    For the 1960s it was a great decade for introducing new stars and also a lot of old stars from the 30 40s and 50s. Was their last hurrah in movies.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are 100% correct. It was an amazing time to become familiar with old & new Hollywood. All the old movies were constantly playing on TV. And many of the stars of those movies were still making new movies and doing TV interviews and guest spots. So, we were able to get to know them from both angles. Bette Davis once said that because of television she actually had two careers, because otherwise the younger generation wouldn't have known about her earlier work. That's what is missing in this day and age. The only place young kids can see old movies is on Turner Classic Movies, for the most part, if they have it, and if they have any interest in watching it with all the other 50,000 choices they have. They haven't been exposed to old films, so naturally they don't care.

      Free TV used to play a bunch of these movies back in the 80s 90s then all of a sudden they just stopped. Not just Turner classic movies but AMC before it became commercial used to be the same way classic movies 24 seven. I just got a comment saying they like my latest video but they never heard of any of the movies I talked about lol 😂 young people today

    No new ideas? Back in the VC days you were one of the most creative channels Mike. I still think you operate one of the most honest movie related channels around. I have to tell you once and awhile how much you are appreciated~

      Hey Rob! Thanks so much for the kind words! It's always wonderful to hear from you. My TH-cam life seems to be winding down somewhat, but every now and then I get the spirit and I'm back with my face looking into the webcam. The most important thing for me is all the nice people I've met over the years. Take care, Rob!

    Loved this one Mike. I agree with a lot of that list. For me the best part of the sixties was the early and even mid sixties. Let me throw out a few movies off the top of my head that are not as well known from that time that I love that you may or may not have seen. Two On a Guillotine with Connie Stevens and Dean Jones, just a fun movie. Whistle Down the Wind with Hayley Mills, one of her non Disney films from that time period that she made in England. The Third Secret, another English film, with the fantastic Pamela Franklin. Sundays and Cybele, a beautiful French film that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film 1962, with Hardy Kruger and young Patricia Gozzi, who in spite of making less than a handful of films is in my opinion one of the best young actresses ever. She's simply unforgettable. A few years later in 1965 she made an American film, Rapture with Dean Stockwell, which is also very good. And finally speaking of "Beach" movies, For Those Who Think Young, with James Darren, Tina Louise, Bob Denver, and Nancy Sinatra, who doesn't sing a note and is actually quite charming. Take care Mike.

      Sorry to butt in but just wanted to say great comment. I’m a big fan of Whistle Down The Wind and also Rapture (I did a video a while back on John Guillermin’s filmography, Rapture was his personal favourite)

      Thank you for the comments and especially the recommendations! The only films you mentioned that I've seen are Two On a Guillotine and For Those Who Think Young, both very enjoyable films. I've heard of Whistle Down the Wind, Rapture, and Sundays and Cybele, and I would love to see them. But The Third Secret is one I haven't heard of, even though I love Pamela Franklin. I'll have to add these to my "search and find" list.

    Great to see such a personalised selection. Loads here I’ve not seen and only one crossover with my own list (Blow Up). I had the same experience as you on my first watch. Michael Bartlett on his channel said people might need to see Blow Up 10 times before they love it. Thanks for sharing these favourites and I hope you’ll upload some more.

      Thank you for watching and commenting! I fell in love with Blow-Up on the second watch. But that was 22 years after the first watch! I think I needed to mature a little bit in order to appreciate it. It's another film I can watch and enjoy again and again. I do plan to make more lists. These are fun to do.

    The 1960s were a very good decade for films. There was the beginning of the independent film movement that would go into the 70s with films like Easy Rider, which is excellent, leading the charge regarding up and coming filmmakers and performers who would be able to have prosperous careers in the years to come. There are also some epics like Lawrence of Arabia, which is the opposite of a film like Easy Rider in terms of budget and scope, but still excellent all the same. Also Roger Corman thrived during the decade, giving up and coming directors, actors and actresses opportunities to make their entrance in the film world, like Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola and he reverently passed away, so RIP Roger Corman, the king of B Movies. It’s cool to hear your top 25 films of the 60s Mike, there are a lot of excellent films you chose. I hope you’re doing well, have a great night and take care!

      Hi Jared, and thanks for the comments! You are so right about the 60s being the real beginning of the independent film movement, while at the same time there were so many amazing big studio films. There was just an incredible burst of creative energy in that decade. Difficult to understand why. Maybe the easing of social repression gave writers and directors the courage to take chances. I certainly didn't understand any of this when it was happening. It was just the world I lived in. When I look back on it now, I'm amazed, and a little overwhelmed by everything that was going on. Not all of it was good. But, again, it was the world I lived in. We all have to deal the hand we're given. Take care!!

