Their common ancestor with elephants was significantly bigger than the modern hyrax, which is thought to have shrunk to fill in a niche after newly evolved bovines took their primary grazer role from them. hyracoids from which both the hyrax and elephants descend from actually look closer to modern hyrax than elephants, suggesting that the major differences between them came about because elephants are very highly derived, something that can be tracked in the elephant fossil record :)
