I worked for Daimler Chrysler as a machine repairman/ machinist at the Kokomo, IN casting plant. We worked with some quite large machinery, but I'd love to see the some of the machining processes in action. I am impressed by the cleanliness of such a large facility! Loved the tour..thank you.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I was relatively new into video producing, and I realize it's far from high standards, but I appreciate the respect you have shown for the coverage. So I Thank You!
The NS livery is really eye catching, especially a new paint job.
Love to be able to do a tour like this. Back in the 70s-80s, I was a member of the Navy Reserve, the center was across the highway from these shops. Saw them from the outside many times, but never inside. Quite interesting.
My dad had retired from the Enola diesel shop as a machinist/mechanic. I got to go there yesterday it was awesome. Great video thanks for sharing love seeing this stuff or anything railroad/ Norfolk Southern related.
That is really cool Adam! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Deryk
Labeling the parts and stages of operation was a brilliant idea. Kudos to the person who came up with that idea.
This is the place were dreams are created!!! What a awesome place!!!
yep felt the same way. thanks DG for the video,
Nice I need to go there
Wow , What a great tour and Fun Day !!!
Mike
Thanks Mike, It was a fun day for sure!
Deryk
Awesome D! Bet you had a blast especially when you first saw those SD40-2's sitting there! Great tour and great vid. Bet you were on cloud 9 that day! Thanks for posting this!
Best,
John
John this was an awesome day!!!! The only thing that would have made it better, would have been if they fired some of those locos up! hahaha
Deryk
Thanks you for the tour of the loco shops. Sorry about the weather in sydney about 24 to 30 centigrade again thank you fore the video
graham day Thanks Graham! Send some warm weather this way.
My incle works for NS, this place is where dreams are created
Yes I agree!
Fascinating video for anyone building a model loco shop. One could spend hours getting the interior details right. For me, having worked in heavy engineering in the dim distant past, it brought back the smell of cutting machine coolant, electrical windings and welding fumes............breathe in............thanks Deryk...........David UK)
You bet David!! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Deryk
Thank you Deryk for this awesome Tour ! You know I am from Northern Germany and it is to far away, to see this ! Now.... that is "our"MRR commiunity, to share lots of Train things ! Thank you my friend

Deryk

My pleasure!
Thanks for the Tour, not many get to see or go through these facilities.
Thank you for posting this. Just fantastic to see it all!
unifrax5 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! I appreciate it
I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO KNOW WHEN THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE IN 2023 I HAD MANY RELATIVES WAY BACK IN THE DAY THAT WORKED AT THE LOCOMOTIVE SHOP THERE AND LIVED IN THE AREA MYSELF INCLUDED I WOULD LOVE TO GO THERE THIS YEAR IF THEY'RE HAVING IT.
Not sure if it ever will happen again. It would be cool if it did! I got lucky that day and had someone give me a ticket to attend...
the NS Juniata Locomotive Shops are the best in the world Only because of hard work that went into from the Pennsy and later Conrail.... the work crew is mostly ex Conrail... Conrail still rules the rails !!
Unbelievably clean I used to live across the street from that shop back when they worked Steam Locomotives between the soot and dirty snow the place was a mess.
I'd like to know how many man hours went into making that shop so pristine for the tour. Amazing shop!
What music clip is that, it's awesome! (first one, but they're all good) Great video!
Deryk that was fantastic tour, looks like you had great day ,looking forward to part 2
Cheers Glynn
Thanks Glynn! It was cool getting to tour the facility!
Deryk
Great tour looks awesome I'll have to check it out
hello great video excellent detail 👍😊 do you know why the Norfolk southern locomotive shop in Chattanooga Tennessee has always been off limits to everyone?
Pennsylvania Proud! Best locomotive shop in the USA
Very unique and exciting opportunity!!!
Great. Look at all the detail parts for your engine house!
LOL! Tons of detail parts!
I bet you're still smiling! Great video can't wait for part 2!
You bet!!!
Very cool video. Really enjoyed that. will be looking for part 2.
Thanks! Part 2 is up.
Deryk

