    This really does feel like a dream, just going from one weird place to the next with no explanation. Grey Doomguy watching you like Half-Life’s Gman is creepy, especially since it came as a surprise to you as well!

    • @GermanPeter
      @GermanPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think, if I remember correctly, I put the other Doomguy there specifically to mess with players (like it did for me), and they were also meant to follow them around. I just never got around to doing the latter :D

    11:13 in 1997 in the Eternal Doom Alex Mayberry pulled off similar stuff in both maps 01 and 06. It's a fully vanilla trick, so you can use it even in some pure vanilla maps. You need to place multiple really small sectors (24 or less map units in height) and you literally created a staircase, but it is so steep that is impossible to tell if it even there

    You know, normally I'd watch your video on the spot, but seeing there was a wad, I IMMEDIATELY downloaded it and started playing through it. Your level design is just great. Seriously! Your texture work, your switches, traps, all of it. I love the vibes and feelings of these rooms and the fights within them. I'm not quite done with it yet, but I just wanted to let that out. This wad fucking rules. I absolutely look forward to any more you intend to make!

    So much ripping and tearing.

  • @RadikAlice
    @RadikAlice ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The similarities are funny. But I relate to the entire concept of this video, even inspired me to return to mine
    My particular obsession is Duke 3D-like urban environments, and that's where the idea kicked off.
    Also a lot more projects, like. A WAD taking place in a Sin City-style world that mocks Frank Miller's writing
    Also yeah, the wedding ring thing is interesting. Walls bit is funny. Also, 20:37 Pinkie jumpscare

    The Adventures of Square has a cool and very simple ladder mechanic that just pushes you vertically when you move against a wall. And when using it on a 3D midtexture or a lower wall, it only happens when the wall's being actually touched. I like Doom platforming, especially the ZDoom-powered kind with actual jumping and crouching! The stair-climbing mechanic working in midair and helping you jump across gaps is such a cool gimmick that makes it feel more realistic than having to land directly on top of a platform.

    Quite fascinating, I've to say. I've just recently (and from recently, I mean just about two days ago) got Ultimate Doom Builder, and I've been getting around to the basics and it was rather wonderful to see the neat little tricks that you've had used in your own learning process.
    One of the neat tricks to create climbable walls in Doom is to place a staircase and turn each of the steps almost paper thin, so visually, it'd be almost impossible to tell if it's a flat wall texture or a group of sectors. I believe Eternal Doom from 1996 used this to create faux ladders. TNT also somewhat tries to use this trick in the map Shipping/Respawning, but their ladders there look more like safety regulations violating staircases instead.
    Also, really interesting to see the small little coincidences of having similarities to Myhouse.wad. It's just one of those little things. I quite liked the temple/castle/fort part of this. Genuinely well done, even when it was lacking in detail. I'm certainly making sure that my own 3 episode wad will have a small "coincidence" of sharing similarities with those parts of your map :P

    I don't remember how but I do recall that you can change how longer a player can stay under water but in the case of stopping the player from floating all the way to the ceiling, its best to use a 3d floor set as swimmable as that allows you to control how high (or how low) a player can go and set the alpha of the sector to 0 so it doesnt render the texture. Speaking of 3d floors, you can use 3d floors to make floating liquids, and said liquids can also still harm the player if you want it too.

    • @GermanPeter
      @GermanPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh, I already know a much better way of making climbable walls these days, even without liquids :D

    Now, discounting the obvious ARG bait, my thought process for putting a decorative npc up in that hole, is to showcase to the player that there is a world outside, without necessarily blowing more time on designing a more detailed backdrop.

    • @GermanPeter

    things peter likes about deserts: large, endless, barren, being alone
    other things peter likes: tf2 (has guns and killing), gas stations (isolated from populated society), myhouse.wad (scary)
    peter is the horror movie killer CONFIRMED 😱
    jokes aside, havent played this map but it looks real good :] id like to see it remastered or reworked on some day lol

    i made a wad kinda like the temple one you showed once. it was one of the only wads i ever made and it wasnt finished.
    it had the same asethetic, and textures, and it was themed around the trope of nazis finding ancient artifacts to gain power lol. so it used a lot of SS guards. it began with doomguy getting raised out of a coffin shaped hold in the floor kinda like the first level of blood.
    i was fairly proud ofi t despite it being a complete slaughter map on any difficulty higher than hurt me plenty lol.

    • @GermanPeter
      @GermanPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think you could still revisit this anew, but limit your scope on how long each part is.

    • @GermanPeter
      @GermanPeter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think so, because it really was product of its time. Each new gimmick I put in there was something that I learned how to do at the time. I couldn't just go back to all of that, because being fascinating by a new feature, putting it in there and then immediately moving on was how the whole WAD was structured. Since I'm not as fascinated by these things anymore, that energy would be lost.
