    RMC is an excellent jacket product. The Japanese became obsessed with the WWII American flight jackets. So the quality is amazing.
    One thing you should know about the A-2. They are not all the same. Multiple wartime makers had slight differences their patterns. Your particular jacket is early war. They were much slimmer and tapered in fit. Also, your jacket is modeled after the Rough Wear brand. One feature of their jackets is the use of a collar stand. Its why your jacket's collar sits higher. Later contracts by other makers eliminated it. They lay flatter.
    An observation on your jacket. Your shoulder width is a bit narrow. You'd be served better with more. Yes, the jacket will relax. Many of us A-2 wearers will sleep in them or spray outer with water and wear til air dried to give a better molded fit.
    You are fortunate you have two premier jacket makers in the UK. Aero in Scotland and Eastman Leather. Both have websites and very customer service oriented. The damn covid lockdowns prevent factory visits, but I encourage you to check them out. Their experts can tell you more about these jackets than this space provides.
    Great choice and best to you!

      Thanks so much for your reply! Very thoughtful and such good info. I think my Mrs would kick me out of bed though if i got in with an A2 on hah. I did not know that about the collar stand, makes so much sense too, so thank you. And good to know it will relax over time in the shoulders. I've worn it in the drizzle rain a few times and certainly don't baby it. Would love to visit Aero some day soon though. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

    Its a killer A2 by one of the best makers out there. I'm wearing a horsehide A2 as I watch your vid. Yours is an extremely nice fit and looks really good when worn. These jackets are made to last a lifetime...and will. My other A2 is a custom job done in black with black knits, black lining that I've had for 23 years...and will get it back into rotation when i break in this horsehide tank of a jacket. Don't sell, give away or trade your jacket, you'll regret it as they only get better with age.Wear it in good health...

      Cheers Ken, I'm loving it more and more of late. Wore it out today and got caught in a small downpour and just went with it. The more you look at this, you can see the design is very specific to the actual wartime application. The cooler environment on the sea for naval aviators led to the mouton collar on the G-1, the A-2 would have been worn typically along with a wool twill uniform shirt (which re-enactor sites actually do sell even today), and an undershit. This works okay for a fighter aircraft even if it flies at 20,000 feet for a while, but it would have been too weak an insulator for crews on bombers which have plenty of time in air at around 20,000 ft. They also get drafts flowing through the aircraft which are super cold. Thus you see the bomber crews were outfitted with shearling lined or faced very warm jackets (both USA and British had their own). It's all form follows function. The pockets were specifically designed this way so pilots were NOT to be standing around with their hands in their pockets. Gibson and Barnes makes a very nice "CIVIL" version of both the A-2 and G-1, which has hand warmer side entry slash pockets (lined) which absolutely helps make the jacket easier for civilians to wear day-to-day. I have G&B's Civil A-2 and love it. It is well made of excellent Goatskin hide by this company in Southern California. The founder was a USMC aviator and obviously caters to the professional pilot crowd (they sell helmets, jumpsuits, mic rigs, boots, everything a pilot would really care about).

  • @geohaney1
    @geohaney1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It’s certainly a beautiful jacket. However I’m conflicted about it due to functionality. As you mentioned, having side entry pockets is such a natural feature for a jacket. A few A-2 designs actually have welted side entry pockets that sit behind the patch pockets and are invisible, keeping the original design yet adding that needed function. I feel that pocket feature with the addition of an interior welted chest pocket for stowing your phone, passport, or wallet would truly make this the jacket to beat. I really hope they release a more functional piece in the future.

    • @CameronO
      @CameronO  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally hear you, and if i'm honest even this many years in I won't say i'm 100% in love. The pockets being the big downside for me. I actually didn't know some had pockets, I'm certainly going to look into that so thank you! Deep down though I know this thing will last years and years and it is a lovely jacket, but as you say, the functionality does play on my mind and it isn't always my first choice when heading out. Though I'm excited how it will fit and look a long time down the track.

    • @jensrb50
      @jensrb50 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ask Alexander from noble house Germany .He added pockets for functionality and added length in the waist so you can wear them with low rise pants.( I don't understand the appeal to have a so short jacket that you freeze on the back ).The jackets were never intended for low rising pants they were for suspender flight pants .

      A2 jackets like the TheRealMcCoy, Eastman, Bill Kelso, etc. are very accurate reproductions of the original A2 military contract jackets. They are not supposed to have a pocket for any mobile or the likes. They are supposed to be as close as possible to the original. If someone is looking for a functional jacket from today´s point of view, then these jackets are simply the wrong choice.
      Then again, Shinki leather was sure not the first choice in war times...

    • @georgehaney9714
      @georgehaney9714 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@olgi2068 I understand they aim for true reproduction, but there doesn't seem to be many brands that obsess the materials and craftsmanship quite like The Real McCoy's. For willing buyers, they could, and in my opinion should, offer a jacket that has been updated to reflect modern utility. Everything suggested would have very minimal outward deviation from the original design. For someone like me, there's more intrinsic value knowing it can accommodate my needs than in experiencing the jacket exactly as a WWII pilot would. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I doubt it.

