Great video JP! Love the turntable ! They used to have one down here at Greensburg Ky., it got tore out back in the 60's wish I could've seen it, I was too young, the line got abandoned in 1984 sadly, all that's left is a trail and 2 tunnels. Great job on the railroad videos love them!
Thanks for the video, and your positive view of Altoona. I grew up 3 blocks off the mainline (near the footprint of the old roundhouse). Been away for almost 40 yrs and now live back in town. I live not so close to the tracks, but I love the sounds of the railroad every day. Enjoy your vids very much!

Having basically grown up in Altoona, or at least the next town north, it's always nice to see someone cover Juniata shops some more, recently they've had a lot of power just sitting around though unfortunately, I'd love to see that pusher in action over there sometime, I used to have a friend that lived in one of the houses by the turntable too!
You were in the right place at the right time to catch that awesome shot of the gorgeous Wabash Heritage Unit on the turntable. And heck yeah, I want that house! It can always be renovated, but as they say with real estate it's all about location, location, location! I'd have an HO layout in the basement, N Gage on the first floor, and Z on the second floor. Live streams 24/7!
Great video Jay!!! I love living in the country so I probably wouldn't like to live there. I sure would love to visit often though!!! Wonderful drone footage as always!!! Take care, stay safe and God bless you Jay!!! Happy New Year Jay, Jill and Lili!!!
I like this Video. I've seen a Train on the turntable before. Here in Ft Worth Tx. We have an Old Steam Engine that the Rebuilt along some Cars. They call it the Tranuntula it operates everyday during certain times. It is Now Housed in Granbury but still runs down to the Stockyards in Northside where the Tourists flock to. I really enjoyed this Video as I love the sounds of Trains from far away, so haunting so Beauitful so Mysterious.
I love trains. When I first lived in Hummelstown, Pa the house was less than 30 ft from then Conrail tracks. The sound of the trains going by would put me to sleep. Yes my friend I would love that house and to make it even better when you wanted friends over built a nice deck on the side looking down into the turntable. Now that would be something no one else would have.
Just incredible the number of engines there. What a great view from the drone looking down at that turntable. Might be a bit hard sleeping in that house, but yeah for sure I would have a live cam on that yard 24/7.
That is beautiful !!!! 🌟 I have to tell you... my Son’s name is Connor ~ so learning about the color “Con~Blue” ~ was pretty cool to me. Thank you, to you and yours ... 🎉Happy New Years to you all!🎉

Way to go JP! Another great railroad content video. Love the heritage Wabash unit. The house would be cool to visit, but between the noise and the stink of diesel fuel it would be tough to live in.
I would absolutely love to live in that house I would never get bored of living next to all that train stuff, also I would have loads of turntable party's, lol , all the best for the new year sir, gr8 video godbless you,
As the switcher (EMD SW1200?) shoved he road unit onto the turntable, I wondered, because of the length of it, if it was a balanced turntable and it would be centered and the SW would back away or if it was a twin span table. Then the switcher stayed on behind it and my question was answered: twin span. (In steam days, since the engine was so much heavier than the tender, even when coaled and watered, the loco's center of balance, somewhere near the back of the engine had to be over the center, leaving a space in front of the pilot. When the loco's weight was centered, the entry end bogies would lift off the pit rail and the weight would be taken with the center bearing. As longer and longer locos were developed, tables had to increase in length, turntables rebuilt or relocated, taking up already precious real estate. The twin span table, developed by Bethlehem Steel in the 1920s, spread the weight over both end bogies and the center bearing, so center of balance didn't matter. I'll bet there were times when hostlers spotted short locos just clear of the ends of the table's rails to turn it, which would've been an odd thing to see! Altoona was an incredible facility in the early days, when the Pennsy built a lot of their own locomotives and a large percentage of their rolling stock. It's not too shabby in modern times, either! Stay safe, everybody.
I don't know exactly what you're talking about but that table has a motor on each end to drive it around. We only usually place a unit on the middle when spinning it for cab orientation going into the shop or for transportation.

If you filmed this right before you posted, we didn't have 1000 employees. Around 600 then. Less than 500 now. Thanks to NS greed. We are capable of far more than what they're using us for. The test shed you referred to is simply testing it like that all the electronics and air brake equipment works right. Then of course load on rebuilds. The overhaul line, track most south, also tests before release though not as in depth because its mostly the engine parts they have to worry about. Theres an emissions lab on the opposite end of the shops in use which tests exactly what its called.
