He played with a pick as a symbol of that. He loved Cliff as a fan and would never try to be him. Jason was Jason, and being Jason was AWESOME to the fans even if those idiots in the band were too busy being drunks and dope heads to realize it.
THAT IS NOT WHAT JAMES IS SAYING - NOT THAT HE WAS LESS OR MORE TALENTED - BUT THEY HAD LOST A BROTHER AND THAT LEFT A MASSIVE HOLE IN THEM ESPECIALLY JAMES - AND HERE IS A NEW KID TAKING THE SPOT THAT THEY WERE REALLY NOT READY OR EQUIPPED TO HANDLE - ITS NOT THAT CLIFF LEFT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER FOR THEM TO HANDLE THAN HIM DYING
@@kaliaparijat The beauty of music is that you don't have to be equal, you just have to be different. No great musician ever reached the top being "equal". They reached the top being different than what anyone had ever heard before.
Jason was the “metal” in Metallica. His being a fan was what made him great. He connected with the rest of the fans in the crowd and he respected what Metallica was. He deserved better.
🤨 They did 3 metal albums before Jason joined. 3 of their best albums too. Hell they even called themselves METALlica. I think of hard rock when I think of Jason. Nothing wrong with that.
He prolly wanted to leave after the justice tour…he was smart to stay and be good with his money…and that’s what he did , he didn’t waste it, invested it and when he finally said I’m done with these clowns, he amassed enough to never have to work again any smart person would of done that
James and Lars will never admit that in those 15 years, Jason was the heart/loved by fans. The charismatic, energetic and positivity to perform in the middle of wave after wave of bullying by James and Lars is definitely inspiring.
They know how much Jason meant to the band. While he was in Metallica Jason was the face of the band. He always had time for the fans. I've heard James say this in interviews.
Remember this is just part of the story, right at the very beggining of Jason comming in the band, James used to hang at Jason´s house when he got in the band, they got really close, they hated some stuff on him but eventually had to step backward and pay respect to the man. The full story of Jason and Metallica is full of stuff, not only "Jason was Hazed, bad James and Lars", but a lot of things he gave to the band, apreiation and even a time when Jason fucked up with the band and eventually became the pebble on Lars´s shoes in the mid 90´s.
Almost get angry when I hear this confession. Parts of me understand but in the same I think it is difficult to understand why the gave him so much shit. I think they unfan’ed him the day he left. He is the fan Metallica does not deserve. He is too good. Thank you Jason for all your time in Metallica, I was a big fan of that time.
He was the band's number one fan. He saw the magic from the outside and for whatever reason that made them uncomfortable. Having a fan in the band should've been another force to drive them to excel but they tried to bring him down and extinguish some of the mystery and be more businesslike. It's clear Jason loved the band and gave everything.
It's not hard to understand why Hammett, Hetfield & Ulrich acted the way they did, at all. Young people who were not equipped to deal with loss in a healthy way, Hammett and Hetfield coming from very broken backgrounds using alcohol and drugs. It's no wonder shit happened as it did. I find it weird that Metallica fans act like Jason was hard done by in the end. What they did wasn't right, and they know it, but Newstead knew what was going on all along and accepted it. That's on him.
I met James and Jason in Toronto on a cold winter night. My brother won tickets from a radio show for a small venue concert (very rare) and after the show James and Jason came walking out the back doors. We were trying to flag a taxi but instead we got our concert tickets signed and what a great laugh we had. James was sooo funny and Jason was super nice dude. I still have my autographed concert ticket but my brother Paul Pal passed away 3 yrs ago. My older brother was hardcore Metallica fan and still to this day it was the HIGH LIGHT of our young lives! RIP PAUL PAL @ Paul's funeral I cranked harvester of sorrow!! We had our last moments together with no regret!!!! FTW
@Nickhead87 excuse for what? What abuse? Did Metallica sexually molest Newstead? If so I hadn't heard about it. They gave him a proper hazing when he joined the band. Big f'n deal. Quit crying and move on with your life.
@Nickhead87 the worst thing they did to Newstead in my opinion is make his bass less audible on the And Justice for All album, and really that hurt the band's sound as a whole not just Newstead. Other than that I don't know what you're talking about. Then again I don't keep up with all the gossip surrounding bands like some of you fan club super fanboys do so maybe I'm missing something. Either way, Newstead owes the success of his career to the rest of Metallica. Any of you would kill to get to be a part of that band. Truth
Maybe Jason couldn't fill cliffs shoes but he was something Metallica really needed after Cliff, one amazing energybomb with brutal backing vocals! Imagine getting into a band and not being treated as a equal. It's not Jason's fault cliff died. Accidents happens and Jason showed up after Cliff. Jason did an amazing job! He was a big part of Metallica for me. Rob took Jason's place not after Jason died but METALLICA killed him. Thats just so sad. He didn't deserved this no matter what.
If I joined a huge band, I wouldn't personally expect to be treated as an equal right away, but I also wouldn't have tolerated the level of hazing Jason endured.
@@JaycRam I'm on you're side. I really think especially James and Lars really miss Jasons energy. They did a big mistake, i believe!METALLICA stills runs like a train but not with the same energy. For me they are like 3 members now.
I read in a book about the history behind Metallica’s songs that Jason was the last guy to audition. Someone has contacted Lars and before his audition the guy described Jason as “the business.” Yes he absolutely was. 100% metal and no one could have taken Cliff’s place as well as Jason. They essentially had their biggest fan as their bass player and instead of seeing that as a huge positive they punished him for it.
Thats exactly that. They couldn't stand his carisma and coolness, and his possible submissive atitude before them as his idols made easy for them to punish him.
Yep. They were ashamed of themselves after seeing Jason so full of joy to just get to be part of the band. It was all a privilege to him, but they had become entitled rock stars. They didn’t feel that joy anymore. Instead of embracing that newfound passion, learning from Jason, they tried to mock his joy so they wouldn’t have to face the truth.
