Great video! Camera angles and lighting help us to clearly see what's happening, the science lesson is very helpful, and the video is nice and concise. I look forward to more videos from you!
Subbed and liked. It's nice to see someone doing very straight forward videos without all the usual bull about here's a panel clip this is what it looks like, here is all my friends yelling in the background. Keep up the vids I have a 20 si and I will eventually mod but for now I am enjoying having a warranty.
I'm surprised the car doesn't need a tune. As for larger diameter piping, it can move more air, but it will do so at a lower velocity. With a small, mildy tuned motor the latter matters. As the inlet/outlet sizing is essentially the same as stock, the transition to larger diameter piping can and will cause turbulence. Not great, either. I'm not familiar with this platform. FWIW, in the CT9A Evolution world we found that the UICP does nothing for performance in any configuration, and that the LICP can brings some small gains on a highly tuned motor.
Your right also with larger pipes you would need a larger turbo I would just leave the stock piping and a Intercooler would be perfect on the stock turbo
Does upgrading the charge pipes and inner cooler require a tune? like if you were putting a cold air intake in? My inner cooler is in pretty bad shape and i need a replacement but i dont have a ktuner yet. Not trying to put a new intake and inner cooler on until im ready for a tune if its needed. Thanks in advance
Thanks for your question fantomfury! If you're just looking for a factory replacement for now, the charge piping and intercooler won't require a tune, but don't expect much in the way of additional power without one. You'll really notice the benefit later once you get a ktuner.
@RicksGarage appreciate your reply, I just bought a ktuner, should be here Tuesday or Wednesday along with the intake and intercooler. I'm excited, not necessarily for more power but to actually be doing mods right for once😅🤣 in the past when I was younger I'd just slap intake exhaust on anything and call it good.
Loving it - on the dyno, it made a huge difference in dropping temps. Only regret was timing - shortly after buying this kit, Prl released their v2 which has billet end caps and diverters
Hi Lucas - thanks for your question! According to PRL, this intercooler can be run on a stock tune. I'm not sure about local emissions (Cali?) I'd double check with PRL directly.
awesome project, I have a 10th gen as well but haven't done any MODs to it yet... I am making a list of things to do when the time comes and so far what you have done has been everything I've been considering, my main goal with the car is to make it as light as possible but keeping the daily use of it...but i was wondering what made you go with the PRL when we have many others out on the market?
Hi Felix - thanks for your comment! At the time of purchase, there were a few less intercooler kits available - I was waiting for the 27Won offering but it wasn't ready yet. I ended up with the v1 PRL cooler (the v2 has built-in diverters) because IIRC, the charge piping was the largest diameter available. Currently I think the toss-up would be between the v2 PRL and the 27Won kits.
Hi Linn, You should be able to get the intercooler directly from PRL on their website - prlmotorsports.com/products/2016-honda-civic-1-5t-intercooler-upgrade-kit I would think most speed shops can help you out if you're not comfortable doing the install yourself. It's a great upgrade!
@@RicksGarage ok, for now I have a muffler / resonator delete, with 2.5 pipes. It feels like more power, Dual exhaust , a civic hatchback 10th gen. It has turbo charged engine
Was curious, by increasing the size of the intercooler, would it be blocking air flow to the radiator core? The immediate gain here is cooler intake air but will coolant temps increase due to less air flow to the radiator core?
An excellent question Lucas! I would imagine that there would be a very small reduction in airflow to the rad as the new intercooler is slightly taller and the air would be slightly hotter once it reaches the radiator. So far I haven't seen any major differences on the temp gauge, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it once it hits the track. That being said, I think the airflow can probably be improved by driving faster! 😆
Hi Keldon - thank you for your question - the actual wrench time was pretty long because of the filming, but someone with a decent mechanical knowledge and some good hand tools can get this job done in an afternoon.
@@RicksGarage just got mine finished, took a very capable master tech about 3 and a half hours to do the intercooler and a PRL Cobra intake at the same time, probably would take him 2 and a half without the intake

Nice video. Going to do that soon preferably after winter. Where did you buy it in Canada?

I ordered it through Corey @ twostepperformance.com. They're based somewhere in the US

Are the outlet and inlet of that intercooler 3” for both sides? It looks massive
I believe the piping size is 2.5" but you're right- it certainly is massive

Would've been the 27Won for sure but it was still under development when I was ready for an intercooler
