I quit my flight attendant job because of all the uncertainty, and the very low pay! I started a flight attendant TH-cam channel too. But was always too fatigue to even upload anything. I'm now living a more peaceful life. Peace and blessings to you.
Hi, I left a post last week off my phone which was not working properly. I am on my computer now and I would like to clearly state what I posted. I am not sure if my information is help full here. I would just like to give people that are Flight Attendants or want to be a Flight attendant a clear understanding of the reality of the lifestyle (job) I don't wish to discourage any one however I feel people need to hear the truth. I have been doing this since 1987 started at 19 I am now 55. . In my day training was abusive and we did not use computers. I was on the phone crying to my parents who I recently lost. First off reserve is a PAIN... especially when you're coming off a 3-day trip or 6 flights and your pager (phone has to be on for scheduling or duty manager to call) until a certain time. Airport reserve is impossible as many know. And back then we did not have testing. We all relied in house phones or pay phones, and we had a public airphone located next to 2-R on every aircraft. Why 2-R? I don't know. This is a lifestyle. In the beginning you're going to hate it. Long hours jet fatigue, not seeing family and having people think that you stood them up on dates. You can't always communicate. If you're stuck on the plane let's, say for 4 hours (yes it happens) and you're in Dallas but your dinner date is waiting at the restaurant in San Francisco- then you will have much explaining. Unfortunate people might let that slide e once Maybee twice, but eventually get frustrated and feel you are playing games and not want anything to do with you. So will family. It got so bad that it caused me years of estrangement. What it comes down to is what do you really love in life. For myself being a Flight Attendant is my life. It's not glamorous or what people thing. Just cleaning human waste and lavatory's seats, can be so gross you will feel like a over glorified low-end janitor when you worked so hard to get those wings. Your life will mostly be at your base and in hotels around the world. My advice is to learn and seek exciting things in the location you are based at. You will be forced to actually make friends in that location and on your trips. Back in the day when I was a young hot looking boy with a nice body lol. sorry im just being honest. I was center of attention. I went to clubs worth the crew and stayed up all night to make my flight in 2 hours. Dinner in Montreal and lunch dinner in Seattle next day. I lived a party lifestyle and I mean it was a party with punish meant simultaneously! I was almost dismissed from training and terminated. However, I was given a final warning. They know I was immature because of my age but was a good flight attendant. My manager even said to someone else I over hared that I will outgrow it. So as you age you won't have many opportunities as you once did to go on dates and keep I.T with family as they in my case broke up. Get used to spending much time alone weather your young or older, especially older. Yes, it gets depressing at my age to spend holidays Christmas or thanksgiving eating Dennys alone in my hotel room. I remained single most of my life and am committed to being single. I had a 5-year relationship with my partner, and he could no longer put up with me being away so long and being so exhausted I could not get on a plane imidatly on my first day off and take him to Hawaii or Paris... Aside that... management is abusive and wants you to stay on duty regardless of if someone passes away... I recall one time we had a trip to chili and a man was going crazy on board... as we had a mechanical problem . We stopped in RIO, and we thought they would terminate the flight because of all that drama; however, we were forced to remain on duty. Disciplinary action was taken against a Flight Attendant that refused could not continue that trip. So many things can happen. Good news is if you make it past 5 years (hang in there!) the job will get easier, and bidding will get easier along with holding that dream line! The more seniority the better. More money line holding less work it becomes a vacation! you need to pay your dues. Good luck to everyone and dont gives up try not to quit we all go through it.
Your comment is the most spot-on of all comments. I've been doing this for some time now and the first few years were really tough. However, if you invest in time and patience, the dividends later on are amazing. I've embraced this job with all its pros and cons and can't think of anything else I'd like to do. If only I could give your comment a thousand thumbs-up!
@@flyby9741 i appreciate that. so yeah I feel the same way this is all I want to do this is a lifestyle that what i dreamed of since i was a kid. Started with TWA back in 1986 91 I went over to American I'm still here at American. now at 56 no regrets whatsoever I embrace it as they did from day one. at this point I'm going to keep doing it. I'm single I'm happy being single and I live for this job. My passengers are my family, airplanes and airports are my home , and I don't know where I'd be without this. In the beginning oh yes I was a kid I was young very good looking still on now but you know how it goes back then it was party party and training I learned from my mistakes I almost was dismissed for excessive partying LOL and I try to get younger people in training not make the mistakes I did because I see people get dismissed quite a bit and I want everyone to succeed. training was brutal! my parents were supporting me. . I'm now 56 now things have changed, and I mean that in a positive way. I'm glad you really enjoy your career and I truly embrace it myself again sorry for my typos having a hard time capitalizing my letters I need to fix my phone LOL. I'm talking into my phone I'm actually on my jump seat right now LOL
@Brett Patetto Trust me, no one was worried about your sentence structure. We were smiling through your words. You write a very nice chapter. Loved hearing your experiences.
I’m a captain at a regional. I enjoyed hearing your stories. I give you all a lot of credit for what you have to juggle in the course of your day. We have separate set of problems and us pilots have the luxury of being closed off from the passengers, but good flight attendants are worth their weight in gold. I appreciate y’all
I took some pilot lessons and deeply wanted to return to the air as a first officer. But it's insanely expensive, and I'm not super young lol. Maybe one day. Thanks for hearing the FAs out and supporting!