@@JohnMegaton2062 They had just lost a very dear friend and the heart and soul of their band! The man who elevated their music like no one had ever done. They were young. They were traumatized. Kirk was going through hell from survivor's guilt. How can you even say something like 'entitled rock stars'? Please look up what had happened before you start siding with a professional victim.
@@carmenl163 Everyone knows what happened. Everyone knows they never got a chance to deal with Cliffs death. But motherfucking 15 years? Hazing/insulting/ignoring ideas/not even being one with the band. Nah this goes far beyond!! Lars and James have no excuses!!
Jason was the soul of that band, the passion and love of the music. That guy gave everything to the band. Live wise the band has never been the same. Jason was a force and greatly missed.
Stfu, James and Lars are the reason metallica exists. Without them two there's no metallica. Also Jason has his own band and non of you so called Jason fans showed up and support him. Now he's nothing, he should've been successful with his band.
@@capitanmilanesa2144he's speaking live wise he has to be because newsted to not contribute anything but performance to the band. He's very overrated.
You could hear Jason on Garage Days and also he is quite prominent on the Black Album. With Justice, yes he is buried in the mix but if you listen hard you can hear the bass guitar just a tiny bit. Live in concert, yes he did follow James, basically doubling him, which can be musically annoying to musicians, but the audience sure loved it!
Mr. Hetfield, you are the reason why I started listening to metal and play the guitar, but the way you treated Jason - in every, single aspect - is despicable to say the least. No matter how great of a performer you are, this stain will never go away.
I agree. I mean, for someone to mistreat a guy as cool as jason who was just glad to be there…that’s being a piece of human trash. It’s like a psychopath who looks at a cute kitten or puppy, sees little kids playing with it, and their reaction is to stomp it with their boot. If they can’t be happy then no one can. Then they laugh about it like the other person’s the idiot and their dumb assery is all just a big joke no one thinks is funny. No, it’s too real. That was James back then, and I hope to God no more. It’s hard for me to sympathize with people who pridefully refuse to deal with their own issues and then let it out on decent people around them like punching bags. It’s but by the grace of God we all aren’t the same I suppose, but it doesn’t make it any nicer to watch.
Get a grip dude; they made the guy a superstar and a millionaire if a little brotherly teasing and some banter is the cost for all of that then fuckin sign me up for it! you're overreacting
saw Metallica a few times during the Jason era and he was the only one at those shows who actually engaged with the fans, he would come down off the stage up to the barrier whilst still playing and high five the people in the front row, he had so much energy and just never stopped moving . have a lot of respect for Jason they just aren't the same band now
i went to a few too , my cousin was the guy that moved to the west coast with Jason so i always wanted to meet him . he didnt have much to say and kinda off by himself , James and Lars wer kinda Dicks but Kirk was really nice .
Jason is an example of a professional musician. He suffered the bad behavior of James and Lars, but he gave a lot to Metallica. He earned A LOT of money too. His mission was rough, but he proved his value very soon. However, this Echobrain joke, I believe, was the reason and not the cause of his departure from Metallica.
Well that's like the reality TV based world we live in today. Everything is a reaction. They are looking for a reaction from Robert.. lol.. He held a great poker face! It's like he's saying, "Ok, I'm not gonna say shit here or even react or give an expression."
Rob had quite a different background, He had hes own "thing" or "integrity" from the eccentric partyfunk-metal band Infectious Grooves. He thumb-slap the bass and played fast like Flea. So, the pressure of filling Cliffs shoes was kind of already bared with Jason.
James basically said here We actually didnt need a bass player anymore because nobody ever could replace cliff, so we were looking for a punching bag. And when we got bored with it, we ditched it. And Robert looking at James is like: Im glad i jumped onto train when these bad bad people were already mellowed down old fucks
I may get some hate from fans but for me he honored cliff’s place in the band and put the energy and adrenaline that Metallica has always had, plus he is and was an amazing musician as well. For me he was the perfect replacement without a doubt.
Let me tell you a story about Jason Newstead. Somebody broke into my house and stole both of my basses. A few days later I get a call from Jason's first wife Judy asking if I was gonna be home because they wanted to stop by for a visit. I said sure, come on by. They both show up at the door and Jason has a bass in his hand. Jason told me he heard what happened and he knew how it felt because the same thing happen to him while he was in Flotsam. He handed me the Bass and said this is yours. That man is Good People. He is always approachable and he talks to the fans when the rest of the band wont. Kirk used to tell me the jokes they would play on him all the time. When Jason announced that he was quitting the band I understood and never questioned it.
Holy sh*t, I’m jealous🙀 Jason is a real one for doing that. Sometimes only people who were being mistreated before know how important to give other people love😢
Jason never stopped being METALLICA especially in late 90s when the band was doing acoustic medley and that sort of thing which fans never wanted. He always expressed the soul of METALLICA through his attitude and amazing performance wearing the band’s T-shirt. That way he kept sending messages to us and THEM so that the band wouldn’t lose its identity. I was lucky to see his performance as METALLICA and sometimes I’m frustrated that what he did isn’t fully appreciated by fans and them.
I respect your viewpoint but how do you expect the biggest Metal band in the world to loose their identity??... Since their first album, especially after MoP they were already at the top of the game...
@@TheAdrenalineRush707 They lost it within themselves. Doesn't matter if the world new them as the biggest metal band. If anything that was the problem. It all went to there head.
I don’t think James and Lars have the balls to apologise in public about their behaviour, which is the only decent thing they could do. Their ego and guilt are getting in the way!
Why should they have to apologize in public ? They don't care about you and your feelings. These things need to be done in private, not for your perverted ego.
