My first test in freshman calculus had this question (33% of my grade). "Prove that the volume of a parallelepiped can calculated from the complex cross product of the defining vectors". The only word I understood was "volume".
The vectors a, b and c define three of the sides (as long as they're not coplanar... safest bet is to use the three sides emanating from a single corner), then the volume is (a × b)·c. Proving it comes from one of the cross product's equalities, namely p × q = |p||q| sin θ ◌̂r (where θ is the angle between p and q, and ◌̂r is a unit vector perpendicular to both p and q) and equating that first to the area of a parallelogram when given a slant height rather than a perpendicular height. To extend to a parallelepiped, you observe that (a × b)·c = |a||b| sin θ |c| cos φ, where φ is the angle between ◌̂r and c. So in full, the area is |a||b||c| sin θ cos φ. All you have to do then is derive the same equation through regular geometry.
Err sin(a)/a etc is plane geometry, not spherical! Spherical geometry would use sin(A)/ sin(a) One would assume he just studied standard trigonometry/plane geometry at school as this is basic stuff taught in every school in the uk (although I guess almost everyone forgets it - but not too much as everyone kind of remembers it once reminded - hence the joke works.)