Tara, you are so well spoken and even though we don't know each other that well in our brief passings and journey in training- I can tell you've experienced so much growth since we met in 2018. I hope your new chapter gives you great satisfaction and brings more time for meaningful time for yourself and for your beautiful growing family. I'm grateful to have crossed paths with you! Your experience and your story will help so many others who think being a flight attendant is all glam and glitz. You been a real one since day one. Much love, best wishes and good luck in every new adventure your life brings you ❤️
Thank you Kimmy! I am grateful you came over and took the time to watch! I loved being an FA, but realities of life make the job pretty tough and you’re one of the hardest working people I know. I appreciate all that you do and wish you all the luck and love in your life!
I was a flight att for 42 years-left during covid-did not want to-but in retrospect it was the only time ever that our airline offered buyout of any substance. You must realize that you are just a number to management--keep y nose clean and realize that its like the military-you belong to them! Todays job since covid is much harder-you develop a tough skin-you have to! But you do develop, character, patience, good habits to last a lifetime-like being on time-YOU WILL BE ON TIME! And some nice people y meet along the way! You will love it and y sometimes will hate it but it will make a different person! And eventually--hang in there-you Will see Paris and many other places!!❤😮
It’s been 8 years for me and I’m about to throw the towel in. Grateful for the opportunities but this phase in my life is over. So much resistance and my health is literally deteriorating. Im exhausted ALL the time. This is not in alignment with my current life ma path. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you gave a realistic summary of how the airline industry works. Many fail to understand this is a seniority based industry. In the beginning, you dont have the life you will have later down the road. If you have family issues that require time and attention, this job can be a huge challenge.
I definitely feel like I was disillusioned when I first came on. Many people said how flexible the schedule is and that really isn’t true- especially if you don’t have time to live in swap boards because you’re raising a family in your off time! As I said in other comments I don’t regret my time with D at all, I’m very thankful. But it is a lifestyle I simply couldn’t keep up with anymore. More power to you if you can!
I'm a FA for an international Scandinavian company - in my 5 years I've never been called the B word or had passengers that disrespect me badly. Advice for future FA - choose your company wisely - some companies really do respect your private life, makes a great scheduling and allows you plenty time to rest plus gives you fantastic layovers. I'm very sorry for your experience and I thank for your honesty - hope you're doing better now! It was an interesting video!
I agree with you completely! I wish my company had made more of an effort to have my back in that situation, but there’s definitely a “customer first” culture there. I’m glad to hear your FA career is going smoothly. Best to you!!
I lived in Norway for years, and regardless of what occupation one has, they are treated unbelievably well. Not so in the U.S. by a longshot. Only those of us who've lived abroad know this, and it's one of many things that makes the U.S. not the greatest country in the world...which is what they think they are.
@@donnabaardsen5372we’ve been saying it for so long, it reminds me of the fable “the hare and the tortoise”. Yeah, the hare was ahead for a while, but then he got complacent and went to sleep. In that time, the tortoise made his moves, he never slept. The US is basically the hare. We’ve fallen behind because we fell asleep as a culture. People live only for today. Once upon a time, we had leaders that loved this country and had a vision for this country. Those visionaries are long gone.
FA now hitting 34 years. every one needs to pay there dues on this job. The main reason I have lasted is because I have always remained single and my dad always thought me to survive as he was a survivor of the Holocaust in Europe, I wish people would think about this before they apply. It took me 1 year before I could see my parents.
Yes, this is the way the job is. I knew lots of FAs before applying and all anyone ever told me was how flexible the job is. That is a lie, particularly in the beginning. Not being able to see your parents for a year because of your job is wrong. I was single when I started, but my life changed unexpectedly. I love Delta, and I loved my years I put into flying. But I'm still glad I left.
I agree with your reasoning regarding why we need to appreciate FA! I love them! They are the reason we are safe in the air period. I cannot believe people are so disrespectful.
1. I love working weekends & having weekdays off 2. I tried working 9 to 5 once. It felt like a waste of my life. Same shit, different day. 3. I live 30 min away from one of the busiest airports in the US 4. I’m single, own my house, have money in the bank & I have a flexible side job that I can work in a hotel room whenever a client hires me 5. I got hired a CJO in the spring but turned it down due to a quicker turnaround than I was expecting so I’m reapplying next month now that timing works out
It’s not everyone. I absolutely agree with your reasons. However, I like the job as an FA. I came from a 9-5, and can’t go back to a 9-5. Your reasons are so true though.
I'm with you girl I'm tired of it too. Same deal for me taking a mental break bc its just too much and I'm exhausted. I don't think they understand how tiring the job really is..... You can literally be up for over 17 hours! It's sad...
I hope you get the break you need. What gets me is the general public's misconceptions about what the job is and if you have the *nerve* to complain they're like "WHAT!? But it's so gLaMoRoUs". LOL
@@TaraOzekinI get told so many times that I’m just a waitress in the air. No, we aren’t. We are safety professionals. Waitressing was actually the last thing I learned about in my carrier. No, really.
I’ve always dreamed of being a flight attendant, i’ve been preparing myself for sooo many years and I finally applied to my dream company, everything is going well so far with my application but i’ve been watching so many videos about ex flight attendants and most of them are quite negative :( seems like most companies treat them like sh*t and I don’t even know how their bodies resist for so long 😭 I don’t know how to feel about it, my dream kinda crashed before I even got into it. I feel like i literally wasted so many years wanting something that seems to be so “bad” 😞
You know, give it a go. Try it out. It was my dream too, and I wouldn’t trade my time with them for anything! But my personal priorities changed, and that’s just my story. Also, SO many people thrive in this environment! You never know!!
