    I just got a used Harley LiveWire as my first bike and I'm excited for it. I have already ridden it around parking lots and out on the road. So far I've been keeping it in rain mode to ease the throttle and power. This is honestly a very comfortable motorcycle. My commute to work on it and around town is where I think the range is the best. I only charge it about once a week and have been getting easily over 100 miles from it.

      @@gregorycaldwell3721 it’s going really well! Even though I bought it used, it was still less than 1k miles. Now I crossed that, I was able to perform the 1k service myself. There was actually an oil change involved. The oil is only there to lubricants the gearbox. I’ve become way more comfortable riding and it’s so enjoyable on the LiveWire. It’s closest to the feeling of flying because of the quiet motor. No regrets getting my motorcycle license and buying the LiveWire 5 months later!

      @@sf6ftw833 it technically can, but the rear passenger has to be small. The rear seat is only about 6 inches. There are foldable passenger foot pegs so it’s intended to have a rear passenger, but there’s not much room lol.

    2 major changes that would make me buy this without a second thought - 1: 10k cost. 2: weight reduction. I love this, but I can't justify the cost at this point.

      Speaking 2 years later on this subject, and electric bikes are still stupid expensive, I’d say with modern bike prices, 15k and 50 pounds lighter and you have a really cool bike for the price, given it’s an ev it is hard to bring the price down that much

    I've logged over 18k on my LiveWire before deciding to trade it in. I think there is a little too much emphasis on the weight. It isn't the issue. the last thing you want on the highway is crosswinds moving you. The battery tech is the issue, lithium-ion takes too long to recharge, even with level 3 supported by the bike. The LiveWire makes for a fantastic daily commuter. But once you've ridden around town and want to venture further, the 45+ minute recharging eats into your riding time for those longer trips. I'm crossing my fingers on solid state batteries to change that. Outside of that, the LiveWire is fantastic, acceleration, braking, handling, well balanced and zero vibration....butter smooth.

    That 95 mile (claimed) highway range is a deal killer. Might be ok for a commute to work bike where you can charge it while you work, but for a weekend fun machine, big nope.

      Yeah man a bike with under 150 mile range is a deal killer for me even in a gas powered machine... on electric with that kind of charge time it's an absolute no-go... In California that's the equivalent of driving from LA to San Diego one way and you're done for 12 hours? WEAK

      @@Zelcore37 Is the highway range on the Ego+ 123 miles? I saw on their site "extra-urban" which I assume means highway. Thinking out loud since I am trying to decide on Energica and LiveWire, the LW seems to be about 95 to 100 miles, and the Ego+ is a nice 23 to 28 miles more on a charge.

    I'm hoping that there's some major leaps in battery capacity technology for EV's like this in the near future. The weight tradeoff for a motorcycle makes these a very hard sell at the moment, plus the lack of charging infrastructure in the majority of america. That being said, still a cool bike, and while I won't be getting one, it's still inspiring me to eventually make my own electric motorcycle down the road

      Not just battery capacity though. To make these bikes competitive they need every technology we can throw at them. All the composite materials and all the new battery and motor technology

      If they could give 160 miles in sport mode and 250 in leaf at 20k I would never even consider riding a gas motorcycle again.

      It's the weight that I couldn't live with. If it were sub 400 lb and $15,000 I'd buy one to complement my California made electric car. Still prices continue to drop and the gravimetric energy density of the cells that make up an EV battery continues to increase so there is a fair chance at some time in the future I'd buy a full size electric motorbike (electric push bikes have already reached that point for me).

    The claimed torque number for electric vehicles is usually at the wheel because their flywheel numbers aren’t as impressive as acceleration stats would lead you to believe. That’s probably the root of the difference in claimed numbers between the Zero and Livewire.

    Yammi needs to get his hands on a energica ribelle. As far as price on these goes wait another 4 to 5 years for the 4680 lfp batteries to filter down to the lower use cases.
    Prices will come down to a more manageable level.

      The Big 4 (Plus KTM) have agreed to develop a modular common battery pack that will be serviceable and intergangeable between the brands
      Once batteries get to a neccisary power density; this future will be real

    I think they'll be able to make something like this at a sub-$15k price point after the R&D is paid off and they transplant a lot of the same tech into a different bike. Probably in 5-7 years or so is my guess.

