Thank you! This is the best video I’ve found for telling exactly what to look for in figuring out which ones are ripe. You’d think it would be easy information to find...😂
Thanks for taking time to post, without a bunch of blabbing and shaky camera work. :-) It's a real dance trying to figure out the latest possible time to pick for maximum sweetness. I've been watching the tendrils get brown, and trying to get a day-count after they brown to when the melon goes bad. This is my second year of growing melons, so I'm still trying to get it right. (picked too soon last year)....
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed the video. I am really curious to how many days it takes for a melon to go bad... I wonder how temperature and weather affect that?!
I'm growing a sugar baby on my desk at work... The melon is deep green with a yellow base and I can't find a tendril opposite it. But it's only the size of a baseball... I'm guessing my plant must be really stressed? Is the melon done?
Great video. I could not find a tendril to check if the melon was ready but there is a pretty deep yellow spot. Do yo think it is ready? I have two other questions: How did you get your vines to produce so many watermelons? and, is there a way besides a fence to keep animals like squirrels, chipmunks or deer from eating the leaves of my Sugar Baby plants? The leaves started being eaten after a heavy rain this week. Thanks!
Hey! Your watermelon is possibly ready. I would check the size and the sound of your melon compared to the other melons in your garden. For me I just covered the soil with a big layer of wood chips, companion planted A LOT, and would through kitchen scraps out when we had them. Take care of the soil and the soil will take care of you. As far as your plants being foraged on you can try and use a netting over top of the plants to help keep critters off of them. Good Luck!
I am wondering if you grow on a trellis, is there an addition "ripeness" sign to watch for aside from the yellow belly spot? Maybe the noise is a good option, but curious if there was anything else. Great video.
Hey Tristin! The tendril dying and the color darkening should be some really good indicators. You could use a scale (if you know the mature weight of the watermelon), but I couldn't see that being reliable. Have an awesome day!
Best melon for a trellis, but you must watch that tendril. It must be completely dry. I grew about 20 on trellis last year, and no hangers. I was surprised that they could support themselves. But I say it's not the best melon to grow. It's a hit and miss melon. Great when right really heartbreaking when wrong.
That curling tendril was not completely dry, partial but not completely dry. It's tough to do but the top part of it was dry but it needs to be that dry on all of it. " A dried curling tendril" .
Lol u said u leave the unripe ones for the birds as thank you lol to those little fs starts eating your tomatos I'm having a big problem with them eating tomatos
Never had an issue with birds eating tomatoes. 99% of the time birds eat fruit for the water content. A simple solution is too put a bird bath out. But even if they did eat my tomatoes that is still a good trade in my opinion because of all the insect control they provide. Good luck!
I usually find 2-3 months (60-90 days) is the sweet spot, but it will totally depend on weather conditions and the care you give the plants! Good luck!
Thank you for sharing! I feel like a pro knowing when my first sugar baby watermelon will be ready!
Absolutely! Glad you enjoyed the video!

Thank you so much! I will keep those in mind and will find out this summer. I agree the weight wouldn't be reliable. Thanks again.
