Easy, stop with the world ending threats and make the World of Warcraft a fully realized setting, not an overarching story, but a world of possibilities and interesting dynamics. (with yes a sense of history but also new history to be made)
No seriously, having everyone and everything hogtied to a bigger narrative only serves to make the setting less interesting and in turn ruins the gaming experience.

Thing is, the storytelling has never been amazing, I don't want to speak for everyone, but I don't love the stories because they're thought provoking, genius and incredible, contrarily I like them because they're simple fun. Arthas and Garrosh are arguably the two best written characters in universe, and I like them because they're fun, I wouldn't say they're amazingly deep at all. I want to go on a quest to kill some troggs, I want to do a dungeon to take out some pirates, without the overarching feeling I'm wasting time waiting for an old god to show up. When leveling and playing classic, those huge threats are looming, but they're barely on your mind, they're an inevitability but everything between the murlocs and demon jesus don't feel like time wasters, because they aren't.

I was blown away by the sections in Chronicle that detail the Trogg Invasion/ Thermaplugg Betrayal. I had the same reaction as you upon finding out that 80% of Gnomanity was wiped out.
Another interesting part for me was how Mekkatorque refused to ask Stormwind/Ironforge for help, or even tell them about the trogg problem. He recognized that humans/dwarves were also in a pretty desperate position fighting the Horde in the Second War.
With this act, Mekkatorque puts the honor, humility, pride and arrogance of Gnomanity on full display. His outright refusal to be perceived as a burden to the newly formed Alliance causes a previously obscured duality in his character to emerge.
On one hand, this strong sense of conviction results in tragedy. When faced with several options, Mekkatorque’s dogmatic adherence to his principles leads to a decision wherein he chooses his own personal values, goals and vision over gnomish lives. Who knows … maybe the Alliance could have made a real difference - or perhaps, already stretched too thin by the war with the Horde, and more still, distracted by new whispers of a mysterious plague of undeath, the Alliance would have proved incapable of turning the tide in favor of the gnomes.
We typically observe the use of similar kinds of thought experiments, or "what if …" discussions, in educational contexts. For example, let's say a history teacher assigns a persuasive essay assignment. In order to receive a high grade, students are tasked with applying their existing content knowledge to an entirely new hypothetical scenario. The prompt is deliberately designed to reinforce students' understanding of the actual history itself, but in addition, give them an opportunity to engage with history in a creative and meaningful way. This form of assessment is a compelling alternative to the traditional approach. In that model, there usually is a heavy emphasis on the memorization and regurgitation - not the application - of information. But I digress, as many WoW adversaries would say when they get to 10% HP … "ENOUGH!"
I simply bring this up with the pure intention of showing how insightful or resourceful these sorts of mental exercises can be. However, in this particular instance, they're completely worthless and your prediction of how the Invasion of Gnomergan would have played out is entirely irrelevant! The crossroads of destiny were thrust upon Mekkatorque, and without the option to quick-save or go to Thottbot, he didn't have the luxury of knowing how both scenarios would end. Ultimately, he chose to forgo the exercise entirely - not only just refusing to ask the Alliance for reinforcements, food, medical supplies or anything else that could have saved gnomish lives - Mekkatorque doesn't even notify them of what is happening. Other Alliance leaders don't truly know the full extent of the Trogg Invasion/Thermaplugg Betrayal (Platinum is absolutely right - can it still even be considered a betrayal coming from a guy named Sicco?) till many years later. Highlighting the fruitlessness of applying this specific hypothetical experiment during this time/place in the High Tinkerer's life can be useful when attempting to defend his actions, as most would assume that a leader such as Gelbin shouldn't act in service of interests that lead to more civilian lives lost.
Alas, the first side of Mekkatorque's duality is thus revealed. In a manner eerily reminiscent of a certain young Prince of Lordaeron, Mekkatorque places the survival of Gnomanity square on his shoulders. The weight of the dead - heavy, unmoving and cannibalizing - feast off his own troubled conscious and prey upon his doubts, fears, guilts and insecurities. Pride and arrogance, in combination with an unbreakable sense of purpose and responsibility to save his people, inevitably lead Mekkatorque to brazenly and deliberately ignore a potential solution to the crisis and further increase the chances that the gnomes become just another statistic. The latest culture to fall victim to the Azerothian Common Cold - also known as genocide. To learn more about this growing epidemic, please see night elves, blood elves, draenei, etc. for more information.