    Incredibly Strange Creatures - yup, you lost me :P 8 1/2 would be on my list, for sure. I never found 2001 slow, either. And sometimes, just like I don't know what a song is about, but like it, same with some movies.

      Well Kris, I would have tagged you as an Incredibly Strange Creatures fan for sure! You make a very good point about not always understanding a song or a movie. I still don't know the lyrics to songs I love from the old days because it's so hard to make them out. But I love them anyway. Last night I rewatched Eraserhead. How in the world is anyone supposed to understand a weird film like that? I had a great time watching it!

    It's a toss-up for me between the 50s and 60s for my favorite film decade. I surprisingly only own 6 of the ones you showed my favorite being splendor. The sadist is definitely better than it's gotten credit for. I think I've said this before on here, but i love all those teen 60s movies where the boys are gidget girl happy beach party I'll mention Diamond head because no one ever does. I just picked up one from kino called for those who think young i haven't seen in like 5 years. It should be fun. Great list Mike

    Haven,t delved into the beach movie craze having only recently watching Gidget I’ll give it a go. Audrey is my favorite but that one never appealed to me. Kiss of the Vampire is excellent. The Skull is new to me I’ll be sure to try and find a copy. The incredibly Strange Creatures has such a cool movie poster I need that too. I almost got Pretty Poison when Twilight Time went out of business now I have regrets. I agree Natalie Wood could do no wrong she’s a close 2nd to Audrey. I have 2001 on 4k it’s a beautiful picture I’ve only seen it once and I don’t understand the love for it aside from the technical aspects. Rosemary’s Baby is great still trying to get the criterion. Finally picked up Easy Rider it’s really great Backtrack directed by Hopper and stars Jodie Foster might make you change your mind about his directing (I like the film but it’s not great) never the less still a great actor . Great video my friend.

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have Backtrack, but still haven't watched it. I highly recommend Dennis Hopper's Out of the Blue, which he also stars in. Some of his very best work. I think you will appreciate The Skull, and definitely Pretty Poison if you get a chance to see them. You mentioned Gidget. It's actually a terrific little movie, not only entertaining, but with a serious side as well. Sandra Dee was a very talented, sensitive actress. Her career seemed to peak very early, and she never made it big as an adult star, even though she had the ability. Natalie Wood and Tuesday Weld managed to make that transition. The Incredibly Strange Creatures is probably my favorite guilty pleasure! Thanks for commenting!

    Hi Mike. Thanks for stepping out of the coffin for a brief bit of sunlight. A great and fun list, I’ve added a Cold Day in August to my watchlist. I really liked Pretty Poison and wish there was a blu ray of the other Weld/Perkins movie, Play It As It Lays. It was only in recent years that I learned HAL in 2001 got its name for being each of the letters before IBM, very clever.

    Hi Mike! I know the feeling. For me it was the 80's. Well, actually mid 70's to mid 80's I guess. I've been working my way through them80's by genre for years now! I discovered the Beach movies in the 70's and Annette Funicello! Love it! I even liked Back to the Beach. I know of The Unforgiven but I can't believe I haven't seen it yet. I believe I have it somewhere. Great stars. A cold wind in august! Yeah, no, never heard of it. But you had me at stripper! Oh yeah Kiss of the Vampire! Can't go wrong with Hammer! I've heard The Skull is very good. Ok I think you've mentioned Incredibly Strange Creatures before and I'm very curious! West Side Story, my third favorite musical of all time! Natalie Wood one of my big crushes! I oved her in Sex and the single girl, The Great Race and Inside Daisy Clover. 8 and a half confused me. I think I may need to watch it again. I may be too literal. 2001? Open the pod bay doors Mike. Rosemary...creepy. Still haven't seen Easy Rider. I'll watch anything with Vincent Price! Great list Mike!

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, I hereby challenge you to see Easy Rider, A Cold Wind in August, and The Skull. WE can leave The Incredibly Strange Creatures, etc. for another time. Don't feel bad about being confused by 8 1/2. I think Fellini was confused when he made it, and the effect rubs off on the audience! That's why I feel more than one viewing is necessary to really "get" it. I also love Inside Daisy Clover, and I think it's underrated. It bothers me that Natalie Wood doesn't seem to get the respect she deserves for her acting abilities. OK, rant over! Thanks for commenting, Rob!

    This is going to be a controversial comment, but I think Rosemary’s baby is over rated . I only watched it because Patsy Kelly was in it . The story did not scare me or disturbed me or send shivers down my spine. When I was watching it, it was just there. 😂

    • @grey1951
      @grey1951  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, if that's your honest opinion, then I respect it. It's all subjective. I read the novel before seeing the movie, so I knew everything that was going to happen. And the movie STILL blew me away. And still does.
