  • Cute and cuddly fur balls, bouncing about on cliff-faces, the famous rock hyrax certainly doesn't look like it came from mighty origins. As difficult as it is to imagine, these little creatures that comfortably hop around in the gardens of many of South African residents, are actually the closest relative of Africa’s largest mammal! We head to KwaZulu Natal to find out more about these fascinating urban critters.

These dudes sit on my boyfriend's fence all the time when he comes home from work. They always have such mischievous looks on their faces lol. So cute

Dassies have a permanent "what the bloody hell is going on" look on their faces.

Interestingly in the native Shona and Ndebele languages of Zimbabwe rock hyrax are called mbira/imbila respectively. And that most famous of snakes the black mamba is known as rovambira/ginyambila in native Zimbabwe languages.for it was known that hyrax made up the black mambas favourite food source
    Rovambira/ginyambila means striker of dassies

I'm glad to see them adapting to urban life. It means they'll always be around, like pigeons and raccoons.

What a bunch of cuties! It's sad to see their environment being wrecked but I really admire these people being so cool with them! :')

Good Day, I've got 3 creatures in my garden, coming in in the evenings to graze on the roots of my lawn it seems. Seems they don't eat the grass as such. They look VERY much like Dassies and also move just as fast when frightened. What I don't understand is that they have tails, 10-12cm long and quite thin. One is approximately 40cm long and the other two about 25-30cm, big bulky bodies but like Dassies small heads in comparison to their bodies.
I tried on numerous occasions to take photo's but as soon as they hear any movement, they're gone. I reside in Centurion and there is an open veld at the bottom of my garden but no rocks at all.
Any clues what these creatures could be?

"Better known as a dassie." Well, I guess that depends on where you live. I'd never heard the term before today. ;)

Evolution ironically relies on abiogenesis which has lightning as the creative force. I say ironic because lightning is representative of Satan! Evolution swaps The Creator for the Devil! LOL!

88 is a white supremacist numerical code for "Heil Hitler." The number 88 is therefore representative of Nazism. Numbers are evil. Non sequiturs are awesome.