@@TaraOzekin I totally understand, we all grow, change, evolve, we’re humans so no one should judge your decision :) it’s totally understandable, thank you so much for sharing your stories :)
Please don't give up applying. I will tell you it's tough in the beginning but be patient. Things do get better with time - schedule, pay, etc. You gotta try it to know how it really is. You don't want to spend your life asking "what if..." or do you?
@@heyloveistheweapon Don't be terrified. It's just hard work and a lot of studying. You will meet your lifelong friends in your training. If it's in Houston that means we will be future colleagues. But no matter what airline you work for, DON'T GIVE UP very easily. You will thank me later for that :)
I'm a former FA and identify with alot of what you talked about. I'm just curious, in the situation you mentioned about the guy wanting the beer on the short flight, if you would have sold him a beer, would you have gotten in trouble?
Hey flighty friend! No, I wouldn't have gotten in trouble. And I would even assume some FAs might be willing to do it, even though it would be against policy. HOWEVER, if another passenger noticed that I sold old Joe some beer, others might want to buy as well. Why does one passenger get a special exception and others do not? The purpose of the policy on those short flights (less than 450 miles) is that you want to be able to offer a beverage to every passenger in the cabin. It takes time to make a payment in the air, and the galley isn't stocked with enough for the entirety of the cabin, since they are very meticulous about catering the aircraft according to the mileage. If you are stuck with multiple passengers making payments, you will not have time to get through the entire cabin to offer everyone even just the basics! It was only a 45 min flight, to service 200 people. It also says on the website when you purchase your ticket which types of services you'll be offered in the air. So those in the main cabin, who paid less for their seats don't get the option to purchase an alcoholic beverage on short distance flights. Of course on longer flights, main cabin is able to purchase alcohol! It's all based on mileage. I know that was long winded! Hope that helps!
I totally agree with her and how these customers act but just for reference I work for a low-cost carrier for a while and then I was offered a position with American unfortunately being the largest airline in the world or in the United States that is their Union contract is only paying $12.08 an hour in one of the most expensive places in the country. Needless to say I went to another carrier at a airport closer to where I live 20 minutes vs 1 hour for the other airport for far more money and I do have to say no matter which airline you work for you are going to get customers like this and sometimes you have to smile and wave but there are times and protocols / FAA in. That must be followed. When I worked for my other airline I did pull people off planes for calling my agents nasty words I did give them an opportunity and they proceeded to curse at me and I basically told him hey you have two options get off this plane or go to jail. And they acted like they were the victim so I totally get where she's coming from and I don't see why people act like this in public it is totally unnecessary there worse than children
No, no. Children usually have more common sense than adults on my plane. They follow the rules, they’re friendly, and they don’t bother (most of the time, believe it or not). I’ll fly kids any day of the week. I also work for a low cost carrier btw.
I have been a Fa for 10 years. Those are the daily struggles of dealing with people! You learn how to deal. I love my job. But it’s not for everybody…. It is hard.
I genuinely think some people are tougher skinned than others. Hearing people call me the B word constantly really ate away at me. So many people told me you just leave it at work. I wish I was like that, but when I went home, I was still upset about these interactions. Paired with my health, and my son's issues, I just knew it wasn't for me anymore. But I loved my company, and would recommend it to anyone!
@@TaraOzekin and truth be told the ones who constantly say "don't take it personal" are the same ones who never fly A. So of course it's easier for them. Cuz we all know lead is the worst cabin of entitled folks who will yell at you and berate you over food anything else they don't agree with. Easy for senior FAs to say "don't take it personally" when they haven't done A in 25 years because of that exact reason. Got told the other day by a passenger that I was gonna "make him starve" because we had TWO whole food options left that he simply personally did not want nor did this man preselect. Told me Delta sucked and yadda yadda yadda. All while i had to keep a smile and keep my big girl panties on and continue to serve this entitled prick with "delta grace". The senior mamas in the back couldn't give a shit less about what I had going on up there. You're up there day in and day out dealing again with these kinds of people and even worse issues all the time and crew members that have the luxury of saying "just don't take it personal". Dismissive. It's sad. I'm not a robot. If it was that easy to simply "not take it personal" they wouldn't be avoiding flight lead for 25 years plus.
I applied for 3 years, was rejected by multiple airlines… and I flew for 4. I am still so thankful I did it, but I’m also so glad I’m gone! If you need to experience it, by all means give it a go! It could be great for you. You never know!
@@TaraOzekin This is very interesting to hear. I appreciate this video a lot! I wanted to apply as a FA but cannot everywhere since I am only 158cm :( So my options are quite limited. I am very sorry about the rude comments here, it´s not that easy, life is not just black or white.
Hi hun your video is interesting my name is Brett I have been a flight attendant with the world's largest carrier since 1987 I'm now 56 years Young and to this day I enjoy my career very much when I was younger I partied I went through all that good stuff over the past 10 years I've pretty much settled down it's layover just go to the hotel isolation LOL back to my flight there is a period 10 years ago I was strongly considering quitting point being as I never really had family after the age of 25 30 and I did miss the boat on getting married although I make good mony and I work one flight a week it pays off your story is interesting I just think of more people would give it more time and realize that as you grow older the things that are there for us when we're young disappears automatically they are harder to obtain such as kids family dates yearly impossible and we kind of grow into being a hermit LOL I'm not trying to sound negative at that point the job really takes over and there's such an appreciation for your inner self and the people that you take care of everyday my point of this is that your story is interesting I appreciate it I however wish there was a way more people out there would give it more time because this is a great career this is a great lifestyle but the thing is unfortunately you don't feel that wellness everything I've talked about as far as money and just being in touch with yourself and true joy and true love of life and the career until you work for at least 20 years I'm being totally honest so as I've heard similar explanations both as a supervisor and recruiter of why people quit and your video is interesting thank you for sharing it... Also I do want to apologize for my typos I punctuations and some of the grammar here I'm speaking into my phone my keys are malfunctioning take care of everyone
Apply for cabin crew if you really need a job not because you want to travel or whatever reason, then you can work your way up or out, it's actually what you make of it and it's different strokes for different folks and it is challenging and limiting time wise 😉 but the money is good
I would not encourage getting this job temporarily. You go through too much to get the job in the first place to be doing that. This is absolutely a legitimate career option, and only those who enjoy it should apply. Training alone is tough. Why would you put yourself through that if you don’t like the job? Plus it’s seniority based in most airlines. Things don’t get better until much later in your career. It works differently to more traditional jobs. It’s just absolutely not for everyone.
