it's been 20 years the show got cancelled. Perhaps it is best time to revive this in high budget fox movie. James Morrison is already in his 60's. We can't wait another 10 years, this is his last chance to be McQueen again
+TheMultiGunMan 'Cancelled' is such a polite term. 'Sabotaged' is probably more accurate. Fox never really gave this show a chance. They shuffled its time slot so many times that it was almost impossible to know when it would be on, and during NFL season it was often pre-empted outright. Then they cried that the ratings were poor and pulled the plug after only one season, in the very middle of a story arc.
"...I'm going to drink a bottle of scotch like it was Chiggy von Richthofen's blood, and celebrate his death." James Morrison delivered that line perfectly.

He trained his pilots to NEVER shoot at helpless pilots. He was so respected for his gallantry that when he was finally shot down, the Allies recovered his body and buried him with full military honors. They even called a temporary truce to allow von Richtoffen's brother to attend the funeral. Chiggy was a disgrace to the name he was given.
@@erikjaroy8214 the humans hung that name on him. But that being said it got Col McQueen to get up, strap on his big iron and go out there and get it done. Because nobody else could
This show was great. The sci-fi babies cried that it was too dark, to depressing, why must humanity be loosing the war, why are the characters flawed. That’s who humans are. How we act in difficult situations appeals to some of us. If you like simple spoon fed plots, with light humor and nice characters, fine. But the hate towards anything that isn’t in that simplistic mold is comical to me. Just appreciate what you like, and not attack those who appreciate something different.
The unfortunate truth of the matter is that war is hell. There are no easy answers. As a veteran myself, that's why I appreciate this show. Life isn't black and white. It's grey. Only the dead have seen the end of war.
And yet, less than a decade later.......a similarly dark intense rebooted Battlestar Galactica was hugely popular and successful. It legitimizes your take. ....And shows how rough Timing can be. Battlestar may well owe it's success to this show being the marines who plowed the road....for them.
Back in the day....there were actual officers that garnered the kind of respect and gratitude from their troops as McQueen did in this show. We bitched and moaned...but if the regiment went without Major or Lt. Col so an so we shat our pants. He made our lives miserable but at least we still had lives at the end of the LRP
I was SO disappointed when they axed this series. especially after only one season. Yes! They need to bring it back! Of course it was launched at the height of "Wing Commander" video game fame. I was working out in the Deserts of South Texas looking for traces of Ancient inhabitants. And I came home looking for a little Honor, Respect, and Esprit de Corp to carry me through to the next day!
I have the box set and i remember watching this in the late 90s. I watched a video about the red baron and this popped up in my TH-cam today. The angriest angle set out to erase one of his creations from the sky
I always found it interesting that Chiggy normally attacked from behind, taking out one or multiple fighters before they even knew what hit them... not in the fight against McQueen though. He approached directly from the front, in full view of McQueen... why? I like to think that Chiggy reasoned, after seeing just *one single fighter* coming out, that this was the Chig equivalent of throwing down your handcuff and demand a duel to the death. Maybe some form of respect for a pilot who dared to take him on alone, without any support.
Chiggy was probably waiting for the humans to send out their Ace to meet him. When he saw the McQueen's lone fighter on his sensors he was probably thinking: "Finally a true fight." and gave his people's version of a Tally-Ho and Hoorah.
It's the difference between attacking novice pilots who didn't know what hit them before it was too late....and going head to head with an Ace pilot whose expecting you.
SD501st I think it's because on all of the previous occasions, the fighter squads had been bounced and ambushed by Chiggy Von Rickhoffen, and either were caught completely unawares, or were completely on-edge and half-terrified by the anticipation of if and when he WOULD turn up, and so consequently, the whole squad went to pieces and he was successfully able to maintain the initiative and run rings around them. Whereas, when McQueen flew out alone to challenge him, he knew he was out there, because he went looking for him, and knew he had to still somewhere in the area, lurking just out of sight of the carriers. A big part of this is this whole Idea of Ace Pilots (like the original Red Baron), that really gets played up here is the fact of their reputation preceding them and the psychological effect it has on The Enemy, which can often be of even military benefit, if it causes wings of enemy fighters to break formation and scatter at the sight of it. Chiggy might be a great pilot of remarkable ability, and his fighter invisible to LIDAR but the Hammerhead still has firepower, rate of fire and rate of climb/acceleration superior to his ship, and all of his advantages of radar- invisibility and a faster, more manuverable craft are taken away and negated when faced by an opponent that comes looking for him, and flies straight at him.
If they ever did reboot this, we all know that they would ruin it. They wouldn't make it as dark or morally challenging as it was. One of the best dramas, let alone sci fi series, ever made.
