For me, the best aspect of Batman 1989 isn’t necessarily Batman or the story but the incredible art direction, tone, and Danny Elfman’s amazing soundtrack. Production designer Anton Furst created a Gothic Revival/Art Deco wonderland that felt like the definitive Gotham City. This design even inspired a storyline in the comics that same year, where a fan of architect Cyrus Pinkney, who designed the “Gotham Style,” blew up modern buildings to reveal the old Gothic structures beneath, transforming Gotham into something closer to the look of Tim Burton’s film. For me, it’s still the best depiction of Gotham City in live action. I love the timeless feel, as if Gotham is stuck between the 1930s and 1980s a perfect mix of old and new. This applies to Batman Returns (1991) as well a film I prefer over Batman '89. Batman: The Animated Series (1992) pulled inspiration from the Burton films but went for a more 1940s noir style with heavy Art Deco influences. Characters wore 1940s-inspired clothing, drove retro cars, blimps flew overhead, and Gotham had this cool, retro Art Deco vibe. Yet, it balanced modern technology like computers and voice recorders, blending the past and present seamlessly. It's the definitive Batman experience, Mask of the Phantasm (1993) is an amazing stand alone film set in this universe. In the present day, with the rise of the Nolan Trilogy, they "grounded" Batman, Gotham, and his rogues’ gallery. You’ll notice that Gotham looks less unique movies like The Dark Knight (2008), even though it’s still a great movie. The Batman (2022), without spoiling anything, is a great example of a grounded film that still gave Gotham City a unique Gothic personality, which is why it’s my second favorite live-action version of Gotham. Hopefully with James Gunn's more "fantastical" DC universe we'll get a Gotham City that's just straight up a Gothic wonderland with blimps flying overhead.

Love when he says the line I'm Batman. You should know that he's gonna be on Saturday night live tomorrow on Saturday with Billie Eilish. You don't wanna miss it. I hope you watch a second movie Batman🦇
Batman 89 was filmed in England. The "Gotham" city set cost approx £1.5 million to build on the backlot of Pinewood studios covering almost the entirety of it's 95 acre site
It was also built to stand, as the original plan was to film the sequels at Pinewood as well. But once Burton insisted on staying in LA for *Batman Returns,* those sets served no purpose anymore.
There are some liberties taken with the general mythos in this, but overall, it’s a great version of Batman. Watched it since I was a kid, love Nicholson’s Joker, truly the part he was meant to play. The Animated Series that this spawned is an even better take on the material, hope you check out a few episodes of that.
I watched this in theater when it came out when I was a kid, wow so long ago, my cousin is a total Keaton Batman fan, I always get her Collectables for her birthday and Xmas, my fav Batman, Joker and Batmobile 😎🤘
In the comic book adaptation of the movie, the money Joker's men were throwing on the crowd was fake. They had Joker's face on the bills, a callback to him saying he wanted his face on the one dollar bill.
Michael Keaton had to turn his whole torso in order to move his head because the Batman mask that he was wearing didn't allow him to do that. That was Jack's glove that was worn away by the chemical that he was dumped into and that made his skin turn white. If you enjoyed this one you will really enjoy Batman Returns. The Catwoman steals the movie.
You should react to the direct sequel- Batman Returns. It’s my most favorite Batman film and is also directed by Tim Burton and is way more Burton-esque
When you said what are those referring to the shoes I died laughing…honestly those are actually Jordan 6 sneakers turned to look like boots also you should check out the sequel Batman returns. You’ll definitely like that as well.
The 89 batsuit is hilarious! Keaton has to look around with his whole torso because the mask is built into the mantle and he can barely move his head 🤣🤣🤣
@@NiaMakiReacts He hated that suit--they changed it for Batman Returns, which is the only squeal from the 90s that's worth watching. Don't waste your time with the others. Tim Burton's vision was based around Frank Miller's Dark Knight series from the comics. When this first came out--people argued it should have been named the Joker because of Jack Nicholson's performance. And this did set the stage for later superhero movies.
The shoes batman is wearing is “Air Force ones” modified into boots…if you look closer you can tell😂 and the ones he wears in the sequel to this “batman returns”are “jordans”…Michael Keaton has said he still owns a pair of the air force’s he wore in this somewhere in his home
the reason why batman couldn't move his bat mask head on its own was because his bat suit n the head part mask was all one mold set n he had to move his body n head mask at the same time
Back when I was a kid, there were no hero movies like there are now, no amination....just chris reeves as superman, that's it. So they had to depend on the quality of the actor, Keaton slayed his role. Batman was HUGE back in the 90s because we finally had someone other than superman to celebrate. You should watch all the batman's and THEN watch the 2023 Flash movie because they bring old school batman back!!!!
As a 7-year-old, I didn't even know the character Batman before I saw this in theaters. All I knew at the time was Christopher Reeve's Superman. My mom and I were cruising through the mall and she stopped in front of the theaters and asked if I wanted to see Batman. I agreed after she explain it wasn't scary, and a fan was born that day. Shortly after, I saw the old Adam West Batman movie on VHS and from that point forward, I saw every Batman film opening weekend until Batman Begins.
Actually Bruce Wayne is the mask, and Batman is his real personality, Bruce Wayne died in that alley with his parents, and Batman was born from the trauma of child Bruce Wayne. In most cases in Batman, even when he's old and "retired" he still says he's Batman. Wonder Women's lasso of truth was used on him which forces you to tell he truth, she said who are you really! He replied, Batman.
After your star wars marathon, how about watching all the betman/batmen-movues from different directors? I think you might be surprised how different they are :) even though there is always batman, and reczrring but differently interoreted villains.
As I understand it, hair and fingernails are essentially made of the same stuff - biologically, there's not much difference between them. So since the chemicals turned his hair green, it affected his nails the same way, hence the 'nail polish'. Hope you go ahead with 'Batman Returns' - it's great.

