    What an awesome system and inspired me to purchase 28 barrels which I'll be using to make me a rather large garden.
    The tilling and weeding are too much for me any more and this is simple and perfect for my needs.
    Great Job Brother...Thank you.

    Love it. 1.On your drain holes you can cut up some old T-shirts put a not at the end. Drop them in the white 55gal drum. If you forget to water the plants will get the water from the T-shirt hanging in the white 55gal drum. 2.You can also plant the (3 sisters) corn,beans and squash.3.you can also put cans in the bottom of the blue 55gal drum to save on potting soil.4. If you put some cardboard in the blue 55gal drums you will get more worm castings. Hope this help. Be blessed.

    I cut some of bigger barrels vertically like this. They are shallow, but I laid a 100mm wicking bed of 5mm river gravel at the bottom and lined them with cardboard. Fine for herbs and shallow rooted veg. Stuck a 600mm length of 20mm irrigation tube at one end for watering w a drain hole at the opposite end.
    btw Never use "treated" anything around food plants.

    I like your setup..
    Like one person commented before me about raising fish along with your Green's Garden. And circulating the fish water to irrigate your plants raising fish and fertilizing your garden at the same time. Other videos I watched on aquaponics the person circulated the fish water and irrigated all plant beds and as the water filled the plant bed areas he had a bell siphon so the water raised to the top of the Bell siphon and dropped, drained from plant conrainer and slowly filled again not allowing the roots to stay wet constantly . It seemed brilliant. Sorry about the long spew thanks for the video

So that if they use it for livestock or gardening purposes they provide the ones that are food grade. They are in Houston Texas and I am 30 minutes away from them. They deliver with $25 delivery fee. I got the 11 barrels I ordered now. I will order some more.

      Mosquitoes would be a big concern and algae too. I was thinking about all the wonderful nutrients that are getting washed through the soil and into the white drums. Ideally he'd have some kind of eaves trough collection system, all draining into a single drum that he could scoop out the black gold. Can we get an update to these videos? Now that you've used it for 1 summer.

  • @denstump4590
    @denstump4590 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nice system. However with all that work and parts used maybe you should change it to Hydroponics and forget about the dirt! I have been doing allot of research and watching many videos for simple easy setups to build myself. Looks much cheaper, easier, less mess bugs plant issues No weeds etc....
    I was planning to build something this year like you have there myself, but then while looking at various ways to automate a system I've found 3 types of DIY Hydroponic systems I will be trying. All cheap and easy to build and pretty much just start and forget until harvest time. Well almost forget anyway.
    I need something I can just plant and forget for myself since I travel allot. I am great at getting good startings from seeds but then before I can get them planted I have to travel and everything just dies while I am gone. I planted early one year before a trip and a darned late frost killed everything.

    White barrels are from wheir and cost and do you drain into them. Especially where I can't find them

  • @gencenointeli6496
    @gencenointeli6496 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would seem to me there is a fair amount of unused space between the barrels. The width of the barrels is narrow enough to place them together with a trellis between them.
    Additionally, the ends can be together. This would allow for additional rows.
    On the subject of piping, a single line down the middle of each barrel row supported around 12 - 15 inches above the soil should be enough. When drilling the holes, offset them around 10-15 degrees or more in a V pattern facing down & then use the valves to control the pressure so that the water exiting the pin holes sprays over a wider area.
    I use pallet wood whenever possible which is normally available free, for example, to support the barrels. Additionally, I would have ensured the height of the barrels halves was at a comfortable height
    I think that you would benefit from an air gap between the white barrels and the carpet to allow for drying and avoiding mold formation. This would also allow you to adjust the height of the blue barrels for comfort
    I don't think that indoor/outdoor carpeting is intended to be placed directly on the ground. Heavy-duty UV protected landscaping cloth would be my choice. I would seek out broken & chipped paving stones from a manufacturer or wholesaler to create a footpath between the barrels. Again, pallet wood would also do the job, along with making your own patio slab stones.
    I also hope that you took into account shading that could be caused by nearby trees and the path of the sun to maximize exposure.
    Finally, don't forget to add hail protection. Shade cloth is not designed to stop hail damage. It might, but then again it likely won't.

      I was going to say the same thing. when I used 5 gal. buckets for container gardening I put several 1/2" holes in them and luckily I had cause we had a wet season that year and most people had to replant there gardens(some more than once) and my garden survived and I've never had issues with them drying out either (draught dry)

    Is this setup supposed to wick water to the plants?

  • @ralphkinsley8192
    @ralphkinsley8192 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great idea. Two suggestions
    1) Eliminate the carpet. Weeds are beneficial if they do not compete with your crops for nutrient. They tend to flower all season long and attract beneficial insects and pollinators.
    2) Eliminate the watering system and convert all the containers to wicking tubs. (th-cam.com/video/9guNoWP8_ls/w-d-xo.html) Plug the drainage holes with silicone. Works much better and impossible to over water. You can add nutrient to the fill tube and apply at the root level where it belongs. You could retain much of the plumbing if you are real lazy like me. Use the basic plumbing to run a 5 gal per hour dripper to each bed. Put it on a timer to run weekly.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Ralph
