Hi friends! Thanks for your patience with the delay in content recently. BTW, want to grow Watermelons too? Check out this video I made ;) th-cam.com/video/md0as5LQPHs/w-d-xo.html Have a great day :) -Kalem
Great video start to finish. Giving me a lot of confidence as I try my hand at growing my own fruits and vegetables, etc. Excited to get started!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Have you tried ' Piel del Sapo ' - (spel?) these are a larger oval melon, and man they are so sweet, but have a firm texture and the flavour of almost burnt sugar/mollasses/ candy floss -like OHHH RIDICULOUS!!! cant recommend enough, you will go nuts !
@TheKiwiGrower hope you're doing well! Thanks so much for new video, documenting everything starting from soil preparation and seed to taste test, that requires dedication. As always, great job Kalem!
It's indeed a forgotten pasttime Many elderly i work with had a veggie garden all their lives. It became way less common within the generation of their kids :/
Melons here in Perth Australia are 7:90 each….😮 Watermelons are almost $5kg a kilo… insane prices… growing them at home this season Thanks for the awesome tips on how to grow these ❤
When I was a kid growing up in the 1950s, the local produce market would have their watermelons floating in a gigantic stock tank along with blocks of ice to cool them. They sold for 2c per lb.! Most of those melons were huge. A 20 lb melon was not unusual. One farming community in our state was the largest producer of cantaloupes in the country (US). The growers would drive up with their pickup trucks filled to the brim with melons. They would park on the side of the road and sell them out of their trucks for 3 or 4 for $1. depending on the size. Small ones were 5/$1. If you found some at 2/$1, they were the size of a football!
Here's an organic pesticide recipe I use to drive off any kind of slug or snail, plus most caterpillars, aphids and a few other small bugs: 10g of black pepper powder + 10g of hot chilly powder (or 2-3 chopped chilly peppers) + 1 garlic clove (crushed) per 1 liter of plain (tap) water (in imperial units that'd be roughly 1.5 ounces from each powder per gallon of water) boiled for 5 minutes, than left to cool down and settle. Strain out the solids through a fine filter and spray the liquid all over the plants (including flowers or fruits). It's 100% safe on any kind of plant from vegetables to fruit trees, doesn't hurt honey bees (and similar pollinators) and kills most of the aforementioned pests on contact in a matter of minutes, but unfortunately it doesn't last more than a few days before degrading, so you must reapply it about once a week if you see any parasites creeping back. If you want some (mild) antibacterial effect as well you can add cinnamon powder into the mix (5g/l). The only risk to humans comes from accidental contact with your eyes or nose, as it's basically pepper spray, but although painful it won't do any real harm (just was with plenty of water, the pain will subside in a few minutes). A simple face mask and goggles can easily prevent this.
Great episode! I love being in a field of ripe melons just before harvest when they smell so sweet and strong. I really want to try the canary melon now.
i remember u when u were just a kid..the video that make u famous with me was how to grow coconuts...what happen to the cackatoo bird? U are proof that when a young kid loves nature, shows interest in growing plants, animals and nature definetly will grow up to be an awesome farmer!!
I totally agree about those melons, the canary melons are my favorite! I love the taste of a really well ripened one. Sadly you don't always get those at the supermarket, but when you do it's so wonderful. Also so surreal seeing the elder tree bloom behind you right now, as we've just experienced a very early snow and oh so dark November. Cheers!
Kalem! Perfect timing. I saved some seeds this Summer from a particularly delicious cantaloupe. I'm very fortunate living in Northern Indiana, that we can grow many fruits, and the most delicious Cantaloupe ever is grown in Southern Indiana. It's funny you called them "mushy," as the colloquial name for them here is "Mush Melon!"