You couldn't know that you are really going to enjoy it until you have the opportunity to actually do it. I thought 100% I would enjoy every minute. But it's like every other job, where the IDEA is fabulous but when you get to see all sides, you have to weigh the pros and cons. But other than that I agree with you! It works wonderfully for so many people! It can for everyone! In my case, my life circumstances changed, and I had to make the tough choice to leave! I loved my airline and if I ever wanted to fly again I'd absolutely apply there again!
As a nurse who's every work day is a twelve hr day; with most turning into a fourteen or sixteen hr shift, I do understand the exhaustion that back-to-back long shifts bring. This pandemic has required all of us in healthcare to have extremely high patient loads, so lunch or breaks are generally not in sight most days. But, at the end of the day, my patients and their health and well being are all things I swore in my nursing hippocratic oath to be wholly dedicated to. Long story short, I knew what I signed up for. I'm a sympathetic to what your situation was, simply because I'm not so sure that airlines do prepare individuals to know exactly what it is they are in for. However, I lost a bit of this sympathy when you tell us that you did go into this knowing you'd be a commuter. Adding a five/six hour commute to every trip you take is nearly an entire work day for most people. When you tell the airline your willing to live in base, and then choose not to, then that's on you, not them.
Firstly let me say, that I am so grateful to you and your industry for doing what you do. Thank you for being in the very first line of defense during Covid and even through normal life! That’s ok, the job is very different from many other industries. I have my reasons I chose to live where I live, including my husband being in college when we first married. So we obviously couldn’t take him away from there. But beyond that, flight attendants are not required to live in base. Many people fly to base when their duty day begins! I know that’s so different from normal life and it’s hard to wrap your mind around at first- it was for me. But my first year, I commuted to NYC. And then I chose a base I could simply drive to when I found out I was pregnant! It was much easier than the NYC commute. My video isn’t really about wanting sympathy at all and I’m sorry if it came off that way! Just explaining to my co-workers and friends what lead to my decision. And if it helps prepare someone who is interested in the industry, then I’m happy they can go in with more info than I had at the beginning of my career! Have a great day!!
First of all thank you for such great tips, but at some point, I stop caring about the information, you are funny as hell man! The scoot scoot to the camera, and mic drop had me laughing out loud at work lol thank you this video was great ! ❤
Well it’s 9:30 here in Turkey, and let me tell you, I do not regret my time flying. If you’ve landed the gig, GO! Enjoy your time in training, and get the damn wings! You may LOVE it. You never know. Basically my priorities changed, but that doesn’t have to mean it’s a bad job for you! Good luck!
I loved your video. (Liked & subscribed). Laughed out loud several times. You have such a cute personality. Someone I’m sure I would really like as a friend. I wish you well in life.
Thank you for this! Ive been looking of getting a job in an airline company not necessarily a flight attendant because of the long hours and the traveling but looking to work at customer service desk like an agent?? Im 55 years old was recently laid of my banking job and ive always wanted to be a flight attendant I have heard the same horror stories from friends and just solidifies not wanting to be a flight attendant especially at my age. I dont think I can do it and put up with customers like that! I worked in customer service at a bank and we also had nasty customers too! That would call us names all because we are following policy! But as a flight attendant I feel it worse plus your on an entire flight with them. We would call the lolice to get them removed from the premises and be done with that! Sometimes the company would shut down their accounts for treating employees like crap and we wouldn't have to see them again! They didnt tolerate behavior like that!
If customers really get under your skin when they're awful to you, I wouldn't suggest it! But I will say, in my training class, I had SO many "older" people, men and women, in my class. The oldest in my class I believe was 66. Flying isn't just for twenty-somethings! So it's never too late to get into the game IF you want that life style. Likely, if you have kids they're old enough to take care of themselves, so I think 55 would be a fantastic time to get into it! Enjoy those flight benefits now that you have fewer responsibilities! I hope you make the best decision for you and your family!
Honestly I think one of the things that I'm not trying to get too personal but one of the main reasons I've lasted this long on the job is because I am a gay man both a gay flight attendant and a gay man even though I look real good in my age of 56 LOL and I was always very attractive when I was younger the cards go in a different direction if you're in this lifestyle it's more of a singular thing that's why that is a main reason gay males e homosexual make excellent flight attendants ! orgive me for being so straight forward I've been doing this long enough and at my age I'm pretty bold LOL there are times I even walk up to the director of training and the operations supervisor and I give them a piece of my mind LOL they love me I love you and I love you all thanks. Again sorry for my typos I have to replace my phone it's malfunctioning I hope as long as everyone gets the message of my post is what mainly counts thanks for your understanding
Lol I don’t think it’s really only you. I’m much younger than you, I’m a woman tho, and I’m also a FA. You HAVE to be bold sometimes, and if you do it the right way, oooh, it can be so satisfying. I have mastered this art so well, especially with unruly passengers. I can get them to behave when they see I won’t take their stuff. Then again, I’ve learned everything I know about that from y’all. 😅😅
I’m straight but my favorite people and closest friends are always gay. No idea how that happens, but we always hit it off. Just one reason I think I’ll be a good fit for the job
Delta will not hire straight acting and appearing males, espcecially white males. The only ones who get in are internal hires and those are still just a handful. Delta wants diversity and straight white guys don't fit that.
