MP-60 Ginrai is the end of the Masterpiece toy line, but will it scale?
An in-depth look and reasons behind my opinion.
Then check out "Part 2: The Future of MP" for further examination of the end of the Masterpiece toy line and its replacement by the Masterpiece Gattai (MPG) line.
Thanks for watching!
Developed from May-June 2024
My channel: Dedicated mostly to Transformers toy collecting (Masterpiece & Transformers Prime), I shoot and edit the videos to document and share my collecting experience to hopefully help you with yours.
The Masterpiece line has always been changing style and size its just transormers that aim to be high quality and do more than traditional transformers could. But now time and tech has moved on its redundant as we see smaller normal transformers that acomplish as much.
I'm not sure I agree that smaller normal transformers are equal in quality of craftsmanship to legacy pre-MP-60 Masterpiece figures. Can you provide an example?
Counterpoint: MP Ginrai is in scale, at least to some extend (but Star Saber, Ironhide/Ratchet and Ultra Magnus are not)
To my knowledge there's indeed not a number for G1 Optimus, but the official scalechart has him slightly over three times the size of Sparkplug, meaning the 6 meters appears right. Meanwhile, the official Masterforce scale chart has Ginrai's cab robot at the size of 10 meters. This would suggest that if the 6m for G1 is correct, MPG Ginrai would be to small. However...
More importantly, Ginrai's cab robot is slightly bigger than the other Godmasters and Headmasters jrs, and about two heads taller than Minerva. The Victory cartoon shows Minerva to be slightly shorter than G1 Wheeljack, which means that Ginrai's cabrobot should be about a head taller than G1 Wheeljack.
Considering that MP-60 Ginrai is indeed a bit bigger than MP Wheeljack, he's not too short.
Nice analysis! 🙌 It's all about what your choose as your basis for comparison. I choose my basis to be the Freelance Graphiks scale charts since creator Mike Lorber has analyzed bot sizes across the G1 cartoons (American and Japanese) to come up with a unified scale comparison of them all. It's the most comprehensive attempt at scale comparisons I know of. 🙂
I think to be honest the core ginrai is always as same size as G1 OP, judging by the looks of how similar they are, and the similar alternate mode cab. This ginrai size issues only arised recently, when takara announce the mpg ginrai and it come to produce too small compared to standard MP. And the fans started all the research and analysis just to justify the ginrai MPG size. This ginrai size issues never existed before until this MPG released. All this while all the fans agreed that ginrai is the OP height. As cartoon and anime depicted variations of size thru out the shows, i can't accept that ginrai is as small as carbots size. It is the other way round. The japanese carbots are generally larger compare to their G1 counterparts. To support my ideas, i listed the points as;
1. People only concern actual size of Ginrai when MPG announces the figures specifications, yet this thing was not an issue at all because before this, as most of us always thouhgt that ginrai = G1 OP size
2. Ginrai is not carbots size and it is the other way round. Japanese carbots are generally larger. The headmasters (chromedome and the gang) are same size as rodimus prime. JR headmaster more or less as same height as their seniors. Thats why JR headmasters need supports from their vehichle seat when transform to become the robot's head as when in human size they are still kids. And the support of the seat make the head larger. Compare to headmasters season 2 their head are the whole transector body's.
3. Still continuing on point no 2, Ginrai is op size because there are certain scene that ginrai is fighting againts hydra and buster, which are planebot, again should be as same size as the G1 seekers planebots. Dont tell the hydra and busters the planebots are the same size as normal carbots.
4. To confirm this, we can tell the way the first 3P company who ever produce Japanese Godmasterforce characters. FansHobby produced their Godmasters product chracters according to generally known size. The power baser core ginrai is the same as the MP 44 OP size, why Fanshobby did it such a way? They also produced the JR headmasters also as same size as MP cars characters. And Fanshobby hydra and Buster as same as MP starscream (seekers) size. Why they were produced as such? Yess, the answer is back again to my point no 1.
As a conclusions, IMO Core Ginrai is and will always be the same size as G1 OP. All the assumptions that core ginrai is smaller than OP all just an after thought after the MPG09 productions.
At the moment the closest we can get for the MP size and anime accurate looks Ginrai is the KFC Raijin.
How ever MPG09 has another advantages as he is close to scale with the Star Saber MP 24.
