He could have just asked us to look at something else so others can check out the Color Computer. But, I digress. Pietro's Pizza was one of my favorite places in the food court to get a slice or two. It’s the same with every generation, we feel bad for the younger ones and that feel sorry for us. Doesn’t matter when you grew up, everyis going to think theirs is the best
As a teen, I loved shopping at Deb’s! I don’t think they’re around anymore, but they were kind of like Rue 21 is today. Deb’s had all of the cool, in style clothing plus cute “homecoming” type dresses that were really affordable.
I loved Things Remembered. The first gift I ever bought for my husband before we got married was a key fob with his name engraved on it. He still has it 31 years later.
i went to the mall for two things - music and books. I really miss browsing the stacks and bins to see what was new and what was a gem hidden in the bargain bin. Yes, I am a tail end Boomer (b. 1962) and have some nostalgia for the malls, but i think that the current generations will never understand the sense of community that they brought to the older generations.
I miss Wicks N Sticks. I used to work as a supervisor at one and it was my favorite job. I loved walking in and getting overpowered by the smells of all the Yankee candles and all the displays of glass oil lamps and novelty wax burners and stuff.
Ohhh I remember! And the candles that were in the shapes of animals and ice cream cones .. I never wanted to actually burn those lol . Thank you for the memory
Being an 80s kid, it's amazing to me that people would rather drive around to different stores or shop in an open strip mall in the weather over shopping in a mall. It's sad how antisocial the younger generations are.
💯 One thing about the mall is that you could eat, shop, be entertained, etc without concern for the weather. Once you were inside, you were good for the entire day and didn’t have to worry about being, cold, hot, or rained on. 👍🏾
Hopefully some of them will stay around. And I do agree we had too many. I didn't realize how many small towns once had them I thought only larger cities had them.
Former Payless ShoeSource manager here. When I noticed the prices increasing and less foot traffic (especially in mall locations) I knew it was declining. Too bad as I really enjoyed the job and wore the shoes...
I wish my small city still had a Payless. They had a decent selection of wide width shoes for women and kids. Now it's a Maurice's, and I never go in there.
I remember when Payless Shoes used to be Fayva Shoes. My mom never got me shoes there, she said they were cheaply made and wouldn't be comfortable. As a kid/teen I loved to go in and try them all on though. 😂
I think the 80s and early 90s were some of the best times for it. Technology was still limited, when in hindsight was probably better. Ever since the population boom after the 2000s plus the fact the internet got into the hands of everyone, it has just been downhill since then.
When I was in my late teens 1970 they opened a new mall near me. My favorite store was Woolworth. They had a great sporting goods section where you could also buy target shooting supplies including ammunition. Try that today. They had a great sidewalk cafe where you could sit with a cup of coffee and your high school buddy and watch the pretty girls walk by. 😁👍 Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺👩🏻
I agree. Back then before the internet and mobile phones, all major social activities were in-person. You left home to go out and see people, and so did everyone else. Entire groups of people would attend a function all for the same shared reasons. We can't really come close to that using the internet, though all things have their pros and cons.
There were lots of clothing stores that we loved as girls. Fashion Bug, Casual Corner, Winkleman’s, Korvettes Department Store, Baker Shoes, Kinney Shoes, Tom McCann…
Sagebrush was another one. I had a small waist, an ass, and athletic thighs. 😂 NOT the 80's ideal body type! Fashion Bug had the best fitting jeans for my body type. My bff, whom I met in my 40s, had the same favorite jeans. She was/is even curvier than I was/am. ETA: I will be 50 this year. Yes, that's me in my profile pic. I look older in person, especially with recent health issues, but it turned out that my body is falling apart, and I looked younger than what one would expect is for the same reason. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Diagnosed at 49.
I never bought z. Cavaricci at merry go round BUT I did make my father take me there after he picked me up from work. I was 15 and knew my mom would not approve of the white leather bustier I was about to buy- so I took my dad. Lol lol
I miss a lot of things growing up going to the mall. I worked at 2 different stores in my local mall and loved to peoplewatch. I liked Radio Shack. I bought my son a red, 2-foot-tall remote-controlled robot there. I also bought a nice police scanner, too. I miss a LOT of the old stores. Thanks, Rhett. Always nice to have a look back at great memories. 😊
I miss those days. My mom and I would always get separated from my dad and if we couldn't find him we'd always check Radio Shack. That's usually where he was. They're both gone now, and I almost can't believe it. I'd love to have a day at the mall with them again.
@@jenniferhansen3622 Aww, my heart goes out to you. I don't have my parents any longer either. That story of finding your dad at Radio Shack made me laugh. 😄Hold those great memories in your heart forever❤❤.
