Tal vs Botvinnik 1960
Moscow
No sooner did Mikhail Botvinnik regain his title, the chess world became entranced by charismatic young Latvian named Mikhail Tal. Tal won the 1958 interzonal tournament at Portoroz, then helped the Soviet Union to retain the Chess Olympiad; before going on to win the 1959 Candidates Tournament with 20 out of 28 points--a point and a half ahead of second place Paul Keres.
Tal often sacrificed material in search for the initiative in chess. With such intuitive sacrifices, he created vast complications, and many masters found it impossible to solve all the problems he created over the board, though deeper post-game analysis found flaws in some of his conceptions. Although this playing style was scorned by ex-World Champion Vasily Smyslov as nothing more than "tricks", Tal convincingly beat every notable grandmaster with his trademark aggression.

At the first sight im in love with chess,i already knew when i choose tal as my fav GM (coz the mezmerizing attacking skill) later in this (Tal-Botvinik episode) i realized Tal also the gentleman who love challenge and the man with the principe "i must different from another people" (well the last one just my opinion) ah.... if Mikhail Tal keep alive till at age 76 (like hawking) maybe i can shake his hand and admire him as my role models life,Love u Tal from Indonesia😙😙
And love u too Antonio 😙
I see that Detective Conan reference.
Unfortunately The Magician of Riga didn't take very good care of himself, and we lost him in 1992. A real shame, and a great lose to the game.
sparkplug1018 yea.... i know,i was shock when im read his autobioghrapy when it shows he died at age 55😢
Micky Mantle said "If id known id live this long, id have taken better care of myself" I think Tal probably had similar thoughts.
But The Magician from Riga left us many wonderful games to learn from, his style wasn't always precise, and was often complicated, but he attacked like no other. And much like Fischer must have been an incredible opponent to face over the board.
Personally one of my favorite Tal games is the Drowning Hippo, should check it out if you haven't seen it already.
Screw the candidates, we want more Tal games
Me: That move looks good.
Agadmator: And obviously you can’t play that move because it allows mate on 57 moves.
Me: Yeah... bad move.
Haha totally!!
😆
:D
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can relate🤣🤣🤣💔.
What a great series. I love the Capablanca series but there is something brave and fearless how Tal consistently forces more and more complications and consistently comes out ahead. That rook e5 was a brilliant barricade, it made the Queen into a lost puppy dog and stifled any momentum Botvinnik had. Another masterpiece.
Tal uses his rooks like knights
But he uses his Knights like LC0 uses her pawns D:
I know right
Not uses,should be used 🤘
@@stoicmode-classified He lives on in our hearts
I feel the same while watching this game
Watched too many of talsl's games, I tried to analyze his moves, but came up with nothing, unpredictable and fearless... Even if you think tal made a mistake, later on, it becomes an opening to a greater attack...
Amazingly beautiful games by Tal, I learned a lot from this genius 👍👍
I know I will miserably lose too many games against Tal, but still, playing against him would have made me a better player...
Thank you bro for the videos, they are not only entertaining, but also educational
I's a weird move , not because it's a weird move , but .... Are you sure ? ha ha ha ha
Bro 190 likes n no comments
"There is an interesting line and I will show it because it is an interesting line"
Great vid tho
*and this is a weird move. not because its a weird move*
The funny thing is that was probably the clearest way to express his meaning.
13:24
😁😁😁
He's Great!
Botvinnik is a very unpleasant opponent
amro ezzeldien This is a great compliment to any competitive player.
Exactly my thoughts when facing a good player
@Donald Trump Wrong
@Donald Trump why?
@@brodigy254 not why, how?
No matter where i am, whenever i see notification from agad i open my laptop, sit and start watching the video!!!
Me too man.
Me2 we are like addicted stadium 4 😂😂😂😂😂
+Gunjan Shellar
No dude what if you are in a time restricted game against Tal. Cannot stop to watch agad.
Gunjan is a name of girl I think so 🤔 y he is calling no man then?
@@VestigialHead I can't get notification while playing 😂😂
@ 21:30 "But, Here Tal played Queen to e5. It's a weird move, but Tal really has ideas here. So what do you play here as black ?" Agadmator.
Me : Resign ?🙄🤦
"First of all, you have to make a move" Ha ha that's so agadmator
“Botvinnik has to make rook”. It’s embarrassing when that happens in the middle of a game, but when u gotta go you gotta go.
Cold moderation. No word to few, no word to much! PERFECT!
Today is my birthday and I get a Tal game! Best birthday present ever!!!