    My concern is they are too quiet. I went from a too loud Harley to a too quiet new Kawasaki, and I Had way too many close calls from drivers. so I put on a slightly louder exhaust, which does help, even though I liked it quiet. Nonetheless, the electrics are very appealing. Food for thought when you shop. Just be safe out there.

      But in SW Michigan they keep the roads in decent condition. I can’t wait until they complete the repairs on I-69 to Lansing- then it will be smooth sailing all the way up north:-)

    I bought this - from probably the same two dudes from the Malibu experience center! Just got it delivered 6 hours ago. So psyched! And the roads you rode on in this video are my favorite canyon jaunts. If there was one bike specifically built just to coast down the PCH, this is it. Also, a small correction: the Livewire takes 1 hour to fully charge on Level 3 (not 1.5 hours), but they recommend charging to only 80% which is 40 mins.

      @@mychannel9403 I love that there is minimal sound and no gears. So much more fun, more connected with the road and surroundings and senses are much more heightened. Going through wind feels like flying versus the numbing from loud sounds. Same like the faster Tesla models, where that speed + silence is even more thrilling than speed + traditional noise. I also ride electric skateboards (high speed ones in the 60 MPH range) and my silent direct drive motors are so much more pleasing during acceleration than my straight cuts or belt drives.

    HD killed Alta and their electric dirt bikes that are STILL in the top 5% of current dirt bike tech even 4 years after the fact. HD doesn't deserve to make any money off of EV, they shafted us out of some of the best EV motorcycle tech we could've gotten and now they want to overcharge for their stuff all over again like they have been for the past 3 decades.

      It's all business, they did that so they could make this company and charge ridiculous prices (like they still are).

    Since you mentioned how much you liked the ride, not having to think about shifting but just getting to enjoy the ride, would this make you a little more agreeable to automatics moving forward? Not having to worry about shifting and being able to enjoy the ride more is the biggest selling point for automatics.

In the past he had been "against" automatics and thought people should still learn and test on manuals. My viewpoint is why should I have to learn how to ride something I'm never going to ride. If I know I'll never want to drive manual, why should I have to? So I was just wondering if enjoying the ride on this changed his anti-automatic stance any.

    This is a review that I didn't expect and knowing what your thoughts on the Zero were , I am sort of surprised the two of you liked them.
    I bought a Livewire in August last year and there are a few more cons , probably the biggest that the servicing interval is the same as other Harleys and isn't that cheap.
    The dealer also changed the brake fluid on the first service (for $20) , I have the bike in eco/range mode (leaf mode) most of the time.
    You can display widgets on either side of the dash , but they turn off when the bike is switched off so you have to set them each time you ride the bike.
    The stand has a serrated bottom that can grab on rough pavement and not lock in place properly & the bike tends to roll forward on the stand on level ground.
    Despite the cons I think it's a great bike , it's a shame they didn't bring out the Bronx.

    Here it comes: I do think y’all will like the 2022 Energica Ego or Ribelle. Quick hits: 140 miles of range at 70 mph, more if city miles. 0-80% charge in ~35 mins. Big jump in power.

    I noticed you guys stated the cost of filling up an ICE bike with gasoline several times, but no one ever mentions the actual cost of each charge of these EV's. That thorough comparison would really help to put cost of ownership into perspective.

      This would need to include the cost of maintaining the combustion engine to be meaningful at all. And that is a lot of different items, fluids, labor costs, and they vary wildly by region and skill of the owner to do it themselves.
      Overall, fuel savings is a big part of the running cost advantage of electric vehicles, but their lack of labor and maintenance intensive components is a huge part.
      And then there's the finite lifespan of the battery to offset it in the long run. You can take any Harley from the 1970s that has been sitting in a (dry) garage since then and get it up and running with a modest amount of money and labor. A battery of today's best technology will last many years, or a decade probably, but if you are in 2050 and find a 2022 Livewire in a garage, it will probably be impossible to get it into drivable condition.

I think there's enough publication out there now to get an idea for maintenance costs (or lack thereof) and battery life and their cost to replace. I just really wanted to know the day to day cost of running the bike. I can look at my own utility bills and get an idea of cost per kW hour vs how much the battery holds on a charge, but I mainly wanted to know what the cost is at a quick charge station since 12.5 hours to charge at home is a bit out of the question.

      Most Electric motorcycle review cited like 10 cent per kWh, so times the amount of battery capacity and you get your price. Just like electric stove, electric vehicles are stupidly cheap to fill.

