WOODSMAN ELITE 125 gr Broadhead Test

  • This is a test of the WOODSMAN ELITE 3 Blade Fixed broadhead.
    I'm using a Bowtech SR6 at 72# & 27" draw length and Bishop FOC King Arrows, 460 grs and Bishop FAD Eliminator Arrows for the concrete test.
    I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide... or @Innovative Outdoorsman The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel. They make an incredible sharpener for heads of this design, the Stay Sharp Guide "344." Check out their website or TH-cam Channel for demonstrations of how to use it.
    In case you're not familiar with my new test protocol, here is what I'm doing now:
    1. Flight Test--1 field point & 2 broadheads out my by Bowtech SR6 at 40 yds, to see how well they group together.
    2. Sharpness Test: I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention.
    What are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
    A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    3. Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
    10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.
    4. Penetration Test 1: one shot into a combined medium of 2/3" of rubber mat, 1/2" MDF and Clear Ballistics FBI Grade Gel. This is to roughly simulate the tissue of an animal--hide, bone and muscle/fat.
    5. Penetration Test 2: one shot into layers of cardboard.
    6. Durability Test: For fixed blade heads, I take up to 5 shots into .22 ga steel plate and then evaluate the damage to the head. This is a good test to see the overall durability of the blades, as well as their connection to the ferrule. For mechanical heads, I take up to 5 shots into 1/2" MDF and then evaluate the damage to the head.
    7. Concrete Test. This is a zero penetration test, which is a good test of the overall structural integrity of a head.
    NOTE: Of course I understand we don't hunt steel plates and concrete, but all of these tests simply provide DATA POINTS for you to use in determining which broadhead is best for your hunting purposes. A well placed shot with pretty much any broadhead will get the job done most of the time. But why not prepare for the worst and buy the best you can?
    If one head can hold up to multiple shots in steel & concrete-and another cannot--all other things equal, wouldn't you want to use the head that can withstand the steel and concrete? And after taking hundreds of animals with my bow, I've seen some bone shots cause more damage to a broadhead than even a cinder block.
    The goal for all of us is to stack the odds in our favor as much as possible, and select a broadhead that is as lethal as possible for our bow/arrow set up and for the animal we are hunting.
    At the end of each of my broadhead tests, you will find a score sheet listing all the results of the testing, so you can compare heads based on what factors matter to you the most. I also have an overall LUSK GRADE that is an evaluation of how the head performed in all the tests combined.

    Thanks, John! I was wondering about those heads. Of course I’m old enough to remember when those were introduced and dubbed the Wensel Woodsman, designed as I recall, in collaboration with Gene and Barry Wensel. Of course the originals were welded, not machined from a single piece of steel. I still actually have a few of those original 125 grain heads.

      I usually share my top 5 at the end of each year, in the final vid of the year. I did that in 2020 in a vid called, "Broadhead Scoring Summary 2020" or something like that. Hard to say a top 3 cause some heads are designed for a certain animal and others are designed for another one. But in general, I'd say my top Fixed: Exodus, Tooth of the Arrow, Iron Will, Bishop. Hybrids: Grim Reaper Micro Hybrid, Jekyll & Hyde, DK4, Afflictor. Mechs: Sevr 1.5, Sevr 2.0/Robusto, Trypan NC.

    Fairly well? That was incredible! Even a moose shoulder is more giving than a brick. And a 1 inch head is plenty, remember the man in Africa who studies 1000 animals killed and the lung shot animals all died the same when hit with 7/8 head up to 2 inches. That’s why hunters need to take closer archery shots and hit where they are aiming! This looks like an excellent bear and deer head. Great video Pastor

      ...incredible 😀? ....at the time Ashby did the main work for his studies it might have been incredible - in the meanwhile there are so many other BH on the market that outperforms this older "3 MA" design wrt durability, penetration, versatility, long distance accuracy, and price - so IMO "fairly well" for a BH that cost US$ 22 with pretty average results is rather a kindly judgment ... if even a mechanical for US$ 15 outperforms this BH in the concrete test it can't be so good.....and Ashby focused on big game, shot from short distances ...most test data entailed shots not further than 20 yd - nothing wrong with this, but some hunters want a setup (including BH) that allows them to make a kill over 30 ...40 yd and even further...

