  • Now Available, “Going Somewhere,” the highly anticipated second solo album by Rachel Flowers!

On February 11, 2012 Rachel was privileged to play Keith Emerson's modular moog. To see Keith Emerson's introduction and excerpts of Trilogy and Hoedown, go here:
    • Rachel Flowers on the ...
Rachel decided to play Tarkus near the end of what had been quite an eventful day, as you might well imagine! The audio was recorded on a Zoom H4 digital recorder. Video was shot using two cameras - a Zoom Q3HD and a Canon Rebel T3i. Good thing I had both cameras running, as 4 1/2 minutes into the piece, the Zoom video camera's memory was full and I had to switch to a second memory card. Then around 12 minutes in the battery in the Canon died and I had to put in a new battery! Made for some fun times editing it all together, but thank goodness the audio track was constant!
This took place at the home of Gene Stopp, and Rachel is playing Gene's Hammond C3 running through a pair of Leslie speakers, and of course Keith Emerson's "Beast," the most famous synthesizer in the world. I wish youtube could convey the power of those two instruments in that room on that day - the sound was incredible! It may not be quite the same as being there, but all I can say is, turn it up to eleven!!

"Let's see, let me play some really difficult AND iconic music.
Oh yes, and I should add an actual period instrument, actually owned by one of the actual creators of said iconic music.
Oh wait, I know, I'll just do it solo, even though it's originally written for a progressive rock trio.
Heck, I'll just tap out some of the drum solo parts on this bench here.
Hm, no bass player. Guess I'll have to play those parts with my feet.
Wait, what about all those timbre changes, enabled in the original recordings by multiple keyboards and multitrack recording? Damn, I guess I'll just have to do all those drawbar switches on the fly. While playing. Solos. Oh, better also change the portamento time on the synth. While soloing. And playing kick bass.
But what about the vocal parts? Sheesh, I guess I'll have to play the vocal parts on the organ, and adapt them so that they sound really soulful and not at all like the usually stilted way it sounds when most people play a vocal tune on a keyboard that doesn't have pitch bend..
And while I guess it'd be a good idea to grab huge pieces of the original guy's solos, I should probably develop my own style as well, still retaining the original harmonic approach, but just, you know, extrapolate on it a bit, maybe throw in some modal jazz influences. While kicking bass. And while whatever free fingers I have left are flying across the drawbars creating those dramatic swells, assisted by one of my feet, whenever one of them isn't playing some bass line.
Let's see.. I think I've got everything on the list. Oh yeah, I better also make sure I do it musically and with as much spirit and fire as the original. Oh, and have as much fun as I can, of course, that goes without saying. And what the heck, I'll just add "make it look easy" to the list, otherwise it might not be much of a challenge.
It's good that I'm getting this out of the way now, while I'm only NINETEEN. Because this could take maybe the rest of the afternoon, and I'd really like to get some sight reading in and tackle some of these cool new Braille transcriptions I got!"

Emerson was so much more than a "Progressive Rock" icon. I dislike people calling him a "Prog Rock keyboard player", that's like limiting him to a certain style. Genres aside, he was quite simply one of the greatest keyboard players in the world playing MANY different styles! And now we have Rachel Flowers!

I've heard many musicians with prodigious talent play Tarkus. Many pulled it off perfectly, note for note. But this rendition right here by Rachel, and the one on solo piano are by far two of the best renditions I have heard. They have so much soul and depth, that you begin to see past the complexity of the composition and just revel in its beauty. Thank you Rachel.

My brother bought Tarkus LP in 1976, after discovering ELP at the age of 14, and I, at the age of 12, did not understand this music.
It wasn't long, through hundreds of times the record was played in our home, until I loved ELP and became a huge fan of prog rock.
Now my brother is no more among us, I'm 53, and I'm still a fan of prog rock, of ELP, and every time I listen to Tarkus, I am overwhelmed by a tsunami of emotions, but this particular version is way beyond heaven.
I'm sure my brother would be delighted to listen to it.

Wow! As a keyboard player for 45 years, I feel qualified to say this. She is as close as I've ever heard playing Emerson's compositions. Having some of his equipment helps, yet it's all in the fingers and mastery of the instrument you play. Then there comes the gift that few musicians have; the ability to transfer emotion from your brain into your finger tips for someone's ears complete enjoyment and wonderment. Guitar players like David Gilmour and Gary Moore have/had this ability. She Does This with Trilogy - I can really feel it. She does a great job with Tarkus - hell! I'm been trying to master it for 10 years. I just wish she would have played Stones Of Years the way Keith did on Welcome Back My Friends... It's nice to know that Keith's legacy lives on in the form of Rachel Flowers. Keith will never die so long as there are those that play is music - his passion. Thank you Rachel, you're a gift. Sincerely, Brad Decker

Rachel, I actually enjoy hearing YOU more than the original album because 1) I've known the music intimately since '72 and 2) hearing how impeccably you capture the exact harmonic structures (Emerson's harmonic detail and originality is simply amazing) makes me thrill to Keith's compositions in a fresh, unjaded way-the way I did when I was 15 and, 3) I LOVE your improvisations!!! Your interpretations are exactly what Keith would thrill to hear: he created this fantastic body of music that is, for you, a playground you've made your own, and you're having SO much fun with it! THAT'S WHAT MUSIC SHOULD BE. Again, I'm having more fun listening to you. My friend, you return to me the very essence of the thrill of music! I adore you!