      @@victoriazero8869 I think that's just a national standard value though, the "green energy" places you'll see with chargers are going to charge WAY more. Tesla charges $0.25/kwh, so its 2.5x that estimate and I'd bet that's going to be on the lower side.

    What is this? A positive, no, dare I say glowing review of a Harley Davidson designed and built motorcycle from the arch nemesis of all things MoCo? Shocking! Just shocking! I must say the electric bike experience looks so incredibly unique and out of the box with the instant power, the low hum of the motor, the stealthy nature of it all. I kinda want one. No shifting, no gears, no clutch! Yet engine braking is still a thing? If it was 16-18k I would probably get one. If, but it’s not. It’s 22k plus whatever the dealership piles on top of that. At that price I’m a hard no thanks. Especially considering the inherent problems that are unique to electric, battery powered, motorcycles. Range, weight, and charge-ability.

    Its not a huge savings over gas: Using Tesla's price of $0.25/kWh, and assuming battery near empty (it will take more charge than it stores since batteries are not perfect but we'll assume perfect battery), so at 15.5kwh battery that's $3.88 for a fill up, and that's apparently only good for 95 highway miles (which is about 2 gallons on a sport bike with more HP though similar enough). It doesn't seem to be hugely cheaper, but if you use the 12.5 hour charging at home you'd only pay a little over half that.
    Its an improvement, but not as much as some people might hope or think it is. A lot of people don't put that many miles on bikes (and those that do enjoy super long trips, probably don't want to stop and charge every hour and a half of highway miles), so its a niche case. I think the coolest thing is probably the silence (unfortunately Harley guys like the noise and the engine vibrations between their legs, just replace that with a seat vibrator and call it a day). There is just something cool about zipping through the trees near silent, feels a bit like you're flying (either pedaling fast or casually on an ebike, its really fun, dangerous because no noise, but fun)

      The silence thing - I could imagine it feeling very Ninja-like. In fact come to think of it that would be a perfect name for an electric sportbike, too bad it's already used for a line of gasoline sportbikes. I've even heard of police departments being interested in electric motorcycles (I think in discussions with Alta before Harley killed them) for their stealth capability.

      @@saynotop2w He mentioned that, estimated it would cut the cost in half. I'm guessing it would still be much cheaper than his estimates, especially if you have time-of-day electricity rates (I think that's becoming more common) and charging at night or whenever electricity is cheapest. Charging up an electric motorcycle at home would probably cost only a few cents. You'd also save on stuff like oil changes, and if the regenerative brakes are good you'd not need brake pads as often, but those are pretty insignificant in overall cost of ownership. Tires would be similar to a gas bike of similar power and weight (though Teslas eat through tires very quickly, I'm guessing a combination of their power and weight). For cost-comparison you could probably just assume charging it doesn't cost anything but all other costs (tires, insurance, maintenance, etc - the maintenance would be cheaper but that would compensate for ignoring electricity costs) are the same. With such, even at the current cost of gas, it would take a long time to make up for the difference in cost of this versus a comparable gas bike, especially a used one. Most people interested in saving money with an electric motorcycle - which I envision as being the lowest-cost possible commuter - could save even more with an economical used bike. Like my Suzuki GZ250 that I paid $1200 for and gets 70+ MPG, but is slow as hell.

    trust the engineering and design teams
    they've made all of the bikes we love today. but with a new platform comes new challenges. think about how long it took to get bikes as dialed in as they are today, look at all the history and experimentation involved.
    electric bikes are in their infancy right now, and they've got a long road ahead of them, but trust that we'll be able to build character and a unique experience into them over time
    fret not, fellow riders, we'll have the good shit soon

    Although I’m extremely happy to be back in Texas, I do miss the riding locations that California has. My favorite road was the road y’all rode on. I’d ride that road then hit up Neptune’s Net on the PCH in Malibu. Which is also the same restaurant featured in the first Fast and the Furious film after they rebuilt the Supra and raced the black Ferrari.

      I don't know where in Texas you are, but Texas has a LOT of great twisty, hilly roads. You just have to know where they are. But even here in North Texas, I can leave my house and ride 30 minutes south and it's a HUGE playground of twisty two lane roads with almost zero traffic, and plenty of beautiful rolling hills and countryside for miles and miles. We make a day of it, and sometimes find a place to spend the night. The only problem though, if you're riding a Livewire, is you'd run out of juice before lunch, then you're done for the day. You might have to get a friend to follow in his truck, so he could haul the bike back home for a re-charge.