This is basically an apology.. he takes full responsibility for not being a great person to Jason.. and it just is what it is when he's replacing their lost friend
Jason always was the real focal point on stage in the heyday. When he had his shaved head on the sides and running around like a nut, he personified Metallica’s presence on stage. Absolutely stood out to me. Lars is stationary obviously and always active. Kirk is always seemingly in his own little world ripping riffs and of course James is the lead voice and guitarist but Jason was that dark side, deep guy on stage and the fact that he was the bass, the tones that hold it all together, made him a huge part live.
I like Robert but he is essentially a session musician within Metallica. Jason’s love of the band gave him real authenticity and he was a great performer
I think its awkward for him for 2 reasons: Metallica is past its commercial peak in a sense only Metallica fans listen to the band.... and Rob sorta got into the R/R HOF by proximity. In a way, he hasn't earned it. ....ar least that's how I would feel. Rob doesn't have an "identity" with the band.
It's how I feel. He is a seasoned musician up to par with MetallicA, but I always thought he is just that; a session bass player. Not MetallicA's bass player. Oddly enough, he has been with the band almost as long as Jason was... Yet it still feels like he just came as a replacement a few months ago.
Jason was a beast live, you cant find a live performance where Jason phoned it in. Great back up vocals and went the fuck off onstage, Jason gave it his all.
So they had the perfect replacement and instead of nurturing and building him up they just crumpled him up and threw him away. That says more about them than it does him.
Yeah. James needs to just own it. I have more respect for people who own their mistakes with no excuses. Any alternative path is based in fear. That takes a real man to do.
Yeah, you could tell, he's just hanging in there for the paycheck... lol. He was upset that he wrote all these basslines for the album, only to find out that Lars deemed that bass lines doesn't count as songwriting credit. lol. But he's just biting his tongue and hanging in there for the paycheck.
They spent so much time lamenting Cliff that they didn’t realize what they had with Jason. Cliff was a great songwriter and masterful as a fingerstyle bassist, but Jason’s energetic playing, backing vocals, and headbanging introduced a passionate ferocity that took their live performances to the next level. I think they were so jealous of his stage presence that their egos couldn’t handle it. Should have let him have his side project and encouraged him.
I think jealousy is the keyword there. They were grieving, but they “chose” to grieve the way they did. They were not forced to do so. They chose to take it out on him as an easy target and that is immoral. I think they definitely were jealous of jason‘s joy and energy to play in Metallica, because they had obviously lost that same passion. To be around him every day was a stark reminder of that reality. They could have learned from him, owned their problems and faults, but were too cowardly to do so. A lot of good lessons in there. It’s a crying shame they didn’t realize their mistakes in time to save the relationship because it would be something to see what Metallica would be today with Jason’s growing influence. Sadly, We’ll never know.
@@JohnMegaton2062 Not to mention Jason was more grounded and stable. His upbringing was totally different than James or Kirk. He wasn't broken. They were in misery and here comes Jason with his smiles and joy knowing he was going to play with his idols and they couldn't have that. We are going to beat you into misery because we are in misery. Why should you get it easy. We're going to make life in this band hard for you and every chance we get we will let you know you'll never be as good as Cliff. Just a bunch of young, grieving, miserable drunks who wanted to kill the joy of the dude who they felt only got lucky because their friend died.
I remember looking around at the audience during Creeping Death and all 25,000 of us were chanting DIE! DIE! DIE! And it was a surreal moment. Quite awesome.
None of the other guys really sound comfortable on the mic. Jason wasn't afraid to add little flavor moments to songs; creeping death being a notable example. Just the "MOTHER FUCKER DIE!" somehow added more weight to it. XD
Jason has had many opportunities to really go off on them but he has always approached the topic respectfully. I'm glad he got out when he did. If Cliff hadn't died I could imagine him getting sick of their shit and forming his own band. Full of bass distortion and effects that would be the center of the music. If only.
I hear you, but I honestly think a lot of their issues stemmed from Cliff’s death, and not dealing with it in healthy ways. I think James went off the deep end with booze from there forward and became a drunk essentially. I think a lot of his issues stemmed from the drinking.
Jason had "that certain something" that has been missing, ever since he left the band. Love Robert Trujillo, but Jason just took it to another level. What a shame.
Yeah, he was wild, agressive and he sang pretty good if you ask me. I mean, I love Rob, dont get me wrong, but Newsted was a lot more "metallicalike" and i rly liked him in Metallica.
Well said. Rob is a more reserved guy while Jason has the panache and drive it takes to be a band leader so that's why he has his own band. I don't think that, if ever Rob was to be fired or quit Metallica, he'd be the kind of guy to have his own band
"Do whatever you want to do." Wasn't that the issue, that he couldn't? Even James himself admitted in the past to having a strangle hold on his creative input. Sounds like James is rewriting history to make him look less guilty in some ways.
pjam1184 Look at any YT comment section whenever Metallica is discussed. It’s all ‘Jason was great, the rest of the band are douchebags’ They definitely are hearing it and have been for years. And nothing they say can undo it. Some Kind of Monster killed a part of them.
That isn't exactly what he means. Bass players can play with the guitar player or play against them. They can build tension or harmonize. Jason largely followed the guitar lines exactly. That is what James is saying. He was used to Cliff who approached his playing in an entirely different way than Jason. Neither way is more "right" than the other. It is just different ways to approach the instrument.
Jay Rott Newsted gave the songs what he felt they needed, not what he felt like playing. I don’t think Hetfield realised nor appreciated the difference.
First, I tend to believe that there is much more to this situation than what is being told. Jason Newsted has done solo work, joined another band, has other artistic projects, and seems really satisfied. Second, I am shocked that James would admit that he mistreated Jason. That is the first step to try and repair the relationship between the two, if that is possible.