Thanks for sharing your argument and information. 🙌 If it is indeed accurate, you make a great point about the size of Ginrai not being a question until MPG-09 came into being.
WoW! That’s Incredibly Cool! Have a great week!
Thanks. You, too! 👍
considering masterpiece beast wars arent the size of worlds smallest transformers i dont think they care about consistent scale that said it does fit the wfc scale they are doing
LOL! Great point about the size of Beast Wars MP figures. I don't collect characters from that series, so I hadn't really even considered that. Also, matching MP-60's scale to the WFC series scale is interesting. Thanks for sharing both of these observations. 😁🙌🙏
Im bummed. Powermaster was my favorite toy as a kid. I wish it would scale with my over MPs. I have Power Baser which is amazing. Im going to have to go with the KFC Raijin. MPG looks really good
Sorry that MP-60 and MPG-09 disappoint; I wish they would have been true MP scale as well. I didn't know Powermaster Optimus as a kid, so my loyalty is to the character of Ginrai which I discovered in more recent years. Now I realize that Takara wasn't going for an anime look for MP-60; they were going for a retro look that resembles the original core toy of Powermaster Optimus! So, while they may have nailed a Powermaster look, I think they failed at a Ginrai/Super Ginrai look.
So glad scale isn’t a concern for me. I plan to display super/god Ginrai with haslab star saber, legacy armada Optimus and aotp star convoy. There’s no scale for me, just a collection of bucket list bots.
Yeah, I wish it wasn’t for me either, but my time collecting Masterpiece bots has given me certain expectations. I’m happy that you will enjoy Ginrai. Like Bobby Skullface says: “If you like it, you win!” 🙂👍
I'm still waiting on MP Prime figures lol
Same here. 😆
The 6m for Optimus never really worked
Does MP60 scale with MPG Raiden?
Never had him in hand, but the seperate bots always seemed a little too small
MP-60 is actually too large to be in scale with MPG Raiden. I don't know for certain about all the individual Trainbots, but MPG-01 Shouki is definitely too small by 1+ inch.
Mp, i think, means more how much articulation there is n the design of the figure. It's kind of like gundam. You have high grade, which is maybe 70 parts to it. master grade, which has the inner skeleton and 70 to 400 pieces n pg, which is taller and has 400 to over 1000 pieces.
Hmmm, that's reasonable and a good explanation. 👍But in my collection, scale accuracy is a part of what I want, and the MP Transformers fandom and third-party toy companies have been producing things in a scale which, at least roughly, matches the Freelance Graphiks scale charts from the comparison's I've made. As well as the fact that Takara Tomy seemed to be standardizing on a scale when they redesigned Optimus Prime for MP-10 Convoy to match the scale of MP-09 Rodimus Convoy (tfwiki.net/wiki/The_Transformers:_Masterpiece). Ultimately though, as Bobby Skullface has said, if you like what's in your collection, you win! 🙂👍
I got the mpg super ginria or whatever his name is in the Japanese story line. Compared with the fans toys ultra maginus they look good side by side. Now is the masterpiece scale done ? No other companies will keep doing what takara is walking away from
Agreed: the future of MP is already here: th-cam.com/video/D5G86CYrXp8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ufG69DZKKeSX97rD I believe that the MP Transformers fandom defined what MP was supposed to be, and now Takara wants to move the fandom in a smaller direction. But the fandom still has third-party MP toy companies!
He feels like a chug Ginrai with insane budget. If you want a true MP scale Ginrai I’d get KFC Raijin. MPG is head to head with commander 86 Optimus. KFC is head to head with MP-44
@@Archon_Convoy Yes! That’s exactly it! It’s just a fancy CHUG! Well said! 🙌 Thanks for the recommendation of KFC’s Raijin; that’s the same height as MP-44?
@ about the same size, Raijin is like a head-1/2 ish taller. To me that makes sense, the core body is supposed to be an in universe upgrade for Optimus. So makes sense he’s a little taller 🤷♂️
@ if you want something PURELY for scale then get power baser, his core bot is exactly the same height as MP-44, I just prefer Raijin since he’s more anime accurate.
@@Archon_Convoy Thanks for the recommendation. 🙏👍 I actually own Power Baser, so I've got that covered. Maybe it's just my head canon, but none of the current Ginrai options look enough like the Japanese cartoon IMHO. 🤷♂
@ I agree with you on that, I like Raijin and the official a lot. But they don’t scream Masterforce to me. Raijin flubs the accuracy in a lot of different ways, Power Baser looks awesome but is super stylized. The Takara can’t figure out if it wants to be the toy or the anime.
