When I was a baby and toddler, my grandmother would take me shopping. We lived in Las Vegas, and it really was an entirely different world back then! The store we went to was called "Mayfair". It was at the corner of Tropicana and either paradise, or Maryland Parkway, I'm not sure. That was for canned goods and produce. Then we'd go to this little Italian deli to buy cheese and cold cuts. Then to the bread store, and lastly to Schulman's meats for beef, chicken, pork, etc. A shopping day was a full day for grandma and me. I'm going to be 55 in 2 days, but I still remember our shopping routine. ❤

A&P. I remember my mother getting the stamps and filling up the cards to redeem for household items. Every time I went with she’d buy me a pack of Fruit Stripe gum. 😂 2 chews and that stuff as done.
@@kristinwood8884 Yep! It was a green stamp thing. A&P near me closed in the very early 80's. I have not seen anything the likes of green stamps since. Jewel and Dominick's had promotions along the same lines, but nothing like the A&P
@@Slamgod in Sussex, NJ the main grocery store forever was A&P, up until 2002, it may still be there. I'm from a town in FL Vero Beach, that has at least 6 Publixs. I recently moved to upstate NY, Wegmans is as close as I will get to Publix.😔 (Except for vacations) A&P reminds me of Winn Dixie, Kroger, now in NY Tops. I'll always miss Publix..
In the Detroit area, through the 1970s and 80s, we had Great Scott, Chatham, Danny's Foods, Foodland, and up until 2000 or so, Farmer Jack was a big name! Sad to see them disappear, especially when now I see a big sign with faded shadows of what used to be the Farmer Jack logo with some leftover wire and pegs still in the sign
Smith’s has seemed to utterly disappear. Other stores 🏬 have merged into other companies. Montgomery Ward’s, Lamont’s, Carr’s 🚗, Radio Shack 📻 and Sears, have utterly died. Your friend, Jeff.

