    I love my G1X, too. The design, shape, the grip and the metal body are fantastic as soon as you hold it onto your hand. The lens is limited but the image quality is really good, sharpness and colour. I thought you didn't mention that it couldn't produce good bokeh, nor can it do good macrophotography.

    When talking about your wishes for the “ideal” G1X lens, you are describing a lens Sony RX100m3 =)

    I recently bought this camera used. I normally shoot with Olympus, but I wanted something with more saturated colours to use for scenic photography. I also wanted a compact and was not interested in a DSLR. And, believe it or not, I really like a straight optical viewfinder. The g1x has it all for me and I am quite satisfied. I wonder if the newer canon Eos M50 is really that much better.

    I bought this camera new about 2013. My main pain point is video. Exposure compensation doesn’t work in video. It is all auto. To get a true hybrid compact I had to downgrade to a Canon G3X.
    Having said that I used the G1X mainly for bodybuilding shows to do quick social media updates. I’ve had multiple photos taken with it published in national magazines, newspapers and TV shows. It’s not perfect but for its size got some great shots with it. I prefer it for photos over the G3X and it’s 1 inch sensor.
    Now I am picking it up again to play around with flash exposure compensation which I didn’t know existed as there wasn’t a dedicated button like on a Nikon DSLR. You have to go through the menu to adjust the power setting. If I can master that then this will be my cheap version of a Fuji X100VI that seems popular but will a decent zoom lens.

    I love my G1x. The large sensor helps reduce the depth of field over something similar in size.
    Video is poor in my opinion as the sound is so poor. But as a camera for photos alone it's hard to beat. Even now. As a travel camera it's brilliant. Not as flexible as a bridge camera but much better images.

    Thank you so very much for posting this, it has been a tutorial for me as I was gifted one and with no instructions and have been taking pictures on auto willy-nilly but wanting more, your take on it has opened my eyes to its potential and now I know more, still trying to figure out how to shoot it in B&W, haven't found a setting for that yet, but until now I did not even to know how the back ring-thing worked, or that the screen flips around, been helluva learning curve and I think I really like this camera :) Cheers from the great PNW and a new sub for ya!

      Wow, I am glad that you found my video helpful, thank you so much for watching and for the kind words, really means a lot! Regarding the black and white mode, if you access the "Picture Style" settings (which can also be found in both the menu and the quick menu), you can then navigate through different picture styles until you see "Monochrome", which is the black and white picture style setting. I hope that helps. I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)

    TH-cam recommended that I watch this video, so I did! 🙂
    One of my cameras is the first generation PowerShot G1X, purchased new back in 2013. I seldom use it and it was an impulse purchase, since the Canon distributor gave it a hefty discount. The G1X's specifications look impressive on paper but in real life use it's only good for still subjects and landscape photography. Its AF performance is slow in decent light and progressively worsens in low light situations. That lens could have really started at 24mm instead of 28mm, and 112mm @ f/5.8 at the telephoto end is already too slow for portraiture shots.
    There's also the problem of light leak, coming from one of the lens barrel rings. You can't see it on the rear LCD display, unless you cover the lens with a cap and point the camera towards a strong light source, like the bright sky with the ISO set to Auto. I'm not sure if this light leak is significant enough to affect the calculated exposure though. Close up macro performance leaves this camera a lot to be desired. I often forget that the G1X won't focus closely unlike my other PowerShot compacts, including the G12 and the G7X Mark II.
    I think the G1X was a hurried project at the time this camera design was conceived and the zoom lens was more than an afterthought for Canon's new 1.5" type CMOS sensor. It didn't stay long on the market and was superseded by the improved G1X Mark II.
    As a travel camera, the first generation G1X isn't something as snappy like the PowerShot G5X/G7X/G9X series with the smaller 1" sensor. It is capable of taking really good images but it's not a quick draw, shoot-and-scoot type of camera. I get poor results quite often if I don't give this camera the time it needs to auto-focus properly and it's not that forgiving for a point-and-shoot camera.
    In my experience, I used my G7X Mark II for traveling more frequently instead of the G1X. The latter may have a larger 1.5" type sensor but its sensor size advantage is quickly outweighed by the G7X Mark II's much quicker AF, closer macro focusing, continuous burst plus shallow DoF capability.

      It is true that the G7X focuses better, is more agile, is much lighter and more comfortable in hand. The only disadvantage that is quite noticeable with the G1X is the image quality, especially if it is necessary to do some cropping to frame.
      I had both cameras but unfortunately the G1X had the zoom flex cable cut, something that is very common in several series of the G line. The other problem with this type of camera is that you cannot access the sensor without disassembling the entire camera and since they are not sealed cameras, dust can be a problem. Maybe the M43 makes more sense.

    I had the G1MKII but unfortunately the zoom flex cable was cut. I later learned that it is a common problem in several G series models. And it is not an easy repair because to change the flex cable you have to disassemble the entire camera. The same if you eventually want to clean the sensor due to dust. I also had the G7X and it turned out to be a faster, more agile camera, with a focus that almost never failed but the image quality compared to the G1X was noticeably inferior.
    I finally replaced this type of camera because M43 bodie and lenses, I maintain a compact size, I can clean the sensor if necessary, I can change optics and there are sealed bodies that withstand abuse better.

    do u think the g1x is better than the g16?

    • @TProfileG
      @TProfileG ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The big sensor on the g1x allows a small depth of field similar to the fast lens on the g16. So it's very close between the two. I prefer the g1x but the g16 would be my second choice. Both work great.

    i used my battery today and it only lasted 2 hours i dont know why

    • @iggytse
      @iggytse 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The G1X mark 1 was power hungry. I needed 3 batteries for 1 full day of shooting at stage events. Actually in the early days I only had 2 batteries and I took the charger with me. When the first battery went flat I charged it and used the second battery then by the time the first battery was fully charged I would do a swap again.

    G1x vs g16....which one?

    • @DavidCuhls
      @DavidCuhls  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For reliability, lowlight, tough built and the articulating screen, I'd go for the G1x. However, for the colours, speed, autofocusing system, video and overall versatility, I'd go for the G16. So it really depends on your priorities on which priorities matters more to you. :-) I hope that helps, I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting! :-)