F
There was probably a lot of Respect between these two Players Botonivik played a Great Game Tal simply Awesome 1960 the year I was born another reason I like Tal so much Thanks Agadmator Game Enjoyed
This game isn't in the playlist for the for tal vs Botvinnik, almost missed it
I watched agadmator for the chess analysis but subscribed for the drink analysis
Very instructive game, these games from Tal has been helping me get back into playing chess from a long absence due to work and school.
What a match. The young challenger rises, but the formidable and stubborn champion stands his ground!
This is amazing!!! and its is even more amazing to those who have read "Tal-Botvinnik, 1960 by Mikhail Tal" you do capture the essence.
so reti opening counters caro kann players xD
It is impossible to just move the pieces on the boards and analyze everything. Thanks to you now I can really enjoy legendary games.
Tal and Ivanchuk have the most interesting games
It's a shame they never olayed eachother in their primes
I like ivanchuk's play
He was truly a magician over the board..
who ever describes chess better than you.you are the best chess commentator in the world. opponent like botvinik was very hard to bit chess player, even for alekhine chess genious in 1920,1930,and 1940th.
15:15 Rook captures Queen captures Queen captures Rook captures Rook captures Bishop captures.... with CHECK. Then Knight captures Rook captures and in the end you have a drawn end game. Lmao 😂 made my night
Wonderful game. Botvinnik finds an engine move towards the end. The knight manoeuvre idea for the defence is amazing
#suggestion
You may like to add the engine evaluation bar thing (the vertical bar with black and white colors signifying which side is better and by how much )
This is useful for viewers to identify small mistakes easily
ageed
But its like learning to ride a four wheeled bicycle, it doesn't teach you much.
never clicked a notification so fast
Very rarely would a GM play into a lost position to only 1 move away from mate. I think botvinic did it on purpose to spite tal
Not really lol he can still check Tal's king into oblivion and force him to hide between the kingside pawns, but it's a lost endgame anyway and Botvinnik knows that Tal will convert it.
Pure magic from the magician! Thanks to agad for uploading this game!
When you are watching Tal vs. Botvinnik and Agad spoils you the end of the Capablanca saga. #2019
6:39,at Nc7 doesnt white win immediately with c5?
@Goat_Te a you are not forced to trade queens after c6.. blacks queen can just back down on the A file
@Zany_ i think winning a piece and a pawn for no compensation counts as an instant win in world class games
Thanks! Question: when was Botvinnik *_not_* in severe time trouble? This seems to me to be a main theme in this match. Although Botvinnik was considered the better preparer, Tal clearly did his homework. And although Botvinnik was considered the better endgame player, Tal was no slouch here either. Tal was able to play both quickly enough and precisely enough that Botvinnik seems to have been in time trouble in most of these games at the 40 move mark. In the end, it seems this was a match where a younger player with slightly newer, better, more flexible ideas beat an older champion just past his prime, who had one too many idiosyncrasies. Thanks again. Rikki Tikki.
Thanks agadmator for
going back to Tal vs Bottvinik series.
Very nicely explained.
I will save this video for dinner 😂
“First of all you do have to make a move.”
Classic game by the master. Its weird to see Tal not play e4, and Botvinnik in the King's Indian. But I guess Tal was better out of his comfort zone than Botvinnik was- the most versatile player won
After the hypothetic 14. ... Nc7 you give the "interesting line" starting with 15. Q:a7 but 15. c5 would end the game immediately.
I think theres plenty of options for counter play that threatens whites queen that it's not really a major concern
Great games between Botwinnik and Tal :) Greetings from Poland !
This video is not placed in the playlist; it skips from game 10 to game 12
this might be the longest analyzing video uploaded by u. i am always enjoying ur chess analysis. thank you agadmator :)
13:10 couldn't Tal have moved Re7 to get the pawn and if Botvinnik had protected it then he could capture rook on f2?
After Re7 you get Rxa2, and now the pawns will be traded
when you are reading the contributors its as if they are sorted by their nationality in your list
Hello everyone!!! So enjoyable ride this was ...thank so much my friend and all chess community.peace out
#suggestion-The Peruvian Immortal(Estebaan Canal vs. NN)
Do you think for some of the more recent games you will be able to implement the clock times?
Agreed, that's a great idea, but it would be hard to get such data.
One of the main reasons I love watching Tal's games is because he plays just like the way I play. Creating complications and trying to come on top.
Granted I rarly do come on top, I still enjoy that 1 minute (on 5m blitz games) my opponent spends to find what his next move will be after I do something Tal like.
Although I lack the intellect, the skills and the knowledge to even compare with Tal, seeing him play this moves just makes something in me go 'WOW'.
