@@CaliKim29 It's OK it's been happening so many years that I kinda get a kick out of it, I live in a very rural area and I really don't have time to fully protect my garden but that's ok all my animal buddies have to eat too! it's like they know that I'm going to pick them that day. haha They like em ripe too! My garden is nothing like yours I get busy in the summer and it gets weedy but I still get a lot of food out of it. ;-)

I grew sugar baby melon this year and I think I’m about a week away from harvesting my first one! It’s starting to get chilly over night so I may only get 1 or 2 this season but I’ll be happy no matter w hat!
Kim, your seeds are INCREDIBLE! The Red Russian Kales survived a Massachusetts winter and produced a gazillion seeds. As I was stuffing the branches of seeds into a bag, I purposely did it over a container of dirt to catch any that fell off. All of those, a gazillion more plants, came up in summer. Though these plants must have come from cold winters, they don't even need to get cold first. I particularly love the baby leaves, and use bigger leaves and stalks for sauces, gravies and soups. The mustard green plants produce leaves to harvest within a week of the former harvest...big leaves. I can't get over how productive your seeds are.

Funny, but there is always something special about harvesting a watermelon - even if you can't grow one yourself and must rely on watching someone else harvesting. ;-) It's just so mouthwatering!

I used this technique on mine and it was not ripe. I recommend waiting till the tendril falls off, or at least is brown like you said... And the next tendril over to the right and left, also brown 🟤

How many melons should you have on one plant? Should you remove melons if they are too many so the rest will grow better? Planting for firtst time this year. :)

6 - 8' trell is and space them 6-8"'s apart. Experiment, see how they respond, and go from there! That's the best way to see what and how you grow the best! Kim
@@CaliKim29 cool. I have an 8x8 trellis and was hoping to get about 6 plants to grow using it. I'm not sure if I want to take up that much space for what will only amount to maybe 18 melons for the whole year... if I'm lucky. I think I have a grow window from now until mid October, and maybe into November here.

What fertilizer did you use. I tried watermelon for the first time and the color was not as red as it should be - the way it is supposed to be. I figured maybe it was because I did not use fertilizer. What do you think?

How many melons should you have on one plant? Should you remove melons if they are too many so the rest will grow better? Planting for firtst time this year. :)

I would love to grow some this year. How/long of a trellis would I need, and how far apart should I space them?
6 - 8' trell is and space them 6-8"'s apart. Experiment, see how they respond, and go from there! That's the best way to see what and how you grow the best! Kim
@@CaliKim29 cool. I have an 8x8 trellis and was hoping to get about 6 plants to grow using it. I'm not sure if I want to take up that much space for what will only amount to maybe 18 melons for the whole year... if I'm lucky. I think I have a grow window from now until mid October, and maybe into November here.

My sugar baby is only about 4 wide across but has a brown tendril. Seems small. The last one at that size cracked. Do you have any advice?
Grew sugar baby watermelon in a container vertically, the melons were very small but tasted fantastic. Definitely not as big as yours Kim.

What fertilizer did you use. I tried watermelon for the first time and the color was not as red as it should be - the way it is supposed to be. I figured maybe it was because I did not use fertilizer. What do you think?
Hello mezmur - I use Good Dirt Plant Food, Vermisterra worm castings and worm tea, and Vitality (see this video for details, bit.ly/CaliKimHowToUseWormCastingsFeedYourGarden) once a month or so on all my garden beds. Regular feedings will make for healthier, more productive, more flavorful and more beautiful veggies. Thanks for watching!

How to ruin a watermelon. Add lime and salt. They are perfect as they are. Not to mention healthy. And you go and add something bad like salt. Gees.
