I REFUSE TO CALL HIM TEE-DUS 😤 Nah I appreciate everyone clearing that up for me, but they missed a golden opportunity to call him TIDE-us! Thematically it was right there for them…
the issue with kimahri is that he is a jack of all trades, to fit every role. he is the second character to get piercing weapons, which is massive, he can also become your first thief, since he can reach rikku's grid long before she trully joins the team. however, this are things you dont really get the feel for until later replays.
I can't shake the feeling that exams quickly followed the plot of FFVIII. Imagine taking down a sorceress from the future, THEN having final exams. Haha
Honestly, I think how the characters referred to Tidus, without even directly calling him by his name is a product of even the devs not even agreeing on how to pronounce his name. Also, the FFX-2 Sisterhood was just something else. I completed Last Mission recently, and the montage of both games was such a tear jerker.
I knew a kid named Tidus in school, might've been Titus never saw his name written, but it was pronounced Tide us, and upon hearing about teedus he said "thats stupid.". Shits a core memory for whatever reason

Square isn’t pronouncing it wrong. It is Tee-dus. The name is derived from the okinawan word "Tida“ which means "Sun“. Square gave Yuna her name because they claimed it‘s the okinawan word for "moon“. That turned out to be not true. The correct word for "Moon“ is "tsuki“. So yeah, that’s some background. :]

FFX and 7 (OG) are pretty much equally liked by me and they are my favorites. If we're talking about the vanilla games, I'd probably give the edge to FFX, but FF7 has some cool mods on PC that can make it an even better experience.
Hi Mack - Tidus' name in Japanese (the origin of the game) is ティーダ, which is Romanized as Tida and pronounced in English as TEE-DA. Official games that use voice acting pronounce the name as TEE-DA in Japanese and TEE-DUS in English. Another fun fact - his name is the Okinawan word for "Sun".
The reason for it being Tee-dus is it's a localisation of a Japanese name not an English one, so the theming comes form the Japanese word used. His original name is Tīda (ティーダ), based on the Okinawan word for "sun", "tida".
You're getting the benefit of the original graphics, too - the remaster messed around with the eyes. I love FFX - not my personal favourite but it's definitely up there. Really glad you enjoyed it. Hate to break it to you but 'Tee-dus' is the official pronunciation...
@@ridleyrage5283 Yeah, Tide-us would make a lot of sense. But the devs being Japanese probably means they didn't even notice how fitting it'd be for the name to be spoken that way.
It's interesting you brought up how facial animations can look stiff in the original ps2 version. They're even worse in the HD remaster. Apparently they had to recreate the faces from the ground up and they completely botched it. There are so many subtle expressions Tidus would make in the original that are just lost in the HD remaster. His face literally doesn't move as well in the newer version. Playing the original ps2 version running on an emulator at 4k resolution is the definitive way to play in 2024 imo
X is and will forever be great, its one of the most non-divisive FF titles. Back in my day, I had a PS2 legendary 5500+ hour file with everyone's Celestial weapons with Crests and Sigils, FOUR sets of ultimate armors for everyone and, I held the world record for 551 lightning bolts dodged in a row without the crater trick. FFX is so good. Its relatable while remaining fantasy, the characters are well developed and have deep, meaningful arcs, the world of Spira is interesting, the battle system's some of the best it had ever been, this is one where if you had to point out the flaws, besides the side-quests for some of the Celestial weapon sigils, you'd kinda be hard-pressed to find. I'm bias to FFX and proud of it, I love FFX!
The Aesthetic theme of FF10 is based on Okinawa... the colors, the setting, the costumes, everything is based on Okinawan culture, and Tide-es is his name, I don't care what anyone else thinks, Tidus is Tide-es.
It's kind of funny that you acknowledge the Okinawan theming, but then actively ignore the fact that the Tee-dus pronunciation comes from an Okinawan dialect word. Totally fine to prefer reading it like water is the theme of his name, but the devs intended this sunshine boy to have a name that means sun.
They have a remaster of final fantasy 10 on the PS4 and Final Fantasy 8 is really good imo and they have a remaster for that as well. I think it's on the PlayStation store now.

Plus the character development is just magical, from Freya constantly pining for Sir Fratley only to finally meet him where he tells her "New phone, who did?" to Amarant grumbling about kids to Steiner repeatedly telling the player that he feels conflicted only to immediately ignore the conflict, all the way to Garnet spending half of the game mute which creates such a rich environment for character development.
