  • Belief in democracy and free markets or a command and control economy. If you think an economy is a plug-and-play device, as Moscow projects and Moscow can make economic gestures to developing nations and outpace free people and free markets, you must consider this video.

I guess I'm naive and /or uninformed. I don't know why any country or party, in particular the European so-called "far right" support Russia. Where the hell are their scuples? Russia's invasion of Ukraine is no different from Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939, and I just cant' see why any country would side with that. Okay, two possible reasons:
      1. These countries get stuff from Russia: oil, weapons, tofu dreg bridges, etc.
      2. They support Russia out of spite for the west and the U.S.A. in particular. Okay, you might have a legitimate beef - but why does that translate into supporting bully boy Russia? How would India like it, for example, if China started invading it? They'd be singing a different tune, no doubt.

The North Wind & the Sun
The North Wind and the Sun had a quarrel about which of them was the stronger. While they were disputing with much heat and bluster, a Traveler passed along the road wrapped in a cloak.
"Let us agree," said the Sun, "that he is the stronger who can strip that Traveler of his cloak."
"Very well," growled the North Wind, and at once sent a cold, howling blast against the Traveler.
With the first gust of wind the ends of the cloak whipped about the Traveler's body. But he immediately wrapped it closely around him, and the harder the Wind blew, the tighter he held it to him. The North Wind tore angrily at the cloak, but all his efforts were in vain.
Then the Sun began to shine. At first his beams were gentle, and in the pleasant warmth after the bitter cold of the North Wind, the Traveler unfastened his cloak and let it hang loosely from his shoulders. The Sun's rays grew warmer and warmer. The man took off his cap and mopped his brow. At last he became so heated that he pulled off his cloak, and, to escape the blazing sunshine, threw himself down in the welcome shade of a tree by the roadside.
Gentleness and kind persuasion win where force and bluster fail.

Very real risk?... I had to stop myself from being extremely disrespectful. Your point is invalid, unless you mean minor border skirmishes, which can hardly be called "an invsasion".
China doesn't even dare invade Taiwan, a country with 1/50th of the population and 1/100th of the size and not even international recognition as a proper country. Even if you account for Taiwain being an island, India has the Himalayas, they might as well be an island from the perspective of the People's Liberation Army.
On top of all of that...INDIA HAS NUKES. If you think China invading India is a "very real risk" then you vastly overestimate the capabilities of the Chinese and vastly underestimate how badly they rely on the global economy remaining stable.
If a Chinese invasion of India was anywhere near of a risk, then they already would have taken Taiwan. The fact they haven't proves that India is safe from anything more than minor nuisances.

Hey Mark! I have been getting more & more into your channel over the past couple months.
I feel like America needs to get it’s own house in order, so we can better support Ukraine and other countries in similar situations.
Following along with that train of thought: What can average Americans do to help keep the dollar (and by extension: America) strong? I know that you’re a big believer in human innovation (as am I), but I am looking for practical things that anyone can do to help with our economy.
I really enjoy hearing your perspective on the current economic and geopolitical events around the world! Thank you!

I am not sure how long Russia can keep their economy propped up. They are going through their war chest at an accelerated rate. When they can’t keep up the facade, the ruble may crash and take their economy with them. If Putin can’t turn things around this autumn, they may be in panic mode by January. Is there a way to short the Russian economy before that happens?

Oslo, Norway: In a discussion about the quality of Russian constructions and inventions in the sector of military equipment as against that of the West, a former chief of defense here said something like "The Russians have not invented any of it. Whatever works they have stolen." If so, it seems indicative of a whole 'world view' prevalent in Russia, something like what you say in this video. Has anyone seen any of the videos of open street interviews in Russia done by Daniil Orain?
Can I recommend for your readers, Mark, an autobiography: Milton and Rose D. Friedman: "Two Lucky Paople. Memoirs" from 1998. It was very enjoyable and illuminating, both about economy and deliberations about it. (I am not an economist.)

P&W made the SR71 Engines during your Father's career, you mean they didn't just develop that in a week? Anyway, I agree with your analysis on this and your other content. I have felt the same as an ex stock and commodity researcher. I worry; however, that I found someone who shares my view rather than someone who knows more than me. You do have some facts to back your arguments, but I know how facts can be selected. So, I will continue to nod in agreement while being skeptical if that is OK. More content please. Anyway, I enjoy your content and of course I want to know how you found that airfare. I need to get to the UK again this year and it is normally 1200USD or 1000Pounds sterling.

I could not get my classic Suzuki GS1100 repaired for the past 3.years because my expert mechanic’s full time job is at Raytheon, I assume he is a machinist, and he was getting so much overtime he had no time to fix my bike no matter what I was willing to pay. That place is huge and the US definitely has a huge amount of old munitions to give Ukraine our old stuff. After the war is won by Ukraine I will definitely be interested in investing in their industry they have great potential don’t you agree?

Working in IT in the administration of systems I totally get the analogy. People have no idea the amount of work it is to get ONE (1) system into your corporation. Not just assessing demands, laws and regulations and the economical side of things, but then working in an already complicated environment with firewalls, servers, ports, IP-adresses, updates, adjustments, developments etc. And then we haven't even started to consider licencing administration, upholding contract obligations, producer, supplier and support management. Not to mention spare parts, backups, incident and problem management and a whole slew of other things. Then we get into education, manuals, information, process handling, adjusting work environment and handling. This is just out of the top of my head.
And that's just for one system.
russia really deficated on themselves with the invasion. A modern corporation and/or factory is a veritable nets of spider nets of machines, software, spare parts, suppliers, maintenance and all of the above I written about one system. A factory maybe have tens if not hundreds of different machines and software that needs to constantly to be monitored and adjusted. By people you mostly have to either hire and educate, or buy by the hour from the manufacturer of the machine. Not to mention the knowledge of how to set up and maintain the whole chain.
All the access to this disappeared on February 24, 2022.
One thing people usually forget is the education. For most of those machines you can't put anyone on the factory floor in front of. They need education, training and working next to someone. Understand the machine, the different parts and how it all hangs together. This take time, money and resources. Then suddenly that person is snatched up, thrown an AK-74 in his hand and is running towards the Ukrainian frontlines. The moment that person is instead pushing sunflowers all that education is gone.
You cannot live without that access of knowledge, bot external and internal. You can survive. But only for so long. Especially when russia is running out of people who are even able to manage those machines.
And no, neither China nor India have the know-how, machines or the software for the above.

Unfortunately, these things did not necessarily disappear because sanctions evasion is still widespread. There has certainly been degradation but many companies in western countries, Europe especially, are still supplying maintenance, spare parts and software updates and so on through proxies and loopholes. You are right that Russia could not continue to manufacture military hardware if these things were withheld, unfortunately they are not sufficiently withheld in reality. See for example Rhodus Intelligence's research.

Don't think India is really into Russia. They are just taking advantage of the situations, as soon the cooperation with Russia is not hugely economically beneficially to India, it will end. The Soviet-Afghan War was a significant factor that contributed to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, believe Ukraine war will do the sam to Russia. Even if not, Russia will never be able to replenish the weapon reserve they had before this war, particularly regarding infantry armoured vehicles and tanks, no to mention the glorious black sea fleet.....

Appreciate your perspectives and generally agree with your conclusions. However international trade considerations are not as simple as you suggest. By way of example consider that India is only 75 years out from more than a century of colonial subjugation by the 'West'. They are recovering and fairly enough want to do business on their terms. As you correctly state Russia needs India now and that works for India. However as soon as an economic alliance with Russia ceases to be a net benefit India will walk. In the meantime we in the West will continue to business with India.