here in Peoria Illinois, we miss our A&P and our Eagle grocery stores so much... we were just talking about them, not more than 3 days ago. Thank you for this video!!!
I remember as a kid helping my Dad packing shelves he worked for Nabisco years ago. And many of those stores are long gone like Grand Union, Pantry Pride, Save-A-Lot, Basics, Sun, Treasury, Jeffersons and Phar-mor. This was in South Florida back then. Miss those days so much.
I once watched a TH-cam video about a man [whose hobby was visiting dead malls and abandoned buildings] looking outside a long abandoned Kohl's [grocery]. I was in awe of the overall architecture but became sad when the man peeked inside with his camera
I remember Market Basket, Lucky/Thrifty, Stater Bros, and The Giant in Anaheim, The Boys in Huntington Beach, Mayfair Market in Silverlake, and McMahan's Market in the Inland Empire back in the 70's and 80's. Market Basket had those automatic coffee and soda machines with paper cups and ice. I thought they were so cool!
Growing up in the 1960 , every Saturday night my family of 6 would all pack ourselves into the family station wagon and head out to A&P , under $ 100 dollars would feed the whole family for the week including the stop at the local butchers aww the good old days ☮️
Only one I've heard of is A&P. We had a few in Pittsburgh that didn't last. My dad shopped at a local ma and pop grocery store mostly so I don't remember too many others. We did have a Kroger's, but it wasn't very close and they're still around.
Oh, definitely room for a part two on this topic! Northern California had several small to larger chains that went by the wayside over the decades! Food Villa, Fry's, PW Super and Gemco to name a few! Where I went to high school there were two almost identical large retail lot spaces right across the street from each other! One housed a full Alpha Beta and the other had an Albertsons for some reason! A funny thing about the Fry's Supermarkets. When they decided to go into electronics in the 90s they didn't change the font on the signs from the grocery stores and the old mascot that was a smiling grocery bag then became a smiling computer chip! Haha!
Back in the early eighties there was a store called Skag's Alpha Beta in College Station Texas. Never saw a one anywhere else in Texas and that store was rebranded as a Houston-based Gerland's soon after. It's now part of the A&M campus.
I only know if Fry's as an electronic store and didn't realize they were once a grocery store. That is fascinating. Thank you for watching and telling us a little more about them. I do need to do a part two and Frys was on my radar for being an electronics store.
*laughs* God I remember Gemco. They had those yellow pricetags. I think we still had some unopened 'new' Kodak film rolls found when cleaning out the garage a few years back.
In Winston Salem NC, we had Food Fair, (not to be confused with the other mentioned in this video), A&P, Winn Dixie, Kroger. Now we have Walmart, Aldi, Lidl, Publix, and Whole Foods.
So glad to see Dominick's make it, I grew up with my mom shopping there and then shopped their myself. And I still miss it. Also nice surprise to see Eagle, just because even in and around Chicago it doesn't get the much attention when people talk about stores that are no longer around.
Long Island, NY has lost a ton of grocery stores over the years. I believe now it's down to only Shop-Rite and Stop N Shop (there's probably a Whole Foods somewhere as well). I never in my life thought I'd see Pathmark go down but it did.
I used to live on Long Island and I now live in Houston. I got upset when I heard about PathMark and Waldbaum’s closing down. I used to go grocery shopping every weekend with my mom.
I remember Big Star, they were in the Atlanta area. That was where my mom shopped in the 70’s and early 80’s .I can’t remember when they closed their doors.
A & P I went with my parents when I was in elementary school. Liked the H & K green stamps and licked the stamps and paste it in the books! It was around the middle 1960's.
Growing up in North Myrtle Beach, SC I remember going to the A&P with my parents back in the 80's. I always thought it was neat seeing that big red 8 o'clock coffee grinder at the end of the check out. Today, the former A&P is virtually unrecognizable. Currently it houses The Grill House restaurant.