Have a listen to Ligeti's Études. These were composed for the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who had a reputation for being able to play anything set in front of him. The composer set out to defeat this prodigious talent, who did eventually master them.

Some of Messiaen's works for piano and organ sound fiendishly difficult too. 😎

I've followed the life of ELP and mainly Keith Emerson since I was 13 years old, today I'm 62 years old. Do the math and you will know that my life is crossed by all three. I was proud to see them live three times, four times if I count the Carl Palmer Band CPB. When Keith died I cried for several days because he was unique and unrepeatable with Greg, until yesterday 02/19/2021 I met through Keith himself introducing Rachel, after having seen and heard her on 02/11/2013. Offering him his studio, his instruments and his most precious treasure, the Modular Moog, to learn how to play. I then investigated with deep emotion that Emerson entered his life practically from the time he was in front of an instrument (since she is a multiple instrumentalist) for the first time as a 6-year-old girl.
That's why when he introduced her to her fans. Knowing that several years before she had already dazzled, interpreting the entire repertoire of ELP when she was a child.
As she did with her son Aaron hers, he offered to teach her how to use all of her instruments, primarily her custom made Modular Moog, as it is not known if Bob Moore built another. Such was his surprise, seeing that she had researched everything about him Modular Moog, enough to tell him only a few secrets. The rest he knew as much as he. To make things easier for you, I have seen that they built a touch adapter that synthesizes all the functions in a musical pattern as if it were an accordion.
So it was that I think he took her as her disciple and her friend because not only was he proud of her, but he understood that she interpreted as much or more than Aaron, Such was Keith's admiration for Rachel that he brought his Modular Moog to her house, as he had, in addition to the grand piano, a Hammond with bass pedals to emulate without the need for a bass player.
It seems that long before his death, he has been in charge of telling his relatives that Rachel for music was one of the family. And today I see that they often bring the instruments to his house or rehearse directly in his old studio like Aaron and his grandson Ethan.
See how she gets emotional with his interpretations without copying him, with his whole body with Keith's Karma, but with his own imprint that allowed her to make harmonic variations that Emerson surely celebrated.
If you talk about crying, just seeing her cry inconsolably over the death of he friend and Mentor in the Tribute who played Keith, to then be her soloist in the Keith Emerson Orchestra, I simply stopped the image and prepared several handkerchiefs to follow th-cam.com/video/Zb7G_K5iRBk/w-d-xo.html and in less than 24 hours of having met her I still have not completed her repertoire, because I see and hear Keith Emerson reincarnated as Rachel Flowers, a blind angel from birth of only 27 years old who does not know colors except the black that she makes it luminous, since she does not need to see, to recover to my joy again the spiritual union of Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and the orphan of his brothers Carl Palmer, reunited in the same musician. Being the only person in the world, I imagine besides Aaron, who runs the Modular Moog, without anyone teaching him, even the adapter that synthesizes all the functions in a musical pattern as if it were an accordion that he handles with his left hand with such mastery, that Keith's own sound engineer hardly has to help her, and mainly because she and Keith taught together since 11/02/2013 even today in their hearts I'm sure they still do. Bravo Rachel for giving me Keith Emerson back. th-cam.com/video/x7qujZpMHbA/w-d-xo.html

    Dear Rachel,
I grew up with the music of Keith Emerson and was a big fan of The Nice and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It was very sad when I heard about Keith Emerson's early suicide, because he was a part of my youth.
Acidentially I found your interpretations of the old ELP classics on TH-cam. It is so wonderful to see that also young people can be enthusiastic about this great music of Keith and ELP. It has moved me to tears, that a young woman, who has also a severe fate as Keith Emerson, is bringing back his music to life.
The genious musician Keith Emerson, who has given his life a too early end due to the loss of his sleight of hand, lives on in a young woman, who has lost her eyesight!
I thank you so much for bringing Keith Emerson's music back to my live and memory. I wish you the very best from the bottom of my heart. Stay strong! You are a gift for man and everyone in love with the music of Keith Emerson. Thank you so much!
    Yours sincerly Kay

So, how does one clearly too young to have been exposed to this music when it first burst on the scene 1) become familiar with it and 2) appreciate it on such a grand level? I sometimes get sad at the notion that the prog rock genre really never recovered its original popularity and that the quality of the music has been spotty at best (sorry, none of the neo-prog bands do it for me..), compared to nascent bands of the early 70s. So, when I see (hear...) examples of yung-uns embracing it, I can't help but smile. What a lovely talent you are, Ms. Flowers. Bravo!