In my training class there were 6 men. 3 straight and 3 gay. The 3 straight guys had 2 white guys. I'd say they care about diversity, and try to include a little bit of everyone!
I worked Ground Underwing and ATO for the commuter wing of a major US Airline You guys are heroes! We used to help clean the cabin on turns! It was fun when I was in it! We had similar arguing situations like that! And these guys were suits arguing over a seat on an ERJ-145! After a 4 Leg day you guys gotta be worn out!
Thank you for saying this!!! I’ve worked for a Major for a long time. My airline does have my back a little better. I’ve had people arrested and had been backed by my company. I love my company! I hope you have the best future!!! I’m following your channel. You pilots call your flight attendants bottom feeders because they aren’t unionized… They reap the benefits of the unionized workers… This made me really upset… We are the same people doing the same job with nearly the same pay in different uniforms… Once again thank you for this post!!!
I think about this all the time, and YES! If we could have moved closer to my base, it would've absolutely changed my outcome! Passengers are still rude, but you face that in every customer-facing job, and I can handle that at the end of the day. In our circumstance at that time, we could not have managed to move (my husband was in college and just beginning his career). I always think that one day I will go back to flying, and hopefully live closer to an airport!
@theteawithtara May I ask, is it easy to trade or drop trips at your airline? Is there any minimum hours to fly in order to keep the travel benefits? How many years you have to fly in order to be retired with full travel benefits?
Oh, I’ve worked with crews before where we dealt quite appropriately with these types. “Sorry, ma’am, you said you can’t breathe? Please let us know if you need an ambulance. We can help escort you out.” One time, during the worst of COVID, it was thanksgiving week, and my plane was FULL going to ATL from my base. A lady started complaining that she didn’t want to sit next to another man, that his seat should’ve been blocked off. I said to her, “ma’am, this flight is full. I don’t have a place to sit where you wouldn’t have a neighbor to either side. You can either come along with us, or if you feel that uncomfortable, we can try rebooking you on another flight.” She didn’t like it, but she sat back down and let the man take his seat. People are spoiled in general. They think every flight they’ll have a row to themselves. It does not work that way!
QUESTION: If you speak a foreign language, are there airports that you would be more likely be assigned as a home base? (Japanese, Mandarin, Dutch, Italian, Hungarian)
Yes, if you spoke Mandarin for example, you would be placed at a base within the US that offers service to China. And you would likely be on many of those International departures. I think in my airlines that was LAX, NYC, DTW, and ATL. If you spoke Dutch, you could have more options because many of the airline's hubs have that service. So at Delta that would be NYC, DTW, ATL, SLC , SEA, PDX, LAX and MSP.
As far as the overhead bins are concerned, I'm thinking this is why airlines now offer to take checked bags at the gate for free, to avoid any mishap by the time everyone gets on the plane, and if they know for sure they're running out of overhead bin space. Intoxicated passengers: I've driven them for Uber, and let me tell ya, they are a PITA. Rude passengers: I've driven them as a shuttle driver for an airport where I live, and I've gotten really good at de-escalation. 😂 That rude passenger for the beer: I wouldn't have even ask that guy if there's anything I could do for him about his delayed flight. As an FA, I'm sure you know that's not your responsibility. Just say sorry and move on. The more you engage with these unruly customers, the more they will do more to try to piss you off because they know it's working. Trust me, I've encountered it many times. I'm sorry that happened to you though. Good point as far as the pilots not coming out to save the passengers. FAs have that heavy responsibility for hundreds of passengers. However, I will say, you pointed at yourself. But you decided to quit. However, I'm glad you decided it was not for you because now someone else can take that position, someone who is willing to fill those shoes.
Delta won't sue you, it would cost them more to fight this and you probably don't have money to pay what they would sue for. They will just blacklist you and nothing more. Plus, Delta does not like bad publicity 😂😂😂😂
Did you get your husband straightened out on family and responsibilities as a dad?? Not belittling you in front of your child?? The girls work doesn’t exist!! As a man….I raised 3 kids alone….they are all grown up now….no issues with there lives….all graduated from college. But, everyone had a duty for the machine to run correctly
For smelta, is there a minimum you must fly no matter seniority? Can you drop trips without penalty? I’m hoping to only fly < 10days/month and want to know how realistic that is..? I’m not concerned about income just wanting to know if I’ll be able to have that control over my schedule where I can work how many days/trips I desire. I know there are reserve days but like for the other trips.. can those be dropped?
Sorry, just now seeing this! There isn't really a "minimum" that you must fly, but there is a minimum to keep your health benefits which is 45 hours per month. Just to be honest though, I could NEVER get my hours less than 75 except during Covid. You can post your trips for drop, (which I always did) but one out of the 6-8 on my line, 1 might actually get picked up. Especially when you're junior and your trips aren't that desirable, they don't drop very easily. As you become more senior and hold my desirable things, (longer layovers, international cities, easy routes) you may start to see some movement in your schedule. Reserve days can also be dropped, if you try hard enough. Again, I wouldn't get your hopes up to do that though! Best of luck to you!