@@phillyjilly Are you talking about the Lucky Eggs machine? It seems like I vaguely remember something like that. I do remember those huge round HVAC vents on the ceiling. As a young kid I always thought there were huge fans behind those vents. The bathroom was in the very back of the store, below the main office. I do remember it was underneath the wooden stairs.
Sad you did not mention Humpty Dumpty Stores in and around Oklahoma City. Worked for them prior to entering the Army in 1966 doing maintenance of all stores including the one in your home town of Moore.
Here in southern NM we had Skaggs Alpha Beta and when they closed another grocery store called Jewel Osco opened then another joint called Raley's. When I was a kid in the 70's Furr's, Fed Mart, Foodway, and Piggly Wiggly, (My dad told me when I was little I called it Pee Wee-Wee Wee lol) were our main suppliers. Not sure if any of these are still around. So sad to see them go. The last four I mentioned were a big part of my childhood. Great memories.
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories stratman. It is interesting to hear of the same stores and some new ones that I have not heard of either.
We had Kash n’ Karry here in Australia but it was spelt Cash and Carry. It opened it 1923, I haven’t seen one for many years, so I think they are finished but I’m not sure. The popular supermarkets here are Woolworths (Woolies) Coles and Aldi. The supermarket experience has definitely changed though. Thanks Rhett. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺
At least the one there was spelled correctly! I wonder who thought up the name first though. Thank you for watching and sharing some of the ones you have there in Australia!
@@waynek3366 We do have Target and Kmart which i heard you also have over there. Kmart here has turned into like a $2.00 store, everything is cheap and of poor quality. Isn’t Walmart like a grocery store and Kmart combined ? Not sure, we don’t have that here.
We no longer have Marsh, Thiftway or Piggly Wiggly in my area. Aldi still opens another checkout line if there are more than a few people waiting, but that's the only store I've been to where it happens consistently.
Back in the 60's and 70's, my mother used to shop at a local independent store but also went to First National (also called Finest) and A&P. I don't know if First National was in other parts of the country?
My mom shopped at Dominick’s in Chicago. She was saying the other day she would have liked to have grocery delivery back then because she didn’t drive until she was 34 and we moved to the suburbs. She used to get a lot of exercise that way.
A&P had a few locations in my town. -- One behind a bank -- one that was built on farmlands. The building grew by New York-based IGA in the 1990s. It's currently owned by local pharmacist as a pharmaceutical store/grocery store/delicatessen. C&S Grocers does supply some items to this store. You'll still see A&P bags around.
It was bittersweet to see Big Bear on here. I grew up shopping there with my parents in the late 80s and can still remember the basic layout of the fruits/vegetables section. Never saw the live bear, but certainly remember the advertising jingles and bear-themed art on the paper bags. Thanks for the memories!
Two local food stores in Milwaukee that disappeared were Sentury Foods and Red Owl Foods. My late uncle was a truck driver for Red Owl Foods out of Green Bay and I still have the red jacket he gave me when delivering food to Milwaukee. There was also Hopper's IGA food store on Milwaukee's south side......S 20th St n W Howard Av. IGA is short for Independent Grocers Association.......
We had an A & P in my hometown of Lewistown, PA. I remember having to tag along with my mom while she shopped lol. We also had an Acme, which those two stores were the biggest at the time. There are now Weis Market and Giant Grocery Store. Of course, there is Walmart. Aldi's is a discount grocery store where my wife and I live here in PA. There's also Trader Joe's.
I'm also from Lewistown, PA but moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1956 with my parents. I actually worked at A & P when I was 16. Just got back from family reunion in Lewistown last week.
A memorable walk down the grocery isle, and down memory lane! Thanks so much for your nostalgic and informative presentations. It's great to know of other names of stores I've never heard of👍✌️
A&P, Big Bear, Marsh's, Delchamps, Jitney Jungle. Those are the ones I have patronized down the years in this video. I now work as a contractor employee in the offices of a large supermarket chain. I know how hard it is to keep a profitable grocery business going. The margins are thin. Thanks for another look at some old friends. I knew what a jitney was in 1992 when I moved to Hattiesburg MS (it's slang for a nickel), but another episode in this series explained how the jungle got there (a newspaper typo for jingle). It is very interesting to see these.