This episode was probably the best of them all. The tension, expectation when he got into the fighter and took on VonRich, was gripping stuff to say the least. It was the sort of drama you would expect with a film not a series on TV

There was a story about the Hammerhead fighters used in this series - they were built in Japan, and shipped to the US for the film sequences. They were so convincing, that Chinese spies actually were on the freighter, and opened up the shipment crates to photograph them!
Seam Terrell neither did I, but at least that one character (I forget his name) got to reunite with his girlfriend in the series finale instead of Fox ending the show with a cliffhanger like a lot of other shows had in the past

Great scenes from great episodes of a great sci-fi series that deserved more notice and more support from its network than it received. The scene where Colonel McQueen faces off with the chaplain is written and acted to perfection!
One of my favourite (and most missed) Sci-Fi shows ever. I first watched it on SKY at a friends' house and was then lucky enough to be able to record every episode when at a later date they were shown on terrestrial tv. Unfortunately, those recordings were on VHS and have now been 'lost'. I've seen DVD collections advertised, but I'm not sure any of them are 'complete' (it's been over 20 years, but my recollection of the last episode I saw...actually, on reflection I'm going to edit/move this next bit (scroll right down) so as not to spoil things for anyone who hasn't seen the series before. Also, to my recollection, there seemed to be two series/seasons, although I ever only seem to see reference to one. However, it's possible that over here in the UK, the series was split/broadcast in two parts, each with a different intro/title sequence (?) *** SPOILER ALERT *** *** SERIOUSLY, I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THINGS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T ALREADY SEEN IT *** *** OKAY, I TRIED TO BE CONSIDERATE AND GIVE PEOPLE A HEADS-UP *** West ( together with Hawkes ? ) finds and rescues his missing girlfriend / Vansen sacrifices herself, and an unconscious Damphousse - I think Wang had been KIA at this point; to facilitate their escape). My favourite episodes:- The one where A.I.'s have taken over a mining facility, captured Hawkes and to buy time he plays to their fascination with odds/probability and tells them to "take a chance". The one with 'bad-ass' Ray Butts. The one where Hawkes has to cut power to the section of an in-vitro transport where his 'unborn' sister is, in order to save the rest of the ship. .
I remember I had never seen this show before, but I caught the episode where Chiggy von Richthofen made his debut and I was like "I want to see them finally take this guy down. I don't now who he is...but he needs to go."
Always left comparing this alien to "The Red Baron" was a little unfair. Yes during WW1 the Germsns has SLIGHTLY better planes (not by much) and yes Richtophen used that advantage to do aerial surprise attacks from above...but he was also one of the best marksman and pilots to EVER fly a plane from the era. The man who shot him down, Eddy Richanbacher, said as much. Chiggy had radar jamming, superior speed and manuverability even for his races' fighters, his fighter's seeming ability to operate alone and away from a BoA for extended periods. A chassis all but immune to cannon fire that could take at least one direct missile hit before needing repairs. The list goes on. He was at best a slightly above average alien pilot who relied on his tech advantage...which got him killed once a real ace showed up.
Agreed. Chiggy was closer to Erich Hartmann, who performed ambushes and shot at close range against poorly equipped and trained Soviet pilots (at the time they often didn't even have sights and just drew a circle on their canopy in pen), while not being anything special at aerial combat at all. Or disregarding flying aces altogether, Michael Wittman, a Tank Ace who used poor tactics and pranced around the battlefield as he pleased because his Tiger was nearly invulnerable against the Soviet tanks he was facing. Which is why he died to a US Firefly who could actually penetrate his armour.
@@LibJumper Minor caveat regarding Mr. Wittmann, he cut his teeth in StuG IIIs and Pz. IIIs, being assigned to a Tiger in 1943. So from 1939 to 1943 he was hardly prancing around battlefields in an invulnerable tank. Far from it, in fact, bearing in mind that T34s and KV 1 and 2s - numerous in the Soviet arsenal - were equipped with better guns and were better armoured than either a 1941-42 vintage Pz. III or Sturmgeschütz. The long barrelled Ausf. F StuG being fielded in mid to late 1942 and the Pz. III‘s main armament never exceeding 5cm, in its medium tank role. In order for Wittmann to get a Tiger - let alone command a force of Tigers - he needed to have survived and excelled in the bloody fighting from 1941 to 1943 on the Eastern Front. Not exactly a cake walk. Allied tankers in Normandy were bloody lucky that the Luftwaffe was otherwise engaged and that air superiority was theirs as a result. Without it, they would have suffered significantly higher casualties than they already did. Against an enemy still mostly equipped with Panzer IVs, StuGs and even some late model Pz. IIIs. The lion’s share of Tigers only coming West late into 1944.

Johnny Dominguez Just saying this particular Chaplain is Navy.
