      Oh yeah...George Sanders is brilliant in All About Eve! I think he was born to recite that dialog! The term "silver tongued devil" comes to mind.

    Mike, I know I'm going on and on here but I forget to say something. My friend from the UK has sent me blu ray upgrades of films I already have like the first 4 Alien films which look beautiful on blu ray but I also like my Alien box set which has some crazy amount of special features like literally 30 hours or 20 hours of extra features! Absolutely insane! He also sent me the Star Wars original editions like they were shown in the theater on blu ray although I don't mind the doctored versions as well which he can't stand and I can't stand a little bit too. He also sent me some John Woo films from Hong Kong Rescue which are loaded with special features and great transfers after I had trouble getting the Hong Kong Rescue blu rays from Hong Kong Rescue itself which has sort of has a reputation for being incredibly slow such as me waiting 14 months for I think it was the film Hard Boiled. There, I've said I'm going to say for this video. You just bring up such interesting topics for your videos, Mike, so I like talking about them.

      Hey Brian, don't ever apologize for continuing the conversation! I think you're right to keep the DVD sets if they mean something to you and especially if they offer so many extras. I get a little tired of hearing some TH-camrs saying they can no longer stand the look of DVDs. I actually watched a recent video where this guy said he can't understand why anyone would still own DVDs in this day and age. Short-sided attitude, in my opinion.

    I bought Scorsese's Mean Streets and After Hours this B and N Criterion sale after saying I wasn't going to because I own them on DVD in a box set but I thought they might look good on blu ray and might have excellent special features. I got Raging Bull on Criterion blu ray and I own the MGM/UA one signed by Paul Schrader and Cathy Moriarity and I don't know if I should have but I think it might have been for the Criterion special features. My mother, when she was alive, didn't understand why I collected and liked DVDs but when she saw the DVD for Scorsese's Gangs of New York, she was really impressed by Scorsese's commentary, who I think is one of the best commentary directors I've ever heard on any of his films, and seeing him and production designer Dante Feretti on the sets at Cinecitta in Rome she really liked it and likes the film too. She read the book it was based on after she saw the movie. Barbara who? Never heard of her! Just kidding!!! lol!!! Thanks for the video Mike! Happy Holidays! Let me know what you think of the DVD and blu ray whenever you get around to watching them. Please don't place them on your priority list. Just whenever you happen to do so.

      You know, I am very bad at listening to commentaries. And quite often I'll start listening and get bored or distracted very quickly. Some are definitely so much better than others. I like the ones that are more "fan boy" oriented rather than overly technical. Barbara WHO??!!!?? Careful, Brian! Happy holidays to you!!

    It’s cool to see what you’ve upgraded Mike. And with the Criterion sale last month, I upgraded Mean Streets to the 4K Blu-Ray, particularly so that I’d have more special features than the Blu-Ray I had before. Both have great presentations, but all the special features that were included in the Criterion edition are what really made me get the upgrade. It’s not always a necessity, but I think with some films that one enjoys a lot make sense to double dip and upgrade. Though, I do sometimes upgrade and give my older releases to family or friends that I either know will like to own a particular film or at least have some interest in owning a certain film. Thank you for the video Mike, I hope you’re doing well. Take care and have a great day!

      Hi Jared! I'm glad to hear you like the new Mean Streets 4K and all the extra features. it's a very good film. I rewatched it a few days ago and really enjoyed it, although it got a little too bloody at the end. You seem to upgrade for the same reason I do, for the extra features. It's nice of you to give away movies to friends and family. Maybe one day I'll be able to let go of these DVDs that I've replaced! There's really no sensible reason to hold on to them, and I could certainly use the shelf space. Thanks for commenting, Jared. Take care!