    A buddy got one like a year ago, he loves it. One to watch for sure given my local riding environment but the range stuff seems scarier on a bike vs an electric car.

      I was going to comment and say this too. The 2022 Eva Ribelle and Eva Ribelle RS are in a category of their own when it comes to electric motorcycles. They’ve found a way to increase 0-60 acceleration, increase range and get better charging (both fast and regular AC) all while decreasing total weight. I also love the look of them. I preordered one and can’t wait to get it. The cost is a hard pill to swallow but hey electric bikes combine two of my passions, motorcycles and tech!

    EV tech is ALMOST where we need it to be. I would want atleast 3hrs worth of riding for the simple fact that chargers are few and far between in some areas and. I do HVAC and as soon as they can get 250 miles or so out of a charge in the pickups/vans that will be the route we take forsure. Glad to see Harley have a solid EV option other than just slapping something together.

    Lads, your info on charge time is way out.
    The charge delivery is higher on a stage 3 when the battery is low. So you can go from 10% battery to 70% battery in 25-26 minutes. The last 30% takes longer.
    You can do 0% - 80% in 40-45 minutes.
    0% to 100% in 60-65 minutes.
    I know this because if I am doing a long run I charge to 70% and go again, only stopping for 20 -25 minutes each time.

    20% to 80% charge is only 30mins. Still not keeping up with gas bikes on a road trip, but for about every hour on the road it’s 30 minutes of charging. In my opinion, that makes road trips possible.

    This was a very interesting video the riding position seems abit restricted with the legs at the rear i would much prefer the pegs in the middle of the bike and on the point on reducing the price making it more if a desirable bike I definitely agree with $18,000-$17,000 which would definitely appeal to me in the UK

    If Harley did pay you this would make a little more sense. You say it's a good bike, fair enough. But once you look at weight, price and range there are a bunch of qualifiers that matter to many viewers/riders.
    Still a generation (or two) of tech advancements and price drops required to make this relevant to most discussions.

      @@nilswinkelmann9640 Swappable batteries will likely never be a thing for full sized bikes, the batteries are just too large and integral to the chassis to make any swapping system realistic. Better to just work on improving charge times. They likely will never be quite as quick as filling a tank of gas but could probably get close enough to not matter much.

    I understand all this electric scooters, electric motorcycle it’s all about saving gas I get it you guys solved that. Here’s my another concern. Since it’s electric cars don’t hear you but, you’re there. For safety can they put speakers with module with different sounds of motorcycles so that cars they know you’re there. I hope they thought about that.

    Yep, I got a black H-D LW and LOVE it, bought it at a discount.
    Yes, it rides great as a naked sport bike. I use a custom mode and get better milage, too.
    However, I am going to be moving out of the USA next year and have to sell it. 😢

      I think $1000 per kWh battery. $15,500 for a 15.5kWh system would be more reasonable. Oh, my LW & my Zero cost less than $30/mo to charge at home and at a charge station. I do mostly charge at home. I plan to ride from SF Bay to Paso Robles on my bike(s) as a charging challenge some day. I invite either of you guys to go with me.

    I have one of the bikes labelled as an ebike. Emmo Zone GTS. Been looking into either going for a full on, or going with one the bigger electric motorcycles. One of the things I've figured out, real quick, is that the greatest part of the cost is the batteries. I would imagine that the batteries on that thing are probably really good lithium, and that is a main part of the high costs. Of course, I'd also expect better for the size of it.

    You guys keep comparing to „Zero“ but I think you guys are comparing to the Zero SR/F. I personally find the ergonomics of the SR/F strange and yes the bike feels limited electronically.
    I own a Zero FXS and absolutely love that bike (ever since I found the right suspension setting for me).
    I like the fact that you guys mentioned the different ride feeling within EV, cause every EV has it‘s own riding characteristics just as on a gas bike.
    I hope gas bikes will still be around until the day I die but I don’t want to miss my E Motorcycle either.

    In my Nissan Leaf EV... there are two levels of regen available, one with the eco button ( which also limits motor output, but provides increased braking anytime you want it.. and the B ( braking mode) which gives you much heavier regen braking. I live in the california hills, with more twisties than this malibu run... and to both obtain better safer braking ( akin to down shifting) and to maximize charge.. i have learned to actively use both...and have told Nissan that these two functions should be paddles on the "gear shift"... and on a bike.. they should be a button or paddle easier to use than the high beam switch.. to obtain the kind of performance and safety we are used to with ICE motors. Full time braking mode is annoying because one of the ways you get range advantage and smoothness in an ev is COASTING... which is lost totally in the brakine ( or single pedal mode used in tesla an newer nissans). Controlability is the name of the game especially on 2 wheels. and fast control of regen braking give it.

