    I bought it after I saw this video 5 years ago, must say, it hooked me onto the hobby, today I am upgrading to a 1/10 scaler, this little fellow has taught me a lot and it will always have a special place in my heart. When I saw the video in my recommended today, I had to write this comment. Love the content

    Another well done review Ryan. Of all the vehicles of this size that you've tested, this one seemed the most competent. I never saw it flip over or get totally stuck.
    Yet I have to agree that it's inexcusable to not include a wall charger.
    Thanks for your review.

      Going with that it is not my first rc. I had a kyosho usa1 as my first truck when i was way to you g to have an rc of that complicated caliber. I then fell out of the hobby till i was in my 20’s and got a traxxas stampede that to this day is not a stampede anymore. Its a hybrid indestructable beast that well.. still destroy. I was a little ashamed at how fast i broke this truck and am searching for aluminum upgrade bulkheads. But damn this truck is sooooo fun

    The smaller scale 4x4s often have that clicking under heavy acceleration, and such. The differentials need to be shimmed, cause they don't make perfect contact with the drive gear.

    This little truck jumps really well.Crazy how stable it is in the air. I've also heard that clicking in other Teton's. Same clicking in Aussie RC PLayground speedweek video

  • @Matthew002262
    @Matthew002262 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dont worry about the clicking noise get a toothpick/needle and clean out the pinion gear and spur gear near the motor the noise is caused by rocks getting jammed in the gears between the spur and pinion gears ive owned small traxxas electric cars for awhile and that tends to happen a lot

    When I first got mine it started clicking as well, I ignored it like you but eventually the back wheels wouldn't even turn. Its the spider gears in the differential were breaking! These things are so tiny and are made out of plastic so you would expect it. Only if they made the diffs metal :(

  • @351mrclean
    @351mrclean 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ryan, excellent review of a nicely made and fun truck. I miss your comments on yaw rate and lights out flying to see the LEDs, though. Here is a challenge for you: Traxxas has brushless upgrades for all of their RC trucks I've ever seen (I own a few). How 'bout a review of a brushless upgrade on this truck? That would make it fly!

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      351mrclean Air vehicle reviews will be back soon. I haven't seen a brushless upgrade for this truck. Maybe Traxxas does that will actual Traxxas models, but I don't think they've done it for the LaTrax line.

  • @CharlesFlahertyB
    @CharlesFlahertyB 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got a 1/16 Traxxas Slash and it came with the same type car charger. It only takes about 20 minutes to charge the NIMH batteries that come with the Slash and it's nice you can charge in you car. However, having to spend an extra $20 so I can charge with a wall outlet was pretty annoying.

  • @aaronmcclure1676
    @aaronmcclure1676 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    that sound is probably your spur gear take a small flat head screw driver and slide back and forth between the groves and you'll probably see a rough spot just use the screw driver to smoother out of happens to me all the time with the plastic ones

  • @jonnycox9934
    @jonnycox9934 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I thing that clicking noise was a leaf getting stuck in either the wheel hub or the gears.

    i really couldn't decide between the ecx ruckus 1/18 & the teton.. im swayed by the teton as it appears to have a far better build quality? whats your advice Flyin Ryan?

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wouldn't say that the Teton appears "far better" build quality, but I do think I liked the Teton overall better. The Ruckus sort of seemed like it might be more durable, but I really don't know.

  • @Lunchbiz

    Going to say tiny pebble in the spur gear, if thats the case pretty annoying if it is sealed up and requires major disassembly. I know it is a different car but its bigger brother Slash is prone to that. Otherwise cute little car and great review as always.

    I have one. Love it. I run on 2 cell with the replacement motor from team associated. I hear ya about the stupid included charger. Hate it. I have no idea what Traxxas was thinking. The only thing I don't like its the steering. Seems to bump around a lot and randomly change direction. Good job bro!

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matthew Fant Hey bud! Hmm, I didn't have that steering issue with this one, that I noticed anyway. But I did have that issue with my Dromida DB4.18.

    • @MatthewFant
      @MatthewFant 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a possibility they fixed it on this later model. I bought it right when it came out. And shockingly, this vehicle, and my latrax alias, are the two vehicles, which lit my love and obsession of rc ablaze again. 11+ later, lol.

    great video. Especially for someone who's looking to get into rc cars.
    love the waterproof feature which makes it all seasonal.
    Just bought a toy grade (gravity dune blaster) on sale for $40 regular $100. So I thought it was worth it as hobby grade ones always seemed out of my price range for what I want it for. However, this one is affordable so I may try it out.
    cheers....subbed.

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you found my review helpful! :) I have reviews of quite a few affordable models, if you want to browse through my playlists and see what catches your eye. If you're willing to buy from Chinese stores, you can actually get some pretty good RCs for very reasonable prices.

