    This is great! I saw a similar method years ago where you use a plastic fabric and cut a window in it, and just place a new piece of sticky stabilizer in the window each time. But the glue stick works great! There are some little magnets called Sew Tites, that you can put around the edges instead of pins, as long as they are out of the stitching zone. They are handy.

    Lisa, I hope you get this message, don't know if YT sends you notes from an 11 mo video. Anyway ... I had watched this video when it came out and apparently it was lodged in my brain until today when I needed it! I was able to easily use this technique for 6 repetitive/identical hoopings/stitchouts! OMG, what a game changer!!!! I had always shied away from multiple/identicals because of, well, repetition. And all that stabilizer going to waste. This technique was so quick and easy! TY TY TY. Hope this finds you and your family well. Take care ((hugs)).

    Hi, this is Lin from South Wales in the UK. Thanks for the suggestions, I’d never used glue because I didn’t want to gum up my needles but putting it outside the outline is genius. Thank you so much for that tip. My suggestion is to buy a large tape dispenser that fits your roll of masking tape. A one off purchase. It is then easy to tear off pieces with one hand. Thanks again, Lin

    Love this idea and your voice and laugh is so soothing!! When you do an appliqué, do you always cut it down to the exact size? I always place it and trim it after the placement stitch. Your idea seems so much better. Can you explain a little more about the appliqué?

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you so much DeeDee :) Nope, I don't ALWAYS do it like this, sometimes like you I do the placement stitch and trim before continuing on. In some cases that is way faster! Because I am stitching out 84 of these anchors between 7 quilts, I went ahead and made a svg file for my Brother ScanNCut machine. It cuts them PERFECTLY and it only takes 2 minutes to cut out 2 anchors. Imagine the time it would take to carefully remove the extra fabric for 84 of them hehehee. If I'm doing a single applique here and there I do it the other way :)

      @@TheQuiltmakerHomestead I cut out my shapes with an Accuquilt Go. Then I get the emb. file, and stitch them down. I am also experimenting with taking a picture, scanning it with a wand scanner, importing it into my Cricut as and SVG file, and cutting it out. I do not have a Scan N Cut, but that sounds like a great idea!!!!

    I have been using what I call "stabilizer frames" since I purchased my embroidery machine. I have one for each hoop. I use them for most projects. I do not use them for FSL or lace). I made the frame from 2 layers of heavy pellon interfacing (like for making collars and cuff on clothing). The center hole I made by stitching out a basting frame the size of the max stitching area of my hoop plus 1/2". It can be used for any project. I simply use a square of stablizer 1" larger than stitch area pinned with satin pins to the stabilzer frame. I have been reusing the frames for 5 years now. Like you said, it really saves on stabilizer. And the interfacing is always taught and always centered in the frame.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ohhh, I like the idea of doubling up with the heavy pellon and creating a window that would accommodate everything! How smart. Thank you so much for passing along the information, I appreciate that so much!

  • @ellenhofer3343
    @ellenhofer3343 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    All large hoops tend to get loose in the stitching process. Some brands come with clips. I've used binder clips in the past.
    The stabilizer window is a great idea. I think I took a stabilizer (Floriani) class many years ago and they taught us this trick. Great $ saver.
    Why not just fold that fabric in half each way and mark the centers each way with your marker or by touching ths edges with an iron?

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carolina, thanks for watching! I thought the heavy duty stabilizer would be more sturdy and last longer if I made the window out of that, and I used the light weight stabilizer on my project because that's really all this quilt block needed in order to stabilize the fabric for the satin stitch :)

He died in 2002 and really would like to make a quilt in his memory. I have a Viking embroidery machine. I am 82 and thought I better get started, HA! Could you help me? I really would appreciate your help. I am fairly new on my IPad. Thank you for all the great shows.

      Hi Elsie......I would love to help! I will be releasing this quilt design once I complete these quilts and get past my "busy" season. In the pattern I will have the anchor that can be used to do applique. I only have the file digitized for a Bernina and not quite sure how to save it as a file that a Viking would recognize. So the pattern would be like my standard patterns with applique templates.

      It's a woven mesh that is sturdier than the plastic-like film so it doesn't tear out when you have lots of stitches. I use it for free-standing lace and am currently using it for round in-the-hoop placemats.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead

      when I was in the planning stages of this quilt, I digitized the anchor in my embroidery software (Embrilliance). In Embrilliance, it gives you the option to save a cutting file (svg) which is a file that my Brother ScanNCut 2 recognizes. So I ironed on some heatnbond lite to the back side of a piece of clothing, laid it on the cutting mat and the machine cuts them out perfectly for me :)

    What type of stabilizer do you recommend for embroidering a monogram, name, just on stabilizer not fabric. Hope this makes sense. Hope you can help me. I have used tear easy, wash away & both have torn during embroidering. Thank you in advance

      When using just stabilizer I use a heavy wash away. It is thicker than other wash aways. that could be the issue. Hope that helps

    Great video! Thanks for sharing your expertise! I've done stabilizer windows, but never thought of using masking tape around the exterior of the hoop to keep the stabilizer taut... great idea! (I've used pins and binder clips, but your way is MUCH faster!)