I'm sitting here looking at pictures of old grocery stores from before I was born, in a country I've never been to. The older car styles were so much better than today.
Kash and Karry was doomed from the start in the Orlando Florida area, where Publix and Winn Dixie and to a lesser extent Piggly Wiggly were kings. Especially in East Orlando, we had Winn Dixie and Publix a short drive from our house, along with J.M. Fields dept and Zayre dept stores.
Some Of My Earliest Memories Are Going To The A&P With My Dad Back In The '60's. I Remember The Produce Lady Marking The Bag With A Crayon & Grinding The Coffee. Thank You.
We had a Mark-N-Pak store that had these little black grease markers...you would put the price on the can or box yourself. Honor system i guess. This was in the 1970's when i shopped with my mom...first time i discovered Freshen Up gum!! The Mark-N-Pak became a Price Chopper in the 80's then in the 90's a Mexican grocery/meat market. Anyone remember Van De Kamp's bakeries? 🥰
That is very interesting to think about them having an honor system like that. Nothing like that would work now. Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us.
It is so sad that all these grocery stores were either bought out (in order to destroy the competition by other stores) or had to go out of business because of being pressured out of business by competitors. When I grew up, the town I went to had Jitney jungle, Save-A-Lot, Foodland, Big Star, Piggly Wiggly, and Food World. All that changed by the late 90's. Most of those have went out of business. Now, all that's left is Big Star and a store called AIG. Since there's no competition, besides, Walmart Supercenter, they are both pretty high on their prices. I hate that those are the only choices we have around here. Now, town always feels so crowded (since our population has quadrupled or more within the last 5 years by thousands of immigrants) and there are less places to go. It's so sad that so many retailers of all kinds and restaurants have, or are going out of business now. I've been hearing that it's going to get much worse pretty soon. What are people going to do? I just wish there were more business-minded people popping-up, who know how to run stores and do right by their employees and the public, instead of being so greedy. Also, America needs to fix its own supply chain issues by getting back to making its own products. Somebody has got to wake up sooner or later, I hope.
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. It is sad to see some of these old stores go and especially so on one's that have been around awhile!
I agree with your sentiment. Kroger and Albertson's bought up a TON of the stores we and our folks grew up with. Fry's, Ralph's, King Sooper, Tom Thumb, Jewel-Osco, etc. If their merger is approved, it'll mean that the first and second-largest chains merged into one, putting even more small stores and suppliers out of business. Then if people want decent wages and benefits or variety? They close up shop to avoid unionizing and people are left in a food desert. It's already happening and it's sad. Some parts of the large town next to my suburb have no fresh food stores within miles and many don't have transportation. I moved back to my hometown, which still has a 2-store indie "chain" for groceries and I appreciate they're still in business after all these years. I hope they can stay open. America won't fix its issues as long as the end goal is shareholder profit only. There has to be a balance and it's sad.
I have some fond memories of Grand Union. There used to be one in a town I used to live, until it was taken over by CVS. 😠 I remember residents of the town had tried boycotting it, and I likely would have too if I had been older. It was the only actual grocery store in the town. After it closed, some like my family were forced to go to a grocery store in a nearby town that was more costly. 🤦♀️
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of Grand Union. Was that store small or was the CVS just big? They seem like they would be two different sizes.
@@RhettyforHistory The store was average size, I think. Wasn't the biggest, but not small. When Grand Union left ); CVS took over the building, which is unfortunate still there and operating. /:

