Rick's first really great cut was "You And I", and it really is perhaps the prime example of his style of "punk funk". His song "Mary Jane" is IMO his wittiest. However, "Give It To Me Baby" was great as well. His duet with Teena Marie "Fire And Desire", his greatest ballad (better than "Ebony Eyes" IMO) shows that Rick could actually sing as well. Teena's vocals though destroys that cut.

I literally used to have a party in my car with this song it has all the climactic sounds of a party along with the base and the lyrics. Back in the early '80s. I had the best HiFi system in the neighborhood along with the best Chicano lowrider. I've always liked the way they Incorporated the deep sax with the Deep base. Rick James credited prison time for saving his life. Couple years later he dies of an overdose. He created a song regarding his bust. It's a kind of reggae mix. The name of the song is Down By Law.

Random fact. In 1966, Ricky James Matthews was the lead singer of a Canadian band, The Mynahbirds. They got signed to MOTOWN. The guitarist quit abd was replaced by a then unknown Neil Young. Then Ricky got busted for being AWOL from the US Navy. MOTIWN dropped the band. Neil and bassist Bruce Palmer drove to LA a d founded Buffalo Springfield. Later Ricky got out of the brig and got signed as a songwriter for MOTOWN*⁰. He changed his name and became Rick James.

I’m sure you’ve heard the song “ Super Freak”, but probably didn’t know who it was, and probably heard the song “ Can’t Touch This “ by M C Hammer, and didn’t know where that music came from( it came from Super Freak). Just one of the many legendary funk jams of Rick James, who had many hits from the 70’s to the 90’s. You have a deep rabbit hole to dive into when you talk about Rick James, who also was a legendary songwriter and producer, musician , arranger and entertainer, who even did a little acting also. He’s so much more than the guy Dave Chappelle portrayed. I wish he was still living and healthy, he would still be dropping the jams. Unfortunately his fast lifestyle outlasted him , may he Rest In Peace , his musical legacy lives on and on!

I have grandchildren. I am GanGan. I cannot show anyone how I danced on this song. Suffice it to say that I shook my body down to the ground. One of my ABSOLUTE favorites by the late, great Rick James. The original Slick Rick. The King of Punk Funk. 😊🎼💛

You had to be in shape when you went to the club in those days. All the dance jams lasted over 10 minutes. Check out Brothers Johnson- Strawberry 23.

Saw him in person twice in the 70s and 80s, once with Teena Marie on stage with him. A show that no one would ever forget both times brought the house down. They both had exceptional talent!

Rick began his career with an early 70s sound-literally hanging out with Neil Young, of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and…
When drugs began to seriously affect him, he was arrested for torturing a young woman (as I recall he tied her up & burned her with cigarettes, awful stuff). Such a talent, and such a huge, sad fall.

Rick and Teena Marie at the BET awards is my all time favorite R.J. performance. they were older, Rick had just suffered a few strokes, they still rocked, and it was so passe and , I dunno, over the top stereotypically mushy, corny, (?) I can't explain it, but it was awesome ! I couldn't sit down. I'd like to see a reaction to it. I don't know that anyone has. It's only second in my ' Holy Crap' list for Rick to " I'm Rick James... b***h !"

You gotta check out his hit, Give it to Me Baby, as well as the girl group he created, the Mary Jane Girls. He wrote some great songs for them with his trademark killer hooks, including All Night Long and In My House. Check those out too. You’ll love them.

Rick had a huge range musically. That solo you called xylophone was actually jazz artist (and Rick's friend) Roy Ayers on vibraphone ("vibes"). The chant was "Roy, don't stop!" He has a great catalog too, and the sax was from Danny Lemelle from Rick's own Stone City Band. If you want to see Rick *ACT* (!!) look for the official video for Rick's song "Glow."

What's the difference between a xylophone and vibraphone? They sound the same to my uneducated ear.