I miss going into the mall this time of year it was just a feeling in the air that you can't describe. I also did retail management in the mall, and even though it was exhausting and I complained about it, then I do miss that time now. We all need to get out of the house and start shopping in person again! Come on, everyone, only WE can change the dynamic!
My favorite store has got to be KB Toys! Oh man just going to that store during the Holidays was super exciting especially for a young child of the 1980s!
@jenniferhansen3622 Me too infact I still somewhat remember the Cabbage Patch Doll craze(born in 1980)and how insane everyone went trying to get one at KB Toys.
Spencer's was very educational. They sold a book in their 18-plus restricted section called "Basic Golf". It was very informative, and held your attention. 😄
Here's one that's semi-on-topic... anyone else remember going to the mall and being assaulted by the chemical reek emanating from the salon, or whatever they were called? As soon as you got a whiff, you knew someone was getting a perm. 🙂
Growing up just south of Chicago, I remember our local mall having Radio Shack, Montgomery Wards, Camelot Music, Payless Shoes, and Aladdin's Castle Arcade that sticks out. A Kaybee toys was in there for a while too.
Yes! All of those stores were also here in Oklahoma City. I went to all of them. I miss the arcades especially, it was the whole context of video games in the culture that made it special, you usually had to go there to play the games (they hadn't yet fully made it into people's homes). You sometimes saw other regulars -- and play a "two player" game together. Today you can download any of them, or play with others online, still okay but not the same.
What about the mall bookstores, B. Dalton, Bookstop, Borders, Crown Books, Encore Books, Waldenbooks, etc.; you could probably do a whole video on them alone.
Why go to the mall? To leave your couch? To get dressed? To meet with good friends? To have lunch there and purchase that thing you wanted in order for people to keep their jobs? To make memories so you can smile in the future when you remember those days? Why?
You can probably make several videos on defunct mall stores. The list is quite long. I remember stores like the Chess King, Deb's (my sisters went there), Maurice's, B.Dalton's, Waldon Books, K-B Toys, Media Play, Merry-go-Round, Fashion Bug (sisters also shopped there), and Kinney Shoes, to name but a few! Malls will be with us though their numbers will continue to decline along with traditional mall stores.
Maurice's is still around, especially in small Midwestern towns. They really aren't my style but it's literally the only women's clothing store where I live.
SoCal GenX'er here, once again dropping some mall stores that'll hopefully be remembered. Casa De Candles (lotta hippie stuff!) J.K.Gill's (think Staples, but smaller) The Tinder Box (the scent alone was nostalgic) Small World Gift and Novelties (similar to Spencers) Karl's Toys & Hobbies (only one I knew of was at Puente Hills)
I miss the bookstores. Going to the mall was an experience. Meeting friends to go shopping, dropping by the arcade to play a round of Ms. Pac-Man and checking out the guys. We had Polsky's, O'Neil's, Sears, and Camelot Music. Claires was where we got our ears pierced. The Limited, Express, GAP, Casual Corner, Benetton, Esprit, were our go to stores. Some are still here but not like the good old days. I was sad when Payless closed. Another very relatable upload. Thank you my friend 😊
I loved the Oak Tree. There use to be one in the Prestonwood Mall in Dallas, TX that I would frequent during my senior year of high school and after. While I don't have any more trousers I bought from there, I still have these three shirts. I guess they'd be considered vintage now! Then there was this mall in the city I lived in - they had a Hastings and a Camelot. What I liked about Hastings was that they carried imported vinyl and cassettes, but that store wasn't as hug as the Camelot which was on the upper level and pretty close to it.
This is a confessional...Knowing we were going to the Mall afterwards was the only thing we looked forward to about going to Church on Sundays. Online shopping doesn't have a food court or arcades. Kids these days don't what they missed.
My ten year old son loves going to the mall, when his father and I tell him stories on how malls used to have arcades, toy stores, all of the stores we used to have and show him these types of videos, he tell us that we need to bring everything back and not shop online.
@@CherryBlossom28479my kiddo and I enjoy going to the mall together. She also goes with my husband. We hit up FYE records, Spencer's, GameStop, and Barnes & Noble books. The food court has the staples and has added a great new gelato place.
Hi Rhett . I remember a lot of these stores being in malls . A few that I remember seeing back then that have disappeared are Suncoast video stores and Brooks and Casual Corner which were women's clothing stores and Kaybee toy stores.
My first & most favorite job was with KB Toys (Kay Bee Toys). I remember when "Payless Shoes" was actually called Volume Shoes Source Lol. Without the toy, music or bookstores, today's malls just seem empty bland. Thanks Rhetty for keeping memories of happier times alive!
Same. It's not the same as it was in my prime shopping days (late 90s, early 00s). But I'm sure the teens from the first store in CA would say the same to me 😅
Payless is one the very missed stores in our Mall. The Logan Valley Mall use to be a Mecca for shopping in central Pennsylvania. It's a ghost town now with a community College using part of the building. It is at least keeping it open. Rave and The Deb are two stores friends and I still talk about missing. Macy's is very open and sparse, but still open. I did find two new stores open on my last trip. A resale shop and a local furniture store! Nittany Mall in State College is slated to be turned into a casino!
