The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)

Like Rubinstein before him, Smyslov saw himself primarily as an artist of the
chessboard. Smyslov didn't just aim for victory in chess, but also for an ideal that
he called "truth". He sometimes referred to this truth as "the triumph of logic".
However vaguely, he insisted that truth must exist in chess, and must be just as
attainable as in all the other arts.
Smyslov always made it clear that to him chess was an art. He also maintained
that his chess ideal derived from his wider artistic tastes, particularly in music. A
man of broad culture, he was a gifted musician, whose rich baritone voice, often
in demand at off-the-board moments in international chess events, once earned
him an audition at the Bolshoi Opera.
Smyslov once wrote that he most admired a musical ideal that reflected "strict
beauty and harmony, spontaneity and elegance, the faultless intuition of the art-
ist, the absolute mastery of technique and therefore complete independence from
it." To Smyslov, such notions applied not just to music, but also to chess.

It’s amazing how agadmator reveals all the different lines that would end the game on the spot basically from move 6 and nearly ever move onwards, because by demonstrating the threats that the GMs end up averting by the narrowest of margins he really shows how these games are sculptures created from the same marble as all of our own games but we don’t always see the depth cause most lower level players probably would’ve fallen for the last 20 continuations and traps that DIDN’T happen in the game analyzed because they were spotted and defended. The eventual final masterpiece of pieces on the board is a sculpture we simply don’t have the vision to see yet but it’s clear that they are simply chiseling away getting neater and neater, perfecting the edges and curves until the both sides have made sculpture so damn perfect it usually gets draws or magic. The moral of the story is agadmator’s analysis showcases not only why the games immortal but how they evolve from such natural and seemingly mundane openings that every player tends to encounter

If white used the bishop to attack the rook by f7 blacks other rook could pin the white bishop against the white queen. If the bishop went to e4 ...that would cause trouble...I am not sure what would be best for black then...I am sure you Agad can tell me why I am wrong...right???

Every time I look at a piece hanging, and I wonder well he will be capturing that, and then right the next second our dude here says, "obviously he can't capture that piece"😂😂😂😂😂😂I am always baffled at how beyond the calculations must go to actually see if it's the right move or not😂

but at 15:00 - surely after white plays Rf7, the game continues? As in, it isn't lost for white by any means, it seems. Black has to give up the queen i think - then it looks rather messy, but white's attack is still going, it seems, though i can't find a breakthrough.

Mr. Antonio, I recently won a game of 25 moves (opponent resigned) where I did not lose a single pawn. I'm not highly ranked, so I was wondering, do you know of a historical game from high ranked chess players where the winner kept all of his pawns?

So when he offered to find the move, I was just like, bet it's queen to d7, dunno why, I'm shit at chess, but I bet it's d7.
Agadmators: if you found this move, you can defend against Tal, it's Qd7
me: hold my beer, I'm going to dig Tal up and challenge him to play chess

The photo that you show could be never of this game, as you suggest. The position board on the photo shows a black pawn on c6, but Smyslov's first move is c5 ...

Thanks Antonio, bu I think you miscalculated something in your analysis. Why wouldn't black capture the bishop on d7 instead of playing bishop to d3 as you suggested at 12.35? Because after capturing d7, black also wins a rook as there is no way to defend both of the rooks. Ok, then white can capture black's bishop and black now has a bishop and an extra pawn against white's rook and it looks kind of equal I think. Am I wrong?

    • @astroNexx
      @astroNexx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ceyhun çüner if bishop takes on D7 then rxH7+, KxH7, RF7+ and take the bishop back, white has a rook vs blacks bishop and pawns are equal

around 15 mins in, after QF8, RG8, wouldn't the Tal move instead be QE7 ( which also seems pretty good for white ) ?

Antonio. FYI Something in the way you produce your videos is incompatible with Smart TV TH-cam apps. I haven't researched it significantly, but it can be observed in 2016-2018 Samsung 6200/6300 series TV's. If needed, I can film the symptoms for you.

What about Qb6 in the critical position not allowing the rook to move from the 1st rank as Qb1 will be checkmate....doesn't that stop Tal's idea as well?

What if you do QB6 or QB8? If white plays the same, after BxG8 black can checkmate by QB1
Genuinely curious on what white would do in that situation.... seems it would be just fine as well

At 11:18 , if 39.... Be5:d6 , I found (by pausing the video and calculating on the board of the video) 40.Rh6:d6 Rd8:d6 41.Rf1-f8+ Rg7-g8 42.Rf8:g8# (due to Bd5 the g8 is controlled by white)