When ever I hear of Winn Dixie I always think of the parking lot scene in Fried Green Tomatos with Kathy Bates.
Growing up in Detroit, we had Farmer Jacks, Wrigleys, Chathams and Great Scott stores, all of which are gone now.
Thank you for watching and mentioning a few more for us to remember Rick!
Grew up on Long Island. We had Hills, A&P, Bohak (sp?), Pathmark, King Kullen and Waldbaums (I was a cashier there)!
A&P. I remember my mother getting the stamps and filling up the cards to redeem for household items. Every time I went with she’d buy me a pack of Fruit Stripe gum. 😂 2 chews and that stuff as done.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories Slamgod!
WOW!!! I REMEMBER THAT FRUIT STRIPE GUM, YOU DAMM RIGHT TWO CHEWS THAT GUM COMPLETELY DONE! MAN I LOVE GROWING UP AS A KID IN THE 80’s.LOL😂😂
Green stamps? Or was that just a Publix thing?
@@kristinwood8884 Yep! It was a green stamp thing. A&P near me closed in the very early 80's. I have not seen anything the likes of green stamps since. Jewel and Dominick's had promotions along the same lines, but nothing like the A&P
@@Slamgod in Sussex, NJ the main grocery store forever was A&P, up until 2002, it may still be there.
I'm from a town in FL Vero Beach, that has at least 6 Publixs.
I recently moved to upstate NY, Wegmans is as close as I will get to Publix.😔
(Except for vacations)
A&P reminds me of Winn Dixie, Kroger, now in NY Tops.
Thank you for watching and telling us about some others you had in the Detroit area Randy!
I remember all those except Foodland.
@@dannydaw59 Foodland had the best fried chicken. You could buy the family bucket cheaper than KFC, and it was better quality.
I remember as a kid growing up outside of Buffalo, NY and the local groceries were Bells and Super Duper.
Go Bills!
Thank you for watching and sharing a couple more for us to remember JayKayZed!
I also remember the Bells store in Lewiston NY. I recall that there were Super Duper markets as well, but I don’t recall the locations.
My favorites? Piggly Wiggly; IGA; A & P Tea.
Smith’s has seemed to utterly disappear. Other stores 🏬 have merged into other companies. Montgomery Ward’s, Lamont’s, Carr’s 🚗, Radio Shack 📻 and Sears, have utterly died. Your friend, Jeff.
A lot have disappeared. Thank you for watching Jeff!
it's great looking at all the good old days grocery stores, in addition I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the cars...boy does that take me back...great video...thank you..
Growing up in the Detroit area, my mom shopped at Great Scott, Packer & Farmer Jacks. Great memories!
Thank you for watching and sharing some your mom went to Brian!
here in Peoria Illinois, we miss our A&P and our Eagle grocery stores so much... we were just talking about them, not more than 3 days ago. Thank you for this video!!!
You're welcome and thank you for watching Conservative Hippie!
I miss how buildings used to look all different and had interesting architecture.
I once watched a TH-cam video about a man [whose hobby was visiting dead malls and abandoned buildings] looking outside a long abandoned Kohl's [grocery]. I was in awe of the overall architecture but became sad when the man peeked inside with his camera
They sure did and I miss that too. Thank you for watching Foxy Lovelace!
That's called character, for lack of a more catchy term
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of your family and A&P Pink salt!
I remember when may whole paycheck was $100 😆
I was a Dominick’s Truck Driver on the Extra board West Suburban NorthLake Illinois is Where their Trucking & Warehouse was domiciled
Only one I've heard of is A&P. We had a few in Pittsburgh that didn't last. My dad shopped at a local ma and pop grocery store mostly so I don't remember too many others. We did have a Kroger's, but it wasn't very close and they're still around.
Thank you for watching and telling us about some of the stores in your area Joe!
Born in 1982, grew up in RI, the defunct grocery stores I remember are Almacs, Ro Jack's and A&P.
Haha!
Fascinating!
Louis Stores , too
Back in the early eighties there was a store called Skag's Alpha Beta in College Station Texas.
Thank you for watching Lauren!
Dolton had an Eagle
Grand Union is back! Now that Tops and Price Chopper combined. They had to diversify their portfolio to not monopolize their own region
Wow I can't get over the architecture of some of these grocery stores from the 50-60's....I would love to live in an old Kohl's grocery store!
Thank you for watching Leslie!
Mid century is the best architecture. Today’s architecture is so depressing, cold, sterile. I absolutely hate it.
When did Dominick's close? I lived in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs from 2005 to 2009, and they were still alive and well.
Long Island, NY has lost a ton of grocery stores over the years. I believe now it's down to only Shop-Rite and Stop N Shop (there's probably a Whole Foods somewhere as well). I never in my life thought I'd see Pathmark go down but it did.
Thank you for watching and telling us a little more about the Long Island area!
I used to live on Long Island and I now live in Houston. I got upset when I heard about PathMark and Waldbaum’s closing down. I used to go grocery shopping every weekend with my mom.
Nassau county here, experiencing childhood memories of Bohack and AnP.
I remember A&P growing up. When PathMark went I was surprised.
I grew up in Houston, so glad you included Weingarten's. The one at Gulfgate Mall was the first place ever I remember seeing scanners, was about 1976.
Thank you for watching and sharing a little more about them Al.
Yep. Plus Food Giant in Sharpstown.
Remember weingartens from the fifties
I grew up in Northern California, our family always shopped at Safeway!! Vons in Southern California, both are still going today 👍
Do u remember the big yellow chicken at the front that would lay an egg w a gift for a quarter??😁💖❤ our Pa store had it!!
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of A&P!
I just started watching, and I'm already looking forward to the part about Red Owl grocery stores!

❤️Jodie 🇦🇺

@@waynek3366 We do have Target and Kmart which i heard you also have over there.
Kmart here has turned into like a $2.00 store, everything is cheap and of poor quality.

Hinky Dinky… Seriously! I can’t stop laughing! Yet Piggly Wiggly survives.
We no longer have Marsh, Thiftway or Piggly Wiggly in my area.
Aldi still opens another checkout line if there are more than a few people waiting, but that's the only store I've been to where it happens consistently.

A&P had a few locations in my town.

-- one that was built on farmlands. The building grew by New York-based IGA in the 1990s. It's currently owned by local pharmacist as a pharmaceutical store/grocery store/delicatessen. C&S Grocers does supply some items to this store.
You'll still see A&P bags around.

I don't.

Good news. There is still a Piggly Wiggly in Alabama. And I was able to order a t shirt lol. Had to have it.
Alpha Beta was our family grocery shopping spot when I was a kid in the 70s. I can still remember the basic store lay out.