Nice. I LOVE this movie. Top-10 all-time. Not a Tim Burton fan at all (not just because of who he is as a person, but his cinematic sensibilities as well) nor am I that big a Batman fan, but I *love* this movie. Something about it, everything about it, hits me *just right*. My friends and I quote it endlessly. I don't like "Returns"; not a bad movie, but it's not a Batman movie and, more importantly, not a movie I'm into (I think it's a Tim Burton movie, and Batman is kind of in it a little bit. I'm not mad at it, but as I said: not a big Burton fan). Batman & Robin is TERRIBLE. It's very few defenders will say "you don't like it because it's camp" but no, it's a terrible movie. Batman '66 is what Batman & Robin *wanted* to be. And failed. And Batman Forever? Well... the worst thing a movie can be isn't bad, it's boring; Batman Forever isn't boring. So... Batman '66 - hard recommend. It's the dumbest movie you'll ever see and you'll love it Batman '89 - [check] Batman Returns - not a fan, but if you want to watch it, of course watch it Batman Forever - it's not good, but it's weird, interesting... low-key banger soundtrack (not just Kiss From A Rose) Batman & Robin - hard pass
I've stolen this saying before and I'll steal it again, but if I could become a super hero I would become Batman. Then I'd quit being Batman and just be a rich guy! (Stolen from Michael Swaim)
The Joker's white skin is his actual skin and is now stuck with that look due to the chemicals, there have been several different origin stories with the Joker over the years. The movie cameout at a time when superhero movies where starting to be taken seriously as before this there was the campy 1960's TV series of "Batman" starring Adam West who was the only Batman actor at the time, Michael Keaton was the first "serious" Batman. There was no such thing as the big DC, Marvel universe, crossovers or multi-verses back then it was just a plain and simple "Batman" movie.
I feel like flashback Joker got robbed of playing the Joker. That guy doesn't need any prosthetics. He looks straight up from an Alex Ross painting. They couldn't have picked a more perfect guy. Love Jack but he was a bit old and bit fat to play the role during the closing of the 80s. He was perfect in the 70s post Shining. That's what everyone pictured when he was cast but he was just too old.

Problem with the millenials making these vids is that they can't pay attention. Leading to many dumb questions. For example, she keeps saying Jack fell into acid. Even though the movie explained numerous times it was chemicals (green even). Maybe a good idea to not talk over dialigue.
The gun Joker uses to shoot Bruce Wayne is comically small. (Though it makes a loud report.) I take it we're supposed to assume it doesn't have much stopping power.
That gun was a Smith & Wesson Model 1 which shoots a .22 short bullet. Not a powerful round at all but it would probably kill Bruce at that range being shot near the heart but that metal tray very well could have stopped it. Anything bigger would probably go through.

