Tom is so interesting to me. I can't imagine having the balls to be so braggadocious about himself while being so incompetent.
I'm a Search Marketing specialist of which a major part is understanding how people use language and the specific context in which they're using certain words when searching for things online as a way to help infer intent. A great example of this is the difference in intent between someone searching for "homes for sale" vs " houses for sale". Although they're semantically very similar, the intent of the searcher is very different in that that former is generally looking for a single family home whereas the latter is generally used by people looking for rental or revenue property. That all being said I wouldn't consider myself a linguist because the work is an extention of my marketing role. I feel like that's very similar to what Tom is talking about even if he won't come out and say it. It's like someone taking a Google Analytics course and calling yourself a data scientist, lol.
Last comment, because this is killing me. There may have been linguistics used in what Tom did, but he DIDN'T DO THE LINGUISTIC PART. He took what ACTUAL linguists had found, and applied it to market pizza. The linguistic portion of what was done, had NOTHING to do with Tom.
It’s bizarre. I work in marketing, I read papers by statisticians to help me with my work. That doesn’t make ME a statistician.
As someone who has spent an insane amount of time in universities, NO ONE has ever used Tom's shit in a class.

I recently watched that insane documentary Telemarketers and he 100% reminds me of the workers in the doc. Most are addicts, ex-cons etc and they mastered the art of bullsh*tting in order to make ppl donate money. It's amazing and Tom is exactly like them.

The operative word in his title is marketing and linguistic is just a modifier, much like digital marketing does not mean you study everything about the digital world.