I had County seat in this video and a couple of those others were in a previous episode. You did mention some good ones to cover next though. Thank you for watching!
Sadly, part of the decline of malls was/is a "criminal element" hanging around inside and outside the malls. No one wants to go somewhere that isn't safe.
As I understand it, another element is greedy mall owners charging extortionist-level rent for stores no bigger than the mobile home I used to live in.
You could not be more right. Even Mall of America has become a dystopian thug gangster hangout. We shop online - we all have our pants pulled up and no one is carrying a gun.
Miss Sears, Babbages, Sharper Image, Teavana, Brookstone, Orange Julius, Toys R Us, Kay Bee Toys, Woolworths, Radio Shack, and plenty of other mall staples.
I always thought name changes, destroys the bulk of Goodwill in the community and to keep doing it, guarantees failure. I have seen it happen to many times were rebranding killed stores. Fix the business model problem and don't destroy the goodwill of the brand you bought.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts Kirk. It is strange how they decide to change the names of places and sometimes it is just too many times.
@@RhettyforHistory Ain't that the truth, when it becomes a new name. People stop going to it as they know another store that they can go to for they can get what they are looking for.
I worked at Wet Seal in the long gone City Center mall in Columbus Ohio over 20 years ago. I really loved working in the mall and being in the mall even though throughout my childhood and teenage years I was too poor to ever be able to buy anything from any store. I remember Trade Winds, Rave, Merry Go Round, Contempo, and there was this one really cool science store that I forget the name of. If anyone remembers a science mall chain store please let me know. It was my favorite store to go into.
Hey Rhetty, I loved this video very much. I really miss the way we used to enjoy malls it’s just not the same anymore. I miss KB toys EB - before it became GameStop, Biz kids, The Disney stores, Lerners, Gymboree, Gadzooks, Waldenbooks, Burdines, and enjoying the food courts with family and friends. There are so many other stores I didn’t name that I miss a lot. Also, famous mall arcades like Starbucks. Arcades of the past would really be a great video all on its own! ❤ 80s and 90s were the last decades of its time. If you know you definitely know.
Not exactly but yes in a way. They were acquired by Barnes and Noble and the locations were all closed but they revived the name in 2022 so it may be possible to see the name somewhere. Thank you for watching aariley!
Omg Delia’s and Mandee was my jam! And Filene’s basement from time to time. VIM was a denim store not sure if that was just an NYC thing or not. I love these videos!
I’ve never heard of Filene’s basement but it explains a quote from The Office by Dwight Schrute to a female guest at Pam and Jim’s wedding. I never understood his reference to “Filene’s basement” and I’ve watched “Office” episodes over and over - this one stumped me. I’m assuming this is a regional company? The Office setting being in Scranton PA. I’m in Virginia so I have no idea.
I met my best friend in Things Remembered in 1995. She was the manager of the store. Then when they shut down her store, she went into banking. Lots of great memories at the store. Rest In Paradise, Queen RO.
I remember Music Plus, Sam Goody (both music stores but not same company if I recall correctly.) Software Etc. was a sister store to Babbage’s that focused more on PC Gaming. They also sold 3DO systems and games whereas Babbage’s did not. There are other mall stores like Mervyn’s and Gottschalk’s, The May Company and Robinson’s which merged into Robinson’s May which you may or may not have already covered in a previous video.
Yeah, it pretty much was a "Holy Tech Trinity" of gaming stores in bigger malls. You had Electronics Boutique, which was like 85% Console gaming, Software Etc that was like 85% PC gaming, and Babbages - a 50/50 split of both. All three were awesome.
Z-Gallery here in SF was one I really missed! I was just talking about a behemoth mall in Cupertino, CA - Vallco Fashion Park that my dad and all three of my brothers worked on eventually in the late 70s to early 80s as the expansion of it continued! In recent years I've read that the entire property has been flattened!
Yeah still hard to believe it is gone. It was such a nice place and they even had a bakery in there. Just an empty space now; the elaborate development planned for the site got hung up in legalities. Glad we hit to experience it!
I remember a York steak house in our mall...summit park mall in Niagara Falls New York. We would go there on Sundays after church. The mall is permanently closed now, but i remember going there to hang out with friends. Some of the stores mentioned in this video were in that mall.
Back then I was managing a Radio Shack store in a mall, and I have to say it's was one of the better times to work in especially at Christmas. Everyone seemed to be smiling, and getting along, Christmas music was playing throughout the mall, the Food court was incredible, and best part of it all the ladies were all decked out in their finest. Man those were great times. Also no one ever worried about having something really bad happen in any of the malls (compared to today). Things were so much more carefree, and relaxing.

