    You really piqued my interest in this, Mike, as I seem to vaguely remember it. I watched the youtube version this morning and it did indeed look beautiful (no ads) and I enjoyed the locations and the discussions on faith. Trevor Howard was excellent especially in the final scene. I don’t know how they could take that out. I had trouble finding it on imdb. I finally located as part of an ITV weekly anthology series. Then I found the US version titled Conflict that played on CBS a few months before the ITV showing. What’s strange is this would have been shown in 1.33 on tv. Yet it seemed perfectly composed at 1.85. Perhaps there might have been ambitions to show it theatrically but I could not find any evidence of that. So that makes it additionally surprising that the wide screen aspect ration is the one in circulation. And I did see this long ago. i recalled several scenes in particular Sheen ripping up the Abbot’s letter.

      Great comments, Roger. I'm glad I inspired you to watch this movie again! Trevor Howard breaks my heart in that final scene. I wondered the same thing about the widescreen presentation on The Conflict release. Mystery upon mystery! I think I'm confusing Cheezy Movies with Cheezy Flicks, as they apparently are two different entities. Whoever made this disc must have recorded it from television, or made a copy of a copy, and wasn't paying attention to his work. My next move is to have a copy made of my VHS tape. And to write a note to Cheezy Movies. Have a great weekend!

    I have a few VHS that use the term approxiately just scanning them fairly quickly: Howard's End, Dark Passage, and Casablanca. It may be due to the company putting out the tapes. I don't know.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for pointing that out. It's something I never noticed until now. I still have a few VHS tapes stored away, so I'll see if any of them have the same term.

    Sorry that happened, Mike. It's happened to me over the decades too, though can't recall specifically now. Good you can transfer the VHS.

      Hi Joe! Another TH-cam friend volunteered to download a DVD-R from another YT channel. I've seen this video and it's i great condition and is uncut. And it arrived in the mail today, as a matter of fact, and it looks wonderful. So, my dilemma is indeed solved. Thanks for commenting!

    Hi Mike!! That is so frustrating....I really identify with hoping to get a a complete version of a movie. I'm guessing the cuts were for TV transmission, to make room for commercials (they often cut an early scene), though that would not explain the one without the ending scene --😒. That movie sounds interesting to me. I was also Catholic and one thing that turned me off was abandoning Latin for the mass, among other things. I recently had a video frustration receiving one of those two-disc Blu-ray+DVD editions: without the blu-ray! It was a factory-sealed (or seemed to be) but only the DVD was inside. Never had that happen before.The vendor made me return it and they've shipped a new one. / One of my frustrations with incomplete movies was about THE KILLER SHREWS...I really wanted the full opening narration, which i find really creepy....almost every video I found shortened it, or cut it out altogether. It's mostly restored now in bluray editions

      Hi Jay! Thanks for commenting. I just watched the Blu-ray of The Killer Shrews, and it seems to be complete. Freaky movie. I can never look at a dog in quite the same way. You're probably right about the reasons for cutting scenes from the movie. Of course, stopping the movie before it's ending is definitely not acceptable!! I like Hamilton Book Co., but I'm beginning to understand why they can charge such low prices. I also bought a Blu-ray of The King of Comedy. It looks wonderful. But it must been a 2-disc set originally, because there is a list of extra features that aren't on the Blu-ray I purchased. Not complaining, really, because I'm happy to get the film so cheaply. I understand how you feel about the changes in the Mass. There are millions of people who share those feelings. I think you would like this movie. Take care!

      @@grey1951 Mike, I haven't seen King of Comedy in ages but I bought the blu ray a year or two ago and I recall really liking it. Joker sort of treads down the same path as King of Comedy, just a newer film and also, incidentally, has Robert DeNiro in it taking the place of the Jerry Lewis role.

    Ah, I hate to hear stuff like this as it relates to movies. Something similar happened to me with my Apocalypse Now Blu-ray...in that case though it was the audio that just went bye-bye at one point. I hope you get a full version of the film Mike. Have a good one man.

      Hey, thanks for commenting! Sorry to hear about your problem with Apocalypse Now. I guess Blu-rays can be aggravating too sometimes. You would think that by now, so late in the home video game, these problems would have been solved. Oh well, we will survive, my friend. Take care!

  • @maccaphotos

    Well, that nullifies that argument about physical media vs. streaming, that they can edit films streaming and not on physical media. But again, with low budget video companies it all depends on the condition of the print they transfer. I have bought films from low budget companies that actually transferred films from VHS to DVD i.e. Alpha Video, had snippets of commercials in them and some with prints so dark you couldn't even make out the actors faces! Totally frustrating but sometimes that is part of collecting films that are in the public domain.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, you're right, Harry. There are problems with physical media just like with streaming. And I've had some VERY bad prints from different companies, and certainly Alpha Video. Buying from a lot of these companies is always a crap shoot. Isn't collecting a joy??? (Yeah, it is!)

    • @Kubricklover1972
      @Kubricklover1972 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, Harry and Mike, I find Alpha Video to maybe being the crappiest boutique label of them all. It seems to me they have terrible transfers. It looks like they get them from 16mm film. Also, they are a little lazy just adding some classical music to say Nosferatu rather than searching out the scores originally made for the films, or, a new score composed for the film. It's frustrating!

  • @Paneeks1960

    Hi Mike. Do you think that they have to edit their versions because of lawsuits? I remember reading something about these film companies that sell movies without permission. They have to edit them to prevent any kind of repercussions. But then again. After so many years doesn't public domain play a role in it? I don't know. Just sorry to see that you could not get that film in DVD format in its completion~

      Rob, you make a very good point. I think sometimes actors want their scenes cut from certain films or documentaries. I sent away for a DVD copy of a documentary about Judy Garland that originally featured lots of comments from Liza Minnelli. But in this DVD, all her scenes were cut out. There could be many legal reasons why some films are edited. Oh well. I can cope!! Take care, Rob!

    That’s really unfortunate that the film just ends before it truly ends. Hopefully there will be a DVD or Blu-Ray release of this film where the whole film is intact and doesn’t have anything missing. Here’s to one day an uncut version will be released. Hope you’re doing well Mike, have a great weekend and take care!

    Hey Mike! Yeah, that's the case with movies where you don't get the final cut or the director's cut because the distributor wants it shorter. Sometimes I like the longer version. Maybe that's not totally addressing what you are saying here but it's terrible when films are compromised, whether that be a shorter version or a different cut and I just want to say as well, well I... haha!!! lol!!! just kidding!!!!