Yet, in spite of the above analysis, when you look at Mekkatorque’s behavior through the lens of his motivations and intent, rather than through the consequences of his actions, the story suddenly becomes less about a callous leader, and more about an inspiring one.
Mekkatorque offers a vision - a sense of direction and hope - that restores a semblance of confidence and optimism to his people. While gnomes are naturally blessed with a preponderance of jovial tendencies, Mekkatorque’s ability to inspire and lead are still pretty impressive here. Considering the onslaught of violence, death and betrayal the gnomes had just recently suffered, this turn back towards their trademark enthusiasm and positivity lends credence to Mekkatorque’s competencies as High Tinkerer.
In addition, Mekkatorque’s stalwart rejection of pervasive stereotypes - namely the assumptions that gnomes are weak, cowardly or just simply too ridiculous to be taken seriously - highlights his desire to secure the future well-being, reputation, power and position of gnomish society in a world soon to be dominated by the necessity of having strong allies in the face of rampant factionalism and of course … Warcraft.
Like Frodo, Mekkatorque makes us believe that anyone is capable of heroism. His unrivaled genius, creativity and determination make his lack of physical strength, as well as the glaringly obvious vertical limitations, complete non-factors. You might think twice about messing with a gnome if you witnessed Mekkatorque and his famous mech-suit on the battlefield!
Gelbin’s inventions were so far beyond what any contemporary was doing at the time that many mistook his science for magic. Through tinkering, Mekkatorque challenged the very nature of reality itself and forced people to expand their previous conceptions of what science and technology were capable of.
Lastly, I would be remiss to not mention the context underlying the construction of the Deeprun Tram. Mekkatorque somehow manages to build and complete this thing at the same time Gnomergan is being overrun by irradiated troggs and a genocidal maniac. So, Mekkatorque and the gnomes gift dwarves/humans an incredibly advanced public/military transportation system that becomes a vital component of the Alliance war effort in the Second War. Further, we all know how to enjoy the benefits of the Deeprun Tram today. Considering this background information, did Mekkatorque think he was owed anything in return for this fantastic favor? Also, keep in mind why the troggs suddenly appeared out of nowhere in the first place - I suppose they should have known that dwarves love to delve too greedily and too deep. The answer to the question? Of course not, the guy didn't demand anything nor did he assume a return on investment once the Alliance had recovered from the Second War. Free of charge, pro-bono, just another example of Gelbin being Gelbin! The completion of the Deeprun Tram was downright inspirational in light of this context/circumstances.
Time and again, Mekkatorque was proving that even in Gnomanity’s darkest hour, the rays of its brightest son could still pierce through the veil of depravity and suffering that had suffocated gnomish existence for far too long. With eyes ever forward, Mekkatorque boldly forges a new path forward for his people.
P.S. Wow, suppose I get why they say the tale often grows in the telling … Jesus Christ …
P.S.S. For the reasons enumerated above, Mekkatorque is an all-time Warcraft character for me. I’ve observed that Gnomes sort of have a mixed perception in the community , it seems like people either love them or they hate them. I think if everyone knew the story provided above, they’d come to appreciate gnomes at least a little bit more.
P.S.S.S. Love the channel, always get excited when a new vid comes out. #Gnomergan4LYF3 #MekkaGOAT

It is a shame that side of the lore (gnome and dwarves relations) gets woefully neglected in favor of some *'new' (ha!),* repainted apocalyptic threats trying to doom everything to destruction and or eternal torment!

There is one important lore missed here. It is actual a female gnome that can be considered the "mother" of the dwarves. Ulduman use to house the Earthen(who were affected by the curse of flesh and was put in statics with the hope of being cured later). Mechagnomes took care of them(who all ended up dead/broken due to age) only one female mechagnome(affected by the curse) survived. When she got old she decided to release the Earthen as oppose to letting then up with no one to care for them/end up dead. Thus the first dwarves came into Azeroth.