It’s the same with every generation, we feel bad for the younger ones and that feel sorry for us. Doesn’t matter when you grew up, everyis going to think theirs is the best
Who remembers Merry Go Round? I loved that store even if it was pricey for the time.
As a teen, I loved shopping at Deb’s! I don’t think they’re around anymore, but they were kind of like Rue 21 is today. Deb’s had all of the cool, in style clothing plus cute “homecoming” type dresses that were really affordable.
I'm almost 40yoldm and I remember my mom dragging me into Debs so she could shop....
I used to LOVE Deb! We also had a store called Ormond's that was the same type of store as Deb.
I remember they had fun socks.
Thank you for watching and sharing the store you loved shopping at Sarah!
They had a really great plus sized section, too! Really great variety of super cute clothes, in bigger sizes. I loved that place.
I loved Things Remembered. The first gift I ever bought for my husband before we got married was a key fob with his name engraved on it. He still has it 31 years later.
That was the perfect gift then if he still has it. Thank you for watching Melancholy1966!
The last time I walked into Things Remembered, I walked out because the prices were too high. I can't imagine what those prices would be today.
I miss these stores that i grew up with. Progress can be very sad 😢
I doubt that much of anything is progress anymore.
Thank you for watching sonhuynh8222!
You never know what the market will do or where it will shift. A lot of people took to shopping online and receiving their purchases on the doorstep.
@@MisterMikeTexas I rarely ever buy online.
We're proceeding not progressing.
i went to the mall for two things - music and books. I really miss browsing the stacks and bins to see what was new and what was a gem hidden in the bargain bin. Yes, I am a tail end Boomer (b. 1962) and have some nostalgia for the malls, but i think that the current generations will never understand the sense of community that they brought to the older generations.
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories with us David!
I’m a tail end boomer also the dead last ones I was born in 1964 in June I will be 60 in 2 months we lived at the mall.
I miss Wicks N Sticks. I used to work as a supervisor at one and it was my favorite job. I loved walking in and getting overpowered by the smells of all the Yankee candles and all the displays of glass oil lamps and novelty wax burners and stuff.
That is a great one that you mentioned. Thank you for watching SavaFiend!
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts McPh1741!
💯 One thing about the mall is that you could eat, shop, be entertained, etc without concern for the weather. Once you were inside, you were good for the entire day and didn’t have to worry about being, cold, hot, or rained on. 👍🏾