Yeah James realized quite a bit later how controlling of a person he was and how he felt bad and Lars quite a bit later completely understood why Jason left
Great post on this video. I appreciate all the fan’s comments here showing love for Jason. Jason gave his very best and more to Metallica and they didn’t appreciate it until he was gone. Too bad they never apologized to him in time to ask him back. Too much pride at the time on James and Lars end.
I’d just once like to hear James says something like “I was being a dick and I going through personal issues. I’m really sorry about how I treated the guy. He didn’t deserve it. I was wrong.’ Which, despite all the positive change from James-change I love and admire...the man is an incredible human being...I don’t think he’s capable of yet. Which is sad, as he’s made so much progress and is someone I look up to. They drove Jason away, period. They explain it away and justify it-but they never, ever ACTUALLY say they are sorry. That’s what Jason needs to hear. It’s also the right thing to do.
And to be honest that's how you know they are terrible people. Him and Lars, even after the dude quits the band they find a way to put it on Jason instead of them. He literally starts with "He had incredible shoes to fill" 😂😂😂
''The person I respected the most disrespected me the most''. Jason Newsted on his departure from Metallica. In case someone doesn't know, that person is the guy who's talking here and talking about respect among other things.
I'm gonna go ahead and call complete bullshit on Jason choosing to only follow the guitar. If you listen to Jason's audition tapes (5 songs over two try outs) you hear a LOT of fills Cliff never did, and a lot of stuff Jason approached differently (that he never did again; fills or alternate approaches). If you listen to the bass lines in Garage days you hear that same energy and creativity from Jason. With the above two early audio examples of Jason's potential, I find it far fetched he regressed writing and playing creative bass lines. Especially when you add in the hazing Tallica fully admits to and bass level shaft on AJFA. Cliff shredded and had a voice within the band. Shame they never gave Jason a chance to do the same.
I was wondering just that. He wasn't allowed to do his thing, James wanted him to follow the guitar and years later he said Jason couldn't add anything. I'm not a Metallica expert, it's just what I saw continuously being said on Reddit.
You are not wrong, it was bullshit, before the AJFA there are interviews where James seems fond of Jason habilities, and where Lars seem jealous about it, the whole lack of bass on AJFA was that, jealousy from Lars, Lars tried to pull the same trick on the black album but Bob did not let him and the Load/Reload were mostly "written" by James and Lars, when Jason understood that his own music and contributions would not be accepted he started his solo projects... James and Lars insecurities where the reasons to all of this debacle, and they call that "grief" and "anger" wich is bullshit
It wasn't bittersweet for Jason joining Metallica initially. It became bittersweet when they started using and abusing him and not respecting what he brought to the table. All the way until the end. Jason is more Metallica than any other member in history.
I kinda disagree. It had to be bittersweet for Metallica when Jason joined because Cliff had just died a few months prior, and they were grieving. Jason was filling a really deep void that Cliff left when he died, and that’s hard, especially on your mind and spirit.
I fuckn loved Jason newstead. Greatest headbanger to ever live and he was amazing. Super fuckn cool ass guy and his contribution to the band was unparalleled for anybody joining a band while it was already primed up.
Never understood the "he was a fan, we didnt like that, so we decided to smack it outta him" You would think that being a fan would mean he would give 200% to the band and Jason did. Guess some people are hard to please.
It was ego and the dealing with Cliff's passing. When cliff died they didn't really have time to mourn. They had shows lined up and decided to keep the tour going. So when Jason entered the band they were saddened and upset that their buddy was gone and took it out on him. Maybe as a way to cope with his death. Also they were headlining shows and made their first music video with One. So their ego also got the best of them. Unfortunately Jason had to endure that and ultimately couldn't take it anymore.
I think he means, he should be an independent leader and add value to the table. Not necessarily, a follower which doesn't help from creative ideas perspective.
I mean, it's easy to understand. They wanted him to be one of them. Not treat them as anything else other than his bandmates. It's not about the other guys being hard to please.
According to Dave Mustaine in his first book, James treated Ron (the guy before Cliff) like shit. Per the book. James and Ron went waaay back even before meeting Lars. Ron provided the practice place in his house. He was one of those dudes that was well off and provided a place for them to jam and everything.
@Shockheadd45 dno about this. Hammett had a part to play for his decline in the live show - and he also has consistently written in my view some of the most iconic Metallica riffs, ones that stand out, a la Newsted's Blackened. Even if they wanted to suppress him, they couldn't really.
Most band members have their times of not getting along with each other, and this isn't the biggest example. Remember the drama with Van Halen or Oasis?
Jason had the impossible mission and actually pulled it off and really became what everyone in the comments describes. He was amazing in Metallica and a joy to watch! His passion was OUR passion.
maybe James and Lars can just come out and say "we were dicks for being too controlling and not letting Jason actually stand out" Apologize and let it be done. we all know what happened and Jason just deserves the Apology. if they weren't ready for someone new, why continue so soon after Cliff. Jason did Better with the Pressure then the rest of the Band seemed to.
Well his pressure was incredibly different then theirs, his was filling a legends shoes while that legends friends try and keep him down, theirs was losing a lifelong friend so soon in your lives and career, and Kirk especially could've just as easily been the one, so his pressure was certainly harsh and very unwarranted, but you can't compare it to what is akin to losing your brother.
@@allhandsondik7803 @AllHandsOnDik that may be true, the Differences in the Pressures felt. But, i would say if your not in the place to let someone new do the work you hired him to do. they may have been better served waiting until they were and not working instead of stifling someone by tuning him out and demanding he stand on his own at the same time. the Band wasn't in a place to let someone else in, and 'in Justice' suffered for it. doesn't change the fact that they should Apologize and let it go. Metallica has a reputation for Petty Mistreatments that go unsaid. it would go along way i think to Man up to one and own it. like your Observation though.
