  • Hi Everyone. So recently bought a sony fx30 in a bid to shrink down all my camera gear. I hate having too many cams and was looking for a cam that can do it all to try and simplify my work.

    When I heard about the FX30 I knew a lot of people were going to move from the pocket 4K/6K. It’s pretty much what folks were asking for. I’m not at all interested in Sony beyond the Venice, but I can give roses where they are due. All I really care about is you being happy and doing your thing. And it sounds like you are!!!

      For real, us Blackmagic users are comfortable with crop sensors and we usually buy cams around the fx30 price so I agree with your thoughts.

    I picked up my FX30 a few weeks ago. I'm already shooting a web series with it. It really is an excellent camera. I, too, used to have the BMPCC4K. But, the FX30 is really a great choice.

      First impressions, it’s a big camera compared to my a6400. I like my kit small for travelling.
      Although I haven’t really had a chance to use it properly, I am having issues importing clips/images to Lightroom and FCPX. I think my mac is too old to recognise the codecs. I think it’ll be a good hybrid camera once I’ve sorted the above issues out.

    I almost bought the fx30, but I decided to make my main camera the Panasonic s5, and I keep my Sony a6400 around when I need extra reach, or if I need critical auto focus for some reason, which is rare for me, I use manual focus most of the time. But I'm sure the fx30 is an incredible camera. Your footage looks really awesome. Thanks for sharing

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I understand why. The S5 is great for so many scenarios and like you I still manual focus for most work so it's a no brainer.

    Yes i‘m still happy with my GH5s. But only two things i need to upgrade.
    1) shooting bigger than 4k, so i could render in 4k and record at 5.7 or 6k. What a GH6 can deliver perfectly with open gate.
    2) a real good autofocus for following people in gimbal shots. That will the FX30 the best candidate for.
    So if no manufacturer will offer both, i do have to make my decision in wich one i will invest.
    Both is no solution for different cfexpress formats, cards, card readers and so on.
    Thanks for your video. It will quit help me to get a look on to the FX30 from a BM switcher😂

    That intro isamazing! The light in that park (when you said it was a local park in London I was like, what?) looks so, so good. Loved the shots in the parking garage, too. Really, really nice. I wonder if Sigma will ever update the 18-35 for mirrorless systems?

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Phillip, yeah just one of our parks 😁
      I really hope sigma will do an e-mount version of the 18-35. It works well with the Mc11 adapter but it's far too noisy for AF.

    • @jonathanfarber
      @jonathanfarber 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same here, the AF noise with the 18-35 is almost comical. I've been shooting on those lenses with my C70's and the constant grinding is irritating, ok for pure B-roll scenes but on the FX30 it seems to be grinding away all the time. Annoyingly, the MC11 will not work with any EF glass in AF so... I have ordered an alternative AF EF-E-mount adaptor so will report in when it lands from the Amazon gods. @@Altcine

    There is a difference between the image out of a full frame sensor and a cropped sensor. At its simplest the full frame sensor would make people the dominant presence in the frame. But, congratulations on your purchase. Another, great choice is the A7iv. The biggest let down is that the Fx30 don't have raw still image capability. That's Sony's cripple handle to save the A7iv.

    • @thomasfransson
      @thomasfransson ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's RAW stills on the FX30

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  ปีที่แล้ว

      Full frame definitely looks nice but you can still isolate subjects with apsc. Not that I do too often and never really did it on S5 as I kinda hated that super shallow dof.
      I've been so impressed with the fx30...it's really changed a lot for me.

    $2300 in Canada WITHOUT the xlr adapter….however the fx3 is 5 grand, so 2300 is quite a steal 😂 I’d love to go full frame but I’m pretty invested in the apsc glass. I really want an fx30 to replace my a6100

    • @Altcine
      @Altcine  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gosh, you guys have it bad too. Apsc is fine too, no problems if you a decent range of focal lengths.
      I'd definitely get a speedbooster though for manual focus and that extra stop of light. So many metabones for sale in UK for cheap at the moment so I'm sure you'll find them too.

  • @Mamotreco
    @Mamotreco ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Someone prob already mentioned it but US prices don’t include tax. You then have to add the tax rate which depends on which state it’s being purchased in. So the price difference ends up being much less than what it seems at first glance.

    oh and I got the 15mm f1.4 G, the autofocus is STUPID FAST, and the Sigma 18-35mm works as native with the MC11 adapter in terms of autofocus, I'm a 99% manual focus shooter but the FX30 with that AF makes it so easy, its a nice feeling let me tell you ...

    Investing on bmpcc4k was one of my major mistake of a life
    - worst battery
    - ir filters get corrosion after 1-2 year
    -very limited numbers of service centres
    - heavy and not portable
    - m4/3 too small sensor for low light
    - worst IR pollution noise
    - speedbooster kills the sharpness of footages if u want to use ef mount lenses
    Do not recommend black magic conpany to anyone who is starting his career with first cinema camera , sony are portable good support , alot ppl use you may have easy support from the alot of ppl and good service centres .
    The camera should be portable to use and something fast , after all u need a camera that makes ur work done , what u gonna do with 12bit footage if the camera is too headache to handle

    I have to agree here too, as a first time Sony owner too, I love my FX30, this is from another Sony Hater, I've used plenty Sony cameras, basically all the APSC line, some FF like the A7III. A7SIII (this one was pretty good but not enough) but the FX30 is different, just the layout itself, its better than the A7SIII for a video shooter and the FX3 is the same too, I own the GH6 and it is superior in many ways (most actually) but... the FX30 is simple, and delivers amazing footage without much effort, I really really like it, great video man.

    The FX30 is just another mirrorless with some optimization for video. It has truly terrible rolling shutter issues and that pretty much leaves it well behind some better choices. For not a lot more money you can pick up a used Sony FS5 MKII, which will outshoot the FX30 all day. Add the Atomos recorder to the FS5 and you now have 12 bit color prores RAW and a sensor with fast enough readout to minimize the rolling shutter problems. Better way to go!

I've owned 2 atomos ninja but always sold them...mainly because I'm a resolve user and ProRes raw files are too big.
      The only time rolling shutter has been a problem for me is in weddings when people use flash but other than that it doesn't really affect my work. I'm just happy I have a small cam thats very capable.

      @@Altcine Understood and for low end content makers, an FX30 is fine. But for filmmakers, it's a C level cam at best or even a crash cam. When doing simple pick-ups for a short film project, our DP absolutely would use a FX30. We did use the F55 MK II, FX6 and FS6. Interesting. I have the BMPCC4K and just got in a Metabones 0.64x Nikon F to MFT BMPCC4K version. I will let you know what I think of it vs my Viltrox 0.71x budget booster. I was just looking at maybe the full frame Sony FX3, not the FX30.. same idea, just full frame for a series of projects of mine. For my projects, needs to be a solid raw for grading. I used to print color images (enlargers and paper chemicals not printer) from negative and positives. I'm fast and fairly good so working with Davinci Resolve BRAW wasn't intimidating, it was almost like coming home. That being said what I'm shooting is vintage full frame lenses or recreations (tomography, Lensbaby etc) and now looking at Meyer-Optik Gorlitz recreations..... they look impressive though I have yet to see one in person.
    Anyway going a question. with your new Sony do you do any external RAW recording? If so how does it grade for you? I think depending upon recorder you can go ProRes RAW or BRAW?
