15 years driving big rig here. My advice for anyone who is looking for a truck to buy for first time. Series 60 and cat engines are the best. If you are not in california buy those without def. But if you are in california then there's not much choice. Never buy cat motor if that truck has def system because it gonna keep blowing turbo.
Cat engine with Def, they quit making truck engines before Def, it was egr that ended them. Max force were Cat blocks at beginning only, then blocks came from Europe. Tell me which Cat eng had Def in trucks.
Cat with def? That just shows ur 15 years is bullshit.. bye
I'd go another step and say skip the dpf only trucks as well. Honestly, I'd take the def ones before the dpf only rigs, but skipping both is best if possible. And yeah, no true highway cat had def. But a guy should still skip the dpf cats.
I'd even add the N14 Cummins as a good buy, but they're getting up there in age.
@@johac7637the dpf in the cat was worse reliability wise (mostly to the ard head) than the egr. But yeah, it all wasn't good.
@@tangydiesel1886 so again, which Hiway trucks had DPF as none had EGR, in the Cat engine option, construction machinery is a different storyline, as as the EPA tiers rose so did emissions treatment, but Cat went out of On Hiway engines as they wouldn't go with EGR.
I worked in a non-diesel shop at one point, and the one thing I couldn't understand is why some mechanics would be so guarded and not want customers to know their own vehicles, having basic knowledge about your car or truck makes it easier to point a good mechanic or technician in the right direction and save you both time. I appreciate channels like yours for being informative on things like this!
Because those are scam artists, they'd rather you come back and spend more money but like with every profession, there's good and bad ppl in them, Adam here is definitely a good one for helping out ppl. What the bad ones don't understand is that they lose their customers by their shady tactics which makes the bad ones losing more money in the long run because the customer felt robbed and looked somewhere else to take their cars. Same thing with doctors, I never went back to a doctor that I felt he didn't put any effort into helping us get better while I kept going back and recommended doctors that seem genuine in helping their patients.

Im having that crankcase filter problem right now thank you for pointing that out mine started leaking oil when i was driving up a steep hill
746500 miles on my 2015 and the only small leak I had was oil pan gasket. Other than that it never leaked. All other OO in our company are driving Pete's with ISX's. All around the same milage. Mine gets better mpg while there's a little more powerful. We've all done similar maintenance to it, but Cummins is waay more expensive to fix. Turbo, injectors, fuel pump, you name it. Almost double the price of Detroit parts and they don't work particularly longer or better than Detroit. I'll stick to my dd15.

@@chuasmare22, not all DD15s are bad engines. There are some good ones and bad ones across all platforms.

We had the low oil pressure problem on a DD13 in a Fire Truck. Unfortunately we didn't catch it in time and it cost us $50,000 for a complete engine replacement. There is a recall on this problem but our truck was not included in the recall even though it was the exact same issue! Engine had less than 40,000 miles on it! We also had a problem with the oil cooler causing oil and coolant to mix. These Detroit DD13'S (mostly a rebadged Mercedes engine) seem to be way too fragile for Emergency vehicles. We have had numerous other problems with them as well but I don't have all day to list them all!
Also, because our engines were not part of the recall, we received NO notification of the low oil pressure issue and Detroit Diesel flatly refused to cover any part of it!

Good video, as soon as I saw your vid I noticed my crankcase filter was wicking. But otherwise from that the only problem I had was the injector line gaskets

Very informative videos. Question... What would lead to inconsistent oil levels on dipstick? I have 2(2014 DD15) trucks in my fleet starting to show low levels when i know they are not. Ex. checks ok in yard after sitting overnight on a pitch to passenger side. Pull into shop on level ground, let sit for 15 minutes after warm up and shows below MIN. Never use to do this before. Trucks are approaching 600k and 2 of the 4 are doing this.

Hello my mechanic recommends I use Lucas oil stabilizer with each oil change. Oil we use is 15w40 . He Said it will give you more life out of your engine just brought two Cascades 2012. What do you think?