I'll bet the Chaplain wanted to make peace with HIS maker after facing off with McQueen!
Col. Macqueen vs Chiggy von Richthofen ...best dog-fight in SciFi-history! ...cheers
True leadership is always from the front! This show definately needs a reboot.
If there was a reboot, it would need faaaaar more depth.
but without sacrificing the scifi otherwise they shouldnt bother
Miss this show so much... too bad it's not the whole episode. I love the interaction between the characters that spurs him to go into battle.
This was such a great show and did not deserve to be cancelled after just one season
Dang I loved this series. So under appreciated. Telling off the Chaplain was one of my favorite scenes to boot.
6:59 Chiggy Von Richtofen is so malicious...I mean he not only destroyes an escape pod...but he circles it first. He let's the her know that he is going to kill her, taunting her with the fact.
That made Chiggy thoroughly unworthy of his moniker. Manfred von Richtoffen was a consummate gentleman pilot who fought his enemies with honor.
Because nobody else could
Never heard of this show. I have to watch it now!
a great show " Space above and beyond"
Every Sunday, I made sure that no matter what, I was in front of the TV to watch it.
When I think of Space Above and Beyond, I think of this episode. Love this one.
Coleman Sisley powerful statement.
And yet, less than a decade later.......a similarly dark intense rebooted Battlestar Galactica was hugely popular and successful. It legitimizes your take. ....And shows how rough Timing can be. Battlestar may well owe it's success to this show being the marines who plowed the road....for them.
This was a bad ass ep. I loved this show. Amen.
Going to wear my Hammerhead tshirt next week :)
I’ve always found the best leaders didn’t even know they were great. Others had to tell them that.
At least the Red Baron had the sense of honor not to fire on a man who'd parachuted out of a plane he'd shot down.
Fuckin' chiggs man.....
One of my all-time favorite shows! I was surprised that McQueen had room in that Hammerhead for his massive balls!😁☠️💪
the absolute best scene in this series. what a golden show!
All these years later, and I still look back at this show, wishing it hadn't been cancelled! :(
this one is for you Winslow. Best EP of the show.
Marcel Ebert Probably the first time it happened!
Then after the first pass discovered why he didn't bother with support fighters!
Chiggy was probably waiting for the humans to send out their Ace to meet him. When he saw the McQueen's lone fighter on his sensors he was probably thinking:
"Finally a true fight." and gave his people's version of a Tally-Ho and Hoorah.
It's the difference between attacking novice pilots who didn't know what hit them before it was too late....and going head to head with an Ace pilot whose expecting you.
Overconfidence possibly,... chiggy was used to attacking multiple targets & putting them down
SD501st I think it's because on all of the previous occasions, the fighter squads had been bounced and ambushed by Chiggy Von Rickhoffen, and either were caught completely unawares, or were completely on-edge and half-terrified by the anticipation of if and when he WOULD turn up, and so consequently, the whole squad went to pieces and he was successfully able to maintain the initiative and run rings around them.
He had the first part of the inscription on the Gates of Hell from Dante's Inferno painted on his Starfighter. That's gangsta.
My maker was some geek in a lab coat with an eyedropper and a petri dish. What would I need to make peace with him for? Fuck yeah TC, fuck yeah.
hooah
If any show needs a remake....its this one ;-)
I agree it's this show
If they ever did reboot this, we all know that they would ruin it. They wouldn't make it as dark or morally challenging as it was. One of the best dramas, let alone sci fi series, ever made.
Today, instead of cloned humans - 'Tanks', they would have 'Trans/whatever' SJW fighters.
That's because the story will not mirror on what got it dropped to begin with...
Big brother bashing.
Probably the best one on one sci-fi fight scenes I've ever seen..... AWESOME.
LOVED this show! So sad when it got canceled!
'Sewell Fuel, Son.' 😉 [22 years; and, I still remember that term]
This an awesome episode in an already awesome show and i still have it on dvd.😎
This was one of the best episodes...
Kept waiting for the "abandon all hope, my ass" clip.
I am going to drink a bottle of scotch as if it was Chiggy von Richthofens blood. Man I almost got a stiffy when he said that, lol!!!
Hugely underrated masterpiece.
I'm looking at the box set sitting right next to my X-Box. Loved this show.
Now this is a show they need to bring back.
One of the most underrated shows of all time.
This was such a great show, should not have gotten cancelled.
Chaplain's "Amen" was just perfect 😎👌
OMG....PLEASE re-boot this show!!!
2019 now this needs to be digitally remastered especially the space battle scenes!
Always loved the scene with the Chaplain. It reminded me of several Navy Chaplains who served with Marines, they are a special breed.
This episode was probably the best of them all.