Good question. My 401k is with Fidelity. My account is still open, and it continues to grow interest, but right now nothing is being deposited. When I decide to go back to another job, I just start depositing into the same account again.
And the reason I know is because my job before had a 401k with fidelity as well, and I had 2 separate accounts within fidelity for each job. But the old one rolled into the new one!
Thanks for the Video I have recently turned 25 years old And i would like to be a flight attendant But i don't know if it is late for me to start my career now Please Do you have an advice for me Thanks in advance
It's absolutely not too late! It's really never too late! I had people in my training class that were in their 40's and 50's. My advice is to 1. Apply to many airlines at once 2. In interviews, exude a mentality of helpfulness. Describe how you love to serve others, and how important hospitality is to you. 3. Go to your interviews dressed as though you already have the job, just without any company names or logos. Think blazer, red lips, high heels! The look matters! I wish you the best of luck!
Welcome to parent hood most of my children were like that except the recent ones they were antiedad at young age which was fine by me wife hated it what can u do what can we do good luck good content
Different airlines have different scheduling systems. And there are tricks people can show you to help you with your schedule. As long as you have an awesome support system at home it’s totally possible! You’ll have to try it to decide if it works for you & your kids! Best of luck to you, it can be really rewarding! ❤️
This is why you should vote for a union the fact that you’re scared for your job that’s insane boo boo please come awnnnn get yourself to an airline that cares about you
I can't make this stuff up! I couldn't find him, and then he peeked out, realized it was me, and got out and was like "hey I was just hiding". 😳 That crusty dude is probably still hanging around ATL!
It sounds like to me your a rule follower and it's annoys you when rules are not followed which is understandable I'm the same way. Tha just wasn't the job for you!
I haven't. thought about it this way, but you're right! I do tend to follow the rules, particularly if it involves safety! I always wear my seatbelt! lol
This job IS for rule followers. I myself am a rule follower, and I work as a flight attendant. But I will be the first to tell people: this job is not for everyone. It’s physically demanding, and yes, it’s low pay, especially in the beginning. Yes, you have unruly passengers every once in a while, but if you’re me, you put that stuff to rest. Nothing of what she mentioned (save for her child not adjusting) scares me from this career. I love flying, I feel very free when I am on my plane, and I love wearing my uniform. But again, it’s just not for everyone. People need to understand this before they decide to come do it.
I believe it is good for young people who are single and willing to travel a lot (though their experience in each place is fast and superficial). But some time later they will want to have a relationship, education, social life and lots of things that are not fully available in cabin crew lifestyle.
Did you not do any research on the job before you decided to apply for it?there's hundreds of flight attendants on TH-cam alone who tell the pros and cons of the job and every single point here is gone over by them multiple times, the 18 hour days are your choice, you made the choice to live out of base, this is all knowledge you would have had if you did even 10 minutes research.you sound like you felt the job was beneath you once you were hired.
Yeah reading about it on the internet and experiencing it for yourself are two very different things. It’s not rocket science. No amount of research will tell you how YOU as an individual will react to each challenge. Furthermore, I can tell you first hand, not everything you deal with in real life is (or even can be) covered in a vlog. Most vlogs, as with all social media, only show the positive aspects bc that’s what gets views. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Totally disagree with this comment. There's no job that you can prepare for to experience the worst in human beings. Even if you prepare, you'll still be shocked at some behaviors and unfortunately, it's only gotten worse.
I feel like you may sound ungrateful. I am so sorry if that offends you but to me, you sound rude. I’ve been applying nonstop to that same airline, I’ve been praying to every God and universal being in the world, I’ve been learning a third language for my future flight attendant career, i studied mechanical engineering for 5 years and stopped studying when I realized my passion is in the aviation industry, and I’ve been heart broken over and over again after every rejection. There’s so many people like me that would love the job you gave up. I am glad you are happier truly I am ♥️
I hear you. I'm not offended. I was just like that, I applied to get into the aviation industry for 3 years before I even got an interview. When I got this job, it was a dream come true. But I at that time, I was single, not a mother, and only had to care for myself. Life did a whirlwind 180 degree turn on me. Everything changed when I accidentally became pregnant. I tried to make it work, but found that it was too much for me at that time. But I loved flying. I miss it all the time. That company is THE BEST you could hope to get into, and I truly wish you so much luck with getting the job you desire. So much love
She’s not ungrateful! I used to have the mindset you have; however, you have to realize that sometimes we want something, then we get into it, then we decide it’s not a great fit for us. And it’s okay! Take your issue up with Delta for not hiring you and not her.
She got the Job because she possessed personality traits that you don't have, which that particular airline is looking for. Everything she revealed in this video is 100 percent correct. I flew international for a major US airline for over 30 years. I know. She is not being ungrateful, she is being factual. And if you ever become a F/A, you would or will concur with everything she is saying and then some.
Rosie, it's easy for you to say because you ain't even in yet. Give it time. You might love it, but it's not wrong to not like something. That's not being UNGRATEFUL.
You quitting because of your personal issues with your son is fine. However, everything else you’re complaining about is nothing. Delta is straight forward and honest about how it is your first couple of years. You have to put in your time first. You knew all of this before you got the job. Hard as it is to land a FA position with Delta, and you accepted the position wasting time when someone else could have had your spot. Sounds like you’re just someone who’s not used to hard work. Customer Service is not an easy industry and it can be mentally draining. Like, you didn’t know this?! This entire video sounds like you’ve never worked a day in your life. Like, you literally sound like you didn’t know things like this happens in customer service. What in the world!!
