The Incredible Fujifilm XT1 Today

  • I wanted this camera so badly when it came out in 2014. I finally picked one up a year ago, and it lived up to all my expectations. Some Fujifilm cameras are super pricey right now, but the X-T1 I think represents a ton of value. You really can't go wrong. I sold it anyway, and I explain that in the video. I hope the next owner enjoys it :)
    Two more Fujifilm camera reviews coming soon. Even older than this one. Plus some other amazing content (if I do say so myself).

    Fun fact about the X-T1: If you put it in electronic shutter mode with a relatively fast exposure, you can twist/jerk the camera for creative effects with the rolling shutter. If you have one (or a similar older-generation Fuji), I recommend playing around with it. More modern cameras read out the sensor too fast to do that anymore.

      Особенно сильно этот эффект проявляется, когда фотографируешь в окно из автомобиля или поезда) но иногда это и мешает... Фотографируешь портрет, а лицо на снимке в 1.5 раза шире, чем на предыдущих фотографиях)

    Really surprised this camera did not speak to you. I love my Fujifilm XT5, it is amazing for use with vintage glass as when combined with the film sims it is essentially the closest thing to film you can ever achieve in camera.

      @unbroken1010 its about the shooting experience.
      Yes, there is a decades difference in technology in between, however the xt-n series is distinctly is own class of camera with features, experience and feel that belong to it, and it only in fujifilms line up, and market as a whole.

    If you like that tilt screen you might love the one on the X-T2, 3 and 5. They also flip out like that, but also to the side so that you can look down at the screen when shooting in portrait orientation.
    This video made me a little nostalgic, I got that camera in 2015 and I loved it.

    Did you ever shoot with the original 35mm f1.4? It’s a truly magical lens and is the primary reason I have always returned to Fuji. There’s just something intangible about the images it produces that I’ve never found in another lens. The field curvature is wonky, the bokeh is a bit busy, it looses contrast wide open, etc. but the images are somehow special. Other favorites include the 18mm f/2, 23mm f/2 and the Zeiss 32mm f/1.8. All of the newer glass is whatever sharpness is king fodder but those old lenses were made by someone with a deep passion for photography and it’s those lenses that are what make Fuji special for me. If you haven’t tried them I would circle back to Fuji at some point and give them a spin, especially the 35mm 1.4 R.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      When I end up back in Fuji land I definitely will give those a try. I've actually never shot with a Fujifilm brand lens. (well, modern, I have fujinon lenses)

    • @AnthonyJGianotti
      @AnthonyJGianotti 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@snappiness I think they will change your mind on Fuji even if they’re a bit too modern for your typical taste. For me those lenses in particular do the one thing that I look for in any camera/lens. When I upload and open the photos the images produced put a smile on my face.

    • @alibarancelik8903
      @alibarancelik8903 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would wholeheartedly support the 35mm f1.4 comment. It's pretty much glued to my X-T2. I have a massive pile of vintage and modern glass, including some legends, but that lens rarely comes off the camera. Yes, it sounds like a fax machine but for me, it adds to the charm.

    Enjoyed the video. I've been wanting a Fuji for a long time, and I think 16mp is my favorite sensor size (I often pick up my K-5 over my K-3iii because I like the SOOC images better). So the X-T1 is probably the one I'll get once the price comes down enough.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

  • @neilgrover1585

    I always enjoy your reviews James. I also like how you typically adopt well used copies of older cameras. Something is usually broken, gaffer taped, or in this case has a "beautiful patina". Shopping for used gear in "poor condition" is counter to how I've typically gone about it, but recently I picked up a well-loved Olympus OMD EM5 II and it feels liberating to just chuck it in my bag without worrying about scratching the body. Well loved cameras make good friends. I'm coming around.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As long as it doesn't have broken buttons. xD I've thought to myself "of that won't bother me too much" and then get really annoyed. But if a camera is just ugly aesthetically, I'm all about that.

    I think with so many cameras available that are perfectly good from a technical capability perspective, it is increasingly important to lean on that intangible feeling that will get you taking photos. For whatever reason, if it doesn't make you want to create, it's not right.