Yes they are and it's really sad to see them going. Thank you for watching Joseph!
I remember a real estate investor saying years ago that America had too many malls and that half of them needed to close. Sadly, he was right.
Hopefully some of them will stay around. And I do agree we had too many. I didn't realize how many small towns once had them I thought only larger cities had them.

Wilson's Leather is one that I miss. They always had the coolest jackets.

Former Payless ShoeSource manager here. When I noticed the prices increasing and less foot traffic (especially in mall locations) I knew it was declining. Too bad as I really enjoyed the job and wore the shoes...
I wish Payless was still around, I loved the shoes.
I wish my small city still had a Payless. They had a decent selection of wide width shoes for women and kids. Now it's a Maurice's, and I never go in there.
Thank you for watching and sharing your experience working there!
@@CherryBlossom28479they are online and they are supposed to reopen some stores
I remember when Payless Shoes used to be Fayva Shoes. My mom never got me shoes there, she said they were cheaply made and wouldn't be comfortable. As a kid/teen I loved to go in and try them all on though. 😂
Going to the mall used to be an amazing time. Now many of the great places they had at the malls are gone unfortunately.
Media Play was a store that sold books, magazines, records and other material. Out of business about 12 years ago.

I think the 80s and early 90s were some of the best times for it. Technology was still limited, when in hindsight was probably better. Ever since the population boom after the 2000s plus the fact the internet got into the hands of everyone, it has just been downhill since then.
I love this channel. The subject matter, the music, the calming voice of the narrator. This could very well be my emotional support channel.

No, I don't think it is either. Thank you for watching RetroMythologist!
Always loved the water fountain sculptures in the mall. All malls had them. It was a sad day when the malls started to remove them.
I miss Suncoast. Back then, they had a good selection of vhs and movie memorabilia repros, posters, etc.

😁👍
Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺👩🏻
Hi Paul 👋😁🇺🇸👱🏼♂️
Woolworth was a great store to have around. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us Paul!
Dress Barn
I remember fashion bug great memories 😊
Fashion Bug! Yes! I remember shopping there for clothes when I was in high school. ❤

That is a good one to mention and they were certainly in malls. Thank you for watching Matt!
I miss those days. My mom and I would always get separated from my dad and if we couldn't find him we'd always check Radio Shack. That's usually where he was. They're both gone now, and I almost can't believe it. I'd love to have a day at the mall with them again.

Chess King, Wilson Leathers, Spencer Gifts, Hickory Farms, and of course, Orange Julius were all very popular stores in our mall in central MA.

Sadly, part of the decline of malls was/is a "criminal element" hanging around inside and outside the malls. No one wants to go somewhere that isn't safe.
As I understand it, another element is greedy mall owners charging extortionist-level rent for stores no bigger than the mobile home I used to live in.