Nothing but great things to say about D. But yes, after this I did decide to leave customer service for good. It isn't for everyone. But I'd never say it was a waste of time, I am so thankful for my experience there.
I worked for them for 5 years as an FA... there is no way someone can truly understand the job without actually having the experience. I think your comment is insensitive and rude. Everything she is saying is true. Being a FA is not for everyone and no she didn't waste anyone's time. Just because she didn't like the job doesn't mean she isn't a hard worker.
My God, is there someone jealous? I was a FA 30 years ago and did everything to get accepted. It was my dream. Just to find out that it is nothing for me at ALL! Could I do it again I would become a pilot.
Ok I get it but was you or any other FA getting paid for you to hold people up and their time just to try to get somebody off the plane for weed I’m glad everybody was on the guys side with the weed , weed is just a plant and it is legal in LA you didn’t stay in your lane .
I actually was 100% in my lane because the on board manual provided by the company actually says that people can not come on board appearing to be intoxicated by any substance nor can they smell of mj. Regardless of whether it’s legal or not. Doesn’t matter if it’s “just a plant” it’s disruptive to passengers around you.
🙄 I don’t think you can know everything about this job until you get hired and live it. Which I did for 4 years. Loved my company, not the job, so I left. That’s life.
@@TaraOzekin - Just out of curiosity, could you have stayed with the airline, but perhaps in a different department of the company? Possibly as a FA trainer, or working in crew scheduling or some type of administrative occupation that would have allowed you a more balanced home life? I'm not criticizing your decision, it's just a curiosity question. Anyway, Cheers from GEG!
@@RustySax1949 absolutely, there are opportunities like this within the airline. My circumstance was that I lived 2 hours from base! So we would’ve had to move into the base city to take advantage of that! And while I welcome change, we couldn’t afford to make a move like that at the time!
@@TaraOzekin - Thanks, appreciate your response, and I totally understand your commute to base dilemma. Hope things are settling down for you and hubby, and you can cherish the time with your little one - it goes by far too quickly!! Funny story, and you may have heard this already: I work at GEG, and I see flight crews from the main lines coming/going to their layovers daily. A few days ago, a Southwest FA, who often says hello, shared with me that a passenger on his flight said that your former airline's name is actually an acronym that stands for "Didn't Even Leave The Airport" since they've been experiencing so many delays and cancellations. Got a chuckle out of that one! Cheers from GEG!
Why? because the airline I worked for flies there? I have no control over that... And if you're so offended by someone even uttering the name of a city where people you don't like live, then by all means, goodbye. I made this video longggg before the conflict in Gaza erupted in 2023 and you do not know my political views on it. So goodbye, I don't need anyone jumping to conclusions on my channel. I'm married to a Muslim by the way.
I agree with you as a Muslim, like how can saying the name of a city bother you , we know that that land telaviv and all palestine belongs to Palestinians (muslims and Christians) than we shouldn't be offended , plus how can you know her political views and what she thinks from one word , that's irrational ,keep going I enjoyed your video it s very informative and free Palestine ❤
Informative and honest♥️ Thank you!
You're my hero
You still flight attend
I quit my flight attendant job because of all the uncertainty, and the very low pay! I started a flight attendant TH-cam channel too. But was always too fatigue to even upload anything. I'm now living a more peaceful life. Peace and blessings to you.
I certainly relate to you, friend. I loved my layovers, but I was too exhausted to enjoy my life. I hope you're doing well
@journeywithlady: Did you try your luck with a mainline? they pay way more than a regional airline.
@@genten777 actually no....but maybe in the future....I do now honestly just a little bit miss the lifestyle.
“It was the most fun that I never wanna have again” PERFECT way to describe it
Hi, I left a post last week off my phone which was not working properly. I am on my computer now and I would like to clearly state what I posted. I am not sure if my information is help full here. I would just like to give people that are Flight Attendants or want to be a Flight attendant a clear understanding of the reality of the lifestyle (job)
I don't wish to discourage any one however I feel people need to hear the truth.
I recall one time we had a trip to chili and a man was going crazy on board... as we had a mechanical problem
Again sorry for the run-on sentence. I just bought a new phone tonight. So 'll be mindful about my periods punctuations and grammar.
I truly hope you find something that allows you to heal your body and mind. 8 years has been a long time and you deserve some peace! Best of luck!
Amen ❤that’s why I’m changing after I graduate from my current position after training going to go back to charter
Tara spoke the truth. Especially, on certain airlines people act entitled and think that they can treat everyone on the ✈️ abusively.
Thank you. I've had lots of comments making it out that I am overly sensitive. Guess what! I AM! lol. People are mean!
Becuz u are considered a waitress in the *air*
@@donnabaardsen5372 Bravo! As a lifelong American, I couldn't agree more. America is lost.
It’s not for everyone! 25 years strong; 2 airlines. I love it ❤
Agreed! And Congratulations on 25 years! Wow!
It can be a fun job at times but like any job it's not perfect! Life is what you make it!
I got hired a CJO in the spring but turned it down due to a quicker turnaround than I was expecting so I’m reapplying next month now that timing works out
It works well for a lot of people. I hope you get the job this time around! Best of luck.
It’s not everyone. I absolutely agree with your reasons. However, I like the job as an FA. I came from a 9-5, and can’t go back to a 9-5. Your reasons are so true though.