    I know you have been doing the plastic bag drain test. To make it more realistic to an animal. A rubber bag filled with a very light oil would potentially act more like hide and have more of a blood like consistency.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tried every kind of bag type test I can think of and none of them are consistent. I've shot the same head at the same spot and gotten totally different results. The position of the blades makes a significant difference in how quickly the bag drains...as does whether the flap goes inward or outward. I dropped the tests for that reason. Don't trust anything you see in a drainage test.

    Just a question why do you use concrete ? Why not use bone like shoulder bone ? If a head makes it through bone that is the true test. Concrete is nothing like anything we shoot into. I'm just asking ,it's your test you do what you want but I'm just wondering

      ...if the arrow makes it through the game, or if you miss (happens), it might hit a rock so it is actually a pretty real world scenario, and it is good to know whether the BH will be reusable or not...

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment Mike. I've explained it many times, but I know you can't watch all the vids. Bone is not uniform; it varies in geometry and density. I do use Elk Scapula in some testing vids, but the goal of my testing is to provide data points to reveal the limits of what a broadhead can and cannot do. The durability tests must be completely uniform or they have no comparative value. I want to provide comparative value so you can see how one head performs versus another one, under the exact same conditions.

    • @mikenutto396
      @mikenutto396 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures I understand , first to the rock comment. I've hit plenty of rocks in my day with a broad head. At any point once something like that happened that broad head to me is done! Due to an ethical standpoint. Unless it's completely visible that nothing happened to that head. And it's very rare. I've seen most of these tests where you hit something also with the concrete. In almost every one of those tests those heads are done. It's very rare that you have one that has not had some type of edge bent over tip destroyed something of that nature. And I do understand you're trying to show the durability of the heads. I think the metal test proves that more than anything. You shoot through the metal I've seen you roll edges I've seen stuff actually survive that quite well. I just don't understand shooting it into a cinder block because there's nothing that we're trying to shoot that's a cinder block. Or even equivalent to that. That's just my thought process these are your videos you can do what you want I just was wondering why because I don't see the need for it myself.
      there's an awful lot that I see in archery that isn't necessary or being downplayed and not talked about. Tuning the bow tuning your arrows getting your arrows to shoot with a broad head correctly. Those are really the things that need to be discussed. Everyone's arguing about heavy arrow light arrow. There are many new archers that are out there, and a lot of this stuff I think confuses them. I know I've gone through so many steps to get where I'm at now and I've been bow hunting for close to 30 years. I'm still learning! There's a awful lot to this. I was just wondering about the idea behind your cinder block test. That's pretty much it

  • @WM-jy9dz
    @WM-jy9dz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    just another example (like so many others here) showing that Ashby's postulate of an BH with an MA of 3 and higher as the best option is flawed: the higher MA (compared to other better performing BHs) does not increase penetration, but compromises the structural integrity as it weakens the tip due to the longer leverage.
    Lots of examples here where much shorter 3-blades (with even a bigger cutting diameter!) with less MA achieved better penetration and performed much better in the concrete test, even if they had a much lower hardness (which makes them usually cheaper compared to BHs with higher hardness).

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures

      Yeah, at least in the penetration test mediums I'm using. Completely agree.

    • @mikekupetsky6879
      @mikekupetsky6879 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ashbys 3:1 ratio works. This head is not 3:1. The part your forgetting is structural integrity. It's #1 on his list. If you use a head that's design properly 3:1 mechanical advantage is absolutely better penetrating than anything else but you need to have a head that can withstand impact The Woodsman is a terrible example. If you want a good example look at a tuffhead Meathead

      @LuskArcheryAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it does serve a purpose. It's a good indication of the structural integrity of a head. Is it necessary for hunting? Not in most situations. However, if one head can handle such an impact and another cannot, all other things equal, wouldn't you want the head that can handle it? The goal of the tests is to reveal the outer limits of what a broadhead can withstand. You as the viewer can decide whether those data points matter to you or not. Clearly, the zero penetration test doesn't matter to you. So just don't worry about that data point. I say in each video: "Check out the score sheets and see how the head performed in the areas that matter to you the most."
