I feel so grateful that these videos of Croce's performances exist. He died a year before I was born and l remember his music on the radio in my mom's VW beetle when I was a little kid. Being able to see him perform all these years later is awesome. His live stuff is better than his studio recordings which is absolutely rare among any generation of musicians.

I was born in 74 also, and I love this man's music. If you can listen to Croce and say you don't like his music, you don't know what good music is. Just for clarification, I know how social media can be, that was just a statement not directed at you.

Jim died when I was 3, but his music was part of the soundtrack of my childhood. My parents always surrounded me with some of the greatest music ever made, Jim's among these. I thank him (and musical collaborator Maury) for the musical brilliance and timeless works that I enjoy to this very day. I can only hope that these two are looking down and smiling at the world... still listening over 50 years later!

@@rickstalentedtongue910 Exactly. I watch the 60s show Wagon Train all the time. The second wagon master, John McIntire was in his 50s, but looked 75, and one of his employees on the train, was named Terry Wilson (Bill Hawks). I always thought he was between 55-60 on the show, and was absolutely STUNNED to find out he was only 28 in the particular episode I was watching! I think the fact that a lot of people were heavy smokers back then, and the lack of knowledge about the importance of sunscreen, is why.

50 years ago tonight, Jim Croce, along with his longtime guitarist and studio partner Maury Muehleisen (shown with him here in the video) would play a ten song set at the Prather Coliseum at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
An hour after the concert, they and four others would board a small Beechcraft plane at the Natchitoches airport bound for Sherman, Texas. It would barely clear the runway before clipping a pecan tree and crashing, killing all on board. Jim was 30 years old. Maury was 24.
Days after the accident, Jim’s wife Ingrid would receive a letter in the mail from him, talking about feeling tired of the grind of the road, contemplating quitting the music business and wanting to head home to be with her and son A.J and be a family man. In it, he concluded,
_“Give a kiss to my little man and tell him Daddy loves him. Remember, it’s the first sixty years that count and I’ve got 30 to go.”_
We’ll obviously never know what might have been, but in a short time Jim created a musical legacy that is still cherished to this day.
Keeping resting peacefully Jim and Maury and take pride in knowing humanity is still loving your music a half century after you parted this world.

In 1984 I was watching an episode of Hunter ( don't ask why a 9 year old was watching this )
No episode has resided in my brain more than this particular one. The beginning showed a cowboy hat wearing, Cadillac driving, sunglass ( at night ) wearing, villain ,... who was clearly going to the target of Dee Dee McCall and Rick Hunter.
Years later .... and transitioning from 80s hair metal to rap .... I never knew the name of the song or who sang it.
Seasons went by and never was able to catch the rerun of this particular episode. One particular night in 1989 .... the episode aired ... and this 15 year olds brain was able to retain a few of the lyrics ... most importantly ... messing around with Jim. ( Still no clue of the artist, or the song title )
The next day, my parents had dropped me off at a Music Plus record store.... while they did some grocery shopping next door. I noticed in the corner of the store was a machine that seemed to have every bit of information, of every song, of every artist, with every lyric .. in the history of music. I waited for my turn to use the machine...
Walked up ... typed in "Jim" ... I can safely say, with out remembering specifically, "too many results" ... or something similar came up ... I started the search over
    "Mess with Jim"
The results came back .... and I can only assume Sinatra came up first in the results because of popularity ....
    Frank Sinatra.
    Jim Croce.
I was able to use the free scratch pad paper and pencil on the machine and wrote down the artist, the song, the album, and the genre.
"What kind of a 15 year old walks into the folk section of the cassette tapes. ?" I thought to myself... and then "God, I hope no one I know see's me"
I walked in, found the tape, made the purchase .. and waited for my parents to pick me up.
Since then .... every cassette, every CD, every vinyl produced ... and every song on streaming platforms .... every book written about him... and a very faded t-shirt I got as a Christmas gift.
It hasn't been easy as a kid to understand the life and times of an adult during the 60s and 70s ... and the adjustment wasnt always easy ( going from gangster rap to folk ) but as Ive grown older ... experienced life a bit.... love, hate, sadness, happiness, relationships ... it's become easier to understand ( those times ) through Jim's music.
I am old enough now to know what a tragic loss it was to lose him. What a gentle soul he was .... what his music was about .... what kind of place this world would be if there was more musicians like him. A lifetime of amazing music .... I keep his stuff all to myself ... I listen with the windows open when I drive... listen when nobody's home... crank it as loud as possible on my headphones.
Thank you for allowing me to tell the story of how I came to find Jim Croce, pronounce his name correctly, and share my love for him.
I was able to find the episode of Hunter... and it instantly brought me back to a 9 year old, sitting on the couch, with a giant remote control, popcorn and diet coke... anticipating that THIS will be the night they rerun THE Hunter episode.

My parents, John and Deenie Shannon, took me to see Shiloh Morning in Fairfax Virginia when I was about 5. Shiloh Morning also came to our house, well at least Ginnie, Ken and maybe others did? I mean, hey... I was 5. I actually remembered the band's name and Ginnie's name.

Remembering Jim Croce born on January 10, 1943. He was an American folk and rock singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, he released five studio albums and numerous singles. Croce's breakthrough came in 1972, his third album, You Don't Mess Around with Jim, produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached No. 1 after Croce died. The follow-up album, Life and Times, included the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which was the only No. 1 hit he had during his lifetime. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Croce