    • @olgi2068
      @olgi2068 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@georgehaney9714 You´r e not in a minority, quite the opposite. Most ppl wouldn´t care for accuracy of a repro. But there´s so many other brands that can provide you with your need that I simply don´t get the point of asking for RM to change their jackets so as to fit your requirements. It is like buying a true Willys Jeep, a Land Rover, or a BMX X5. Just pick the right item for you. Just to give you an example: Aero leather has an A2 repro and, as an interesting alternative, the "happy days" model that is built on the A2 shape but has handwarmer pockets and inside pockets.If you want excellent craftsmanship and the option to custom fit, simply look at Himel Bros, Aero Leather, Bill Kelso...
      I think my major point is, I find it rather disturbing that an iconic product gets changed in such way. It is a bit how we got from the iconic 911 Porsche to a lame Cayman or Cayenne. But that is just my opinion and there is no personal offense meant at all.

    I have an A-2 jacket made by Bill Kelso which I believe is a UK company but makes their jackets in Greece. They helped me order the correct size for the fit I wanted, it looks amazing and was well worth the wait (about 4 months for me). I love it because I am a pilot and aviation enthusiast and the jacket makes me look just like WWII air crews.
    I love that people are enthusiastic about extremely high-quality clothes that last a lifetime, and buying clothes you really love instead of settling for what's cheap. We forget that until very recently people used to buy few clothes that they'd wear for many years, but nowadays it's all about the companies profiting from selling extremely cheap, fragile clothes for much more than they cost to make. If someone has the money and is interested, they should support companies that make high-quality clothes to help them win against fast fashion.

    13:27 Very nice jacket indeed. I have the same one in size 40. The "grievance" of yours I believe is due to its design, something like it's being cut as in a shirt so that, actually, the front should overlap as if you're buttoning it up, like your shirt. I maybe wrong; just that's what I heard. Mine also look asymmetric viewed from front, one side kind of dangling and naturally stays lower than the other.

    if you wonder about the thickness apply coconut oil. that will make it nice a pliable even for horse leather or steerhide. I have a few jackets that I got for a steal secondhand, but hearing you don't wear it as often as you like to makes me sad. Even when the pricetag is that high. If you need a place to put your hands pair it with a hoodie and wear it regularly. Really fit you well but you won't wear it that often when your only are able to pair it with a t-shirt. That will change with the oil applied and later stretch out.

  • @mr.anti-hero4398
    @mr.anti-hero4398 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason you're having an inverted triangle when the jacket is unbuttoned is that the silhouette on the jacket is made in such a manner in which the chest-to-waist ratio is overly emphasized in a waist's favor. This is a deliberate move for the jacket to fit as many bodies as possible, and the reason the cut is unflattering is due to waist measurement is way too large when compared to the chest.
    Taking your jacket to a tailor to reduce the size of the waist would improve the fit drastically.
    However, by doing so you'll get a better fit, but the value of the piece will go down, and you might not be able to sell it for the fraction of the price you've bought it--so keep that in mind.
    Chest will stretch, but not so drastically that changes in the fit shall be visible. It'll more conform to your body than it'll stretch.
    But you're probably reaching the given conclusion by your own reasoning, accounting for the experience wearin' |t.
    Good L!

      The jacket is far from bad--there's no arguing about it. Quality is top-notch, the coloring is made perfectly, and the fit is far from bad, but the paradox of getting into fashion is stated down below:
      The more you're investing in clothes, the more you notice what works with your proportions--- and what doesn't work as well.
      That's a good thing, but it's also quite problematic, as you develop an emotional connection to the fits you like because those emphasize the shape of your body in such a manner in which you get positive feedback from broader society, which in return makes you feel pretty good about yourself.
      The problem emerges as once you know what fits you perfectly, you'll get way more rigid and strict, and everything which doesn't fot close to a perfection just isn't good enough, even if the fit is fairly decent. At that point, you notice every tiny detail, and you cannot get over it; it bothers you, and it's gonna keep going on y nerves.
      Happened to me before. Bought a good, functional quality piece, and fitted fairly decent, but never quite liked it. Stayed in the closet more than I wore it.
      Later, I bought cheaper alternatives with a better fit.
      Nowadays, I'm getting my jacket MTM. I'm quite strict when it comes to jacket length (like a slightly more cropped look).

      Hey Louis, Yeah, i generally am 42. I have 42 in flannels and one or two other things (i'll post later). But I make a habit of measuring now. I just got a chore coat and I'm a 44.. Though also depends if i want it to have a shirt under or something thicker. I'll post the chore overshirt video this week. Might also do a video on all my jackets soon.. Thanks for watching!

      I know I am a bit late with this comment, but hope it help anyway. I just got a European made repro A2, made to the original specs. WWII cut is not that comfortable to what we are used to today - I am a XL, but got mine in XXL, and it it still snug. Part of the design, of course, but something to keep in mind.

      Beautiful thank you for reporting back. You got a really nice fit. In terms of how it fits on your waist, it’s the ribbing that will stretch as you wear it. If you were to have more room at the bottom it would look like an bag. It’s just the style of the jacket.

    Very nice video! I have owned so many real McCoy’s items, and have the same jacket and an an-j-3a. both are lovely but the temperature issue is real! If you’re looking for fun and functional, take a look at Belstaff, I also have many many belstaff jackets and they cater to more every day use. Also have history and classic styling depending on what you get (or check out matchless, which is the old belstaff owners)