    The X-T1 is such an amazing camera, in fact probably one of the best second hand options available, especially if you don't need the latest features. Image quality is beautiful. I will say though, if you can find one cheap, the X-T2 is also a great option to consider.

    I'm back to the XT1 and X70 after upgrading a few times and trying different manufacturers. XPRO2 did not like the 'pull up' ISO dial and images had just lost something to me. Felt same with XH1 then had a year with Lumix GX9 and micro four thirds. Lightning fast af but felt uninspiring and wasn’t grabbing when going out like i used to. When going back through my past 5 years plus of captures, (street, portraits and urbex), came to the conclusion that my trusy old T1 and the XTrans 16mp sensor were the 'sweet spot' for me. Haven't got to be as patient as using the PR01 but if you get your head around it it's a peach of a camera and can find pretty good deals second hand and then have money for some decent glass. 👌

    I like very much your approach to photography. I currently use a Nikon D810 which I love, primarly for macro and nature photography, but I am looking for a more compact camera I could use everyday with my AI and AIS lenses. Well, as my aim is compactness, I leaned toward mirrorless cameras and realized... Damn, I don't like EVF. I work almost everyday on a computer and, like you said, EVF is just another screen to look at. Plus I just like to see the scene trough my OVF, you see the actual light and not the interpretation of the lightning by your camera. I just want a full frame digital sensor to stick in my Nikon F3hp hahaha !

    I've owned one since 2015 and finally decided to sell it yesterday as it's been collecting dust for a few years. First problem was that the leatherette came of and made the whole thing goey and very unpleasing to use but the second thing is completely personal and I have concluded that I just don't like the feedback I get from pressing the shutter. A really minor thing, but all my DSLRs (Nikon D3, Canon EOS 350D, Olympus E400 and Pentax K20D) have a much more satisfying feel to them. I hope someone else gets more enjoyment out of the camera than I have recently :)

Sure i am hyped for a more user friendly design, but man this cam made so many memories for me and the pics are outstanding! Its still brand new, only "issue" it seems to have is, that i dont need to keep the button pressed to change the shutter speed..man i wish it had the same "problem" with the iso ring...the usability would be so much faster :D. If i didnt got the xt 3 with various batteries, batterygrip, flash and sd cards i would not have upgraded it ^^

      Οwn a Pentax KP and a Fuji XT3.
      I can definitely say that when it comes to quick settings the KP is far superior. Of course the 5 user modes and the 3rd wheel of the KP help a lot (did own a K70 for a short while in the past and can't remember much about camera customization). Everything that don't fit there you can find on the quick settings screen (Fuji doesn't have such)
      On Fuji you really need to dive into deep menus a lot.
      Anyway, I can say with certainty that except for 1. the silent/faster/precise AF, 2. the (somewhat overhyped since I still prefer shooting RAW) jpeg profiles of the Fuji and 3. more lens options especially fast primes concerned the KP is a better camera in almost every aspect. Superior IQ as well!

    Most people think buying the Latest camera model is the Best in their mind. XT5 40 megs, latest X Trans and others features that they don't even use or need it. Beside I'm not sure XT5 building quality is Better than XT1 or XT2 Made in Japan. To me I still prefer XT1 and 2 pictures quality. They have something special than All the lastest Releases Don't.

    Them's the breaks. You can't force yourself to live something if it doesn't speak to you. No matter how good it is otherwise.

    I love the design of the camera but the photos are a little too hazy for my liking

      @snappiness  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Some of that was probably the glass I was using on it + my editing/jpeg output style. I think the camera itself can take any style of photo you want really.

      With the native optics there is no haziness at all unless you really shoot in strong backlight. I use an XT10, same sensor-processor.

      Yeah, the prices have fluctuated a lot in the last year or two. XT2 is only $100 more, so probably worth the little extra cash.

      Not so. I have thousands of perfect images from my XT1 days. I prefer the slightly underexposed look. The author may prefer slightly overexposed. It is a matter of taste.

    Horrible, horrible horrible raw files. The sensor in my cheap amateur model X-T100 is lightyears ahead of that horribly undetailed mushy 16mp x-trans sensor with bad dynamic range... NO NO NO, dont buy it. Go for next generation 24mp x-trans sensor if you must have a fujifilm camera.