    Hey Mike! I've got the blu ray Criterion of Seconds but haven't watched it yet but thanks for whetting my appetite on it! I've seen the original Manchurian Candidate and I think I got the remake for free or a few dollars at the library where I work. I got it because Jonathan Demme directed it and I used to talk to and attend his Rarely Seen Cinema and Saddle Up Saturdays programs at the Jacob Burns Film Center. I started buying blu rays in 2014 when I bought. a flatscreen television but I haven't replaced all of my DVDs, including Criterion ones, with blu rays unless maybe if they become part of the Criterion Collection or there's a version that has more special features and/or more commentaries on it. I've kept two versions of Belle De Jour because there are 2 commentaries on the Criterion one and another commentary on the Miramax one. I also have the Criterion's of Godard's Weekend and Breathless but I've kept the other copies because they have very good commentaries on them. I think I see no reason to replace my DVD Criterion of Seven Samurai to blu ray because I think the film negative might have been slightly damaged sort of and I just don't see what I would gain to have the blu ray of it but for some reason, I guess I just had to buy the blu ray Criterion of Rashomon after having it on DVD Criterion. My 2 go to recommendations to people if they never owned a Criterion would probably be Seven Samurai and The Last Emperor by Bernardo Bertolucci. The Last Emperor has killer special features about the production and the history of the time period that it took place in and a great booklet.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Brian, you really need to watch Seconds as soon as possible!! I've never seen the remake of The Manchurian Candidate, mostly because I can't imagine it being an improvement over the original. But I could be wrong. A friend sent me the remake of Cape Fear a while ago. I'd had no interest in seeing it, but when I watched it, I was blown away by how good it was! Not better than the original, but extremely effective in its own right. So, I need to keep an open mind regarding remakes. As I said in the video, I doubt that I would ever feel the need to replace a Criterion DVD with a Blu-ray. Just don't see any reason to. Thanks for the comments, Brian!

    @bb5468 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I'm guilty of upgrading to Criterion when they release something, for the superior transfers (usually) and special features. I've upgraded to blu ray most everything that I originally had on dvd unless only a dvd is available. Mike I've upgraded The Innocents to blu ray. You're right, in most cases it doesn't matter that much but if the movie is known for it's fantastic cinematography like The Innocents it does make a difference, that black and white cinematography is amazing on the blu ray. Like The Red Shoes, you can turn down the volume and just stare at the screen, it's a work of art.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, I'm sure you're right about the improvement with Blu-rays over DVDs in many cases. Who knows? I may cave in one day and go for upgrading films like The Innocents. I guess I just keep in mind what it was like seeing all these movies on television with imagery that would certainly not be considered pristine, and still falling in love with the movies. I tend to have a relaxed attitude about image quality sometimes. Now, I will admit to grabbing the Blu-ray of Days of Heaven instead of the DVD! So, the Blu-ray virus has definitely taken hold! Thanks for commenting!!

    In my opinion, if you have an older movie on DVD that has extra features on it that the new Blu-ray doesn’t I keep it for that reason. Also, if you have a pretty good Blu-ray player, it’ll convert a DVD and make it look like blu-Ray quality

    • @grey1951

      That's true. I have a DVD of Breathless with a commentary, but there's no commentary on the Criterion. That's just one example.

    I also have multiple copies of some Hitchcock films that I have on Criterion and then I have some of those same films in a Hitchcock box set but I don't feel the need to get rid of both of them. Same goes for my Kubrick box set and Matrix box set. My Kubrick box set is autographed by Tom Cruise and Matthew Modine from Full Metal Jacket and my Matrix box set is signed by Joe Pantoliona, don't know how to spell his name right, who was Cypher in the first Matrix film and has been also in the Wachowski's, the people that made the Matrix, Bound and in Christopher Nolan's Memento all of which are signed by him but I see no reason to replace Memento and Bound. I do have some blu ray Kubrick Criterions which are really nice like a Dr. Strangelove with a manila envelope, a small Russian phrase book or Bible, forget which and top secret papers and a layout of the woman who is Buck Turgison's mistress that you see in the film, sort of like a Playboy Playmate kind of thing. Criterion's, besides their special features, usually have such beautiful artwork on them. My friend, who talked about you recently, makes his own custom sleeves for his blu rays. He's from the UK and doesn't like all the ratings on blu rays and other stuff on them, especially not liking them on UK editions.