I really doubt after so many years since Jason left the band he didn't receive an apology from them, especially since he was inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame because they wanted him there and when Hardwired was released Jason said only good things about it and that he would like to do a project with metallica.
@@Maria-cp4sq Metallica can play the grief card all they want but they spend more than 10 years picking on Jason and Jason was an absolute professional. Jason never say bad things from them and when they realised Jason was out and it affected them they never were humble to sit and talk to Jason. Actually part of their documentary mocks Jason cause he get out.
In retrospect, Jason had a lot of class that most musicians lack to show respect to the fans. True, Jason was goofy enough to repel most of the bad vibes directed at him, which is what made him a lot stronger and a force that represented the spirit of the band. You can see it and hear it in his voice on most interviews, fame and money did not get to him, he stayed very humble despite the nature of the beast he was riding.😜👍
I will never forget the scene from their Black album documentary where Jason was boxing up some food from the spread to take back to the hotel to eat later. He said he had plans for the money he made rather than blow it on excess like most rock stars. I was impressed and it stuck with me. That represented true Metallica fans…and James sat to the side making fun of his attitude about it. He might as well have made fun of his entire fan base there. Guess what bro? That’s the real world. I think that scene summed up the difference in the two: the difference in a life of gratitude and one of entitlement. After that I understood what Jason had to put up with and lost respect for James. We should pay close attention to what we find ourselves laughing at. It says more than we may realize about us.
Tarek’s right bro, if you ever seen the movie “ some kind of monster “ it’s about attitude and having a hard attitude. Jason was just as goofy as James was, and Kirk was kinda flaky at times. Lars being where he’s from had a more proper way to speak with a harder edge to him. Cliff was a great musician and person who was loved and lost, so the new guy got the resistance.
@Dan D No, Lars had potential. When Metallica first began, they questioned his ability to play. Fast forward a few years and Lars is doing great but then he got lazy. He doesn't practice, his performances got sloppier and sloppier. The whole Napster thing didn't help either.
@Dan D its just kids , its the internet, people like to follow trends. Times changes and eventually there will always be someone better than you at anything that you do in life. That was metallica realization. People forget lars comes from a different generation, different influences, look at ozzys first records, nobody give shit to that drummer. It was different back then, metallica was part of a generation of metal thats was staring to play faster. Also, lars was right about napster. Just by looking at the current times and damage of illegal downloading made to the industry, now everybody has tu suck Spotify dick to get paid decently , so he was right. big bands survived and will be fine but small local bands or metal bands that try to make a living out of metal will be nearly impossible.
This reminds me of the movie Fight Club, "Why did you do that!?" "I wanted to destroy something beautiful" Poor Jason Newsted like Cliff Burton's bass playing he will be missed
I really like this video, really shows how James has matured from the “alcoholic angry man” he was, too bad it’s so short and doesn’t have alot of attention
not sure on the timeline but it is possible the entire 'alcoholic angry man' which consumed years of his life was started in part or whole as a result of cliff's death. jason has said they were drinking day and night when he was brought on.
he saved your grieving asses and kept the machine rolling - that audition recording on TH-cam of his trying out after Cliff died is sick- good for him for quitting he was the most metal dude while you guys were all "Loaded "
Well said. I’ll never be “happy” with the band for running Jason off. They can go excuse it away and be at peace with the crap they caused, whatever. How convenient for them. I will never like how they did Jason. They’ve always given half hearted apologies followed with long winded justifications. Meh, you can keep that BS. Own your screw ups. No excuses.
I became a Metallica fan after Jason Newsted joined . I love every album Metallica cut . honestly to me Jason was Metallica. I feel like without him the band just isn't the same.
Jason being a fan is why people like him. Just for the same reasons people loved Dimebag, he was a brilliant guitarist and a fan as well. That made him relatable.
I will always love Cliff, there is no replacing him... but Jason will ALWAYS be my favorite bass player for Metallica. He just brought something to the band that no other bassist has. I mean, aside from Cliff of course. But... Jason lived, breathed, slept, and ate METAL... He put the METAL in METALLICA. Seriously, the dude was fucking awesome especially live. There is no denying that fact. He just brought something incredible to the band that is simply no longer there with him being out of the band... No disrespect to Rob... but Jason was just pure awesomeness.
For me.. Jason is my favorite Metallica bass player. Not the most talented I know, but he was so passionate. He worked his ass off and gave everything he had for the band. Live, he was just perfect. That guy made me want to play an instruments and play metal on stage. I chose to play guitar, but it was Jason Newsted who made me want to play music.
Jason newsted is the reason why the black album is so successful James Hetfield is still stabbing Jason newsted when he talks about him Jason newsted was the real reason a lot of people liked Metallica from 89 to 2000
True. Jason and Bob Rock, who pretty much walked in and put Lars in his place on the Black Album. Look what resulted from that. One of the best selling metal albums of all time and space.
The black album was great, because Bob Rock was the man who finally told Lars if he wanted to be great then he’d have to make it about the song instead of about his show off drumming. Some Metallica fans give the band crap for the black album because they felt like the band sold out. I simply think the band came into their own, and did something original for once, instead of trying to make master of puppets the third time over. The black album was a huge creative risk for them and it paid off. The other metal bands were never brave enough to take that risk and that is why they’re all watching from the backseat. Nothing wrong with sticking to making the same album over and over, just don’t complain when your fan base stays the same forever.
Die-hard 'tallica fan here... Jason is all heart. He made me want to play bass. He also had the best quote about the band ever... When they're getting killed for "selling out" with the Black album and afterward... "Damn right we sold out. Everywhere we played, every time we played!"
Lars killed Jason’s bass playing on the and justice for all album. He made sure that when editing, it was drowned out. Lars isn’t half the drummer that Jason is as a bass player. Tool.
