Dickin' Around Outdoors
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 31 พ.ค. 2020
Call it what you want-camping, overlanding, RVing-it is all about getting outdoors and enjoying what this great world has to offer. I have been camping since I was a Boy Scout in the 1970s and have been amazed by the explosion of popularity in the last few years. There are always questions about gear, recipes, etc. so I created this channel in order to pass on information, recipes and product reviews of outdoor and camping equipment that I use hoping it will help those new to camping or looking for information to make more informed choices.
I look forward to having you join us on our journey and I look forward to learning from you as we go.

Flame King vs Fuel Keg. Is One A Better Refillable Propane Bottle?
Refillable 1 pound propane bottles can save you a lot of money and in the future might be the only choice. For a long time Flame King was the only choice and served us well but now Mr. Heater has introduced the Fuel Keg system to compete. We take a look at both and tell you if we feel one is better than the other.

Good info, thanks for sharing and taking the time to educate us!
Wood matches for my cigar, and I just roll up a piece of paper and light it to put in a fire. That's my opinion and experience, yours works as well. Thanks for the content
You can light a cigar with a Zippo
The manual says to also replace the axel oil at the first oil change (12,000 miles). Did you do that?
I followed along on google maps as best I could. what a road that is!
Great video, out of K cups so using our camp percolator this morning at home😅
Wow! I should have watched your video a year ago.😅Thank you!
I love my Lodge Carbon steel, its supposed to be more of an outdoor pan but I use it at home all the time.
Very good and interesting commentary of driving experience
Too bad you can't take the full bar with you when you go camping
I do my best!
Good demonstration and in fine print. It says you cannot use it on an induction cooktop. So it was a waste of money for me. However It did work well on my little butane stove for making biscuits.
Good that you have something you can use it on! Thanks for taking the time to comment and for checking out the channel.
Would you use it on wine
@@glendabetels5623 Not on wine, they are working on one to take sulfites out of wine though.
Just received my kit and 6 extra 1# cylinders.I used 5 of the disposable cylinders during our 8 day power outage during Helene hurricane aftermath .Next time I’ll be better prepared. I also picked up 2 of Flame King’s cute little 3oz refillable cylinders for my propane torch!
@@ATfan23 I think you will really like them. We use the refillable bottles exclusively now and, in fact, are working on a comparison video between Flame King and Fuel Keg bottles. Spoiler alert I don’t think one is better than the other.
another nice video THANKS
We appreciate the kind words-thanks for dropping by.
That is a good test for this product, I really like your bar set up (and your friends). I also have a big collection of Whiskey and various spirits as I like to make craft cocktails as a small hobby and drink enjoyment as well of course. I like to see there are others in this "tribe".
We appreciate you swinging by the bar and I am glad you found it interesting. Happy to be a '"tribe" member!
Why would you fail to give the name of the ship?
Guess the script writer forgot to add that! Matanuska if you are curious. Thanks for checking out the channel.
Thank you for making this video its very helpful. So its generally just myself and my husband, and Id want to be able to cook either stew or chicken breasts and veggies or a small roast and veggies, so would you suggest the 10" shallow or deep, based on your info Im thinking the deep? Or go up to the 12" shallow?
Thanks for checking out the channel. The 10" deep oven is 5qt and for Camera Lady and myself that is our most used Lodge oven when we are out camping. I think it is the most usable for all around cooking as you describe and for two people it is a good size. If you do have a nagging itch that you need bigger i would go to the 12 inch deep as the deep ovens will accommodate larger roasts and such than the shallow ones. Often at home we use 5.5 qt enameled ovens and there have been very few times, but some, where our recipe was pretty close to the top so just keep an eye on the recipes from cookbooks and you will be in good shape.
@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 Great! Thank you for getting back to me 👍
@@kevlarspirit392 of course-when you buy one I suggest a couple rounds of seasoning before the first use just to get a good head start. If you will be cooking outside (using the camp oven) with coals on the top I suggest also getting a lid lifter and lid stand (if you will be cooking at camp) I have links to these on our Amazon storefront if you want to check them out under the Camp Cooking tab. Here is the link www.amazon.com/shop/dickinaroundoutdoors?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsfshop_ZTMG6YGJ5491NV1H3CS4
This Device is only practical in windy conditions 8-28 mph. The question is " How often are you in those conditions? " It would be More Practical if there was a way to simply attach High in a tree or a roof. The tools displayed don't indicate anything more than a pure ground mount. I read somewhere that "wind turbines are only effective when set at 30ft off the ground. The theory is it's always windy above 30 ft. I want one, well because It's a Tool. I love "just in case" Tools.
You are absolutely correct that it requires a special set of conditions to be most effective. As mentioned in the video I can see something like higher elevations, windy beaches etc as prime spots. It would not be the "one" I chose vs solar for example but as you say, it is another tool in the kit.
