    I grew up drift fishing, caught my first steelhead that way on Dec 2nd, 1979. With a casting rod, I can release line as my gear travels downstream and extend my drift. Sometimes, I'll let it swing on towards the bank when i feel a steelhead will holding there. Sometimes I use a fixed weight of pencil lead, sometimes a sliding weight, and sometimes a slinky. Why drift fish in a world of floats, Brian? There are buckets and other features in a stream bottom that a suspended bait won't drop into. I can hit small pockets that I cant put a float into. I carry a float rod, too. I have holes that you simply can't drift fish, the bottom will eat all the gear out of your vest or whatever you use streamside. I fish a spot on the Sol Duc that my buddy refuses to fish anymore, which i call the "Money Hole.". His complaint? He hangs up every cast. Yet I fish that hole and hardly lose any gear. If you look at my set-up, I'm using lighter (thinner) line which gives me the ability to use much lighter weights than he can use. I drift faster than most anglers, as my goal is to match the current speed. Most of the time, I am in freespool mode, so I can let out line as needed to keep my gear GLIDING along, and I mend frequently, often cast further upstream to allow my lighter presentation enough time to reach the zone where I want it to. I slow down my gear in limited visibility or if the fish are stacked in a tight area, or if I am fishing in very heavy current situations. Bill Herzog published a book that is considered the drift fisherman's "bible" in 1994. Color Guide to Steelhead Drift Fishing. If you are serious about drift fishing, it's a must read. His Spoon
    Fishing for steelhead I highly recommend, especially if you want to catch the largest steelhead you've ever caught. Spinner Fishing for Steelhead by another living legend, Jim Bedford, is another every serious steelhead angler should have. Herzog also put out a another priceless tool, called tying Strong fishing knots. For 6 bucks at Amato publications, it is a bargain that could save you the fish of a lifetime. Hope this helps someone. Automagic, baby!

    I’ve been bobber doggin from the shore a ton this year and it’s honestly the best of both worlds for me hahaha. You can run a XL bobber dogger with a 1/4 oz weight and it still easily goes sideways and works great.

      I remember the first time I bobber dog. Before it had a name. I got criticized by “experts” that it wasn’t a natural drift.

    40+ year drift fisher here, for me it all depends on the river bottom, if its a gravel bottom Ill drift fish with bait or spoons, the slotty type rivers are more condicive to bobber fishing. Bobber fishing has become more popular simply because you will loose less gear, plain and simple! Also you will see "the bite" slot easier with a bobber system. Its all because time in the water = more fishing time.

    Something to consider is your position on the bank or boat needs to change to effectively cover the strike zone drift fishing vs float fishing it's easier to cover the water above and below your position and or basically v drift along with the boat while minimizing re-casting.

    • @AutomagicAdventures
      @AutomagicAdventures  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is an excellent point. You mentioned that one of many things I forgot about.

    Biggest difference is the presentation. Bobber is a parallel presentation that can stay in the strike zone the entire time vs drift fishing is parallel for only a short time then singing back to shore. As you stated drift fishing you get hung up more but get down better.

      Exactly! Bobber fishing is easier IMO. And it’s more visual.

    For me it all depends on the water, bottom characteristic, and water depth. Super deep water 15+ feet deep is seldom the best place to fish steelhead. They only move through that area not necessarily HOLD in that deep water like a salmon will.

      Seems like that’s probably pretty true. Sometimes I’ve had really good luck with larger steelhead, in bigger holding pools.

      @@AutomagicAdventures the swinging the drifting set up totally makes sense I've already snagged up doing that lol

    Also most newer fisherpersons, cannot tell the difference from bottom and bite.

      I think using the slinky is the most similar to the fish bite

    I struggle detecting a bite vs a rock or hangup on the bottom drifting a dicknite or whatever. So my question is how to know what is a fish vs bottom feature.

    • @AutomagicAdventures
      @AutomagicAdventures  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fish bite feels like scratching a fingernail on weak Velcro. IMO slinky material hitting rocks feels similar.
      Rolls of stick lead is a sharper tap on bottom rocks.

    • @BlackRifleSurvival
      @BlackRifleSurvival 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thats a good way to explain. I've got tons of velcro, no slinky weights but i do have a roll of cut to size 1/4" lead sticks. Ill give them a try and memorize bottom texture and if i get bit on that method. Caught a small trout on the dicknite but no coho when I was targeting them. Ended up twitching for them after a while. I grew up drift fish losing many set up in a day. But learning how to read water was the big thing. As far as bobber go it makes easier for beginners to detect a bite. Drift fishing is one way I can add to arsenal. I been bobber fishing for a long time and it works so what ever method you use try learn the most from it. Get out and go fishing 🐟🐟🐟🐟🎣🎣🎣