    • @S_Mendez_28
      @S_Mendez_28 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flyin' Ryan RC I use those sites quite a bit (dhgate, aliexpress, dealextreme etc. ) but I always thought they were cheap dollar store cars. Lmao
      Being that this is an entry level model for the hobby grade category, would you consider it to be less modifiable/upgradable?
      e.g, could I get a brushless motor for it and a higher cell battery?.....if that makes sense. (still learning the nitty gritty lol)

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure if there are brushless upgrades for this one or not. But, you can pretty much always do that sort of stuff if you are crafty enough, and know how to build the stuff yourself. But as far as LaTrax-branded upgrades, that you can easily just install, I don't think they have anything like that for this one. You also have to consider that making upgrades like that also leads to more broken parts, so you'd also likely be looking at making a lot of metal part upgrades in order to handle the increased speed and power. The way I see it, the effort isn't worth it, so I'd just suggest getting a model that is brushless right out of the box when you're ready for that step. As for stores, Banngood.com and GearBest.com are my main go-to stores for Chinese RCs, and you can get everything from dollar store toy-grade level stuff, to full-on hobby-grade RCs.

    Just purchased one for my one of my little daughters..Tower hobbies..$129.00 then used a $20 reward coupon figured cant go wrong for $110. Once its here I'm going to look into doing a battery swap with one with a traxxas ID conector out that will work with the traxxas e-z charger..is this a option and which non lipo would you recommend..I would also have to switch out the male clip on the ESC as well or get a adaptor? Never seen one hands on yet..

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Instead of doing all that work, why not just buy the wall adapter for the charger for the battery it comes with? traxxas.com/products/parts/2976

      Steve S I wouldn't say "most of us", especially when it comes to these entry-level RTR 1:18 models. I would imagine most buyers are first-time owners, or at least not to the point of having their own chargers, etc, thus I think that was a very important aspect of this model to discuss. I was also making a point to Traxxas/LaTrax, should they actually watch this review. :)

      Flyin' Ryan RC I took the line from another RC review channel. Plus I believe it's important to share with those considering RCs as a hobby to understand there are alternatives to 3-6 hour wall chargers.
      BTW, did you look at the LaTrax site? They are marketing the charger as "charging on-the-go".
      Thank you for the reply Ryan! :-)
      I'm not trying to be difficult and I appreciate your time and effort into great reviews!

    Hey Ryan! are you ever gonna do a bigger car? or an fpv build would be awesome to see.

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arjen Hartink Possibly a bigger car, but not like an FPV build. I am a reviewer, so I try to stick to things that *need* reviews, which is usually the cheaper RTR/RTF stuff. Builds don't make for good reviews, as the builder has a lot to do with the quality of the build. And I hate building RCs. I did it once when I was younger and never want to do it again. heh

    • @theimacman

      No that's not true at all. The LiPo has a faster output rate and will always be faster than NiMH. It is a bit worrying that your hobby shop is giving such incorrect information. heh

    I'm an avid RCist. Hove several high end trucks, boats, and helicopters. My 5 year old runs my mini vxl slash on trainer mode. his birthday is coming up and he wants a car of his own. I seen this and it looks like it might be a good beginner car for a young child. the charger thing is ridiculous but I have several chargers so not a show stopper. How is durability and part availability?

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems pretty durable to me, but I am not sure about that sound that appeared towards the end of my run review. Part availability is great, as this is backed by Traxxas. :)

    You ever figure out what the clicking was? Mine turned out to be the spider gears in the diff. Cheap fix, but a bit of a pain to take apart.

    • @theimacman
      @theimacman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Fant I'm thinking it may be a gear issue, since it sounds so consistent in rhythm. If it was a rock, or something like that, I would think the clicking would be more sporadic. I'm just gonna sort of ignore it until something breaks, I think. lol

    • @MatthewFant
      @MatthewFant 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I did that too. For awhile. I drove this little Teton like I stole it for awhile, and so did my son. Then one random day, that sound appeared, and wouldn't stop. So I went on the traxxas forum, and found the issue, at least in my case. If you want to make the clicking go away, this is the part you'll need:
      www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDSHZ&P=Z
      The problem is that the ring and pinion in the Teton are made of metal, but the diff gears are made from plastic and wear easily. Use the metal ring and pinion that are in the Teton, and do not replace them with the plastic ones in the kit. These are the pieces that you re use or simply replace as well.
      www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEDKX&P=M
      It's a fun little truck, and parts are pretty cheap :-) Unlike 1/8 scale rc's

      J777 They are probably pretty similar, so which you choose would be based on which design you like more, and what sort of surface(s) you want to drive on. The Teton has more ground clearance and therefore would be better on rough offroad terrain, whereas the SST is more for smooth surfaces and dirt roads.

      It may be a bit too fast for someone that young, at least until they get the hang of it. You might be better off looking at a model that has dual rates, so you could turn the speed way down at first and let him get used to it. I believe the Dromida models all have DR.

      That Guy With the Pointlessly Long Username That You Are Wasting Your Time Reading Right Now I've considered that, but I don't know. Those seems like weird options... if you're going to go for that size, do it right and get brushless and 4X4. I have the Stampede 4X4 VXL, but got it before I started doing reviews, and it's too old and beat up to review now. But, anyway, I feel like these 1:18 scale vehicles are more needing of reviews and are the more likely choices for people in this budget range. I don't really understand why anyone would buy those cheaper Traxxas vehicles, unless they are going to upgrade them over time or something. Either way, they seem a bit pointless to review, but I don't know... maybe I will keep them in the back of my mind. :)
