  • During this first part of episode 8 I take my narrowboat Bandersnatch along the Macclesfield Canal from Marple Junction to Macclesfield. we see some stunning mills - The Goat Mill, The Clarence Mill, The Adelphi Mill, and The Hovis Mill. I offer my thoughts on what I miss about about living in a house, and what I hate about boat life! There's some dredging and some cracking Cheshire scenery.

    This was a lovely video, I really enjoy seeing those old mills. It’s a shame the made the Hovis advert in Shaftesbury, Dorset! Thanks for sharing your adventure.

      Yes, although Shaftesbury is beautiful. And thinking about it now I doubt the voiceover accent was Macclesfield, I recollect something more Yorkshire, but such is advertising. And did you know that Ridley Scott was the director for that commercial?

    Hi Andrew, I've just stumbled on your vlogs and really enjoying them. I too live aboard our narrowboat (Chugabug) with my wife and two dogs, welcome to boat life.

      Hey thanks Gary, and boat life is pretty amazing. Been on board 6 months now and I'm just doing a vlog reviewing that time. Pleased you're enjoying them.

    Think that sunken cruiser has been there a while as seen it in other vlogs....that was an old engine less bitty boat...they needed the larger tiller to help steer it...which would have been pulled by an engines boat...or horse drawn boat....most often the wife or older kids steered the butty....

      Thanks. I try to keep the videos short in the hope that people will watch all the way through which is why I would rather do something like The Macc in two parts.

    LOL - as the administrator of the Bollington Facebook group, I had to smile that when you got to Bollington, you complained about dog poo ;-)

    • @talesfromtheswansneck
      @talesfromtheswansneck  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Rob, it wasn't too much of a problem at Bollington - apart from where I'd moored. I've seen much much worse especially in more urban locations. No disrespect to Bollington intended it was a fab location and good mooring

      Bor and bred In Bollington next to bridge 27, when green fields where the norm and building plots were rare. Clarence Mill was my first place of work. Happy days in the happy valley with many tales of many childhood memories.

    Great Andrew. The test run I did to see if I would like to buy and long term cruise on was from Higher Poynton to Whaley Bridge / Bugsworth and back. Big difference, we did it in Storm Denis. By the look of it the weather was good for you. Keep on cruising and regards Michael

    The tidy little garden you pass at 2minutes 58 seconds into the video is in front of a "Woodford aerodrome" pattern World War two gun emplacement made out of reinforced concrete, it is most obvious when seen from the farm track canal over bridge.

    • @talesfromtheswansneck
      @talesfromtheswansneck  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah I missed that bit. Was there also an aerodrome next to Bosley Locks? I remember seeing a light aircraft in the field there

    Macclesfield was also the birthplace of Ian Curtis, a gifted, but quite tortured musician...

    • @talesfromtheswansneck
      @talesfromtheswansneck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Far too many creatives are tortured I'm afraid, but I guess that's where the inspiration comes from.

    Andrew I’m enjoying your vlogs. I was wondering what the typical depth of a canal is. How much does your boat draw?

    • @talesfromtheswansneck
      @talesfromtheswansneck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Patrick, pleased you're enjoying the vlogs. Canals are generally 'u' shaped and, depending on the canal, are around 4 to 5 foot (1.5 metres) deep in the middle. Some however such as the Huddersfield Narrow are 'v' shaped so are much shallower at the edges. The draw of my boat is allegedly 22 inches (56 cms) but I think it is more likely about 27 inches (69 cms).

    One thing about living on the boat you have no poll tax to pay for
    But all you have is your river tax and insurance same as your car and no electricity bills as well

    People who keep dogs should take responsibility. Why do they think we all love dogs? These people think dogs are cute. Sorry. They are not. Don't let them be more anoying then they allready are.