This is the best and perfect example of his quote "You must take your opponent into a deep dark forest where 2+2=5 and the path leading out is only wide enough for one.
Tal doesn’t want to exchange queen - tal loves giving them away
Been watching your videos for a long time now my friend.. thank u for covering these games..
after Qa5 by white, Rc7 is no option cause of c5 (min 6:44) ... nevertheless, i love your channel :)
21:52 i thought immediately of making that move
Tal seem to dominate this game. Great plays right from the beginning development.
This game is similar to the last one of Karpov - Kasparov in Sevilla Match. The tactical player that changes the match strategy against the solid positonal player, playing a positonal opening with a slow pieces development. And striking the board with the tactical struck in the precise moment.
"This is a wierd move.. Not because it's a wierd move, but because it doesn't really matter"
- Agadmator 2018
perhaps my favorite game and analysis of yours so far, very excellent sir
There is nothing better than watching Tal games then playing against the computer and sacrificing pieces like a mad .man and seeing the outcome,,,😂😂😂
"You play to win the game! Hello! You play to win the game..."
You put the game 11 after game 20 in your playlist☺
Felt like I was losing my mind until I looked at the playlist
Wow. I don't know if the games are themselves amazing or the analysis is extra good here or both but this series is a class apart from your normal videos...
Really nice video. followed all the matches. Thanks for this Agadmator. You are the best! Keep them comming
This game is not in the playlist @agadmator
considering that botvinik was also the greatest player of the time I wish this time tal will reborn with no weakness
Mother of God... 26min! Thx again, another nice video!
That e6 pawn is feeling like a king as a queen, 2 rooks & a knight guarding him while the king is simply watching this drama from the corner surrounded by gate-keepers!!
In P. H. Clarke's, "Mikhal Tal's Best Games of Chess" (1961) - my second chess book ever - move 27 of Game 11 is listed as R-G7.
14:36
“Rook 5 to e4”

I want to play against you agadmator :)
RIP
Get past 2000 ELO and maybe worth it then
very nice game. thanks @agadmator
i wanna ask a question. how many variations should one claculate and to what level in a blitz game say 5 or 3 mins?
thanks.
Your accent has improved immensely!
Thanks!
Mikhail Tal is my favorite chess player. His style of play🔥🔥 new to the channel
This video is missing from your Playlist Tal vs Botvinnik 1960
Where is ur unboxing silver play button video
I didn't get it. I asked TH-cam support, but they're ignoring me :)
agadmator's Chess Channel damn how dare they ? I will take care of it . Give me like 2 weeks and they will respond .
I wonder if any chess engine would actually consider any of Tal's sacrifices. It's just maddening & exasperating.
Wow no dislikes. Great job adagmator.
Why do I like Tal so much
Man, best videos around!! But don't spoil the ending of the match at the beginning of the video please :)
most awaited video..
right?
Just beautiful
This video is out of order on the playlist. It is game 11 but it comes after game 19 in the list
Man, I love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Maybe Botvinik in the middle game didn't wanna go for a draw coz he sensed sooner or later tal will sacrifice his bishop in a position that he could hold... He calculated half of that right.
i
It's game 11, but it's the #20 in the tal vs botvinnik list - you need to reorder it
At 6:40. The best move for white would be c6. Winning blacks queen.
QUESTION - at 18:58, why can't the checkmate threat from white Qg8 be defended by black Qe8/Qf8? Why Nf6 is the only defense?
Idk i think he just miscalculated it, i was thinking that too, or maybe he want to say "totally eliminate checkmate possibility", cuz who know tal have unexpected prepared move but yeah theoritically he miscalculated it
You were mistaken in 7:39 black will not play qb4 exchanging queens if bxc4 he will play bxe5 and if white takes queen x d1 twice and bh3
Great video! Quick question: Where are you from???
Hi @agadmator, the order seems to be wrong as game 11 didn't show up after game 10, but after game 19 for me.
Might be my TV but probably not.
I think you miss something on the time 6.45 if night back to c7 then tal would push pawn to c5 then the black queen no where to go.
At 6:39 you raise the inquiry of NC7. You missed the immediate snap-push of c5!
If iam botvinnik I will continue the match without resigning and play Qb2+and capture a pawn and find a draw till last with plenty of ideas
Kg6, if you take the f pawn Qf5+ and you are done, you must exchange queen, and you'll never stop the g pawn.
So much learning opportunity
such a long video but it was worth it .
Such brilliance
#suggestion Yug-ch 1965, Rajko Bogdanovic & Albin Planinc, French defence.
Finally..thanks man
Great analysis.
