I cannot help but think that the last Genesis tour was a bad move for him. He was in decent physical shape prior to that tour, but really declined after it. He put a lot of stress on his body to do things that it did when he was a young man. His drumming style has always been very energetic, and very unorthodox. He slouches behind a drum set which looms over him. His technique and knowledge were at the highest level in rock, but the unorthodox technique appears to have done long term damage to his spine. First his hands went, now he can barely walk. The emotional toll was so heavy that he almost drank himself to death.
When people try to malign him for his 80's ubiquitousness, I get reflexively defensive of him. He has always been a skilled musician and performer. He deserves to be considered with reverence. He is a genius arranger, and was the catalytic element in Genesis. No Phil, Genesis would not have continued beyond Trespass.

He dislocated some vertebrae in his neck that effected his hand, and the surgery caused him to get 'drop foot' where his foot is numb and he needs to use a cane to assist him when walking.
GDK Opinionator such a great comment. You've articulated Phil's talent perfectly, and I'm sure it's how he would want to be described. I gotta say one thing honestly - as a 57 year old drummer myself, seeing Phil has gotten me back into the gym 3x/week. I'm a jazz player and my technique is pretty good but seeing what happened to Phil got me a bit......Ok I'll say it, scared. I need at lest 23 years more behind the kit.

Derek aKa PaPa-D are you trying to engage in a good faith discussion or start a flame war? I was defending Phil from the haters, not making light of his decisions. Not every negative sentiment (in the middle of an otherwise highly complimentary post) is cause for cancellation.
I went to the concert last night. So happy I had the opportunity to see him preform. He’s amazing and so is his son. Following right in his fathers footsteps!

He still sounds great! I had this playing in the background while I was doing some things around the house and I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between how he sounds now compared to how he sounded in the 1980s. To those people who are saying he is a washed up old man, you are wrong. His mind, voice, and personality is the same Phil we always loved in his prime days. Yes, his body doesn’t work the way it used to but that happens to most every one when they get older and because of injuries and illnesses he’s had a difficult time physically. He is still enormously talented and I’m so thrilled that he is still touring.
Jackie DeMichele, you really ought to get yours ears cleared out, seriously I love Phil Collins but just like Paul Mcartney you have to know when to give it up, the performances given by Phil and Paul are pale imitations of their past achievements and carrying on is just destroying their heritage, Phil should hang up the mic and let his son take the strain. I am so sad to hear and see what this once wonderful artist has become.
Saw his Still Not Dead Yet show in Denver last October. Absolutely fantastic concert! The crowd loved every minute, but watching Phil closely, I sure he was having even more fun.

To see him like this moves me so much, have not the words. I grown up with his music the last 45 years. Genesis is from 1972 till 1985 in alevel of Bach, Mozart and Rachmaninov.

I'm so emotional about what happened to him.. I have back pain 3times messed for 11 years ..all you can do is rest, stretching everyday and walking. I'm 61 y old...I 'm going to have surgery.
no, building back muscle is the best you can do. Train with heavy weights and eat enough protein + calories.
All that Yoga stuff didn't help me. Had back pain for a decade. Now I'm free of pain because of the weight training. But Phil had a neck surgery that caused his problems, not back stuff.

Ist seit der letzten Genesis-Tour 2007 leider um 30 Jahre gealtert ... Ich hoffe die kriegen für die Tour nächstes Jahr irgendwie Peter Gabriel dazu, der ihn beim Singen etwas supportet oder sich mit ihm abwechselt. Der ist ja noch relativ fit.

All tempos are desperately slow, is it because Chester Thompson is not there, or because Phil Collins is getting older...?
Some musicians (including Phil) are approaching the 70 yo mark. Cant blame them for not having the energy of their 30s. I'd like to be able to perform at the same age . Retirement means death for some people you know.

With all respect to the history of music he created (and i am a Genesis fan) , but he SHOULD NOT have made this tour. It's a mess to see him in this state and gives a headache to listen to the tuned down to the max classic songs like on a cassette player with low battery.
