    The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)
    The players would meet each other four times, twice in Bled and once in both Zagreb and Belgrade. In Bled, the players stayed at the Grand Hotel Toplice, the site of Alexander Alekhine's historic triumph in Bled (1931). 4 Mikhail Tal had just had his appendix removed less than two weeks earlier, but FIDE insisted he make it in time for the tournament. According to Tal, "I was not much troubled by the effects of the operation, apart from in a purely mechanical sense; during a game I did not feel inclined to stroll about ..."5 This information may have come as a surprise to Harry Golombek, who commented after Round 5 that "it is an impressive sight to see him (Tal) get up after he has made what he obviously thinks is a winning move and pace around the table like a man-eating tiger."6 It may also have surprised Bobby Fischer, who complained after his first game with Tal that whenever he "rose from the board ... he'd begin talking to the other Soviet players, and they enjoyed whispering about their or others' positions."7 Pal Benko later revealed that due to his "demanding" job in a US brokerage firm, he "didn't prepare at all" for the event, although he reckoned "I did reasonably well."8 He didn't. After the first cycle Tal, Paul Keres and Tigran Petrosian shared the lead.

    i remember this game. an old school german GM Helmut Pfleger analysed it as a bonus in a chess software. he said Smyslov defended flawlessly until the Nf6 move. cant recall the exact words of Pfleger but it was smth like: even a rock solid player like Smyslov fell for Tals black magic. it was the first tal game i saw so i got pretty excited when i read Smyslov + Tal in the title.

    3:46 - I was curious about why going back with the bishop was the "best move" since it looks like Bc5 wins a piece after white moves its queen out of danger, and this possibility wasn't analyzed in the video. It leads to a sharp tactical line that is winning for white, but it's so amazing that I wish it had been covered in the video.
    Here's one potential line I came up with in analyzing this position:
    13... Bc5
    14. Qh4 bxc4
    15. Qg3 Nh5 (covering g7 and threatening the queen)
    16. Qg5 g6
    17. g4 f6 (saying "If you take my knight, I take your queen")
    18. Nh6+ Kh8
    19. Bc3 (pinning the f-pawn) Ng7 (getting the knight out of danger and unpinning)
    20 Rxd7! (a tactical pin: if fxg5??, then Bxg7#) Bxd7
    21. Qxc5 Qxa2
    22. g5!! (saccing the remaining rook for activity) Qa1+
    23. Kd2 Qxh1
    24. gxf6 Rxf6 (the pawn can't not be captured because if you play, say, Ne6 trying to threaten the queen then f7+ just reels the knight back to g7 and Qd4 (or Qe5) creates an unstoppable threat of checkmate. You can't move the rook to g8 to defend because both the knight on h6 and the f-pawn control it. If you do play Rg8, then fxg8Q+ (or fxg8R+) Rxg8 Nf7# with a smothered mate)
    25. Bxf6 Qxf3
    26. Qd4 (renewing the checkmate threat of Bxg7# and the rook still can't cover g8 because of the Nf7# smothered mate, so black now has to part with its queen) Qxf6
    27. Qxf6
    If you want, you can double white's pawns by playing 26... c3+ 27. bxc3 Qxf6, but still white has a winning advantage with a queen and knight against two minor pieces and a rook with four pawns each. But what a wild attacking line it would have been to get there. Just the sort of thing to play to Tal's style.

    Great video of Tal's amazing play..Thanks Agadmator and keep up your good work. Indeed on 10:28 in the video you say that Tal resigned the game but I think it was Smyslov who had enough of it :D Just a question; why did Smyslov played bishop to D8 on 03:54 in the video and not bishop to C5? Then Smyslov would have had a double attack. Attack Tal's bishop with the pawn and the Queen with the dark coloured bishop. Maybe if Smyslov played this move instead of bishop D8, Tal would play Queen to H4 anyway i think?

    Hi there! If white plays rook to d8 first with check, bishop takes d8, then white bishop takes pawn on e5 with check, queen has to take e5 because g7 checkmate, then f8 is checkmate too.. It doesnt matter if rook or bishop to play for white.. Both ways are possible: Rd8 Bxd8, Bxe5+ Qxe5, Qf8++ If I miss something please tell me:) Rd8 Bf8 also is checkmate in 2.. Anyway thank you for posting!

    In the 1959 candidates I believe Fischer vs Petrosian played an interesting game where Petrosians king is able to march behind his two pawns all the way up the side of the board even though both sides have a Q,R and minor piece! Have you covered that one? Thanks!

    Also, just to clarify one point arising from the position at 8:05, you don't actually _have_ to first decoy the queen by playing Bxe5+. Rd8+ is also winning. After Bxd8, you can then play Bxe5+ and if the queen takes now, then it's still successfully decoyed, and if Kg8 then Qg7#. The reason it's not as fast isn't because of the queen's control of f8 but because the bishop can be interposed after Bxe5+, making the entire line Rd8+ Bxd8, Bxe5+ Bf6, Bxf6 Kg8, Qg7#.

    (at 7:48 in the puzzle)
    *Can't 1. Rd8+ first, also deliver checkmate?*
    Followed by *...Bxd8*
    2. *Bxe5+ Qxe5*
    lastly 3. *Qf8++*

      now it would be a mate in 4 instead of 3 since bishop could block the check afterwards

    • @IPichu777
      @IPichu777 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gabrielmariflores3542 Correct! After 1. Rd8+ Bxd8 2. Bxe5+ Bf6 Bxf6+ Kg8 Qg7#

    At 8.00 also Rd8+ works, followed by Bxd8, Bxd5+, Qxd5/Bf6, Qf8X/Bxf6 and Kg8 Qg7X

    Wow! I got the position, but transposed the rook check with the bishop check. I don't see an escape either way.

    @ 3:52 There's probably a refutation for 13. … Bc5 14. Qh4 bc 15. Qg5 Ne8 16, Bc3 f6 … (etc.)?
    But considering what transpired in the game this line might've been worth a shot. ;)

    @6:30 Black would be ok by playing Be7 protecting the rook & pawn & if rook capture the knight bishop captures back and connected the rook but even then Black gotta connect the rooks or at least try it's best to do so.