At 2:54, are those 2 GP20D's i see way off in the distance? LOL, those might have just come from the Central Maine and Quebec Railway where I live near!!!
Would love to see in person some day, great job on the video.
vettebecker1 Thanks buddy!
Great video & great tour
hey Deryk... that was a super great video... lots of stuff one could model for detailing an engine house... @ 15:47 i can't believe how bent the connecting rod is... nice job.. thanks for sharing & i am looking forward to # 2
vinny
Thanks Vinny! I believe that connecting rod was the reason for the engine work, LOL
Deryk
Great video, nice soundtrack too!
Dave Richmond Thanks Dave!
very cool
Thanks!
where did you get this music from? this music is taking me to another world!!
Shane Stoddard Thanks! I just use the music from the TH-cam free music library.
Now thats cool!! Thanks for sharing this. Later, John
Thanks John!
Deryk, that was a great tour. By "family day" is Norfolk Southern only allowing employees families to look around or are they open to the general public? I forgot how huge North American rail equipment is. This puts it back into perspective. Thanks for posting, looking forward to part 2.
The tour required a ticket to get into, and those tickets were only available to and from employees. I got that ticket from and employee who wasn't going to use it. I'm not sure if they ever open to the general public or not. But I know they don't have tours very often. Thanks for watching! And part 2 is now up!
Deryk
very,very nice video---well done!
NICE! Thanks for sharing…
Thanks Jeff!
Deciding which way to point the camera must have been a major obstacle. Well done for overcoming it...........David (UK
Hahahha, You are correct David!
Awesome, I would loved to be there to see all that. Now, how do I get one of those engines in the SUV.
It was a fun day! And when I can figure out how to get one home, I will be sure to let you know, LOL
Deryk
Just cut a hole in the hood, lol
Nice video (music video that is). I would like some narration of what you;re seeing much better than the music. Don't mean to be overly critical, but some of us don't know the nuances of what you show.
(I'm the mom writing this) We are planning a trip to PA in June from Michigan. Do you know if someone at NS would be willing to be interviewed at this location about what they do? If not, do you know of a safe area that we could watch them work? Thanks.
No, I do not know anyone there. And I don't know of any place you could watch them work. You would have to be inside the buildings to see that. I was able to do this tour during an open house they had during a Memorial day weekend.
that's cool
Thanks!
Grab part for conrail SD 40-2 for rebuild requesting six half up front other half on delivery conrail international shipping rail RR heavy haulers very reliable an low manitance
Wow what a shop, I'm a machinest by trade it would be really fun to work there, and I would be working on what I love the train locomotives probobley make some really good money to...Frank m...
Great video. I would love to visit the shops. Was that open to only Pitt. Div. employees or to other division people? I'm in the Harris. Div. Does NS do it every year?
smartassstevie It was only open to the shop's employees and their families. Not sure if they do it every year.
Great video of shops! Do they still do anything like this now in 2019?
I'm not sure if they still do this or not.
The song by 7:28 i love it
We make the locomotives top quality!
Nice video Great
Thanks!!
very nice. what the song playing, called? the first one..between 1min . i like it lol.
MARCELLINO GUARNERO Ah man, I'm not sure, something I found on the TH-cam music library. LOL
***** oh lol ok no problem. where i live, there UP railroads, seem very busy, o most everyday, can hear them. get alot of Coal on the main line. and hoppers. got beer factorys near. Milwaukee, Wi CP rail just on the other side. i seen NS alot too on UP railroads.
Is it looks looks like back day in 1994 conrail have this year...
Nrm i found it The Place Inside - Silent Partner
Like from me cheers Robert
Thanks Robert!
Deryk
Any idea why the Loco' No. 999 at 12:45 is painted green?............forgive my ignorance.......David (UK)
Sure David, NS 999 is their all battery powered switcher. They had it in the shops doing a battery upgrade.
Thanks for that Deryk. I've learned something new..........David (UK)
You're welcome! To be honest, I'm not a fan of it. I want to hear, feel and smell that big ass diesel engine!
What is that P40 doing there?
How did you get this tour?
Why was there a P32 at 4:56?
I honestly don't know.
Well n.s. closed it now I herd I maybe wrong.
It's not closed
what's The song by engine shop
What’s Norfolk southern doing with the p42
Rebuilding it probably a lot of companies send locomotives there
15:53 . Well........that isn't good. Id love to hear the story behind that connecting rod.
+epistte Me too!
did you see the dash 8.5?
Hmm, I'm not 100% sure. That's NS 8500 I believe.
Was this a public event?
No, it was an employee appreciation day, where employee's could bring their families. I was lucky to have a ticket given to me.
DG Modelworks oh cool!
awww what about at 7:38 cant find it XD
lol nrm i found it. Thnx all. Parasail by:Silent Panther.
what engine was that GE P32acdm
+Baldland Northern Products (CLR) I believe that was a rebuild for metro service.
Why would a slug need a fuel tank if it doesn't have an engine?
There are hatches cut on tank for ballast
ah ok I always wondered why but didn't want to ask a stupid question thx :)
+Dylan Ruppert No such thing as a stupid question, you don't know that is why you ask.
I wanna know when a shop would be closed down for an employee Appreciation day . CSX doesn't do this Shit .
This was a pretty cool thing they did, but I doubt they will ever do it again. Considering the current affairs of the railroad.
Kind of sad not to see anyone working on the locos...
I agree! I would have loved to see that myself.
Jon Frost
it's probably a weekend Jon when there's nobody working it's safer for Joe public to visit when there's nobody welding, painting,&moving loco's email. this. etc!
It was a Labor Day event they held for families of the workers.
Bent push rod and piston at 15:47 ? Man.. that's king size catastrophic engine failure.
the SD60s and the SD70s are very good looking units until some idiot starts makin alterations in the attempt to make it more user friendly. I have seen a lot of stuff lately that just looks off. The short hoods on the SD40-2s are missing the upper radii that gives them the strength to resist a slow speed collision. they just look cheap as hell!
9 dorks don't like this?what is there not to like
Thanks buddy. That was my thoughts too!
In my opinion, if the cameraman would smooth out his movements it would be easier for the viewer to FOCUS
Thanks for your AWESOME feedback. Maybe you could actually post a video showing me how it's done? I looked on your channel to see an example, but you don't have any videos.
DG Modelworks Thats a third degree burn you have there.
We could really do without the groovy music!
ns motors suck period most uncomfortable pos out there to have to operate
who is the degenerate that came up with that freakin ugly crescent cab? that is the ugliest damn thing I have ever seen! that has no business being on a locomotive. It looks like a homemade repair job by someone that was too poor to do it right
+Shane Stoddard I think the crescent cabs look like Groucho Marx eyebrows. I agree with you. They are ugly. Other than that I love NS. I live across the street from a very busy NS mainline in central Ohio and see all of these diesels every day.
hey curtis I like NS too I live in utah and i use ns for run through power on my layout. i am working with horizon hobby and athearn to get the pr43 and the 30c into ho scale i think that is one sharp lookin loc.
Shane Stoddard Altoona Works
Shane Stoddard Are you talking about the SD80-Mac cab?