    Hi Mike! Upgrading when it comes to format wasn't as much of a thing for me in the past. Now I may do it more simply because I find that there's not much I like out there anymore. I like very few new films these days so I find myself collecting older movies I either don't have or upgrading some i already have. But if I upgrade to Blu ray for example, it's either because it's a cheap price or the blu ray has features that my dvd version doesn't. BUt now I don't get rid of the dvd. because physical media is going away more and more I tend to keep all that i have. As for the Criterions, I do the same thing. The dvds have the same features as the Blu rays so I'd rather just get the dvd, pay less and have more money left to buy extra movies. But here's something I've noticed at least at my Barnes and Noble-there's less and less Criterions on dvd every sale. It's mostly blu ray and it's the same at both my Barnes and Nobles and others that are farther away. Sneaky bastards! Love Robot Monster. I also got that one a coouple of months ago. Should show it in my next haul vid. And I also have that Casablanca. I's a beautiful dvd! Why get rid of it right? Gorgeous box set!!! We collectors are the museum curators of physical media! I think a lot of us on youtube know who Barbara Steel because of you Mike! Ok so a little FYI Mike. A guy made a huge movie donation to my library recently. His son was a big collector and unfortunately he died. My librarian friend told me I could pick whatever I wanted after he separated the films he wanted for the library. Well, he didn't pick many because I wound up with over 7 boxes! And here's the part you'll like-they're mostly film noir and old time gangster movies. Some comedy and tv too but a lot of Cagney and Bogart. Enough for several haul videos! So I think after we get past the holiday madness you'll be seeing some film noir haul vids. And you can tell me if I got some good ones!

      SEVEN BOXES OF MOVIES!!!!!!Oh man...I can't wait for the haul video, Rob! You are so lucky! Glad to know I'm not the only collector who keeps the DVD after upgrading to Blu-ray. For me, it's a sentimental attachment and because I like the covers. I guess physical media is slowly winding down, but I suspect there may be an increased interest going forward. I hope so. I like the idea that we collectors are curators. More and more TH-camrs are talking that way. Well, if I've accomplished nothing else in life (And I really haven't.), maybe I've spread the word about beautiful Barbara Steele! We all have a mission, and I guess that's been mine. Interesting point about seeing more Criterion Blu-rays on the shelves than DVDs. I really haven't noticed that here in my local store. Maybe they're doing it on purpose, or maybe the DVDs tend to sell out faster. I've made the mistake a couple of times of picking up the Blu-ray/4K dual disc releases, which, of course, are more expensive. And then have to exchange them, which the store is happy to do. Thanks for the great comments, Rob!!

    Good to see your Barbara Steele collection. I need to get up to speed as it seems from her filmography I’ve only seen two where she’s uncredited (Sapphire and The 39 Steps) and one where her scenes were deleted (Flaming Star)…oh plus 8 1/2 and Piranha, but none of her main starring roles…..and yes, as I think you know, I have no problem with owning DVDs and most of my Criterions are DVDs

      Hi Neil! You were one of the inspirations for this video along with Jon at Plaidx2. I should have mentioned the two of you. Sorry! After watching your recent haul video where you talked about keeping some DVDs instead of replacing them, and then hearing Jon talk about trying to decide what movies to upgrade, I thought I would jump into the discussion. I just found Barbara's incredibly brief appearance in The 39 Steps a few days ago. She's sitting in the background talking to John Richardson for two hot seconds. You would never know who they were. Someone pointed them out to me. At least in Sapphire she has a lovely closeup and says a few words. Barbara deleted herself from Flaming Star when she walked off the set and then walked out of her contract! I don't know if any footage of her exists, but supposedly there are some still photos of her and Mr. Presley. Thanks for commenting!

    I recently did some upgrading too! I agree with you about Criterion's dvd, that they look great on their own, i guess overall I will buy the bluray, but if it's a title that's really expensive on bluray or out of print I will always go to a dvd copy. It's about the movies at the end of the day anyways.

I know we talked about it a while ago, but I don't think it's a practical idea for me. You're correct in saying it's about the movie, not necessarily the format. I watched a video on YT a few weeks ago where this guy said he couldn't understand why anyone would still have DVDs. And he was deadly serious.