    I just want to know how much you charge. I did a custom memory quilt which included machine embroidery designs as well as photos. I included all the grown child's interests as a child in the embroidery. The client was pleased but not with the price of about $1200 for a Ca. king. I took apart all the clothes and even edited her old photos. I feel like I actually lost money on the deal and earned about 2.00 an hour. Some machine embroidered designs were upwards of 40,000 to 60,000 stitches.

      anytime I add embroidery there is an extra fee per item based on stitch count, and any photos that I edit and print and add will also be additional charges as well. Have you seen my quilt pricing video? In the description box of that video I offer a free PDF cheat sheat that may help come up with a price that works best for you...I'll post a link here just incase: th-cam.com/video/_GXNZTSFy8w/w-d-xo.html

    Also, I have floated a piece of stabilizer behind sticky stabilizer when making several towels but have never applied the glue. Do all forms of Elmer’s glue work? Do you just wash away after or doesn’t it stiffen the project?

    Ways to speed up the process:
    Measure your trimmed stabiliser and cut several lengths the same. I noticed you cut off several inches when you trimmed the edges which add up over a number of hoopings.
    If you have access to embroidery creation software make a crosshair embroidery file for your hoop, so that you don’t have to mark the centre by hand. I don’t have complete faith that where the centreline marks are on the hoop, are exactly the same as where the embroidery machine will stitch them, so I have created cross mark embroidery files for all my hoops. I used a basting running stitch length of 4mm so that the needle doesn’t weaken the stabiliser. The file stitches a maximum embroidery outline for the hoop and a centralised cross across the whole width and length of the hoop. I load this file first and then load the main embroidery file, making sure I match up the central alignment. It is then easy to hoop the stabiliser and use an unthreaded needle to stitch out the centre hoop placement guide. Once you have these central placement files you can use them with any other embroidery files to get exact placements.
    If I was doing an appliqué I would also stitch out the first appliqué placement line with the unthreaded needle, to create an outline for the glue stick application. That way you don’t need to print out a template or trace anything by hand.
    I use Floriani Applikay Wonder as the backing for appliqué pieces, as it has pressure sensitive glue on the back, so you don’t need to use an iron to stick the appliqué in place.
    Hope these suggestions help.

      Thanks for all of the suggestions! I am always eager to learn new techniques and tips!!! I really like the idea of stitching out the anchor first without thread so that I don't have to trace it, that's GREAT! Also, I'm going to look into the Floriani Applikay Wonder, as most of the time I am using a smaller hoop and the iron doesn't fit. I usually use my tiny little iron then, but I like the idea of using no iron at all :) Thank you so much!

    Thank you. I love how you teach. I am an embroidery novice so my question may seem elementary. I assume that your anchor is part of a design that you purchased and that it is for applique.

    This is brilliant! I use water soluble stabiliser a lot. Do you think this method would work with that? I know I'd have to be quick with the glue stick otherwise the stabiliser would start to dissolve.

      I'm not sure Maggie, I've never tried it with water soluble before so I can't say with certainty

    i need to ask a ? When I applique I do the 1st stitch, I think that is the placement stitch then put a piece of fabric down and do the stitch then take it off and cut around the applique. put it back down and do the last stitch. I have never seen an applique that is already cut to the design. where did u get them

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stephanie! I've done applique many times the exact way you explained as well, and that's a fabulous way to do it :) For the anchors on these quilts, I needed to do 84 of them on 5 different quilts, so I created an SVG in a program called Inkscape. Then I was able to import the SVG into my Brother ScanNCut and cut out all 84 anchors relatively quickly. I also use an embroidery software called Embrilliance, and that let me digitize the anchor design.

    OMGOSH I just priced the machine you are using.. WOW WOW WOW.. I COULD NOT afford to buy a machine from this company... But I realize you get what you pay for .. I guess if you are doing this for your business, then it's a good thing to invest so much money in a machine like this but it's not worth it if you are just doing it for a hobby.. Wow..

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mary :) I'm thinking my thoughts about the price are much like yours. If I didn't use this machine in my business, then I would have certainly looked at much lower options. Incorporating this machine into my business has helped justify the purchase and I have used it a LOT in my commissioned quilts so that makes a huge difference. You certainly could take the concept of this video however, and incorporate the technique no matter which machine you are using :)

      @@TheQuiltmakerHomestead well I am happy for you that you can have such a nice machine.. It is a beautiful machine... And if you can afford it ( whether or not you are sewing for your business), why not buy one.. If I could afford it, I would absolutely buy one … God bless you and your business..

    What percentage do you use to increase or decrease your applique fabric from the satin stitching stitching line?

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I know what you are asking here....and I think it depends on which program you are using to digitize the applique maybe???? I use Embrilliance to digitize and there is a video out there....I can't remember the title of it....however it shows you step by step how to digitize applique and how much to increase or decrease your applique shape.

    Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I also do memory quilts and Teddy Bears. I embroider the bottoms of the bears feet for my clients and this method will save me a lot of stabilizer and time! Although each bear foot is different, the size of the foot is always the same, this technique (without the applique process) will work perfectly . I'll be busy getting back on this previously daunting task tonight due to your helpful tips!

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead

      What are your issues with your machine? My Bernina is thread picky and often times the automatic thread cutter doesn't cut the thread, yet pulls it and bunches up my design. I'm always curious about other machines, the upsides and downsides so I can make an educated choice if I ever decide to purchase a different machine
