There is a company called GSI Outdoors, and last has actual aluminium dutch (or camp) ovens with the appropriate lids. They come in a 10" and 12" models, and weigh less than the Woody. I've never used them but they do look very nice. I have wondered different times how they'd compare with cast iron dutch ovens. it would be fun to see a head to head comparison between a GSI aluminium oven versus a Lodge cast iron oven.
Thanks for the video comparing the Woody and the Lodge. Job well done, Sir.

Thanks for the comment Dale. Like you I have never used the GSI aluminum dutch ovens, primarily as I have been using the 10 inch ovens more and more (Woody is 9x9) and the GSI 10 inch doesn't have feet for coals (ya, pretty weak excuse I know) along with the fact that the Woody intrigued me as it is like Bigfoot amongst the canoeing community-often spoken of but rarely seen! I understand the GSI are quite popular for the rafting industry as they are lighter and not prone to rust.

I had not noticed they were without feet. That seems a bit lame for an outdoor intended dutch oven, I’d think. Quite unfortunate really.
Thanks for the reply and best regards.

@@daleswier8429 The 12 and 14 do have the feet, but the 10 inch doesn't. I think this allows GSI to nest the 10 inch into the 12.

I love my Woody, I would like to find a vintage one though.

Yes, I have enjoyed the Woody despite the results of this review. I am hoping that the video shows people it even exists as it is not well known outside a small group of (I expect) canoe/kayak folks. The original would be cool to find but I expect they are few and far between at this point and one would have to be lucky to stumble onto one. Good luck with that search!

@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 The reason I'm here it's because at the age of 56 I'm getting back into camping again. I just got out the old Woody since I've had since I was a teenager and want to compare it to my cast iron dutch oven.

@@serpensphile Congratulations in getting back into it! Having an original Woody is a pretty rare thing I think so have a great time with it. Let us know how the comparison comes out for you.

On Lodge 5 quart Dutch in the kitchen, beans are always uneven, there is a trick to this but I don't know it, do you? I am a subscriber already. This was an enjoyable video, you have good presence.

I am assuming you mean they are cooking unevenly. I am no bean expert but what I do pretty much always is soak them overnight (or all day) before cooking in salted water (about 1/2T kosher salt per qt of water). I normally end up using a flame tamer to keep the beans at a very low simmer as well like this one amzn.to/47pyhzh
There may always be outliers in every bean pack but this works well for me. I also give them a stir now and then when cooking.
      Good luck!

Thank you for the info sir. I'm on the fence aluminum or Lodge. I'm going with the Lodge for the simple fact of heat retention and if oil spills down the side season it on cast iron no stains. Aluminum will show.

It really is a trade off-cast iron retains heat but can rust and does require routine maintenance. Aluminum much lighter and won’t rust but less heat retention. I would take a hard look at your use, environment etc and go from there. Stains could be looked at as character lines!
