cd you really can't go wrong with a DT song.

      @@HistoryBuff Forgot the reactors name but is she a vocal coach? Just looked it up. Julia Nilon? I especially love reactions when the reactor is a musician as well. Like her and yourself. Oh and just my opinion, with Zeppelin and Dream Theater you should always do them live. Why wouldn't you want to watch them play? Dream Theater is so precise the live version often sounds just like the studio version anyway. I particularly like the live version of "Home," because they added a killer guitar solo thats not on the studio version and you get to see the original drummer. Also, Dream Theater's lyrics are often thought provoking. They don't sing about the usual stuff. One song is about secret societies and another bunch of songs is strung across many albums is sort of about the original drummers alcohol problems. Another whole album is about a fictional? murder on Long island in the early 1900's. Still another is about the guitarist waking up after a bad car crash. And sadly, "The Astonishing" is a space rock opera that reminds me of Styx Mr. Roboto. Thats not a good thing. Thats what happens when you let the keyboard player have too much control. LOL.

    Don’t be afraid to explore them, this is like their « pure flex » song. They have a signer (not the guitarist).

    Do you americans even know Pink Floyd btw. ? After all its a eurpean band, so meanwhile i better ask even since i always though the whole world should know them. But i saw also already reactors here that never heared anything from Phil Collins 🙄
    But Dream Theater did even a complete Dark Side of the moon concert :
    Dream Theater - Full Concert (Dark Side of The Moon) 2005 Pink Floyd HD
    th-cam.com/video/cDcfdNxmVPQ/w-d-xo.html&
    and also i always though their album "Scenes From A Memory" sounds a lot like Pink Floyd when i heard it the first time.

    • @beldin2987
      @beldin2987 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, i also recently saw an interview with Ritchie Blackmore where he said he was surprised that some Queen songs were actually popular in the US because the americans normally only listen to 3 chord songs (good ols blues formula), and Bohemian Rhapsody is like 32 different chords. And the same may then also be true for stuff like Nightwish and all those symphonic rock or metal bands.
      Maybe thats also the reason why you call even your pop these days RnB, while i understand actually "real" blues under that. But i have no clue i your modern pop is also based on 3 chords really.

      @@HistoryBuff They also played some Yes covers, who was one of my absolute favorites bands back in the 70s-80s.
      Btw. talkin bout Yes, you should watch this :
      "Awaken" - Jon Anderson & Todmobile 2013
      th-cam.com/video/d_Va3e_52TE/w-d-xo.html
      Jon Anderson was born 1944 so he was already 69 there, still performing great as ever 😲And even if its not played with Yes, the band and orchestra together makes it maybe one of the best performances ever of this song, which also is one of the greates songs from Yes. But thts hard to say since they have so much masterpieces 🤘🏼
