Thank you for mentioning Hitchens.......Teresa was not as a great as everyone made her out to be. Hitchens may have liked to argue yes, but he never claimed to be a saint. His job was to expose mistreatment and corruption of people from all institutions, religion or otherwise.
Yeah I rolled my eyes when the video said "take his words with a huge grain of salt" because he wasn't a social worker. So what? What has that got to do with the truth of his words?
@@CrimsonMagick it makes sense to me. It means that Hitchens did not have the well-being of the poor in mind in his arguments, but rather in tearing a person down, namely MT or in some cases an entire religion. Knowing someone’s objective when presenting arguments makes one wary of what biases one may have. For example, he could be downplaying some facts and emphasizing others in order to suit his narrative. That’s why it would make sense to “take his word with a grain of salt”
@@numbers93 just because Hitchens was not a social worker does not mean that he did not care about the sick and the poor, nor that his argument was flawed. It simply does not follow.
I don't know where you got the idea that Hitchens ever took anything out of context, given that in his writings he went all the way to provide the context to every idea he was objecting too. His intellectual honesty was striking not only in writing but in speech as well as he correctly applied Occam's Razor, Hitchen's Razor, Sagan's razor and demonstrated a solid grasp of David Hume and George Orwell. He went after faith and religious fanatics because he identified in their mentality the very basis for fascism and totalitarianism. Theocracy, after all is the original and the ultimate totalitarian regime.
The famine of 1943- Thank you Winston Churchill. Diverted food and rations for the war effort thereby creating a famine starving millions of people to death. He famously remarked " if there was a famine in India, how is Gandhi still alive. " So much that he was single handedly responsible for more deaths by famine than the people killed in the holocaust.
@Impersonal Immigrant it very well could’ve been , the Bengal famine was all sorts of bad disasters coming into one The monsoon had swept away most of the grain there, then the Japanese taking control of burma which stored a lot of rice and wheat and Churchill’s ignorance to the ordeal paved the way for a brutal disaster
"She got sick a lot" "In a hospital bed" ...So she's a hypocrit (I know it's spelled wrong)? She denied people the treatment she got. Remind me: How is this woman a saint??
Yes, she was evil and I think people were just brainwashed into thinking she was a saint. I thought she was for a long time too until I recently learned the truth. Gosh was she a despicable person!
As a Loretoite and a bengali her name is pretty household and our school was literally elated to hear that she was granted sainthood. Even though i have been schooled in a missionary all-girls school since i was 3 , i turned out to be an atheist. Certainly no one imposed christinaty on us directly, our catholic classmates were treated differently, better. It made a huge difference in the fees we paid too. Most school fests were out of reach for us since we were "not catholic" but at the same time in a secular country such as ours (India) this seems absurd. I changed schools for my last two years of schooling coz our school had till 10th. Even though i have been to my new school just once due to the pandemic I saw the huge difference not only coz it was co-ed but the "discipline" stuff we were taught in Loreto was absolutely bs.We had a soft spot for her but meh sainthood? BS (but in caps)
You're missing the point about Hitchens. He may not have visited the sick and poor (in fact he did, as a journalist, going to some of the most dangerous warzones at that time) regularly. He doesn't have to as he's not the one everyone is saying is a Saint.
I have no stake in this story, she was a flawed human being who did what she thought was right by trying to help people that no one else cared for. With her, people who were considered untouchable by their society were cared for. Hitchens on the other hand has never built anyone up, but dedicated his life to trying to destroy people's beliefs. Something that he couldn't know he was right about, in the same way she couldn't know if she was right. The difference, her belief moved her to try and help those who were hurting, and he tried to pass on the emptiness that his arrogance couldn't completely hide, and alcohol couldn't completely numb. He isn't someone to put on a pedestal, and neither is she. But this is like comparing someone who helps other people to the Kardashians. If she just helped one person she's better than him.

I have watched the entire video keeping my biasness aside that was ingrained in my brain from childhood education where Mother Teresa is glorified figure in India. I am also a Bengali so just like any other Bengali household, glory songs and talk of miracles performed by the nun has been narrated to me. This video is eye opening. I never read much into the celebrated figure other than a respect that I had in my heart from hearing about her "contribution" to the Indian society. But yeah, this felt nice.
I think it's better to treat mother Teresa like a person instead of an all-good angel. While she did help the people of India it was also clear that she cared more about increasing the Catholic Church's reputation and funding. Not to mention she had controversial practices like refusing to give treatment to near-death patients since she thought suffering brings you closer to God. I also find it hypocritical that she had high quality care at a good hospital in her deathbed. She isn't an evil person but she's not an angel from heaven either. I'm glad she doesn't use fund money to sell drugs of buy luxury but she also didn't use the money to better the state of her orphanages and hospitals. In other words, she's just another human being like you and me with positives and negatives.
As per the interview, she is clear that she is not a social worker but only a missionary. Some sources say that she donated the money she collected in the name of the poor to the Rome Catholic church. That is why the church valued her more.