To be fair, Lars is a crucial part of Metallica. He's like Matt Stone to Trey Parker. Hetfield has never functioned without him. He was there from the start and to diss Lars's playing and suggest that he has always been a mediocre drummer is just BS. It's the drummer of fucking Metallica dude. If Metallica's drummer sucked, they would have sucked. End of.
Have you heard the countless added bass remixes of the Justice album? It doesn't add much at all, if anything. A lack of bass is not the main problem with the sound of that album. It was 33 years ago. Get over it.
I'm not going to venture and say how the guys were feeling and how they should have acted, they acted exactly the way they were supposed to. Jason wasn't goofy, he was mature and had joy. And I'm so glad he left this empty shell of a once great band.
Jason was the best thing that happened to Metallica since Cliff's death. And they treated him without respect he deserved. And the details Jason reveiled about his conversation with James when James practically forced him to quit the band- as much as I love and respect James-I will always be on Jason's side.
If Metallica listened to early Flotsam and Jetsam, they would have had more respect for him. Doomsday for the Deceiver was exceptional. (And James would not have been able to play the songs properly, a technical issue of how he held his guitar back then). I was at the last show with jason and Flotsam, and I remembered thinking it’s a good opportunity, but they won’t allow him to write much, it will be a waste of talent. He was a main writing force with Flotsam and Jason and shouldn’t of had to earn their respect. They picked him. And, he was a fan, even wearing a ride the lightning shirt on his first Flotsam album. The respect should have been inherent.
I totally agree with what you are saying. He should’ve never had to earn respect. He was a good bass player before he even joined Metallica. One thing Metallica needs to do is go back and remix and justice for all and put the bass back in it so you can hear it and mix it properly.
I was about to say the same exact thing. Here James says "he would just follow what I did on th guitar" - Yea I'm sure he did fuckhead that's all you let him do, he got 3 (three) fucking three writing credits for his entire career in metallica
I remember reading an article on Jason when he got his Sadowsky basses. They had to waterproof the pickup cavities because after the shows, sweat would pour out of them and it would end up shorting out the electronics. He was a beast live.
His treatment was wrong, but it was human. Cliff's death was heartbreaking (especially to James) and Jason was always basically just the "replacement" to everyone else. Luckily, the more mellowed out Hetfield and Ulrich nowadays regret all that. It's unfortunate so many people hold it against them, when Jason himself is on good terms with Metallica nowadays. Hell he even blames himself a little for Justice's mixing.
No it isn't all right. They had power over someone and abused their power. Everyday people lose someone. That doesn't mean you get to be an asshole whenever you feel like it.
@@allsystemsgo8678 Power over someone? Jason was his own person my friend. He quit the band himself, nobody fired him. He did what he wanted and was allowed to do in the band, he didn't like that much so he left. I never said it was right, but it's natural to be an asshole sometimes, especially when it's driven by intense emotions of grief. Humans just can't control themselves sometimes. I'm sure Jason has been a jerk too. Here is James 20 years later sounding regrets. Nobody said it was warranted but you don't hold grudges against people 20 years later for old squabbles. Jason has moved on and so should you.
@Lavern And how do you know it had nothing to do with it? I'm not denying he was mean to him or wrong. I'm saying it's good that in retrorespect he realizes he had an emotional bias and can appreciate his contribution to the band. Jason is long over it too, so what's up with all the Jason fanboys constantly crying over a 20 year old altercation? People grow up and move on.
Yet he has. Again, the only people still whining 20 years later over Jason and James' drama are Jason's fanboys. I'm questioning if you even watched the video above you. Jason didn't work for James, and James didn't work for Jason. The agreement in Metallica was you weren't supposed to be credited for any side projects and Jason didn't agree so he left. Years later both parties, while not together are still on good terms with each other. We as fans should be admiring that and refrain from being stuck in 2003.
@Lavern James collaborated with a couple other artists beforehand but his name was no where near those records, going uncredited. The other members never really collabed on their own either. Say what you will but an agreement is an agreement. I think you need to remember that the entire band were sick of each other during the time Jason left and his exit just made it worse, it's not like he was the only one getting shit. But as both Lars and Jason put it, his departure was a necessary sacrifice for them to mature and kill their demons.
@Cristiano dos Santos Gomes Too bad because they played with Jason at least once. It's likely that they're better with Jason than they used to be. Enio Lotero posted in a link in this thread so you can see it happen.
I think james saw cliff as the only bass player he could respect, and treat as a band member, And he thought of jason as a fan they just invited onstage to play and see rob as just somebody to fill the spot until they retire
I mean, Jason following rhytm is what bass does in this music...Jason knew his place and paid respect...this is no funk so bass plays 80%of the song....I know I will be crucified after this but when you exclude songs where Cliff plays solo, then he is regular bass player...but on every album he got a sonh to play whatever he wants, he used effects that were unimaginable in that time, did solos live... For me, Jason was perfect fit
I think what he means is that when you play bass you aren't supposed to play it like a guitar. When I first started, I played bass and I did that and years later I realized I was not bass player material and switched to guitar as far as instruments. This is because I would copy the guitar exactly and that's not the purpose of bass. You have to just play root notes and groove along with the drums. Think Steve Harris or Ian Hill where they compliment the guitar but don't try to play the melody. If you want to play the actually melody (as I discovered I did), you have to switch to guitar. Bass is like, you have to sort of step aside and let the guitar player do his flashy thing and acknowledge that you are happy being in the background and not being heard. That is, we know the bass is there and we definitely know when it is not there but you can't really hear it in rock because the guitar drowns it out. It's a thankless job! lol
It's all about discretion. Sometimes it is better to double up on the guitar parts but other times it's better to come up with your own parts that lock in with the rhythm section but doesn't copy anything note for note.
James said basically the same thing about Ron McGovney, that he never contributed and only followed what James was doing. Although to me it seems like Jason did contribute at least a little to the songwriting process. And they knew from day one he used a pick, so why hire the guy if that was such a sticking point?