Great month to check it if you do.
Esp October 30th! Devil's Night!
Great reaction Nia look forward to the next.
Esp if it's Horror for October!
17:30 - He slipped the Smilex into makeup and shampoo all over the city. A very Joker thing to do.
Hi Nia, Love your reaction to Batman Michael Keaton, You know he was beetlejuice further before he played Batman You know he was beetlejuice first before he played Batman You know he was beetlejuice first before he played Batman.
Love when he says the line I'm Batman.
You should know that he's gonna be on Saturday night live tomorrow on Saturday with Billie Eilish. You don't wanna miss it.
I hope you watch a second movie Batman🦇
I remember the excitement, when this movie was announced.
Her mocking his body movements because he couldn’t turn his head in that bat suit!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😆 😆 tell me u didn’t do the same though!
@@NiaMakiReacts I didn’t notice it when watching as a child but now as an adult and watching reactors I do it all the time 🤣
You should see every version. Batman is different each time
There are some liberties taken with the general mythos in this, but overall, it’s a great version of Batman.
The prop money in the film also has the Joker's face. But the footage where it was revealed got cut.
30:25 the money is fake. The bills have jokers face on them.
22:18 they’re actually Jordan’s lol!
The acid made Jokers skin super white, he used skin colored make up to cover it up.
I hope you watch the 1966 Batman movie. Anger Management is a great one with Jack Nicholson.
You should react to the direct sequel- Batman Returns. It’s my most favorite Batman film and is also directed by Tim Burton and is way more Burton-esque
When you said what are those referring to the shoes I died laughing…honestly those are actually Jordan 6 sneakers turned to look like boots also you should check out the sequel Batman
returns. You’ll definitely like that as well.
Still my favourite.
The 89 batsuit is hilarious! Keaton has to look around with his whole torso because the mask is built into the mantle and he can barely move his head 🤣🤣🤣
😂 😂 I kept laughing, he couldn’t even look up 😂 😂
@@NiaMakiReacts He hated that suit--they changed it for Batman Returns, which is the only squeal from the 90s that's worth watching. Don't waste your time with the others.
Tim Burton's vision was based around Frank Miller's Dark Knight series from the comics. When this first came out--people argued it should have been named the Joker because of Jack Nicholson's performance. And this did set the stage for later superhero movies.
Same with Batman Returns but they made the rubber softer so he could turn his head.
The shoes batman is wearing is “Air Force ones” modified into boots…if you look closer you can tell😂 and the ones he wears in the sequel to this “batman returns”are “jordans”…Michael Keaton has said he still owns a pair of the air force’s he wore in this somewhere in his home
Lmao! Damn ok, 😂 I couldn’t tell
the reason why batman couldn't move his bat mask head on its own was because his bat suit n the head part mask was all one mold set n he had to move his body n head mask at the same time
Back when I was a kid, there were no hero movies like there are now, no amination....just chris reeves as superman, that's it.
@@PatrickRockwell24 great story!!!!
The police can return the wallet- Batman is a crime fighter, not a boy scout
CHEEKS!!!
PLEASE react to Batman Returns!
I think you might be surprised how different they are :) even though
there is always batman, and reczrring but differently interoreted villains.
I for one look forward to Mosquitogirl saving our city.
Highly recommend Batman: The Animated Series it's the best adaptation of the character.
Happy October🎃
Michael Keaton the best batman. Its the eues behind the mask
As I understand it, hair and fingernails are essentially made of the same stuff - biologically, there's not much difference between them. So since the chemicals turned his hair green, it affected his nails the same way, hence the 'nail polish'.
Hope you go ahead with 'Batman Returns' - it's great.
if you watch action movies from other decades you DO see slower paces the farther back you go

It's the dumbest movie you'll ever see and you'll love it
Batman '89 - [check]
Batman Returns - not a fan, but if you want to watch it, of course watch it
Batman Forever - it's not good, but it's weird, interesting... low-key banger soundtrack (not just Kiss From A Rose)
Batman & Robin - hard pass
You really want to laugh you should check out the pitch meeting of batman
Can you please check Batman and Robin from 1949 ? That's the second Batman. Its a serial film
Ooh, I’ll add that to the poll!
@NiaMakiReacts Thank you Nia ❤️🙂
BEST JOKER EVER!!!...😏😏🫡
You should check out the joker movie .
I've stolen this saying before and I'll steal it again, but if I could become a super hero I would become Batman. Then I'd quit being Batman and just be a rich guy! (Stolen from Michael Swaim)
😂 😂😂😂 I sure wouldn’t mind a couple billion bucks.
@@NiaMakiReacts
Me either!
Same here.
You just really need to jump ahead to the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy.
It wasn't acid in the vat, it was some other chemicals.
Alright. So tell us What the plan is for Naruto. It doesn't seem you’ll be dropping weekly. Do we wait a few months again?
DEAR NIA...INFORMAL!!!...WILL U MAKE A REACTION TO KK3 SOME MOMENT AT ALL???...IN THIS MONTH???...NEXT???...(KARATE KID 3 EVER EH!)?..😐😐😐😐🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨🙄🙄🙄🙄😐😐😐😐😐😒😒😒😒😑
Hey, I actually totally forgot about it, but I added it to my next poll!!!
My favorite of this series is Batman Forever.
I can't hear anything
Problem with the millenials making these vids is that they can't pay attention. Leading to many dumb questions. For example, she keeps saying Jack fell into acid. Even though the movie explained numerous times it was chemicals (green even). Maybe a good idea to not talk over dialigue.
Your bitterness shows the problem lies with you, and not this channel.