I laughed because had Hitchens still been here he would have just laughed. Long live the seeker of argument 🙏🏻♥️
@@CrimsonMagick yeah that felt very biased tbh.

You're missing the point about Hitchens. He may not have visited the sick and poor (in fact he did, as a journalist, going to some of the most dangerous warzones at that time) regularly. He doesn't have to as he's not the one everyone is saying is a Saint.
Exactly!
@@vonbass1300 She firmly believed that suffering brought people closer to god. Because of that she neglected her patients, denying them appropriate medication to ensure they suffered. She tortured people by denying them adequate care. She was a monster.

The conclusion is, wanna be cured from deseases, see a specialist, take the madicines and tips, and also pray to individual's beleived religion.
I did my schooling from a convent school and I strongly believed in her good deeds. Although I m from a different religious faith I believe in the good work she has done for the poor and m not ready to ruin my childhood.
If truth about an important figure "ruins" your childhood then maybe your childhood is built on false narratives.
You can't live in illusions for too long. Human brain is always about updating info, not like a religious book where people think it is word of god and can't be changed even if we find many faults.
Same I also thought same about her in my childhood but after learning about her bad side for the first time I didn't believed that but now its like my 3rd or 4th time hearing bad about her from big trustworthy channels so now I believe the truth only.
The Christian scientist lady telling people to pray for the injured to help heal them gets open heart surgery and a pacemaker 🤣🤣
she also took things like tylenol while refusing it to those she was “saving” 🙃
She wasn’t a Christian scientist. Learn.
And? She’s dead. So it’s best to not make fun of someone especially of the dead.
@@lautaroaguilar9584 Yeah, she was catholic. But this is still behavior closely linked to the christian scientist movement. So, she was kind of practicing both schools of awfulness.
umm you do know that scientists and doctors can have religion too right?
Well even if the hospice didn't have enough trained people at least they tried (mom died last October and was on hospice for 3 days before dieing so Im aware how hospice is)
hospice care is palliative care. there is no trying to save someone there, only to try and take away the pain before they die. My grandmother was in a hospice for a few months and she was so ready to go before she finally passed. Your mother was rather fortunate to not have to be kept sedated from the pain of death. 😀
I’m sorry for you mom man thoughts and prayers to you and your family
I’m sorry about your mother my dad died a few years ago he was only in hospice for about 6 hours before he went. I got to say goodbye and I’m grateful his pain was managed.
True it was probably better than dying in the gutter but this woman took in millions of dollars for her charity and most of it went to the church, not the sick. They lay on old WWII surplus cots or on the floor, family was not allowed to visit, and in the way of pain killers they’d be lucky to get Tylenol. They were told suffering would bring them closer to Jesus. It’d be a far cry from what we’d consider hospice.
That’s what people don’t understand really 😢
And sorry to hear about your mom.
I am Indian and she was hell's Angel.
Didnt she save many of u indians?
@@Oxford_10..no she converted in the name of healing...most Indians hate her
You can do all things through christ who strengthens you
"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled is to believe he doesn't exist"
That's what these wrong interprator of Jesus are doing , making us believe that devil isn't incide them
As far as I know she was not good at all.
Often leaving people to die in pain without medication and so on ....
because they never converted to christianity, that's how her love for all works.
@@happinessallover even if they did "Jesus would help them"
She is a nun not a doctor... During her times India's conditions were still very worse in term on economy there were few Indian doctors and no body is weling to treat the poor the homeless and the downtrodden atlest she gave a helping hand to them giving them free food and shelter and free medicine ..... She preach the good news of Jesus Christ wich is her mission but not force conversation as many people have thought... Seeing her good deed people praise her and want to be like her and accept Jesus Christ of their own willingness not force conversion.... But the sad things is that many people refuse to belive this and re ready to accept what is not true about her.
I was alive in the 90s it was amazing. I was 1 years old
