That carpet is gonna mold up and smell BAD

Wow, that looks fantastic. And here I thought making self watering planters out of those old barrels was ingenious.

I cut some of bigger barrels vertically like this. They are shallow, but I laid a 100mm wicking bed of 5mm river gravel at the bottom and lined them with cardboard. Fine for herbs and shallow rooted veg. Stuck a 600mm length of 20mm irrigation tube at one end for watering w a drain hole at the opposite end. btw Never use "treated" anything around food plants.

Love your set up! Instead of the carpet to control weeds I would lay down layers of cardboard, newspapers, and wood chips….

How are you protecting your pipes from freezing?

Is this setup supposed to wick water to the plants?

At first I thought why waste a barrel making 2 stands and then I thought about it. I get 55 gallon barrels for $15 a price so one stand is $7.50. there is no way I can build a stand out of wood for that price. I am so glad I came across your video. Thank you

be sure to paint any plastic (pipe or barrel) that is exposed to the sun or it will deteriorate and break apart.

Great looking system. I do think your gonna have problems with your plants growing onto the ever green trees and climbing up the trees.

the carpet tip is amazing...better than buying landscape fabric...

honestly i will give you an A for effort but it waste a lot of space, the base can be used for planting as well..suggest to use 2x4 and do a base...

Paint the PVC black then you wont have a problem down the road with Algae build up inside the pipes. Sunlight will penetrate the pvc.. Black Polyline is what I use in my Nursery. GREAT Video

Great idea. Two suggestions 1) Eliminate the carpet. Weeds are beneficial if they do not compete with your crops for nutrient. They tend to flower all season long and attract beneficial insects and pollinators. 2) Eliminate the watering system and convert all the containers to wicking tubs. (th-cam.com/video/9guNoWP8_ls/w-d-xo.html) Plug the drainage holes with silicone. Works much better and impossible to over water. You can add nutrient to the fill tube and apply at the root level where it belongs. You could retain much of the plumbing if you are real lazy like me. Use the basic plumbing to run a 5 gal per hour dripper to each bed. Put it on a timer to run weekly. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Ralph

White barrels are from wheir and cost and do you drain into them. Especially where I can't find them

I would add coco coir instead of soil and use them as coco-ponic beds