One of the biggest issues i encounter are with the Oil Pick Up Tube. Unfortunately Detroit thought it would be a smart idea to make it with plastic. Over time the heat/vibration can cause the pick up tubes to crack and you will lose all oil pressure. This can and almost always happens while you're driving and causes engine failure. DD13/15/16 will all fail if they run 7 - 10 seconds without oil pressure. SO if that pick up tube breaks, by the time that engine stops spinning you will need a whole rebuild or a whole new engine.
Need some advice I have a 2019 Friegjtliner Cascadia new body style my driver side low beam headlamps keeps flickering sometimes when driving over bumps is it the headlamp module that's the problem or is usually the headlamp and can I also switch the driver side headlamp module to the passenger side to check if it is the headlamp module that's the problem that I need to change out?

How are the eaton fuller 10 speed transmissions on the dd15? I find on mine there is no creep mode. Don't know if it is designed like that. Needs 800rpm b4 it starts to move. Any help would be appreciated

Seems the problems you were describing were relevant to you around 500k miles. For the title of the video I'd definitely say it's anything to do with their after treatment specifically nox efficiency codes. Either the sensor or upstream management throughout the entire life of the truck. I can say for sure the company I work for which is nation wide and the largest fleet in the USA, after treatment is by far the biggest problem. Not on volvo or hino. Just Freightliner with the inventor of after treatment, cummins.

My 2013 Cascadia DD13 started shaking/jerking while driving. When I pulled over and checked, there was a hose loose. I put it back on, tightened the ring on it and it still shakes, like it’s running hard - especially when it gets to 65 or trying to go over a hill. Driving at 50 now. It still shakes, but not as bad. I’m trying to make it home to Miami. I’m in Georgia now. What could it be? Check engine light is on. Truck has 470k miles.

I am truck shopping and looking at a and BE 4000 2007 pre-death 12.8 , 3.42 Gears with a 10 speed Auto shift using it for hot shot work so won’t be pulling real heavy I would greatly appreciate any input do you have on the set up

I got a 2015 freighter cascadia with a DD15 that has been loosing power loaded up hill its slows so bad it feels like am crawling. The speedometer drops to 0 but all other gauges are fine.. once unloaded & you turn it off for 15 min or so once you start it it works just fine up hill & the speedometer works. Been to 2 shops spent 2 k & still doing the same thing. Any advice for that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ,please I have issues with 2015 D13 with dpf ahi fuel pressure not sending to the 7th injector ,the hydrocarbon module is new,air regulator new,dpf differential pressure reads 0.07 psi ,the dpf and doc inspected clean and dry .soot level reset to 19 percent ,inspected ahi fuel pressure connector 5v,ground,and signal also check those wires to engine ecm ,start parked regen then the code come back and not getting fuel to 7th injector ,also clean up fuel line supply and delivery,I’m not sure if this unit need a software up to date. Thanks for your advise

Hey guys, I have a 2014 Freightliner DD15.. Currently dealing with three codes.. 1. SPN 636 fmi 2 related to cam and crankshaft sensor sync... 2 SPN 3216 fmi 2 inlet nox sensor... SPN 3251 DPF Pressure High.. I've had the filters removed and cleaned three times in the last 2 months... SPN 3251 normally goes away after reinstall and doing a forced regen.. My question is could the reason the filters keep getting clogged be because of the NOX Sensor failure and replacing the Inlet NOX Sensor will prevent frequent need to pull DPF filters and clean or if still have SPN 636 related to Camshaft still keep the aftertreatment system from doing passive regen as the truck goes down the road? Truck normally does 400 - 500 miles/day.

Brandon Nourse thanks for watching. You would need to check base timing on engine to ensure engine is properly timed for cam & crankshaft sensor sync fault. Also a low temp regen would verify if Nox sensors are drifting apart. If Nox sensor are reading good and you are still getting frequent regen request than the engine may be producing too much soot which could be related to timing fault. I have a problem with a fallen liner, coolant goes right to the oil pan. Will getting the liners and all the parts and gaskets replaced in the kit cover the entire job of my problem or do you think I will need a complete rebuild?

Hey i got a 2011 freightliner cascadia it lost oil pressure started smoking sending oil down the passenger side and dump the antifreeze in oil pan got it tow in it seem to been the oil cooler pull it off had some bad gaskets change them and cleaned it up put back together same thing happened do u think its a cracked cylinder?? Please let me know what u think?

I have a 2009 western star with a dd15. I have had three shops look at it and they cannot get it started. The engine cranks over and everything checks out but it just won't start. Can you guys help?