I agree with your preference for firm canteloupe . . . perhaps not your preference for sweet, sweet flesh. That is something I would have liked as a kid. Here in the American Southwest canteloupes are a must-have, like tomatoes, okra and black-eyed peas. Your video appeals both to the brain and the senses . . . good job.
Hello from the US west coast. I've never seen (or even heard of) a canary melon. Maybe a specialty market would have one, but typically all I see in the various supermarkets I go to are cantaloupes, watermelons, honeydews, and sometimes kiwano melons. If I ever see one, I'll try it.
I love the canary melon, or honey melon as they are called in dutch. A really common melon here as well, loved for its honey like sweetness. It's my favourite melon. Especially the "dino egg" variety, which is more expensive and smaller but it's so delicious
In the Philippines, we use the pulp around the seeds plus sugar to make melon juice. Then we cut up the flesh and add that as well. They're really tasty!
In France we eat quite a lot of cantaloupe melons, but they are harvested way earlier in the year than yours, usually early to mid summer is peak cantaloupe season, and they are really ripe and sweet, not watery or anything, so maybe they are started earlier in the year I'm not sure, I was really surprised that yours were ready only in early autumn
The cantaloupe and canary melons they sell at my local (Washington state, US) grocery store are very good, while they are in season. Sorry to hear that you can’t buy good ones where you are, but growing sounds awesome!
Hi Kalem what melons are you growing this year? Are you trying Georgia Rattlesnake again? I have been trying to find the seeds. I am in the Waikato. 🍉🍈
Hello, I am following you, cause even that I live in Canada, but I am crasy about tropical fruits gardening, and trying my best. But I am wondering what is the gardening Zone in your area. Please. Thanks.
Awesome crop! How far away from each other did you plant the two varieties? I wonder if it’s planted right next to each other, if the fruit would be affected due to cross-pollination?
I have so much trouble growing them, for example seedlings stay slightly yellowish and small, or they get infested with aphids.. Shocked by how perfect your melons are, I really wish I knew how to get those kinds of results
Does anyone else get an itchy mouth from orange colored fruit? For me cantaloupe, oranges and carrots make my mouth itchy. I think it is called OAS (oral allergy syndrome) but I have never bothered to get tested. Thanks for the content and again for taking endless months to produce the produce and content.
Would it be too late to start them now? I direct sowed my mini gold water melons about a month ago, my second attempt, last year i just got 1, i tried the stars and moon too but got nothing.
I grew those one year in Texas. The rats and raccoons loved them but I didn’t like the taste. I prefer the musk melons we call Cantaloupe in the US. I also like the Israeli melon. Very sweet w/ pale green flesh.
Have you ever thought of selling your own line of seeds?? If you would do that and ship internationally I would buy some for sure. Just a thought! ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing how you don't seem to have pickleworms. I can't plant melons cucumbers or squash because of pickleworms. I was using BT but rain just washes it off so it doesn't work and it's too much work to cover them every night
I made the mistake of letting cantaloupes sprawl on the ground. All of the plants ended up with mold. It's ironic too, because I got a nearly 100% germination rate from seeds from store bought melons.
Those seeds took way too long to germinate, you can have plants like those in about 5 days. What you need to do is snip off the sharp pointy edge of the seed, soak in warm water of 32 Deg Celsius for 8hrs, then take seeds out, cover with kitchen towel in a container. They will germinate that same 24hrs, plant them and a few days later youll have plants
Hey bro, just an FYI that the camera rotation/pan while you're standing in the plants at the start and the end is really nauseating. Great content otherwise, as always!
Awesome! Your reaction to the Canary was the same as mine (LOL). Most people seem to prefer my Charentaise or Cantaloup, but it's the firmness of the Canary that makes it so good. Have you tried melon with cheese?