@@AMetalheadsJourney Groove with the drums huh? Go listen to battery and master of puppets with only bass. Cliff is following James, not Lars. This is true of most of Metallica's songs back then and why it was super thick. I can't recall any bass line where Cliff followed Lars but I haven't listened to every single bass line isolated either. Perhaps there are some but I doubt a huge chunk. Bass always being with the drummer is boring.
@@andrewirick5620 this. Metallica's sound in the 80s was all bass following the guitar save for some instrumentals and very few parts. There was a little more dissociation in the 90s and Jason does an excellent job in Load for example.
in short terms: we were assholes and he was our target. And tbh we still are and not able to give him any credit beside " he fit in during the live shows". The message is: good musicians dont have to be nice people neccessarily.
@@JaVinci77 James now is not the same James from the early 90s, why does he have to be a dick forever because of how he used to Be, it’s not like Jason didn’t understand where they were coming from after cliff died
I like the part where James says "Do whatever you want to do" because he never meanted. Jason had a lot of ideas and music in him, but they never wanted that music out. That was what drove Jason out of the band not the abuse but the fact that they did not let him "Do whatever he wanted to do". I would have loved to hear "My Friend of Misery" as an instrumental.
James may have been thinking that, but unfortunately, he didn’t use his words and covered it up with a lot of passive aggressive behavior, which is a hallmark of a drunk, instead of just talking out loud like a man. Jason is a professional bass player and knows what he’s doing, I’m sure if James would’ve simply used his words like an adult Jason would have adjusted. He didn’t. I did not like that part at all. What bothered me the most is James talking about Jason like he was his silly little child that needed his correction when jason is a grown man his same damn age who had been playing professionally just as long as he had. That was ridiculous. Talk about self delusion.

Just a shame that rehab or Phil Towles sessions with the band couldn't have bought the three of them and Jason back together 😞
He left the fooking band
On a more positive note...Jason was very welcomed by Cliff's parents. He was very proud of their acceptance of him .
We're all over thinking this. They were immature, rich, famous and on drugs and alcohol 24/7.

@@rdwrdw3672 yeaaahh, exactly, he just doesn't fit with metallica and never will, he's just great bass player, but thats all
It's how I feel. He is a seasoned musician up to par with MetallicA, but I always thought he is just that; a session bass player. Not MetallicA's bass player. Oddly enough, he has been with the band almost as long as Jason was... Yet it still feels like he just came as a replacement a few months ago.

Jason was the best second voice of Metallica he had a great energy.
Jason used to sing Whiplash like James never could. I'm glad I could hear him live.

Those hands of his are huge tho
@@AMetalheadsJourney lars really is a dickhead...
@Shockheadd45 difference is what Jason created live - he never seemed like a hired, on many nights he was the biggest force. Massive difference.
When Rob was 1st starting out, his goal was *not* to become a "rockstar" but wanted to be an on-call on-demand session guy.
Jason Newsted gave him extreme strength in his live performances. Great bass player
I love Jason Newstead! Metallica will never be the same without him!!!!
I think Cliff would have got out the band too big talent to listen to any of lars and jamie bs.
Their live shows went up a notch with Jason.👍
During tour they weren’t given time to grieve for cliff. That is what i heard
Goddamn I miss Jason, especially on Creeping Death. He was that extra oomph for Metallica. I love Rob don't get me wrong, but Jason just had "it".
I remember looking around at the audience during Creeping Death and all 25,000 of us were chanting DIE! DIE! DIE! And it was a surreal moment. Quite awesome.
I also prefer Jason
None of the other guys really sound comfortable on the mic. Jason wasn't afraid to add little flavor moments to songs; creeping death being a notable example.
Just the "MOTHER FUCKER DIE!" somehow added more weight to it. XD
Rob was great in ST and when he played for Ozzy. He's more of a stand in for Metallica. Jason had raw energy that they haven't had since he left.
@@JohnMegaton2062wow...a metallica fan with a brain and not just making bs up. What a surprise.
I think he added humility to the band, something that was missing at the time
Well said. Rob is a more reserved guy while Jason has the panache and drive it takes to be a band leader so that's why he has his own band. I don't think that, if ever Rob was to be fired or quit Metallica, he'd be the kind of guy to have his own band
@@golfgrabu Yeah, i agree
LOL!...thanks heaven he leaves the band!....Burton and Trujillo FOR EVER!....
It’s all ‘Jason was great, the rest of the band are douchebags’
They definitely are hearing it and have been for years. And nothing they say can undo it. Some Kind of Monster killed a part of them.
The comment was in the live context, not creative control over songs / album versions / writing.
Jay Rott
Newsted gave the songs what he felt they needed, not what he felt like playing. I don’t think Hetfield realised nor appreciated the difference.
@Elitesoulfly1 Soul mustaine was an asshole when he got kicked out he even admits he was violent back then
First, I tend to believe that there is much more to this situation than what is being told.
I was wrong.’
Which, despite all the positive change from James-change I love and admire...the man is an incredible human being...I don’t think he’s capable of yet. Which is sad, as he’s made so much progress and is someone I look up to.
They drove Jason away, period. They explain it away and justify it-but they never, ever ACTUALLY say they are sorry. That’s what Jason needs to hear. It’s also the right thing to do.
You have no idea what they've said to him privately.
I'm pretty sure they have apoligized in private
I am disgusted by people like you who think everything has to be done in the public eye
To me James is apologetic in his current speech and memory about Jason, but doesn't actually say the words completely.
Yeh I think if he'd had more creative freedom he wouldn't have wanted to leave to pursue other avenues.
Thank you! James was trash for saying that.
They never allowed him to do that because they knew he would be WAY better than Cliff. They didn't want anyone to take the throne.
He brought fuck all composition wise
@@archivedshite
Neither does Rob...
