This is the place where the original GG! was designed and built, and where the entire fleet of GG1's was built and maintained. The history here is stunning.
I worked there, in Altoona, PA., for 44 years. Started there back in 1949 when it was the PRR(Pennsylvania Railroad).
Tom Waa it considered a high paying job back in the day?
How old are you Tom? I live within miles of this place in Altoona.
Grew up just blocks from this place. Brings back a lot of memories as a kid, and my Dad taking me down to watch the engines on the turntable and having Sheetz hotdogs.

Sounds like you and your Dad had fun! How fortunate. Thanks for sharing your memories!
When you grow up in Altoona, you always hear people say that this is the dream job for men to have in this town. I always see so many guys try so hard to get in this place for work.
Can you blame them?
I am obsessed with trains. Love the video.
I love Altoona PA, it just gets better everyday.
I’ve never seen a turntable at work and was to have gone up to Altoona tomorrow but unfortunately the trip was postponed. Thanks for sharing your great view :-))
Great video, Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks for watching! Craig
Great Job you had a good day to film and some nice action.. Thanks
Outstanding video! Love the turntable!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Craig
Hey Rich, That video was shot from a public road, I couldn't believe how close I could get. The fence is made of bars about 4" apart so you can shoot right through them. Glad you liked the vid! Craig
That's a great video, taken from a vantage point that would be off limit's for most of us. Well done! Rich
This is great! Thanks for sharing!
I love the dash9 train I'm going to be a train engineer when I grow up I love them and I'm 13
It's amazing that little orange vehicle can push and pull a huge locomotive like that
Jared Klock it's probably a tiny shunter locomotive
Jared Klock not really. I have seen one of those engines carry a mile long freight train before on its own
Thank you for this interesting video.
I'm a HUGE Pennsy fan, so I love it down there!
Thanks Buddy!
Awesome video! Good job guys.
Greets
Hi, The 2220 is an SW1500, They both do fit on the turntable, but it's tight. Craig
Thanks Steven, Glad you liked it. Craig
The engineer of that switcher must be pretty skilled to get both the switcher and the road engine on the turntable with the couplers hanging off!
Trainzguy 2472 it’s not just the engineer, it’s also his helper that gives him signals on spotting the units
Fantastic video love it
Nice shots!
I had no idea that railroads still have turntables!
Yeah buddy, that place is AWESOME! Craig
Thanks William, Craig
great video, what camera do you use?
Interesting as always.
Great video
Wow, American switchers/shunters are huge compared to British shunters! They're the same size as the mainline locomotives!
Well American trains are also heavier
nice video i love the ending
Thanks, Glad you liked it! Craig
Juniata Shops is the most important structure on the NS every day thousands of trains tackle Horseshoe Curve and if a train breaks down this is the only place to get it fixed.
Lol
Any experts on here care to explain what constitutes a class 1 railroad and it's guidelines for pulling/pushing?
cool! you got the BP4 #999 too!
Whoaaaaa...that teeny little orange switcher (or is it not a switcher) moved that D9!!
Yep. It's called Rail King. I went to their website. Those teeny little rail car movers pack tons of power and tractive effort.
I shared this on FB it got a good response
Basic design , but very entertaining to see a Turntable in action . what is it about a Railroad that can get your full attention ?
Nice Video.
Was this taken from the parking lot of the abandoned Sheetz or somewhere else? What time of day was this?
Drive down the street right next to the abandoned Sheetz and its right there. AWESOME.
That locomotive cab in the sign used to be contrail painted.
At 2:00 I just had to hum the Thomas the Tank engine turntable theme when the engine was spinning lol
ITS OVER 9000
THATS FOR SURE
Man that critter is strong
2220 has a nice new home in Phillipsburg NJ on the Bel Del
I have one question why does the turntable have a horn?
damn thats a powerful railking the one at linwood yard isnt used much but it could do that
Love to Norfolk southern
I LOVE THE ENDING!! A Stooge fan is my fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't this the shop that was owned by the PA Railroad? I think it's where the K4 steam engines AND the entire fleet of GG1's was built and maintained.
yes the Pennsylvania railroad built the shops the gg1 and steam engines where built here I think shops in enola or Philly handled GG1maintaince
Since this video, turntable was replaced. All new windows for the building.
I didn’t even realize
thats a fast turn table lol. i wish i seen 999 wen i was there memorial day..