8 years in and will be resigning too. You are not alone ❤
Isnt it so TIRING its like doing chores in a plane 😂
Being a flight attendant isn’t made for anyone

Tara, you totally nailed the ambivalence of FA life, and in such a way that it left me wanting more of your content.
I'm sorry. I'm a people person but I don't like dealing with foolishness. Ugh making me rethink my interest in flight attendant. Thanks for sharing!
If you’re very thick skinned, it can be wonderful. I however am NOT! Lol. I get my feelings hurt and it kept me up at night!
Your story made me feel validated.
LOL

Just loved this video! and I will be using Shelta code word when I get ready to share my experience......
Can't wait to hear it!
I loved this video! I recently applied but I got rejected after a few stages, and now I realise it could be a blessing in disguise :)
I applied for 3 years, was rejected by multiple airlines… and I flew for 4. I am still so thankful I did it, but I’m also so glad I’m gone! If you need to experience it, by all means give it a go! It could be great for you. You never know!
@@TaraOzekin will do!! Thank you ❤ Do take care as well! 😊
@@TaraOzekin This is very interesting to hear. I appreciate this video a lot! I wanted to apply as a FA but cannot everywhere since I am only 158cm :( So my options are quite limited. I am very sorry about the rude comments here, it´s not that easy, life is not just black or white.
If someone is intoxicated when you go to check your luggage, and get your boarding pass. They should refuse you at the gate.
True. It gets better with time!
That is the nicest thing anyone has ever said! Thank you!

Good luck!

People leave the airline industry for various reasons including low pay, lack of flexibility, stress, etc.
Theres alot of Old Flight Attendants in Delta mostly OLD LADIES on their 60s take a look 🎉age is not a matter the older the better in delta
Everything you have said is on point. ❤❤❤
I love reading your words. You're so polite and kind.
I'd say they care about diversity, and try to include a little bit of everyone!
thoroughly enjoyed this video Tara! thank you ☺️
Yeap I’m about to quit too!
You work for Delta?
QUESTION: If you could've lived maybe 30-45min from your home base, would that have changed your decision to leave?
I think about this all the time, and YES! If we could have moved closer to my base, it would've absolutely changed my outcome! Passengers are still rude, but you face that in every customer-facing job, and I can handle that at the end of the day.
In our circumstance at that time, we could not have managed to move (my husband was in college and just beginning his career). I always think that one day I will go back to flying, and hopefully live closer to an airport!
@@TaraOzekin I do this and live just 10 minutes from the airport and even that is hard enough. Commuting is really difficult.
Thank you for being so honest!! Since, you have a young son, it’s best you be at home with him.. Bottom line..
@theteawithtara May I ask, is it easy to trade or drop trips at your airline? Is there any minimum hours to fly in order to keep the travel benefits? How many years you have to fly in order to be retired with full travel benefits?
Honestly those who complained about masks are worth dirt! If y’all sooooooo concerned about masks and traveling then DONT TRAVEL!
Oh, I’ve worked with crews before where we dealt quite appropriately with these types. “Sorry, ma’am, you said you can’t breathe? Please let us know if you need an ambulance. We can help escort you out.”
One time, during the worst of COVID, it was thanksgiving week, and my plane was FULL going to ATL from my base.
That rude passenger for the beer: I wouldn't have even ask that guy if there's anything I could do for him about his delayed flight.
I really don't think my husband needs to be straightened out. He took on a lot of responsibilities while I was away 3-5 days a week.
And by gone, I mean, I'm not coming home at the end of a work day. I'm just.. gone.
Hey Tara, How long did you work with Smelta? :) and was it long enough to have the flight benefits for life? Thx
I worked for 4 years, and no, I left with no benefits. I think it’s 10 years.
@@TaraOzekin thank you sooo much for the detailed response ❤ well wishes and abundance
What if you quit, what happens to your 401K
Good question. My 401k is with Fidelity. My account is still open, and it continues to grow interest, but right now nothing is being deposited. When I decide to go back to another job, I just start depositing into the same account again.
And the reason I know is because my job before had a 401k with fidelity as well, and I had 2 separate accounts within fidelity for each job. But the old one rolled into the new one!

Please Do you have an advice for me
Thanks in advance
It's absolutely not too late! It's really never too late! I had people in my training class that were in their 40's and 50's.
My advice is to
1. Apply to many airlines at once

Different airlines have different scheduling systems. And there are tricks people can show you to help you with your schedule. As long as you have an awesome support system at home it’s totally possible! You’ll have to try it to decide if it works for you & your kids! Best of luck to you, it can be really rewarding! ❤️

I haven't. thought about it this way, but you're right!

I did my research. And I worked there for 4 years. My priorities changed. Bye.
And what is your occupation?
Retail sales, but thankfully, it's a remote position.

So Delta and Covid. Got it!
Atlas love it my business name ❤
Thank you Lauren!!! I hope you are still enjoying your time with them!
My God, is there someone jealous? I was a FA 30 years ago and did everything to get accepted. It was my dream. Just to find out that it is nothing for me at ALL! Could I do it again I would become a pilot.
@@ca819 Jealous of what? I’m currently a FA just not for Delta
You cannot smuggle drugs on an airplane unless you want to go to jail lol
Good god.
Be quiet.
It’s called being a flight attendant you knew all this when you were hired
People like you are the exact reason airlines lose great employees.
Take a Greyhound.
I was watching the Video till you say tel aviv . Good bye👋🏻
Why? because the airline I worked for flies there?