    You guys should include the new federal tax rebate on motorcycles from 10%-30% and $7500 in the price (not applicable on ICE bikes of course), so $22k-30%=$15400. In CA subtract an additional $1500 for total price of $13900 which sounds lot more competitive than $22k

    These hairdryers have been around for years and are basically mobility scooters on steroids. The unmistakable sound of a Harley is what sets the bike apart from all other competitors. Take that away, limit the range to trips to Walmart, and what are you left with? A milk cart basically.

    When are you going to do a comparison between the LIVEWIRE Delmar S2 and the Verge TS Ultra? I am looking to buy an electric motorcycle soon and I am impressed with the breakthrough technology and range of the Verge (even though it is significantly higher in price.

    I really like the idea of an electric motorcycle and cars too but prices need to come down on both or there need to be better incentives (maybe $5K-7500 tax rebate off an E-cycle would work). I'm OK with 95 mile range for the short rides I do or just jump on the bike to ride into town to pick up something small but I know many riders will not be OK with that and there are not going to be fast chargers along the way where many riders go. I hope they figure out the solid state battery tech they are working on and when they do I think you will see a big surge of electric vehicles - then we will need to generate more power affordably. Thanks for the video, I'd like to see more E-cycle vids in the future and really liked this one.

    Hey guys... how much do you think a BMW K-75 or K-100 weighs ? Or any other sport tourer with this amount of horse power an torque. Just the same. Range anxeity comes from not knowing your machine. When you do, you know how to plan, you know how to manage, you know how to read the battery percentage and convert that into available range.. because you know your machine. Now who has never changed the bars on a bike to get the ergonomics that fit your body and riding preference. Granted these are really seriously stupid bars.. but bar-backs and different shaped bars are common as ticks in the woods. Try some. Re-position the foot pegs.. also often done. Price... it's all economies of scale.. make more they cost less. They can make this for $12K . If BMW made this the price would be no problem... with only some ergonomic changes that are bars, seats and pegs. I love to hate harley's, but I'm getting the idea this is damn good e-bike. Good news, if they are like Electric Cars they loose half thier value fast.. and that is the time to buy...because the untold secret.. is they are million mile vehicles.. with very little maintenance cost or effort beyond tire and brakes.

    I would like to see how much battery % one of these would get from 5-10 minutes on a fast charger. It would be the equivalent of stopping for $5 worth of gas but also, batteries charge way faster for the lower 80% than it does to top it off from 80% up, a lot of batteries charge all the way to 80% in like an hour. Would like to see how much distance you can get from a "quick" ten minute recharge or even a 20 to 30 minute "lunch stop" charge.

    Level 3 charging is the fastest type, yall mean level 1. Level 2 (drier outlet) could charge it in an hour with the right setup, assuming the bikes can take it. I doubt they can take lvl 3, but if they can that'd be like 10-15 minutes or less depending on the components.

      Level 1 and level 3 only charging on the live wire. No level 2 charging. Reasons I’ve heard is level 2 charging would require more equipment on it and make it even larger/heavier

    Last autumn before putting my old Katana away for the winter I paid $45.00 to fill it with Shell V-Power (Vancouver BC) and it wasn't completely empty. It would be maybe $50.00 - $55.00 now, so an electric might make good sense for around the city or the odd (short) trip outside the city, but I'd sure hate to try to take one for any distance.

    By the time you hit 100,000 miles in an oil head bmw.. you have spent many many thousands of dollars on service like spline lubes that split the bike in half... more than once.. on this bike.. you aint gonna spend didly... untill you need a new battery.

    I'm still going to stick with gas bike but the evoke 6061 power Cruiser seems to be the best because the other electric motorcycles I saw were 80 and 100 thousand dollars I still won't pay $24,000 for an electric motorcycle but this thing gets 292 miles to a charge and it charges to 80% in 15 minutes which is a hell of a lot better than those damn Harleys

    I wish they gave us the numbers on the bike's actual range. How many miles vs % of charge left. Did they try any SoCal freeways? I 've found every Ebike' s manufacturer claimed ranges are bogus.