Looks like a nice product! Elevated coffee right there. Too bad the website is sort of difficult to understand. Pretty weak warranty though.
Ya, it is a bit confusing as it has a 6 month warranty but they will fix free for 18 months I think it said. It doesn't seem to have any failure points but heck, who knows.
Nice video
Awesome share
So I take it that the DACLL grinder will grind fine enough for espresso?
I am not an espresso maker so I cannot confirm that it will grind to your specifications. Their description lists espresso grind so they say yes but I expect espresso precision might have some degree of personal preference.
@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 thanks!
I use the Aeropress GO or a pour over on the trail. I have a Porlex mini hand grinder, but bought the VSSL one because it looks more trail friendly and has better burrs. It does grind very well, is a bit spendy, but is too heavy so it stays home where I use it every day. So I usually use the Aeropress and the Porlex at camp.
Ya, I expect this DACLL is closer to the VSSL in weight and may be too heavy for your use. Thanks for dropping by the channel.
cool idea for the Aeropress. We have an insulated French Press, very lightweight, 2 cup capacity, that we take camping. Also take a hand grinder. We've done the Aeropress too, but yes, then you have to futz with the paper filters. French Press is easier. Maybe I'll consider getting the metal filter for the Aero, but I do like the insulating feature of the French Press
We also carry a bit larger French Press (Stanley insulated) when we are making more coffee. The FPs are great and there is no waste but they can be a bit big in capacity for some days. Heck we normally just take instant for our longer trips and consider it the price of entry. So many good options out there.
@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 we have taken instant at times too, especially when backpacking. But we've not been able to find any instant that compares to the real thing. We've used Starbucks Via and also Mount Hagen, but neither comes close. Yeah, I know, picky, picky. But it's seems like such a small thing to take real coffee. When backpacking, we grind the night before the trip, and at camp we bring water to a boil, take it off the heat, add the ground coffee, wrap in a beanie cap to hold in the heat, let it steep for 4 or 5 minutes, then strain thru a small fine mesh strainer that weighs less than one ounce. Basically French Press without the container. What brand of instant do you use?
@@pimacanyon6208 We have been taking the Starbucks in the can here amzn.to/3NTfF2t and I think it is better than the Via. To be candid though we are pretty casual with our coffee but we do think this one is a step up in instant. I know this link is three cans but it was the first thing I saw-they have blonde, medium and dark roast and we normally buy in our local grocery when we find it on sale.
I love my Aeropress, I might need this grinder. Thanks for the video.
It sure is a great way to make those single cups! Thanks for checking out the video.
I just bought a small grinder from amazon that is stainless steel it packs in a 3 inch sq. box, it screws on to a mason jar ,it works well enough but takes a lot longer to grind coffee, but I only grind for myself. thanks again for your reviews
I have seen those and think they are pretty neat grinders. Ya, my first handheld grinder took over two minutes and was pretty tedious, this one feeds super quickly.
another nice video THANKS
What happened to you Grenadier? Hope you're gonna do more videos of it.
@@michaelyapp6099 it is still in San Diego for repairs from the Baja incident. I am hoping to have it back before Christmas. I will do a video on the whole story before long.
That looks like a very nice coffee grinder, Dick! It looks well built, easy to use and definitely handy while camping, or even taking in a hotel! Excellent review!👍👍
Thanks, it works very well for my uses and I am looking forward to using it out in the hinterlands!
Haven't hear about the Grenny lately, Has it recovered from the Mexico trip? Last I heard it may have had water in the fuel. Did I miss the followup video? Thank You...
Sadly you didn't miss it but I should have an update up on the channel soon (fingers crossed). Short version is that it wasn't water, due to the fender bender and transfer case cooler damage the truck shut down the fuel pump. It was towed to San Diego where it still sits, currently all we are waiting for is the insurance from Mexico to come through and expect that next week then we can get it buttoned up.
@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 Oh man, that's more extensive than I thought. Sorry to hear about the extent of damage. Also, the amount of time you've been without it. Hope that works out for you and look forward to the updated video. Love your videos...
@@bobbyheskett Thanks so much. I expect to have it back before the end of the year. The upside is that, given it has been in a fender bender, I am more comfortable in considering what modifications to make since the resale probably now lower! 🙄
Enjoy your day

I got 3 of these!! 🖤🖤🖤
I always use my zippo,s for camp fires and i never had any trouble with lighting a cigar but nice video
Thanks for dropping by the channel. Although I still carry a liquid Zippo as well and love it I find the butane to work better when inverted as in reaching down into a fire pit.
Why wouldn't you just go with the Ryobi Rechargeable true battery operated air compressor over this not to mention the same price tag as this obviously without a battery, battery charger, hose and tire clamp
Thanks for taking the time to comment and for checking out the channel. I am sure the Ryobi is a great compressor and would serve folks well. The Etenwolf, for me, is a lightweight, one piece unit that is very easy to use and works great within the scenarios I mentioned. At the current $99 price tag with my code or on Amazon it seems a great bargain as well.