Thank goodness i've only collected G1 of Season 1 / 2 and Partial Movie figures, never was into the Japanese continuity...
The only upsetting thing is not having official Jazz/Mirage in the Masterpiece scale... but I got very good alternatives...
Sounds like you’re set. 👍 You know what they say, “More bots, more problems”. 😆
Sunstreaker was the last official MP I bought, since then I collect 3rd party bots exclusively and boy the difference in night and day. KFC Raijin(core robot) is on the way to me to finally complete my Raijin set and become the best possible western iteration of Powermaster Optimus Prime with the MARVEL Comics optional head and arm pieces! Not this overpriced, japanese nonsense hollow CHUG toy, I have zero respect or anticipation for! I'm selling my FansHobby PowerBaser even, cause KFC's does a perfect job embodying PMOP. Official brands can go bankrupt, I won't even flinch! 🤣
Edit:
I watched the video and have to point out that you got congused. MP-60 IS indeed to scale with MP-10 and others(as long as we consider the core ginrai bot Optimus sized and not slightly bigger), while MPG-9 who also comes with a smaller core Ginrai bot is MPG scaled, just like MP-24 Star Saber. Hope that clears out the fog.
😆 Personally, I'm still not satisfied with any of the Masterpiece PMOP/God Ginrai options since none of them nail the Japanese Transformers Super-God Masterforce look IMO. Congrats on finding your version of PMOP! 🙌
Isnt the japanese name for Optimus Iron Convoy?
Not that I’m aware of. I’ve always seen his name on Japanese products displayed as “Convoy”. But maybe there’s a version of him which is called “Iron Convoy”. 👍🤷
Is the human to scale with the e other humans and if it is then it is too scale
Do you mean if the human figure that comes with MP-60 is the same size as Spike and Sparkplug from MP-44, then MP-60 is scaled correctly?
@ why yes that is what I’m saying
@@chaosenforcerdhm969 Thanks for that confirmation. Due to the "mass shifting" which Transformers can do, I think the best judgment of scale is between their bot modes and not with the human figures that come with the Masterpiece characters.
I am very happy with my Fans Hobby Power Baser and the God Armour.
However, I am miffed that TakaraTomy appear to be abandoning the masterpiece scale when there're still many figures they haven't done. I've been waiting for the Insecticons (there's no way I'm paying the inflated prices for the Fans Toys ones), Galvatron, Jazz, Springer, heck all the triple changers and headmasters.
Power Baser looks really cool. 👍How tall is the base "Ginrai" bot compared to MP-10 or MP-44 Optimus? With the latest leaked announcement of a MPG Shattered Glass Optimus (th-cam.com/video/gaHX6NGiYZE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EOccd2RrzuXI1i9n&t=130), I wouldn't be surprised if all Takara puts out in the near future from MPG are new "MPG class" characters and repaints of existing MP molds. If they do release new G1 MP size figures in the MPG line, I bet they'll string collectors along with mostly other stuff in between. 🙄
@@mp_reviews you know Mike!! Is like what you said!!..we have no Insecticons, they didn't finish the Dinobots, no Galvatron, Constructicons, or other season 1, 2, 3, Staple main Characters. But yet they'll do a Skids?..🤔 I mean, I don't get it? 🤷. Once again I love Takara, but is almost like Gosh!! Do they know there market?..than they released those Trainbots ..what a Catastrophe! I mean, am happy for people who bought them and love them!! But Goodness Gracious!! $160 for one Trainbot?..that looks like a CHUG mainline? That's insane. Did you see when he combines? It's like ..almost incredible that they actually sold this to the public. 😵
@@mp_reviews The Ginrai part of Power Baser is the same height as MP-10.
I believe Fans Hobby is reissuing Power Baser in the fourth quarter of this year..
@2006chunming Haha. Good point about Skids. I’m afraid Takara will be stringing out the remaining G1 characters people want among other releases (e.g. re-decos and other undersized combiners like Raiden) in the hope that Masterpiece TF fans will buy those along the way. If so, we may NEVER get Takara releases of some of the G1 characters people want. #pleasetakaratomy #moreg1masterpieceplease
I picked up the rerelease. It’s not my ideal Ginrai (too chunky), but it looks great.