I agree, but jason couldnt perfect the crab crawl,lol...and dont get me started on that, lol
Exactly. Also, stop comparing him negatively to Cliff! Stop saying that Cliff's shoes were unfillable.
Never understood the "he was a fan, we didnt like that, so we decided to smack it outta him"
You would think that being a fan would mean he would give 200% to the band and Jason did. Guess some people are hard to please.
Pretty simple...they did'nt want him to fawn all over the band and act like a roadie...they wanted him do to his own thing within the band
I think Metallica has forgotten where they came from in a sense. They are legit rock stars and act accordingly. Have for decades now.
I lost so much respect for how they treated Jason. The day that Jason left the band, they lost their heart
@@AMetalheadsJourney Wasnt Dave the one that bullied Ron? I heard that he did hit him a few times, and threw beer at his bass.
@@slenderbc0751 Yes exactly. I have even heard Dave talk about it himself.
Most band members have their times of not getting along with each other, and this isn't the biggest example. Remember the drama with Van Halen or Oasis?
Jason had the impossible mission and actually pulled it off and really became what everyone in the comments describes. He was amazing in Metallica and a joy to watch! His passion was OUR passion.
maybe James and Lars can just come out and say "we were dicks for being too controlling and not letting Jason actually stand out"
Apologize and let it be done.
we all know what happened and Jason just deserves the Apology.
if they weren't ready for someone new, why continue so soon after Cliff.
@@allhandsondik7803
@AllHandsOnDik
that may be true, the Differences in the Pressures felt.
James: "You can hear the bass live" looking at Lars...Lars: "What"?

The notion that Jason wasn't 'hard enough' for Lars is pathetic garbage.
it is, they were never really tough guys compared to the rest of the metal scene, not even compared to the big 4
Yup, Lars should feel lucky enough to just be in the band. They could've easily ditched him and played with a real drummer.
I will always be Jason's biggest fan. He took on an impossible role and made it look easy.

I really like this video, really shows how James has matured from the “alcoholic angry man” he was, too bad it’s so short and doesn’t have alot of attention
That's all he had to say about Jason but he did say a lot.
not sure on the timeline but it is possible the entire 'alcoholic angry man' which consumed years of his life was started in part or whole as a result of cliff's death. jason has said they were drinking day and night when he was brought on.
He is still like being proud of what they did to Jason. Pretty sad.
Lol give me a break. He hasn’t matured. He isn’t apologizing like he should (like a good, TRUE man would do). CANT STAND Hetfield.
Hetfield hasn't matured a bit. He doesn't recognize or even sounds apologetic about how they treat Jason like shit.

I love Jason! But as for the Black Album I think most comes from Bob Rock. He had a strong grip on all of them.
@@JohnMegaton2062 haaaaa no but good try .... lars urich has always been a off beat drummer and when he started playing electric drum kit he got worse

Jason is about Metal! Its a miracle he stayed as long as he did!
Lars killed Jason’s bass playing on the and justice for all album. He made sure that when editing, it was drowned out. Lars isn’t half the drummer that Jason is as a bass player. Tool.
Lars is nothing but an overrated crybaby. And a bully.
Lars is a complete scumbag. I lost all interest in Metallica because of him.
I don't like his condescending European accent. That's all.
Jason was the best bassist Metallica has ever had. I’m not alone here.

"Other arrangements can be made." Yes, by Jason. Talented people leave when you treat them like shit, guys.
Yep. Don’t threaten talented people. They may call your bluff. It’s your loss if they do.
Shockwatch if they did that and marketed it, they’d sell a million copies easily..people would genuinely be curious.
correct in every thing you say
Doomsday is awesome album, there you can clearly hear Jason's briliant bass lines... Very very good album...
I played in metal beast with Jason in the early 80s in Phx ,he definitely had what it takes to go the distance in metal💥🔥👍
I got into them because of the energy Jason had one stage. Just head banging constant and going nuts. Was awesome.

And he thought of jason as a fan they just invited onstage to play and see rob as just somebody to fill the spot until they retire
In another video James goes into how he looked at Cliff as family. Which clears up a lot of why.
Imagine if Jason and Marty Friedman made a band.
@Shaquile O'atmeal Imagine all the people living life in peace... You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.
Jason rules!!!
@@AMetalheadsJourney
Groove with the drums huh?
Go listen to battery and master of puppets with only bass. Cliff is following James, not Lars. This is true of most of Metallica's songs back then and why it was super thick.
I can't recall any bass line where Cliff followed Lars but I haven't listened to every single bass line isolated either. Perhaps there are some but I doubt a huge chunk.
Bass always being with the drummer is boring.
@@andrewirick5620 this. Metallica's sound in the 80s was all bass following the guitar save for some instrumentals and very few parts. There was a little more dissociation in the 90s and Jason does an excellent job in Load for example.
yes, I saw Jason and Metallica back in 1987.. That was a blast, his live performance was exellent
Everytime he says "we", put an "I" there......
No
Lars also was part
in short terms: we were assholes and he was our target. And tbh we still are and not able to give him any credit beside " he fit in during the live shows".
The message is: good musicians dont have to be nice people neccessarily.
Selective hearing is funny. He said a lot more about Jason than that. What do you want him to do beg Jason on bended knee to come back?
@@romaretaylor9953 it was a pretty good summary tho
Jason was awesome on stage !
James and Jason are huge on stage... That's what bugged James.
lol mhmm
Yeah, I think the same... the thing is James has a huge ego and Jason doesn't, which I think angered James even more.
@@JaVinci77 James now is not the same James from the early 90s, why does he have to be a dick forever because of how he used to
Be, it’s not like Jason didn’t understand where they were coming from after cliff died
@@JohnMegaton2062 Your comment is spot on. James is deeply passive-aggressive.