@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 Yah, Upon double checking it i think im going with the etenwolf my bad on my comment. People state the ryobi is for quick bursts not totally for inflation. I want where the Etenwolf can fill less than a min for nothing crazy but also if i do need for a flat. Yah i noticed it for $99 on amazon. Going to try it out.

"Wider individual" lol. Will be interesting to see what Ineos does for seats in 2025. And what kind of future Ineos will have. Sure your steering wheel alignment issue isn't due to the crown on the road ?
Nice pump. You can always recharge from a power bank if you run low. Thank you for showing this to us, Dick. Stay safe and stay warm
Yep you are correct and it could be used multiple times in one day assuming that the trail is long and the vehicle output is 45w or higher. Have a great day.
End of the Road Park Homer Spit Rd. , Homer, Alaska.
Been there a time or two, I think the Salty Dog is displaying a $ or two of mine!
Nice detailed review but it looks kind of big compared to a medium sized Viair. The bag looks enormous. Also if you are doing wintertime offroading/overlanding you probably won't be able to fill 4 tires on one charge.
Thanks for dropping by. Physically the bag is around the same size as my Viair 450 kit and the pump is proportionally the same size. It is, however, drastically lighter than the Viair so mobility is easier. I was going to mention the air temp but not having used it yet in freezing weather I would only have been speculating. I assume, like you do, that it will be less efficient when freezing weather arrives but you could always put it in a heated cab to help address the concern. More testing it sounds like!
Thank you so much for the sharings!!! 😀
A lot of vehicles have ac plugs in them nowadays (especially overlanders) so you could recharge on the trail.
You are absolutely right if you will be on the trail for many hours. It was an oversight on my part as I was going to mention that, especially if you were parking overnight and hitting a second trail the next day. Thanks for making a great comment and pointing this out.
Great video 👌 nicely done, 🎉 hope you have a great week😎👍👏
Thank you for this video. Could you measure the height of the stove and a second measurement with the cast iron pan? I would like to order the stove and a wind break.
The height of the burner on the legs to the cooking surface is 4" with the highest point on the grate being 4.25 (but not where the pan sits). Adding a Lodge 8 inch skillet brings the total height to 5 3/4 inches. I used a tape so there may be an 8th either way but for a wind break purpose this should work for you. If you are going to order one can we ask that you use our link in the comments as that affiliate link provides a small level of support to our channel without any additional cost to you. If you are purchasing from another vendor I may be able to provide links to those as well if you let me know. Thanks for checking out the channel.
@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 thank you for providing the measurements. I will use the links when I'm ready to make my purchase. By the way, did the stove work with propane? I'm thinking of buying an IGT 2 unit to use on road trips.
@@enriquepadilla8826 It did work with propane but when used on the legs you need something to prop the propane bottle up slightly since the fuel hose is too short for the bottle to stand up. Have you seen our review of the IGT starter set which includes the flat burner. You can see it here th-cam.com/video/NNEkjgHREec/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rvlrrSBUPw5EEfH1 and it might prove more economical if you are considering both items. There are links there as well.
@@dickinaroundoutdoors8609 Thank you for the feedback. I will take a look at your review of the IGT. I'm thinking of buying a hose adapter from Camping Moon which has the ISO Butane on one end and a 1lb propane bottle connection on the other end. I spend 3 to 6 months traveling every year visiting family and visiting new places. It would be nice to be to cook a nice meal once in a while. I'm thinking of buying a 2 unit IGT and adding side tables to increase the work space. I've been looking at Snow Peak and Stanluck. Stanluck sells the 2 unit IGT and a sturdy bag. In 2022, I drove to Alaska after picking up and modding my Jeep. Although it was a great experience I realize I need to slim down my Jeep and add a few comfort items.
@@enriquepadilla8826 We have driven through Alaska as well in our JKU (actually did Tuk then over to AK and back on the Alaska Ferry - a whole bunch of videos on that). I don't know Stanluck at all, looks like some compatible with SnowPeak or knock offs but have used SnowPeak for many years and have never had any problems with them. Not saying anything negative on Stanluck, just have never seen one other than online.
I think a small powerbank and small flexible solar panel would serve me better. I also think the 40 watt output claim is bunk.
This is certainly an item for specific environments/conditions so use case is critical. I also use a small solar panel (as well as larger 200w units) so having the right tool for the job is the way to go.
Please be aware you are encouraging users to wind all of the rope onto the drum and you are discounting the "STOP" label on the rope. Sadly that's there for a reason. If you wind all of that rope onto the drum you run the risk of damaging the rope as it will be crushed against the inside of the CSM and you can bend the tie bars on the winch. Please STOP winching in when the stop label reaches the fairlead.
Thanks for your insight and taking the time to comment.