The only thing changing is the name on the box…
Hmmm, maybe.
Mann!! Great video Mike!! Yes!! I agree with everything said. Personally, for me ..I could never really understand Takara. Is almost like they lack focus. One day they're doing a Hoist, another day they'll be Transformers masterforce, than they'll go to season 3. But yet those Train bots don't scale with the actual Masterpiece line. Than they say there coming out with an MPG line that will replace the current Masterpiece line. But they don't really clarify if the Numeric sequence will continue? Will it be MPG-01? 🤷♂️ ..people are not sure if they're going with another scale 🤔...is almost like they lack focus and direction!..to be honest. Third-party has literally been the Go To for alot of collectors. If companies like Fanstoys, Xtransbots, Mmc Ocular Max, Deformation Space, Star toys, wouldn't exist..I don't think I would collect. I surely hope they're successful!! Because I really do love Takara! I think there Hoist and Trailbreaker are the Definitive versions of the Characters imo! Also Mp-44, MP-47 Hound, and imo they get the Articulation and they seem to capture likenesses of the Characters the Best. But I think sometimes like xtb..they pick poor choices in materials. Imo!! Mmc seems to be the best when it comes to that plability factor. As always great video Mike!!❤
Thanks, bro! I think Takara knows that the most hard-core fans are G1 fans, and so they're in no rush to release the entire cast since there are other TF eras they might be able to get G1 fans and others to buy along the way. If they aren't careful, third-party might eat their lunch! And if we see third-party releases get cancelled and become fewer and fewer, we'll know that Takara/Hasbro has held third-party's chain all this time.
Mp line is dieing they are rebranding it as a attempt to squeeze life out of it. They could save the toyline but that would take firing about 20 to 50 percent the senior staff at this point to purge the toxic staff and focus on quality figures at decent prices. It's not just mp or transformers it's the entire company and product lines that are failing. Ya I hope the figure is good for collectors but it's too gone to save the line hence rebranding.
I agree that the line is being rebranded to squeeze more life (money) out of it (the fandom). But when you talk about "toxic staff", are you meaning Takara Tomy's staff or Hasbro's?
I think mp-60 and mpg-09 will be full backwards compatible with original powermaster toy. So, scale of mpg-09 will be roughly the same as mp-24.
I’m confused: “backwards compatible with original powermaster toy”? Do you mean with the original G1 Powermaster Optimus Prime?
Just get FansHobby's version of Power Master Optimus Prime.
That is a cool version for sure. Is the base robot the same height as MP-10/MP-44?
@@mp_reviews Yep.
That’s freaking awesome! Great recommendation! Thanks. 🙏🤜🤛
@@mp_reviews You're welcome! Also don't forget to pick up FansHobby Darkwing and Dreadwind so you have those characters along with PowerMaster Optimus Prime to recreate issue 42 from the Transformers comic.
@@scottcampbell9515 masterpiece darkwing duck confirmed?
Height of characters base on various episodes of TF victory
Victory Saber > Starsaber (SS) = God Ginrai (GG) = Victory Leo (VL) > Super Ginrai (SG)
# GG > SG
When SS was about to lose to Leokaiser GG came and rescued him. You can see both are about same height or if you want to, you can say that SS is a tad taller than GG.
That is because GG reincarnated and become VL. Most of the scene SS abit taller than VL.
So if we want screen accurate scale we need toy SG who are 75% height of SS; and GG as same height as SS. Victory Saber is the tallest form of all.
My personal opinion the closest for that at the moment i choose Takara LGex GG with MP 24 SS. The height is much closer with GG comes a bit shorter than SS but he is as same size as KFC Keith Fantasy Simba (VL) which are compatible with MP 24 SS to form Victory Saber.
Oooh!!🙌Am I correct that you are saying that the best scale match for Victory Saber (MP-24 + KFC Simba) is Takara LG-ex?
Yes sir. IMO those are the closest accurate scale toys to match with. Most of the fans of TF Godmaster Masterforce and TF Victory series didnt aware of the scale. Most of them thought and prefered that height Star Saber = Super Ginrai; and height of Victory Saber = God Ginrai; which is not the case in the both cartoon series.
Heck yeah! Right on! Thanks for the info. 🙏💪👍