@@TheSSoSS I haven't but that sounds amazing!
Kalem enjoying his melons - life is good this day !
The best time about winter in Ireland is summer down there and his tank tops ❤
Gardening and growing your own produce is so underrated.
Agreed!

Great Kiwi content.
It is so fantastic to see how many different foods grow in your garden! 🥰 Thank you for another wonderful video. 😊

Those melons look incredible! 😍🙌🍈

You are so right. I really miss being able to grow my own cantelopes and musk mellons here in Virginia USA. Thanks for the memories. Sam
It’s such a dream to live and grow your own food wow
Hello bosss finally a video 😁
I enjoy your channel very much!!
Great video! I really was envious of your taste tests ;-)

Another video inspiring me to get in the garden more, thanks Kalem!

Did you use your own seeds from a previous year. ? If no , where did you buy the Canary Yellow seeds ? V. good video

My mum used to put juice through sieve and add it back to chopped up melon 😊
In the Philippines, we use the pulp around the seeds plus sugar to make melon juice. Then we cut up the flesh and add that as well. They're really tasty!
Nice! Can't wait to plant some melons when we get our land 😀
canary melons (just called "gular melónur" or yellow melons in icelandic), are by far icelanders most favorite melon
Thanks for the guide
Thanks man, allways helpful content! We on waiheke, where in nz are ya?
Nice, I’m in north Waikato region
I was dribbling watching this! 🤤🤤

Too late for this season but totally growing some next year. May I ask where you got the Canary seeds from?
Hermoso
Hi Kalem what melons are you growing this year? Are you trying Georgia Rattlesnake again? I have been trying to find the seeds. I am in the Waikato. 🍉🍈
Cute cat, nice melons
Awesome video! Canary melon is my favorite! 😍 have you tried “piel de sapo” melon?
Cheers, no I haven’t!
I have had problems with pukeko and pheasant had to net them on frames because they learnt how to jump on the low net and still get the fruit 😊
Mm, love rockmelons! REALLY want to try canary melons now.
same, wonder if its too late to start seeds now though
Hello, I am following you, cause even that I live in Canada, but I am crasy about tropical fruits gardening, and trying my best. But I am wondering what is the gardening Zone in your area. Please. Thanks.
I enjoyed this video❤ I wonder if I can get the canary melon here in S Africa
Hi, great video. Have just got my melon seeds in this week. Is that canary melon the Topaz F1 variety from kings seeds?
No these seeds came from a friend but I'm sure the one you mentioned will be great as well
BETTER HELP, are they available during NZ hours?
Yep
@TheKiwiGrower thank you 😊
I dislike purchasing cantaloupes in the store. All fruits in general. Try honey dew melon? Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed the vlog.
My garden is Soo full and he posted this 😢 can't neglect
Awesome crop! How far away from each other did you plant the two varieties? I wonder if it’s planted right next to each other, if the fruit would be affected due to cross-pollination?
They were planted right next to each other. It shouldn't affect the fruit, however there's a chance if the seeds are grown again they could be crossed
Hi Kalem could you please try to cross breed chillis plez plez
I have so much trouble growing them, for example seedlings stay slightly yellowish and small, or they get infested with aphids..
Shocked by how perfect your melons are, I really wish I knew how to get those kinds of results
Hello , do you sell seeds ?

If you ever pick these a little green you can always try pickling them!
Do your turkey boys fight? My two fight bad every spring...they do love melon seeds too
Hi there can you please tell me if you sell seeds? I'd love some canary melon seeds if you do
I suggest you plant the Charentais melon.
It's the number one. You'll thank me.
The canary melon is a lot like white shahtoot mulberry but juicier
Hi 😊
🙏🏼💕🙏🏼
Amazing how you don't seem to have pickleworms. I can't plant melons cucumbers or squash because of pickleworms. I was using BT but rain just washes it off so it doesn't work and it's too much work to cover them every night
don't you have to ruffle the roots to make sure they don't get rootbound?
Love the tash mate! A beard would be sooooo daddy 😂
I made the mistake of letting cantaloupes sprawl on the ground. All of the plants ended up with mold. It's ironic too, because I got a nearly 100% germination rate from seeds from store bought melons.
💚👍
Yes. Muskmelons >>>>> honeydew any day
😊😊🎉
I have an avocado. It is 1 year old and is as tall as me.
Hello
the stache🤰🏽
Those seeds took way too long to germinate, you can have plants like those in about 5 days. They will germinate that same 24hrs, plant them and a few days later youll have plants
was more concerned about smelling the mellons asshole than the 2 mellons at once
10:47 It looks exactly the way it was, you were just smelling some big juicy melons. ;)
10:45 Nothing like burying your face in a nice pair of melons!😉
Hey bro, just an FYI that the camera rotation/pan while you're standing in the plants at the start and the end is really nauseating. Great content otherwise, as always!

I don't eat cheese but it sounds like a good combo :)
So cool! I saw that 🪤. 😜