The tension, expectation when he got into the fighter and took on VonRich, was gripping stuff to say the least.
It was the sort of drama you would expect with a film not a series on TV
I loved this show, saw every episode
Amen.
I so miss this show used to love watching it with my dad brings back good memory’s one of the finest sci fi shows their was only Babylon 5 beat it for me, DS9 was good but space above and beyond was more realistic. Think I’ll have a glass of whisky and toast the memory of such a great show. Thank you for sharing this.
Best line ever, "Don't you want to make peace with your maker." "Why would want to do that, my maker was a geek in laboratory with an eye dropper and a petri dish." 😂🤣😂 Savage..
So glad I found this, I too loved this show, and this episode was my favourite, a fair bit of the back story is missing but you get the point, excellent tv and sorely missed.
This was a very good show for its time I wish it would have continued
Sci-fi show on Fox. It was doomed from the start.
There was a story about the Hammerhead fighters used in this series - they were built in Japan, and shipped to the US for the film sequences. They were so convincing, that Chinese spies actually were on the freighter, and opened up the shipment crates to photograph them!
They were built in Australia, also shots for pilot's scenes was taken in Australia in Australian Air Force Base.
Such an awesome show.
I loved this show. Way ahead of its time. Great acting and the SFX were really good.
Sure would be nice to find it streaming someplace.
Check out Amazon - they have the dvds for $30, they may also offer streaming.
This show needs a reboot!
8:00
We'll talk about your mother when we get back!
And his chief briefly flashed a laugh and then suppressed it
the best part of the series in one youtube clip--this was a very powerful ep.
I loved this show and this episode in particular.
Seam Terrell same here, it gave us a chance to see McQueen in action as a fighter pilot, which we never got to see in the pilot episode
Karl smith, that's true. I never found out why it was cancelled.
Seam Terrell neither did I, but at least that one character (I forget his name) got to reunite with his girlfriend in the series finale instead of Fox ending the show with a cliffhanger like a lot of other shows had in the past
Excerpts from the series "Space above and beyond". Judging Hammerhead'ów of Chiggy von Richthofen
Episode 15: "Never no more"
Episode 16: "The Angriest Angel"
Would love to see this brought back
thank you
for uploading this video
Thanks for the memories
The best alien pilot before Scar hit the scene.
The plot was identical. utterly identical.
"The Scar", You mean China Miéville's novel from 2002?
Scar from the 2004-2010 Battlestar Galactica series.
8UP1977 Frak me, as I type this comment, I have VLC player paused with *Scar* playing on it. I kept thinking: "BSG _must've_ got the idea for this episode from Space Above & Beyond's _Abandon All Hope_! Let me go see whats on TH-cam." lol
Small world...
+cory stereo not really, scar was nothing special, just an ace. this one has superior tech
one day, way back when , I got to make a piece of scenery on this show - its not much, but its all I got
That is so cool!
I have been looking for this show online for a long time. Loved it as a kid.
I've owned the series on DVD for years. Time to re-watch. "Shuffle up the Wildcards and deal em!"
The cancellation of this show was one the greatest trageties.
What do you expect from a FOX show, they cancel anything good after 1 season because they are cheapskates and don't want to spend money making quality shows.
I think its memory shines brighter because of it.
This show rocked.
It lasted for 24 episodes.
Great scenes from great episodes of a great sci-fi series that deserved more notice and more support from its network than it received. The scene where Colonel McQueen faces off with the chaplain is written and acted to perfection!
Thanks for posting this...I forgot how much I loved this show..
However, it's possible that over here in the UK, the series was split/broadcast in two parts, each with a different intro/title sequence (?)
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
*** SERIOUSLY, I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THINGS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T ALREADY SEEN IT ***
*** OKAY, I TRIED TO BE CONSIDERATE AND GIVE PEOPLE A HEADS-UP ***
West ( together with Hawkes ? ) finds and rescues his missing girlfriend / Vansen sacrifices herself, and an unconscious Damphousse - I think Wang had been KIA at this point; to facilitate their escape).
My favourite episodes:-
The one where A.I.'s have taken over a mining facility, captured Hawkes and to buy time he plays to their fascination with odds/probability and tells them to "take a chance".
Underrated and underappreciated show for its time !!! A lost n forgotten gem
Not forgotten : >
The song of Snoopy vs the Red Baron was running through my mind whilst watching this but it became Chiggy von Richtofen was his name.
Loved watching this during the 90's but never got to se the final episode.
Might try and find it now
"This one's for you, Winslow."
The most under-rated sci-fi series of all time. Needs to be brought back ASAP!
It was horrible. The constant noise of explosions in space damaged my eardrums!
That speech by McQueen is one of the two greatest ever ! (The other is Ivanova's "I am death incarnate..." in B5.)
